Sweetpotato Virus C And Its Contribution To The Potyvirus Complex In Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas), Favio E. Herrera Eguez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In Louisiana, sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) is infected in Louisiana by the four ubiquitous potyviruses: Sweetpotato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV), Sweetpotato virus G (SPVG), Sweetpotato virus 2 (SPV2) and the strain of SPFMV previously known as the common strain, recently renamed as Sweetpotato virus C (SPVC). These four viruses belong to the Potyviridae family, with single stranded RNA of ~11kb. In this group of plant viruses, a single polyprotein is coded entirely but later cleaved into ten mature proteins: P1, HC-pro, P3, 6K1, CI, 6K2, NIa-VPg, NIa-Pro Nib and Coat Protein (CP). In sweetpotato potyviruses, two additional open reading …

Halogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) is an invasive species that displaces Gardner's saltbush (Atriplex gardneri) on saline rangelands, whereas, forage kochia (Bassia prostrata) potentially can rehabilitate these ecosystems. Salinity tolerance has been hypothesized as the predominant factor affecting frequency of these species. This study compared relative salinity tolerance of these species, and tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Plants were evaluated in hydroponics, eliminating the confounding effects of drought, for 28 days at 0, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600, and 800 mmol/L NaCl. Survival, growth, and ion accumulation were determined. …

Cadmium Explains, In Part, The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Cigarette Smoking, Eric M. Hecht Nov 2017

Cadmium Explains, In Part, The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Cigarette Smoking, Eric M. Hecht

Open Access Dissertations

Cigarette smoking is a well-known cardiovascular risk factor associated with an estimated 311 premature cardiovascular deaths per 100,000 smokers in the United States each year. The mechanism of arterial damage due to tobacco smoke is not fully elucidated. One plausible theory suggests that toxic exposure to one or more chemical constituents found in tobacco smoke causes persistent inflammatory changes at the level of the endothelial cell, which leads to arterial damage and atherosclerosis. The toxic elements found in tobacco smoke currently thought to be most responsible for cardiovascular toxicity include nicotine, carbon monoxide (CO), oxidant gases, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), …

Alteration Of Gut Microbiota And Other Properties In Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats After Antibiotics, Diet And Donor Transplant, Ryan Page Nov 2017

Alteration Of Gut Microbiota And Other Properties In Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats After Antibiotics, Diet And Donor Transplant, Ryan Page

LSU Master's Theses

The compositions of bacterial communities inhabiting the human gut are associated with regulating energy balance, immune response, and neurological functions. Many of these benefits are attributed to byproducts of bacteria that feed on fermentable fibers. Research has shown that obese or lean host can transfer their phenotype to germ-free recipients, via microbiota transplant, without alteration in recipient diet. However, transfer may be attenuated by established microbial communities in conventionally-raised rodents or other species. A knockdown of recipient communities may be required before a transplant for microbiota of donors to populate gut of recipient. This study examined whether obese Zucker Diabetic …

Total Lipid And Fatty Acid Composition In Male And Female Larvae Of Indian-Meal Moth And Almond Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Bh. Subramanyam, L. K. Cutkomp

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The total body lipid and fatty acid composition of last instar larvae of the Indian-meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, and almond moth, Cadra cautella, reared on a turkey mash diet was determined. Male P. interpunctella larvae contained significantly higher (lA-fold) total body lipid than females, while no differences between the sexes of C. cautella larvae were observed. The relative abundance of the fatty acids palmitate, palmitoleate, stearate, oleate, lineoleate, and linolenate was similar in both sexes of P. interpunctella and C. cautella. The accumulation of individual fatty acids in larvae of both the moth species did not correspond to …

What's It To Me? Self-Interest And Evaluations Of Financial Conflicts Of Interest, Samuel Bruton, Donald Sacco Nov 2017

What's It To Me? Self-Interest And Evaluations Of Financial Conflicts Of Interest, Samuel Bruton, Donald Sacco

Faculty Publications

Disclosure has become the preferred way of addressing the threat to researcher objectivity arising from financial conflicts of interest (FCOIs). This article argues that the effectiveness of disclosure at protecting science from the corrupting effects of FCOIs—particularly the kind of disclosure mandated by US federal granting agencies—is more limited than is generally acknowledged. Current NIH and NSF regulations require disclosed FCOIs to be reviewed, evaluated, and managed by officials at researchers’ home institutions. However, these reviewers are likely to have institutional and personal interests of their own that may undermine the integrity of their evaluations. This paper presents experimental findings …

Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perceptions Of Collaborating With Registered Dietitians In The Pediatric Population, Brenda Louw, Michelle Lee Nov 2017

Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perceptions Of Collaborating With Registered Dietitians In The Pediatric Population, Brenda Louw, Michelle Lee

ETSU Faculty Works

Survey research was conducted to explore Speech-Language Pathologists’ (SLPs) perceptions and experiences collaborating with Registered Dietitians (RDs) in the pediatric population. 107 SLPs in different settingsparticipated. Findings indicate SLPs were not exposed to RDs or the role of nutrition in their didactic and clinical training. Rather this exposure occurred once they were in the field practicing as an SLP. A clear need was identified regarding graduate and continued education on collaboration between SLPs and RDs.

Hidden: A Case Study On Human Trafficking In Costa Rica, Timothy Adam Golob Nov 2017

Hidden: A Case Study On Human Trafficking In Costa Rica, Timothy Adam Golob

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is a case study on human trafficking that was conducted on the small Central American country of Costa Rica via a mixed-methods approach which included document review, surveys, and interviews. It was selected due to Costa Rica’s history of fluctuation between Tier 2 and Tier 2 Watch List status on the Trafficking in Persons Report, issued by the U.S. Department of State, over the last ten years. This ranking average indicates that it is one of the worst performing Central American states in efforts to combat trafficking in persons. This finding breaks with Costa Rica’s traditional placement as one …
