Relationship Between Psychological Factors And Acute Strength Task Performance, Michael H. Haischer Jan 2017

Relationship Between Psychological Factors And Acute Strength Task Performance, Michael H. Haischer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this research was to investigate if various psychological wellbeing assessments can predict maximal strength performance and self-scored rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in the back squat. Fifty-eight resistance-trained males and females were recruited, and reported to the laboratory on one day. Subjects completed eight different scales and questionnaires before completing one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing of the squat, followed by two single-repetition sets at 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of 1RM, and a set to volitional fatigue at 70% of 1RM. Cognitive anxiety and hypersomnia were found to be positive and negative predictors (p<0.05), respectively, of 1RM performance. Further, self-confidence, grit, and perceived recovery status were significant negative predictors of RPE (p<0.05). Finally, PRS was discovered to be a positive predictor of subject-reported 1RM self-efficacy (b=0.39, t=3.14, p<0.01, R2=0.15).

Resistance Is Never Futile: Un-Sporting Surfing As Radical Female Behavior, Katherine E. Schipper Jan 2017

Resistance Is Never Futile: Un-Sporting Surfing As Radical Female Behavior, Katherine E. Schipper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Using the narrative imagery of Instagram and the cultural narrative of the Olympics, I explore the role of agency and autonomy in modern sport with a focus on the commercial and institutional arms of surfing. This project is an attempt to evaluate visual and cultural narrative from the perspective of a literary scholar and to root theory and philosophy in issues that go beyond scholarship and academics. In chapter one, I use sports sociologists Jennifer Hargreaves and Krista Comer as well as Jean Kilbourne and Rosalind Gill to illuminate and explore two surf-centric Instagram accounts, both of which imagine a …

Secure Communication By Coherence Modulation At The Photon Counting Level, Abdellatif Boughanmi Jan 2017

Secure Communication By Coherence Modulation At The Photon Counting Level, Abdellatif Boughanmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Secure communication is a topic of great importance. The goal of our research reported here is to develop a scheme of secure communication system using coherence modulation at the photon counting level. When operated at the photon counting level, coherence modulation can provide quantifiably secure binary transmission between two entities, security being based on the nonclonability of photons. The objectives of the research are as follows: Show that interferometer-based coherence modulation can provide physics guaranteed secure binary transmission where each bit is associated with a countable number of photons. Review the operation of conventional high-light-level coherence modulation communication and then …

Self-Organization Of Object-Level Visual Representations Via Enforcement Of Structured Sparsity In Deep Neural Networks, Daniel C Jr Lacombe Jan 2017

Self-Organization Of Object-Level Visual Representations Via Enforcement Of Structured Sparsity In Deep Neural Networks, Daniel C Jr Lacombe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A hypothesis for the self-organization of receptive fields throughout the hierarchy of biological vision is empirically tested using simulations of deep artificial neural networks. Results from many fields for topographic organization of receptive fields throughout the visual hierarchy remain disconnected. Although extensive simulation research has been done to model topographic organization in early visual areas, little to no research has investigated such organization in higher visual areas. We propose that parsimonious structured sparsity principles, that permit the learning of topographic receptive fields in simulated visual areas, are sufficient for the emergence of a semantic topology in object-level representations of a …

Site Fidelity Assessment Of Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) Following Large-Scale Emigration Of Sympatric Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis) In The Bahamas, Sommer L. Kuhn Jan 2017

Site Fidelity Assessment Of Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) Following Large-Scale Emigration Of Sympatric Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis) In The Bahamas, Sommer L. Kuhn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Two sympatric species of dolphins (Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus) have been long-term residents to Little Bahama Bank. This study assessed whether there was a change in residence patterns or diurnal foraging depths of bottlenose dolphins following a large emigration event in the resident spotted dolphin community on this sandbank. Photo-identification was used to identify individual bottlenose dolphins and compare pooled years before (2010-2012) and after (2013-2015) the spotted dolphin emigration. The identified community size and overall residency of the bottlenose dolphins remained similar, although two bottlenose dolphins emigrated over deep water to the …

Sedentism, Agriculture, And The Neolithic Demographic Transition: Insights From Jōmon Paleodemography, Corey Noxon Jan 2017

Sedentism, Agriculture, And The Neolithic Demographic Transition: Insights From Jōmon Paleodemography, Corey Noxon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A paleodemographic analysis was conducted using skeletal data from Jōmon period sites in Japan. 15P5 ratios were produced as proxy birth rate values for sites throughout the Jōmon period. Previous studies based on numbers of residential sites indicated a substantial population increase in the Kantō and Chūbu regions in central Japan, climaxing during the Middle Jōmon period, followed by an equally dramatic population decrease, somewhat resembling changes that occurred during a Neolithic Demographic Transition (NDT). The Jōmon are viewed as a relatively sedentary, non-agricultural group, and provided an opportunity to attempt to separate the factors of sedentism and agriculture as …

Smart Broadcast Protocol Design For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Elnaz Limouchi Jan 2017

Smart Broadcast Protocol Design For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Elnaz Limouchi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Multi-hop broadcast is one of the main approaches to disseminate data in VANET. Therefore, it is important to design a reliable multi-hop broadcast protocol, which satis es both reachability and bandwidth consumption requirements. In a dense network, where vehicles are very close to each other, the number of vehicles needed to rebroadcast the message should be small enough to avoid a broad- cast storm, but large enough to meet the reachability requirement. If the network is sparse, a higher number of vehicles is needed to retransmit to provide a higher reachability level. So, it is obvious that there is a …

Surrealism 2.0/Contemporary Games Analyzing Contemporary Games As A Re-Emergence Of Surrealism, Demetrius Dukes Jan 2017

Surrealism 2.0/Contemporary Games Analyzing Contemporary Games As A Re-Emergence Of Surrealism, Demetrius Dukes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Historically, Surrealism is defined as a literary and artistic movement which developed from Dadaism in the early twentieth century. Many artistic and literary historians assess that the lifespan of Surrealism did not persist beyond the 1960’s – that in fact, after notable surrealist such as René Magritte, Man Ray, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali challenged the limited cultural assumption of rationalism, the pursuit to explore and visualize the subconscious faded from artistic ambition. However, the purpose of this paper is to propose an alternative notion that suggests that digital interactive mediums – such as contemporary games and virtual technologies – …

Statistical And Entropy Considerations For Ultrasound Tissue Characterization, Khrystsina Navumenka Jan 2017

Statistical And Entropy Considerations For Ultrasound Tissue Characterization, Khrystsina Navumenka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Modern cancerous tumor diagnostics is nearly impossible without invasive methods, such as biopsy, that may require involved surgical procedures. In recent years some work has been done to develop alternative non-invasive methods of medical diagnostics. For this purpose, the data obtained from an ultrasound image of the body crosssection, has been analyzed using statistical models, including Rayleigh, Rice, Nakagami, and K statistical distributions. The homodyned-K (H-K) distribution has been found to be a good statistical tool to analyze the envelope and/or the intensity of backscattered signal in ultrasound tissue characterization. However, its use has usually been limited due to the …

Stress Reactivity In Children Following An Academic Stressor: Associations And Interactions With Intrapersonal Characteristics, Maria L. Corbett Jan 2017

Stress Reactivity In Children Following An Academic Stressor: Associations And Interactions With Intrapersonal Characteristics, Maria L. Corbett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Previous research has shown that the intrapersonal characteristics (e.g., temperament) of children are associated closely with alterations in the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary–adrenal (HPA) stress axis. However, consistently capturing direct associations between these characteristics and stress reactivity of the HPA axis has, at times, yielded disparate findings. Thus, using the Rothbart model of temperament (Rothbart & Derryberry, 1981) as a guide, the main goal of this project was to investigate and identify intrapersonal characteristics that moderate associations between other intrapersonal characteristics of the child and stress reactivity during development (e.g., trait by trait interactions). Additionally, study variables were assessed for …

Survival By Any Means: Race And Gender, Passing And Performance In Octavia Butler’S Parable Of The Sower And Parable Of The Talents, Micah R. Moreno Jan 2017

Survival By Any Means: Race And Gender, Passing And Performance In Octavia Butler’S Parable Of The Sower And Parable Of The Talents, Micah R. Moreno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project focuses on race and gender in the works of author Octavia Butler. The primary texts analyzed are Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. In these novels, Butler alludes to slavery in antebellum America by drawing strong parallels between the roles race and gender played in the survival of the escaped slaves of America’s past and the role they play in the survival of the main character of Butler’s apocalyptic future. The themes of race and gender frequently intersect and maintain an important role throughout the novels. I argue that, by reading Butler’s novels within this …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) vs. continuous moderate-intensity exercise (CME) on serum CTRP9 and brachial FMD responses in obese and normal-weight subjects. Sixteen participants (9 obese and 7 normal-weight) completed HIIE and CME in a randomized fashion. Our results showed a significant time effect for CTRP9 immediately following acute HIIE and CME in both groups. Furthermore, both significant treatment by time and group by time interactions for FMD were observed following both exercise protocols, with greater CME-induced FMD response in obese subjects than normal-weight subjects. Additionally, a positive …

The Circular Restricted Four Body Problem Is Non-Integrable: A Computer Assisted Proof, Shane Kepley Jan 2017

The Circular Restricted Four Body Problem Is Non-Integrable: A Computer Assisted Proof, Shane Kepley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Gravitational N-body problems are central in classical mathematical physics. Studying their long time behavior raises subtle questions about the interplay between regular and irregular motions and the boundary between integrable and chaotic dynamics. Over the last hundred years, concepts from the qualitative theory of dynamical systems such as stable/unstable manifolds, homoclinic and heteroclinic tangles, KAM theory, and whiskered invariant tori, have come to play an increasingly important role in the discussion. In the last fty years the study of numerical methods for computing invariant objects has matured into a thriving sub-discipline. This growth is driven at least in part by …

Across the US, 22% of Medicare patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of heart failure (HF) will be readmitted within 30-days of discharge. There is no one costeffective process identified to help patients transition home and maintain their own selfcare. The aim of this study is to compare readmission rates, HF knowledge, self-care, and quality of life for patients who transition home from the hospital under the care of a Heart Failure Nurse Navigator (HFNN) with patients who receive usual care. The HFNN is a home health RN with specialized training in HF care. The HFNN visited intervention group (IG) participants …

The Effect Of Fluid Flow On Human Sperm Fertility, Kari Rappa Jan 2017

The Effect Of Fluid Flow On Human Sperm Fertility, Kari Rappa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Current sperm processing methods used in assisted reproductive technologies can cause damage to the sperm cell. New ways that mimic the natural guidance mechanisms present in the female genital tract may offer ways to sort sperm with better fertility parameters. Sperm that respond to these cues may have better over sperm health. Human sperm exhibit positive rheotaxis by orienting and swimming against the fluid released by the female genital tract. At certain flow rates sperm can actively orient and swim against the flow. Sperm retrieved that exhibit positive rheotaxis have higher motility and better morphology than the original semen sample.

The Effect Of Alliance Portfolio Size On Firm Performance Revisited: The Role Of Firm- And Portfolio-Level Contingencies, Barreto Tais Siqueira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Alliance portfolios, or a firm collection of simultaneous alliances, have become common phenomena particularly in technology industries. These portfolios have been found to have a significant impact on firms’ financial performance. At the same time, there is little consensus regarding the direction of this effect. Findings have shown positive, negative, curvilinear, and non-significant relationships. In this dissertation, I employed an organizational learning perspective to investigate the effect of alliance portfolio size on firm financial performance. Using a sample of 343 firm-year observations in the U.S. software industry, I explored portfolio- and firm-level characteristics as moderators of this relationship. Findings provide …

The Diamonds At Work: Applying The Diamonds Dimensions To Occupations, Steven Bell Jan 2017

The Diamonds At Work: Applying The Diamonds Dimensions To Occupations, Steven Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Just as people can be described by traits, situations can be described by the “Situational Eight” DIAMONDS (Duty, Intellect, Adversity, Mating, pOsitivity, Negativity, Deception, Sociality) (Rauthmann et al., 2014). Based upon the common occurrence of situations in combinations unique to different occupations the current study sets out to (1) map the DIAMONDS dimensions into the workplace and (2) examine the relationships between the DIAMONDS dimensions and other measures of work contexts (Skill, Abilities, Knowledge, etc.). Through the use of a modified version of the S8* (Rauthmann & Sherman, 2014), the DIAMONDS dimensions were correlated with scored responses of either individuals …

The Effect Of Stereoscopic Cues On Multiple Object Tracking In A 3d Virtual Environment, Steven Milanez Oliveira Jan 2017

The Effect Of Stereoscopic Cues On Multiple Object Tracking In A 3d Virtual Environment, Steven Milanez Oliveira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Research on Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) has typically involved 2D displays where stimuli move in a single depth plane. However, under natural conditions, objects move in 3D which adds complexity to tracking. According to the spatial interference model, tracked objects have an inhibitory surround that when crossed causes tracking errors. How do these inhibitory fields translate to 3D space? Does multiple object tracking operate on a 2D planar projection, or is it in fact 3D? To investigate this, we used a fully immersive virtual-reality environment where participants were required to track 1 to 4 moving objects. We compared performance to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis provides a comprehensive review of the evolution of Robert Agnew’s General Strain Theory of Delinquency, and tests his 2002 extension using two subsamples from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Juveniles between 12 and 17, and “emerging” adults that are 18 years old. Including an “emerging” adult subsample makes this analysis one of the first full tests of adults. Additionally, this analysis is the first partial test of Agnew’s 2013 extension of General Strain Theory. Overall, the results of the analysis lend support to Agnew’s 2002 extension. Measures of strain are revealed to significantly effect …

The Estimation Of Ancestry And Sex In Unknown Individuals Through A Comparison Of Methods, Alexandra N. Thomas Jan 2017

The Estimation Of Ancestry And Sex In Unknown Individuals Through A Comparison Of Methods, Alexandra N. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

When unidentified skeletal remains are found, researchers utilize a number of methods to apportion details for a biological profile. While these practices are used and professed through generations of students, they also require a reevaluation of the methods. This project estimates the ancestry and sex of nine unknown skeletal individuals through two different mechanisms. Modified biological profiles were completed through two different methodologies: anthroscopic traits (Buikstra and Ubelaker 1994; White et al. 2012) and geometric morphometrics using 3D-ID (Slice and Ross 2009). The results serve two purposes: (1) to provide ancestry and sex (2) to compare two methodologies through outcomes …

The Impact Of Icoaching On Teacher-Delivered Opportunities To Respond, Kathleen M. Randolph Jan 2017

The Impact Of Icoaching On Teacher-Delivered Opportunities To Respond, Kathleen M. Randolph

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Employment coaching is essential for performing job duties and for developing and enhancing skills. Coaching in the school setting typically follows the traditional format of pre-conference, observe, and post-conference, where feedback on teaching performance is shared but often delayed. Professional development provides teachers with skills to enhance their teaching practice with little to no follow-up or support. The most effective way to produce change in the school setting is to show the connection between professional development and student performance, and iCoaching can help to bridge the gap. Research shows that effective feedback is immediate, systematic, positive, constructive, and detailed (Scheeler …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Games, movies, television, and interactive media make use of World-Building. World-Building essentially creates an elaborate invented universe in order to give a story context. In other words it generates a back-story designed to enhance the cathartic experience and promote engagement by the reader, viewer or participant. Some examples of World-Building include Halo, World of WarCraft and Game of Thrones. Stories need context to be fully understood and experienced. One describes a situation, the environment, sensations, smells, sounds and sensory perception to give the audience a fuller, richer experience. World-Building provides context through history, textures, laws, physics and motivations. The written …
