Using Insider Action Research In The Study Of Digital Entrepreneurial Processes: A Pragmatic Design Choice?, Kisito Futonge
Using Insider Action Research In The Study Of Digital Entrepreneurial Processes: A Pragmatic Design Choice?, Kisito Futonge
Conference papers
This paper proposes that insider action research (IAR), with its iterative and emergent form of inquiry, presents a pragmatic design choice for understanding the nature of uncertainty surrounding the digital entrepreneurial process. Since entrepreneurship in the digital context is a highly dynamic and fluid process, IAR appears well-suited for use in researching it. Yet, the paucity of application in entrepreneurship research in general, and less so in the emerging digital space, is rather puzzling. Thus, using a ‘live’ case study in the e-learning domain, this paper contributes by shining light on how this design choice might be set up and …

Using The Anti-Racism Digital Library And Thesaurus To Understand Information Access, Authority, Value And Privilege, Anita Coleman
Faculty Publications
The new ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, specifically the six threshold concepts about information mirror the experiences of the author as a researcher studying the representation of anti-racism in bibliographic information systems. Anti-racism, in general, is a great concept to use when teaching information literacy and the paper discusses how antiracism information literacy can be taught and learned as part of theological and religious studies education. Since the conference is in Atlanta, the article begins with two stories about the scholar Dubois who lived there and that illustrate some of the IL concepts discussed.
Democratic Implementation Of Anywhere, Anytime, Anyway Learning Through Blended Synchronous Delivery In A Postsecondary Institution In Canada, Donald Moen
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
This organizational improvement plan considers the implementation of anywhere, anytime, anyway learning in the context of competing stakeholder values in a postsecondary institution in Canada. Quinn’s (1983) competing values framework is used to juxtapose the values of students, faculty members, innovators and administrators in the context of educational technology implementation (Yang & Melitski, 2007). A case for anywhere, anytime, anyway learning through web-conferencing in a blended online format is made to each group in the context of that group’s value system. Bourdieu’s (1984) forms of capital are used: administrators valuing economic capital, faculty members valuing cultural capital, and students valuing …
Narrowing The Dissemination Gap: Genres For Practitioner Scholarship, Adrian Wolfberg, Kalle Lyytinen
Narrowing The Dissemination Gap: Genres For Practitioner Scholarship, Adrian Wolfberg, Kalle Lyytinen
Engaged Management ReView
Practitioners with a minimum of ten years of management experience increasingly enroll in doctoral-level management education programs. When entering these programs, their view of the world shifts as they augment practitioner perspectives with scholarly perspectives. They acquire distinct competencies in framing, inquiring, and addressing managerial problems as practitioner-scholars who act as boundary spanners between academia and management practice. Unfortunately, current management outlets for knowledge dissemination do not explicitly support boundary-spanning strategies and writing genres. At one end of the spectrum are academically focused journals, where concerns of theory and method dominate. The target audience of these outlets is academic scholars—the …

Explicating Stakeholder Criteria: Opening Up The Power Field Through Design Games, Sune Gudiksen, Kirstine Christensen, Joakim Glerup Aalborg, Klaus Greve
Nordes Conference Series
Participatory design games involve both users and, later, stakeholders in the development process. Research has shown that such games have documented benefits, such as mutual learning, shared communication and joint propositions for sets of alternative scenarios and future practices. However, as the complexity of participatory design projects increases (e.g. due to a widening circle of include stakeholders), it becomes harder to keep track of the various stakeholders’ diverse criteria. Recent design research has shown that criteria of importance to stakeholders—and, subsequently, their ownership—is a first step towards infrastructuring as a key factor in bringing about organizational change. For this reason, …
Exploring Power With Object Theatre, Merja Ryöppy, Eva Knutz, Salu Ylirisku
Exploring Power With Object Theatre, Merja Ryöppy, Eva Knutz, Salu Ylirisku
Nordes Conference Series
This paper explores Object Theatre as an approach to address power in design. We understand power as a relational activity that emerges and is upheld through particular ways of relating (Elias 1991; Stacey 2007). The spontaneity in participant actions through Object Theatre exercises renders processes of relating tangible and negotiable. In this study Object Theatre was applied in exploration of a new walking aid for elderly people. We argue that the shift in perspective that Object Theatre allows designers to achieve can be effectively harnessed to explore issues arising from power relating amongst people – and between people and objects.
Whole In One: Designing For Empathy In Complex Systems, Helena Sustar, Tuuli Mattelmäki
Whole In One: Designing For Empathy In Complex Systems, Helena Sustar, Tuuli Mattelmäki
Nordes Conference Series
This paper investigates the role of empathy and the use of service design tools in the context of (governmental) systems and organisational services. The discourse focuses on three areas: intercultural empathy, the empathising process and empathic design tools. The paper first reviews what empathy is and how it has been discussed in design. Secondly, a practical example of a complex design context is presented, an interactive platform for governmental immigration services. To best acknowledge the perspective of one, i.e. an individual in the whole, this example proposes that a combination of different design tools can systematically be applied, to foster …

Navigating The Changing Landscape Of Early Education Within A Preschool Setting, Heather L. Beaudin
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
Abstract
Currently, early education in Ontario is rapidly transforming to meet the diverse needs and demands of children, educators and families. With each change that the sector experiences leaders in early childhood education are called to guide their team through the change process. One recent change that leaders have been faced with is the implementation of Full-Day Kindergarten across the province and its impact on child care programs. Considering the wide range of child care programs that have been affected by Full-Day Kindergarten, this Organizational Improvement Plan explores a significant problem of practice: how can key stakeholders within a child …
The Influence Of Lifestyle Medicine On Nurses' Belief Of Evidence Based Practice, Demecia Wade-Murdock
The Influence Of Lifestyle Medicine On Nurses' Belief Of Evidence Based Practice, Demecia Wade-Murdock
DNP and Student Works
Adult onset type 2 diabetes can be improved with lifestyle medicine, which is a prescriptive and patient-centered evidence-based practice model. It affords consistent patient monitoring and provides nurses with the education to support and assist individuals in improving their health. In this intervention, education and resources were given to improve nurses' knowledge of lifestyle medicine and evidence based practice. Public Health Nurses can help patients prevent or mitigate against diabetes related complications by utilizing lifestyle medicine. While lifestyle medicine programs vary, they all assist patients in adopting behaviors (e.g., diet, exercise) that will improve their health and quality of life.

An Analysis Of Oregon Youth Authority Populations: Who Receives Treatment And What Factors Influence Allocation Of Treatment Resources?, Rebecca Arredondo Yazzie
Dissertations and Theses
Service provision in both adult and juvenile correctional settings is an understudied phenomenon. Research has evaluated the use of evidence-based practices (EBP) in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse among adults and juveniles. Young, Farrell, Henderson and Taxman (2009) highlight the role of organizational factors including climate and culture, opportunities for staff training, resources, administrator attitudes and interagency collaboration in the application of EBP in correctional settings. The Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) aims to provide services to youth under the guise of EBP. Literature in the field of juvenile justice is limited in scope in areas of organizational …

Trust Formation When Youth And Adults Partner To Lead School Reform: A Case Study Of Supportive Structures And Challenges, Catharine Biddle
Trust Formation When Youth And Adults Partner To Lead School Reform: A Case Study Of Supportive Structures And Challenges, Catharine Biddle
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
This study examines the beliefs and practices that support and undermine trust formation in school leadership efforts that invite students into discussions of continuous improvement. Through a case study of a youth-adult partnership initiative, the study finds that trust between youth and adults was supported by having a shared, accessible language for discussing teaching and learning, opportunities for strengths-based dialogue around school practices, and regular opportunities to meet. However, there was also a perception gap between youth and adults around how well group members fulfilled their roles in the actual data collection process, causing conflict and undermining the long-term stability …
Discrimination And Health: Sleep And Racism-Related Vigilance In Wave 5 Of Americans' Changing Lives Study, Jennifer Werekeitzen
Discrimination And Health: Sleep And Racism-Related Vigilance In Wave 5 Of Americans' Changing Lives Study, Jennifer Werekeitzen
University Honors Theses
The present study focuses on racial discrimination, sleep, and vigilance from Wave 5 of the Americans' Changing Lives study. From previous literature we know that stress and sleep are related; the more stress present, the more sleeping problems. It follows then that if anticipation of discrimination (vigilance) is the manifestation of stress related to racism, then vigilant individuals will have a harder time sleeping. Our hypothesis is that Black Americans’ vigilance levels will be negatively correlated with their sleep quality such that lower vigilance levels will indicate higher sleep quality. The results supported our hypothesis suggesting that Black Americans who …

The Information Regulation Of Business Actors, Kishanthi Parella
The Information Regulation Of Business Actors, Kishanthi Parella
Scholarly Articles
A transnational legal order (TLO) is emerging regarding the role of businesses in respecting human rights. This legal order includes multistakeholder initiatives, international organization recommendations and guidelines, NGO certifications, and other voluntary instruments. Many of the norms within this TLO are nonbinding and therefore lack mandatory compliance; what they may possess is persuasive power, particularly when the norms are developed, endorsed, and managed by reputable organizations. It is that reputational, or legitimacy, advantage that matters for encouraging industry associations to comply with the nonbinding norms associated with these organizations. Industry associations and other business actors will gravitate more towards legitimacy …

The Minimized Face Of Internal Communication: An Exploration Of How Public Relations Agency Websites Frame Internal Communication And Its Connection To Social Media, Abbey Levenshus, Laura Lemon
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Internal communication is increasingly vital to organizational success due to the influence of social media, yet it remains understudied within public relations research. Using a qualitative content analysis of 181 websites, this study examines how leading public relations agency websites frame the value of internal communication and its connection to social media. Findings reveal internal communication is largely missing from the frame. When explicitly referenced, it is mostly framed as synonymous with employee communication as a means for management to communicate to employees, though some portrayals are more robust. Websites frame internal communication’s value as enhancing financial outcomes by improving …

Teacher Job Satisfaction As Related To Student Performance On State-Mandated Testing, James Douglas Crawford
Dissertations
The growing demand placed upon educators has taken a toll on the profession (Walker, 2014). Teacher burnout, stress, and unhappiness may be predestined unless administrators recognize how to prevent these from happening (Elias, 2012). The intent of this quantitative study was to survey teachers in southwest Missouri to determine their level of job satisfaction as it relates to student performance on state-mandated assessments. The survey included items designed to collect data on overall level of teacher job satisfaction in relation to demographic areas of age range, gender, level of education, years of teaching experience, subject areas taught, and salary range. …

Exploring Teacher’S Attitudes And Behaviors In Implementing Instructional Technology Into Curriculum, Letitia Walters
Exploring Teacher’S Attitudes And Behaviors In Implementing Instructional Technology Into Curriculum, Letitia Walters
Dissertations
This program evaluation explored how effective integration of technology resources and systems with teacher training and curriculum development can occur despite teachers limited technology competencies. Theses competencies increase when teachers have desire and opportunities to become better acquainted with utilizing digital tools. Perceived technology integration skills of teachers solely, cannot predict the effective integration of technology in student products to address new learning (Ertmer, 2005). Technology integrated lesson plans, the relationship between teachers' beliefs and their use of various strategies to integrate technology and a model that teachers can use to guide them through the necessary changes they will need …

Understanding The Public Education Gender Gap Amid Secondary And Central Office Administrators, Danielle L. Taylor
Understanding The Public Education Gender Gap Amid Secondary And Central Office Administrators, Danielle L. Taylor
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Despite advances in political movements and societal awareness, there is still an obvious gender discrepancy among U.S. public education secondary school and superintendent positions plaguing our nation. Data indicates that most middle and high school classroom teaching positions are filled by women and yet more campuses and districts are led by men. The literature review uncovered two main categories that lead to this gap: external and internal factors. Societal bias, stereotypes, and hiring practices are among the external causations of this margin. Likewise, work life balance and self-desire to combat old organizational structure impact women internally from assuming advanced leadership …
