The Normative Approach Of The Catholic Tradition In The Ethical And Religious Directives For Resolving Ethical Dilemmas Regarding Medical Technology, David G. Garvis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation engages the Catholic Tradition enunciated in the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services to provide a normative approach for resolving ethical dilemmas regarding pivotal breakthroughs in medical technology.

This normative ethical approach has two components: a normative framework for Catholic health care ethics that adopts practical ethical principles as enunciated in the Ethical and Religious Directives (Chapter 2) and secular decision-making models in organizational and clinical ethics that are consistent with the Catholic Tradition (Chapter 3).

At the end of the theoretical analysis in these chapters, the conclusion to Chapter 3 explains how this normative …

Product Safety Failure And Restoring Reputation Across Markets: Fonterra's Management Of The 2013 Bacterial Contamination Crisis, Augustine Pang Jan 2017

Product Safety Failure And Restoring Reputation Across Markets: Fonterra's Management Of The 2013 Bacterial Contamination Crisis, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Modern distribution systems often stretch beyond national borders such that a highly-visible product failure in a single country may negatively influence the reputation and market share of all identifiable supply chain members-even those that are blameless-in multiple countries, especially when the product is related to food safety. This study considers how Fonterra's response to its 2013 bacterial contamination crisis influenced its own reputation and that of the New Zealand dairy milk industry. It first traces how the crisis started in March 2013 and how it ended in August when investigations showed that the bacteria found did not cause botulism, a …

Fish, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) And Natural Resource Injury, Daniel W. Sparks Jan 2017

Fish, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) And Natural Resource Injury, Daniel W. Sparks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) program is authorized by the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) to pursue compensation for injury to, or destruction and loss of, natural resources. Fish are an important "natural resource" present in almost all aquatic ecosystems. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a hazardous substance and have been shown to cause harm to fish (and fish-eating animals). A series of investigations were conducted to determine if "injury" had occurred to creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and in one study, the fish community that creek chubs were a part of, …

Cesarean Deliveries And Maternal Weight Retention, Kandice A. Kapinos, Olga Yakusheva, Marianne E. Weiss Jan 2017

Cesarean Deliveries And Maternal Weight Retention, Kandice A. Kapinos, Olga Yakusheva, Marianne E. Weiss

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Cesarean delivery accounts for nearly one-third of all births in the U.S. and contributes to an additional $38 billion in healthcare costs each year. Although Cesarean delivery has a long record of improving maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity, increased utilization over time has yielded public health concerns and calls for reductions. Observational evidence suggests Cesarean delivery is associated with increased maternal postpartum weight, which may have significant implications for the obesity epidemic. Previous literature, however, typically does not address selection biases stemming from correlations of pre-pregnancy weight and reproductive health with Cesarean delivery.

Methods

We used fetal malpresentation …

Women In District Assemblies In Ghana: Gender Construction, Resistance And Empowerment, Janet Serwah Boateng Jan 2017

Women In District Assemblies In Ghana: Gender Construction, Resistance And Empowerment, Janet Serwah Boateng

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Calls for more female participation in politics have featured strongly in developed and developing countries since 1975 when the UN made women’s issues a priority. Ghanaian society’s underlying patriarchal structure has made some progress towards gender equity in politics. Whilst there has been a significant improvement in levels of female participation and representation rates, targets have not been reached and the least amount of progress has taken place in local government. The thesis draws upon theories of gender and development (GAD) that emphasises on gender relations in development and proposed the empowerment of women as central to gender equality. Also, …

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter Jan 2017

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractNutritional intake during infancy is a critical aspect of child development and health that is of significant public health concern. Although there is extensive research on breast-feeding and timing of solid food introduction, there is less evidence on types of solid foods fed to infants, specifically commercially prepared infant foods. The consumption of commercially prepared infant foods is very prevalent in many developed countries, exceeding the consumption of homemade foods in some situations. Although these food products may have practical advantages, there are concerns about their nutritional composition, sweet taste, bioavailability of micronutrients, diversity of ingredients and long-term health effects. …

Metagenomic Analysis Of The Complex Microbial Consortium Associated With Cultures Of The Oil‐Rich Alga Botryococcus Braunii, Christine Sambles, Karen Moore, Thomas M. Lux, Katy Jones, George R. Littlejohn, João D. Gouveia, Stephen J. Aves, David J. Studholme, Rob Lee, John Love

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractMicroalgae are widely viewed as a promising and sustainable source of renewable chemicals and biofuels. Botryococcus braunii synthesizes and secretes significant amounts of long‐chain (C30‐C40) hydrocarbons that can be subsequently converted into gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. B. braunii cultures are not axenic and the effects of co‐cultured microorganisms on B. braunii growth and hydrocarbon yield are important, but sometimes contradictory. To understand the composition of the B. braunii microbial consortium, we used high throughput Illumina sequencing of metagenomic DNA to profile the microbiota within a well established, stable B. braunii culture and characterized the demographic changes in the microcosm …

Do Glucocorticoids Predict Fitness? Linking Environmental Conditions, Corticosterone And Reproductive Success In The Blue Tit, Cyanistes Caeruleus, L. J. Henderson, N. P. Evans, B. J. Heidinger, K. A. Herborn, K. E. Arnold Jan 2017

Do Glucocorticoids Predict Fitness? Linking Environmental Conditions, Corticosterone And Reproductive Success In The Blue Tit, Cyanistes Caeruleus, L. J. Henderson, N. P. Evans, B. J. Heidinger, K. A. Herborn, K. E. Arnold

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Glucocorticoids, including corticosterone (CORT), have been suggested to provide a physiological link between ecological conditions and fitness. Specifically, CORT, which is elevated in response to harsh conditions, is predicted to be correlated with reduced fitness. Yet, empirical studies show that CORT can be non-significantly, positively and negatively linked with fitness. Divergent environmental conditions between years or study systems may influence whether CORT is linked to fitness. To test this, we monitored free-living blue tits ( Cyanistes caeruleus ) during breeding over 3 years. We quantified foraging conditions during brood rearing, and examined whether they were correlated with parental baseline CORT …

Low-Fee Private Schools In West Africa: Case Studies From Burkina Faso And Ghana, Corinne Brion Jan 2017

Low-Fee Private Schools In West Africa: Case Studies From Burkina Faso And Ghana, Corinne Brion

Dissertations

Every year billions of dollars are spent on development aid and training around the world. However, only 10% of this training results in the transfer of knowledge, skills, or behaviors learned in the training to the work place. Ideally, learning transfer produces effective and continued application by learners of the knowledge and skills they gained through their learning activities. Some studies suggest that technology usage can serve as an effective post-learning intervention to enhance the transfer of learning.

Currently, there is a limited body of research examining the factors that hinder and promote learning transfer in professional development, particularly the …

Impact Of Incident Cancer On Coronary Artery Disease-Related Concomitant Medication Adherence, Short-Term Health And Economic Outcomes Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries With Coronary Artery Diseas, Ishveen Kaur Chopra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most burdensome chronic conditions in the elderly. The two key goals of long-term management of CAD are (i) to reduce symptoms and ischemia and (ii) prevent myocardial infarction and death, by lowering lipids and blood pressure. Of all the risk reduction strategies, use and adherence to concomitant pharmacotherapy with statins and beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have been shown to be highly effective and has become the cornerstone of CAD management. However, adherence to concomitant pharmacotherapy can be influenced by many factors including the development of …
