Evaluation Of Services Provided To Pregnant African Refugees By Catholic Social Services Refugee Resettlement Agency In Dayton Ohio, Jessica M. Brown Nov 2017

Evaluation Of Services Provided To Pregnant African Refugees By Catholic Social Services Refugee Resettlement Agency In Dayton Ohio, Jessica M. Brown

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

In 2016 Public Health - Dayton and Montgomery County declared birth outcomes the number one priority in their Community Health Improvement Plan. To improve the infant mortality rate (IMR), racial disparities must be address and considerations should be given to Dayton’s newest and most vulnerable neighbors. Dayton receives between 200 and 250 refugees each year, 70% of whom are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. African refugees have higher infant mortally and poorer birth outcomes than native populations in the U.S. Early and regular prenatal care is protective against infant mortality, and African refugees consistently report delayed and infrequent …

Characterisation Of Cold Plasma Treated Beef And Dairy Lipids Using Spectroscopic And Chromatographic Methods, Chaitanya Sarangapani, David Dorran, Julie Dunne, Patrick J. Cullen, Paula Bourke

Articles

The efficacy of cold plasma for inactivation of food-borne pathogens in foods is established. However, insights on cold plasma-food interactions in terms of quality effects, particularly for oils and fats, are sparse. This study evaluated plasma-induced lipid oxidation of model matrices, namely dairy and meat fats. Product characterisation was performed using FTIR, 1H NMR and chromatographic techniques. The oxidation of lipids by cold plasma followed the Criegee mechanism and typical oxidation products identified included ozonides, aldehydes (hexanal, pentenal, nonanal and nonenal) and carboxylic acids (9-oxononanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid), along with hydroperoxides (9- and 13-hydroperoxy-octadecadienoylglycerol species). However, these …

It Should Not Be Left To Chance: Ensuring A Good Education For All Our Children, Ellen Condliffe Lagemann

Occasional Paper Series

This essay suggests that progressive education is equivalent to good education. Condliffe Lagemann poses the question: What do we need to do to ensure that good education becomes more universally available than it is today? The answer lies in developing a new science of education, one that better integrates research, practice, and policy, and does a better job of educating the public about education.

Isocitrate Dehydrogenase Mutation In Vibrio Anguillarum Results In Virulence Attenuation And Immunoprotection In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Xiangyu Mou, Edward J. Spinard, Shelby L. Hillman, David R. Nelson

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Background

Vibrio anguillarum is an extracellular bacterial pathogen that is a causative agent of vibriosis in finfish and crustaceans with mortality rates ranging from 30% to 100%. Mutations in central metabolism (glycolysis and the TCA cycle) of intracellular pathogens often result in attenuated virulence due to depletion of required metabolic intermediates; however, it was not known whether mutations in central metabolism would affect virulence in an extracellular pathogen such as V. anguillarum.

Results

Seven central metabolism mutants were created and characterized with regard to growth in minimal and complex media, expression of virulence genes, and virulence in juvenile rainbow …

"Not Very Many Options For The People Who Are Working Here" Rural Housing Challenges Through The Lens Of Two New England Communities, Jess Carson, Marybeth Mattingly Nov 2017

"Not Very Many Options For The People Who Are Working Here" Rural Housing Challenges Through The Lens Of Two New England Communities, Jess Carson, Marybeth Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Jessica Carson and Marybeth Mattingly use interview and focus group data to describe some of the ways that restricted rural housing stock affects working families in two rural New England counties, and explore solutions proposed by rural residents and experts to make housing affordable. They report that many rural places are challenged by unaffordable and inadequate housing. In rural communities with scenic amenities, the draw of second-home owners and retirees restricts housing options for local working families. Land use regulations to preserve the scenery in these places limits options for developing affordable housing. The federal safety …

Examining The Relationship Between Registered Nurses’ Turnover And The Benefits Of An Affirming Climate Of Diversity As Mediated By Workplace Outcomes, James Mark Clardy

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The Affordable Care Act has created within health care a growing demand for primary care services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The anticipated growth in need for registered nurses (RN) of 19% by 2020 is compounded by a current estimated national turnover rate greater than 17%. Human Resource Development (HRD) practitioners in health care are challenged to develop and implement interventions that can influence turnover in RNs despite identifying variables that effect turnover. This research explored how RN turnover can be positively affected by a government mandated requirement that health care create a diverse workforce and cultural competency. …

The Use Of Bicycle Workstations To Increase Physical Activity In Secondary Classrooms, Alicia Fedewa, Colleen Cornelius, Soyeon Ahn

Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND

To date, the majority of interventions have implemented classroom-based physical activity (PA) at the elementary level; however, there is both the potential and need to explore student outcomes at high-school level as well, given that very few studies have incorporated classroom-based PA interventions for adolescents. One exception has been the use of bicycle workstations within secondary classrooms. Using bicycle workstations in lieu of traditional chairs in a high school setting shows promise for enhancing adolescents’ physical activity during the school day.

PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE

The present study explored the effects of integrating bicycle workstations into a secondary classroom setting …

Evaluating The Effect Of Chitosan, Water-Soluble Chitosan And Chitosan Application Techniques On The Quality Of Refrigerated Catfish Fillets, Franklin Bonilla Torres Nov 2017

Evaluating The Effect Of Chitosan, Water-Soluble Chitosan And Chitosan Application Techniques On The Quality Of Refrigerated Catfish Fillets, Franklin Bonilla Torres

LSU Master's Theses

Chitosan (CH) is a biopolymer synthetized by deacetylation of chitin, it is found in the exoskeleton of crustaceans, cell wall of fungi, and insects. CH’s water insolubility limited the used of this compound in some food systems. However, enzymatic hydrolysis of CH yields water-soluble chitosan (WSC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chitosan, water-soluble chitosan, and chitosan application techniques on the quality of refrigerated catfish fillets. This research was conducted in two separated studies. In the first study, three solution treatments were prepared: (1) a 1% acetic acid (AA) solution, (2) a 0.5% CH solution …

Movement, Dispersion, And Orientation Of A Population Of The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), In Eggplant, Charles E. Williams

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Short-term dispersal, dispersion, and orientation of a population of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata. were examined in a uniformly spaced planting of eggplant using a mark-recapture technique. Recaptures of marked beetles declined throughout the study, the greatest decline occurring 24 h after release. Dispersal of remaining beetles through the field was gradual; beetle numbers declined with distance from the release point during the first 3 days of the study and increased with distance thereafter. Beetles were highly aggregated for 3-4 days after release but were well dispersed for the remainder of the study. Dispersal of aggregated beetles may …

Observations Of The Gallery Habits Of Trypodendron Retusum (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) Infesting Aspen In Central Michigan, Steven D. Brewer, Robert A. Beck, Richard A. Roeper

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A monogamous pair of adult Trypodendron retusum construct a gallery system consisting of an entrance tunnel and from two to five lateral tunnels into the sapwood of aspen. Inoculation of the mutualistic fungus Ambrosiella ferruginea by the female beetle, was followed by oviposition in shallow egg cradles. Two instars were observed as the larvae enlarged their cradles. The number of cradles per gallery system was correlated to the length of the gallery system. Progeny adults with a sex ratio of approximately 1:1 emerged from late June to early August to overwinter in the litter.

Productive Engagement Early In Life: Civic And Volunteer Service As A Pathway To Development, Benjamin J. Lough, Margaret S. Sherraden, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Michael Sherraden, Suzanne Pritzer Nov 2017

Productive Engagement Early In Life: Civic And Volunteer Service As A Pathway To Development, Benjamin J. Lough, Margaret S. Sherraden, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Michael Sherraden, Suzanne Pritzer

Center for Social Development Research

Globalization and information-age technology have led to declines in labor market opportunity, especially for youth. In this paper, we suggest a robust emphasis on civic and volunteer service as one promising policy response. Service can promote civic engagement, meaningful roles in society, and work experience, while making substantial contributions to social and economic well-being. The classic historical example is the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) created by President Franklin Roosevelt during the Depression of the 1930s. The CCC was enormously productive and enjoyed strong bipartisan political support. In order to re-create this potential, policies for civic and volunteer service should be …

Incorporation Of Biorationals And Trap Crop For Stink Bug Management In Soybeans, Kukuh Hernowo Nov 2017

Incorporation Of Biorationals And Trap Crop For Stink Bug Management In Soybeans, Kukuh Hernowo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Stink bugs are one of the most important seed sucking pests impacting soybean production in Louisiana. Exploration of chemicals that exhibit attraction or repellent activities toward this major pest would be beneficial to develop a push-pull strategy against this pest complex. Spinosad and neem are two commercially available natural insecticides that were claimed to have attractant and repellent activities against stink bugs. To test the potential of these chemicals, a series of experiments was conducted to investigate the olfactory, tactile, feeding, and oviposition preference of stink bugs toward different commercial spinosad products and neem. Additionally, two years of field experiments …

Effects Of Soil Silicon Amendment And Nitrogen Levels On Rice Insect Pest Complex, James Michael P. Villegas Nov 2017

Effects Of Soil Silicon Amendment And Nitrogen Levels On Rice Insect Pest Complex, James Michael P. Villegas

LSU Master's Theses

Rice plants are consistently subjected to various pressures by insect pests throughout the growing season. The main insect pest complex reported in Louisiana are the rice water weevil (major early-season insect pest), fall armyworm (sporadic early-season pest), sugarcane borer and rice stalk borer (long- established but sporadic stem boring pests), Mexican rice borer (an invasive stem-boring pest), and rice stink bug (major late-season pest). Soil silicon amendment has been shown to enhance plant resistance against herbivorous pests. Rice is a typical silicon-accumulating graminaceous crop. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted from 2015 to 2017 to investigate the effects of soil …

Family Income, Cumulative Risk Exposure, And White Matter Structure In Middle Childhood, Alexander J. Dufford, Pilyoung Kim Nov 2017

Family Income, Cumulative Risk Exposure, And White Matter Structure In Middle Childhood, Alexander J. Dufford, Pilyoung Kim

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

Family income is associated with gray matter morphometry in children, but little is known about the relationship between family income and white matter structure. In this paper, using Tract-Based Spatial Statistics, a whole brain, voxel-wise approach, we examined the relationship between family income (assessed by income-to-needs ratio) and white matter organization in middle childhood (N = 27, M = 8.66 years). Results from a non-parametric, voxel-wise, multiple regression (threshold-free cluster enhancement, p < 0.05 FWE corrected) indicated that lower family income was associated with lower white matter organization [assessed by fractional anisotropy (FA)] for several clusters in white matter tracts involved in cognitive and emotional functions including fronto-limbic circuitry (uncinate fasciculus and cingulum bundle), association fibers (inferior longitudinal fasciculus, superior longitudinal fasciculus), and corticospinal tracts. Further, we examined the possibility that cumulative risk (CR) exposure might function as one of the potential pathways by which family income influences neural outcomes. Using multiple regressions, we found lower FA in portions of these tracts, including those found in the left cingulum bundle and left superior longitudinal fasciculus, was significantly related to greater exposure to CR (β = -0.47, p < 0.05 and β = -0.45, p < 0.05).
