Change In Nutritional Quality Of Detached Aspen And Willow Foliage Used As Insect Food In The Laboratory, William E. Miller
Change In Nutritional Quality Of Detached Aspen And Willow Foliage Used As Insect Food In The Laboratory, William E. Miller
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Leaves of Populus tremuloides and Salix babylonica held in the laboratory as for feeding insects were analyzed for total nitrogen, total phenolics, and total sugars at 0, 3, and 6 days. More often than not, the three components varied due to leaf age, time since excision, or temperature. Temporal changes altered nutritional balance and probable impact on insect performance, Results suggest that other woody plant species would not remain nutritionally stable for long in the laboratory,

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that reducing systolic blood pressure (BP) tooutcomes; however, an optimal level has not yet been determined. Many population studies or post hoc analyses suggest a target systolic BP between 120 and 140 mm Hg with increased risk above and below that range. We tested the hypothesis that consistent control of systolic BP between 120 and 140 mm Hg-time in therapeutic range-is a strong determinant of all-cause mortality among US veterans.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 689 051 individuals from 15 Veterans Administration Medical Centers were followed over a 10-year period. Participants were classified as hypertensive, …
Microbial And Genomic Analysis Of Environmental Samples In Search Of Pathogenic Salmonella, Jorie L. Skutas
Microbial And Genomic Analysis Of Environmental Samples In Search Of Pathogenic Salmonella, Jorie L. Skutas
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Salmonellosis or “food poisoning” is a foodborne infection brought on by the pathogen Salmonella from the ingestion of the bacterium on contaminated foods such as vegetables. Infection from Salmonella leads to the highest incidence of hospitalizations and deaths each year, compared to any other bacterial foodborne illness. South Florida is the second largest agricultural winter vegetable producer in the United States, and contamination of vegetables is often observed in preharvest practices. A hardy bacterium, Salmonella, has been shown to live up to 6 weeks in soil and water up to 42°C without a host.
The Florida Everglades is a tropical …

How Did I Get Here? Testing The Translation Of The Morris Water Maze And The Influence Of Hemoglobin A1c On Spatial Navigation Performance, Colleen Pappas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Changes in cognitive status occur with aging and significant attention has been placed on developing interventions to possibly delay cognitive decline and identifying risk factors that exacerbate cognitive deficits. One issue that arises when studying interventions is that they do not always effectively translate from animal models to human subjects. When testing potentially modifiable risk factors related to cognitive impairment, more sensitive metrics could help in identifying targets for intervention at earlier time-points. Therefore, the aims of the current dissertation were twofold. The first study examined the ability to translate between species using a common behavioral paradigm, the Morris water …
Effect Of Exergaming On Physical Activity Of Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Jennifer Dawn Vergara
Effect Of Exergaming On Physical Activity Of Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Jennifer Dawn Vergara
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor related to death (World Health Organization, 2016a). Thus, the World Health Organization (2016a) suggests engaging in at least 150 min of physical activity (PA) throughout the week. Many individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) engage in sedentary lifestyles that raise concern about their long-term health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of exergaming on PA and intensity when implemented with adults with ID. Four adult males diagnosed with ID were recruited. During the scheduled phase, percent occurrence of PA was variable across both conditions for each participant. During the …

Evaluation Of Winter Management Methods To Enhance Survival Of The Giant Salvinia Weevil, Cyrtobagous Salviniae, Lori Robyn Moshman
Evaluation Of Winter Management Methods To Enhance Survival Of The Giant Salvinia Weevil, Cyrtobagous Salviniae, Lori Robyn Moshman
LSU Master's Theses
Giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta Mitchell) is a noxious aquatic weed in the southeastern United States. Dense plant mats create ecological and economic consequences by displacing native species and impacting freshwater industries. Biological control programs using the salvinia weevil (Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands, Coleoptera: Curculionidae) have limited efficacy in giant salvinia’s northernmost range due to the weevil’s low cold tolerance and long-term establishment rates. Spunbonded polypropylene (SBP) fabrics and manipulation of plant density were evaluated as two strategies for managing giant salvinia mats during winter. Greenhouse, laboratory, and field experiments were conducted to determine the suitability of these …

Investigation Of Moringa Oleifera Leaf Extract And Its Cancer-Selective Antiproliferative Properties, Reagen H. Welch, Ashlee H. Tietje
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Moringa oleifera is a tree native to a number of Asian, African, and Central American countries and has been used in traditional medicine for an assortment of medicinal uses for centuries. Due to bioactive compounds within Moringa leaves, it is believed that Moringa leaf extract may possess cancer-selective antiproliferative properties. Previous research has been conducted in regards to this topic, but poor experimental design due to lack of necessary controls limits the legitimacy of anticancer claims. While previous research has shown that Moringa leaf extract has the potential to kill cancer cells, the research fails to demonstrate the effects of …

Background
Physical inactivity is a leading preventable cause of chronic disease and premature death globally, yet over half of the adult Australian population is inactive. To address this, web-based physical activity interventions, which have the potential to reach large numbers of users at low costs, have received considerable attention. To fully realise the potential of such interventions, there is a need to further increase their appeal to boost engagement and retention, and sustain intervention effects over longer periods of time. This randomised controlled trial aims to evaluate the efficacy of a gamified physical activity intervention that connects users to each …

Diagnostic Divisions Of Eating Disorders: A Critical Analysis, Channah A. Leff
Diagnostic Divisions Of Eating Disorders: A Critical Analysis, Channah A. Leff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to critically examine the diagnostic divisions of eating disorders as proposed within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). I focus on Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED), although there were several new categories issued in 2013. Using person-centered ethnographic interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and autoethnography, I collected qualitative data to highlight how disordered eaters perceive themselves and their behaviors in relation to their diagnoses. I recruited participants in Boston, MA from Eating Disorders Anonymous (EDA), a decentralized network of support groups …
Validation Of The Electronic Kids Dietary Index (E-Kindex) Screening Tool For Early Identification Of Risk For Overweight/Obesity (Ow/Ob) In A Pediatric Population: Associations With Quality Of Life Perceptions, Patricia A. Hall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite a worsening obesity epidemic and despite the American Medical Association (AMA) declaring Obesity a disease (2013), few assessment tools exist that assist practitioners who are charged with identifying risk for development of OW/OB in children. The Center for Health Statistics (2017) reported a 40% rate in obesity in the adult population and 18.5% in children in the U.S. Successful weight loss maintenance after 1 to 2 years of non-invasive treatment is less than 1%, indicating obesity is nearly incurable, making prevention imperative. Assessing risk for OW/OB in children has proven difficult given the lack of validated tools. The purposes …

Impacts Of Hunting And Life-History Stage On The Stress Physiology And Body Condition Of Fall And Wintering Mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos), Jerad Richard Henson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Waterfowl face a multitude of stressors across the fall and winter. These stressors include energetic demands associated with annual cycle stage, weather, habitat availability, and waterfowl hunting seasons. Stressful stimuli elicit a physiologic stress response culminating with the release of corticosterone (CORT). CORT aids in survival and recovery over the short-term, but if elevated over a long period it can lead to decrements in health. To avoid the potential harmful effects of prolonged elevations in CORT, some birds seasonally dampen their response to a predictable stressor. The aim of this study was to examine the changes in stress physiology and …

Electron bifurcation is the coupling of exergonic and endergonic redox reactions to simultaneously generate (or utilize) low- and high-potential electrons. It is the third recognized form of energy conservation in biology and was recently described for select electron-transferring flavoproteins (Etfs). Etfs are flavin-containing heterodimers best known for donating electrons derived from fatty acid and amino acid oxidation to an electron transfer respiratory chain via Etf-quinone oxidoreductase. Canonical examples contain a flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) that is involved in electron transfer, as well as a non-redox-active AMP. However, Etfs demonstrated to bifurcate electrons contain a second FAD in place of the …
