Privatizing Laws: Examining The Relationship Between Privatization Elements In State Education Laws And Fourth Grade Academic Performance, Stephanie Romeo
Master's Theses
In the midst of a global context tied to expanding market connections, the United States adopted privatized education reform that has only been increasing over the years. Specific states have adopted privatization in varying degrees and forms, including vouchers, charter schools, public-private partnerships, contracting out services, and virtual education. States have implemented privatization forms for different reasons, such as to improve student achievement, save money, or provide for increased student choice. This research study evaluates the impact of privatization reforms on student achievement by examining the relationship between various privatization elements in state laws and student achievement. To do so, …

Saving The Children Of Shoreditch: Lady Cynthia Colville And Needy Families In East London, C.1900-1960, Kate Bradley
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article approaches the question of the 'child at risk' through the case of an elite individual who became involved in infant welfare and the juvenile courts: Lady Cynthia Colville. Colville entered into voluntary social work as an activity 'appropriate' for a woman of her standing. With her appointment as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary, the already very well-connected Colville had unrivalled access to the Royal Household for promoting the interests of her charities. The case of Colville provides a point of intersection for the historiographies on gender, class, welfare, and crime, and fresh insight into the relationship between 'innovation' …
The Child As Risk: Precocious Girls And Sexual Consent In Late Victorian Britain, Victoria Bates
The Child As Risk: Precocious Girls And Sexual Consent In Late Victorian Britain, Victoria Bates
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
The figure of the precocious girl pervaded Victorian culture, yet is poorly understood. This article focuses on concerns about sexual precocity and their influence on age-of-consent debates in the 1880s. It shows that even this single form of precocity (sexual) took multiple forms and was a malleable concept, often used selectively in parliamentary debates to suit particular agendas. These different uses of precocity did have in common, however, a tendency to be situated against the normal as 'ideal' rather than only statistically 'typical'. As precocity was generally measured against the ideal sexual development and behaviour of respectable North European girls, …
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Ambivalence, And Relationship Outcomes Within Romantic Partnerships, Victoria J. Schriber
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Ambivalence, And Relationship Outcomes Within Romantic Partnerships, Victoria J. Schriber
Senior Independent Study Theses
The current study analyzes self-esteem and the apparent mood of one’s partner as predictors of perceived responsibility, level of felt rejection, and relationship satisfaction in romantic relationships. The study hypothesizes that ambivalence will act as a moderating variable between self-esteem and romantic relationship outcomes. Previous research on the topic suggests that self-esteem is associated with how participants react to their romantic partner when they are in a specific mood. The current study will be one of the first to examine how ambivalence affects self-esteem’s effect on romantic relationships. The results replicate previous research, showing that self-esteem interacts with partner’s mood …

Evidence Of A Perilipin 5 Splice Variant, Brodie Ranzau
Evidence Of A Perilipin 5 Splice Variant, Brodie Ranzau
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Alternative splicing occurs throughout the human genome, leading to multiple proteins from a single gene. The resulting proteins can be nearly identical or vastly different in how they function. Alternative splicing within the perilipin family has been observed in perilipins 1 and 3, giving rise to proteins with varying functions. In the course of our studies on perilipin 5, an immunoblot signal was observed that corresponded to an approximately 35 kDa protein. Western blot analysis of this protein has revealed its expression in C2C12 cultured myoblasts and in heart and liver mouse tissue. Further analysis of perilipin 5 cDNA through …

A free radicals can promote denaturing reactions in many cellular components, which create oxidative stress and it results to damage in body tissue. The free radicals can causing many diseases including heart diseases, Alzheimer, inflammation and cancer. This research aimed to investigate the effect of bioactive peptides derived from Synechococcus sp. cultured for 21 days on antioxidant, anti-inflammation and anticancer activities. The Synechococcus sp. protein hydrolysate was prepared by trypsin digest and purified by ultrafiltration with molecular weight cut off membranes of 10, 5 and 3 kDa. The MW <3 kDa fraction showed the highest NO, ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities with IC50 values of 34.51±9.8 µg protein/mL, IC50 11.54±0.3 µg protein/mL and IC50 13.63±0.15 µg protein/mL, respectively. The F2 fraction from gel filtration chromatography showed the strongest NO and ABTS radical scavenging activities with IC50 values of 7.68±0.64 µg protein/mL and 9.74±0.2 µg protein/mL, respectively. The F2 was purified by RP-HPLC to yield four fractions. The 30 – 40 min sub-fraction (F2-4) was selected for further analysis by mass spectroscopy. Five isolated peptides with amino acid sequences of AILQSYSAGKTK; 1,265.69 Da, ALNKTHLIQTK; 1,265.74 Da, LLVHAPVK; 875.55 Da, IPDAHPVK; 875.48 Da and VVVLRDGAVQQLGTPR; 1,706.97 Da were identified. The F2-4 had higher DPPH and NO radical scavenging activity compared to the synthetic peptide. Moreover, AILQSYSAGKTK had the highest ABTS radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, the F2 fraction protected oxidation-induced DNA damage in pBR322, pKS and pUC19 cells. F2 fraction was selected to study anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Anti-inflammatory effect, F2 fraction showed no cytotoxicity toward RAW264.7 macrophage cells. RT-PCR and qRT-PCR results showed that F2 reduced gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines iNOS, TNF-α, COX-1, COX-2 and IL-6. For anticancer activity, F2 fraction showed high anticancer activities in the human colon cancer cells (SW620) according to cytotoxic activity (MTT assay), with IC50 values of 106.58±21.46 µg protein/mL. The F2 fraction activated the apoptotic pathway in SW620 cells after treatment for 24, 48 and 72 hours. The highest activities of caspases 3, 8 and 9 were observed after treatment for 72 hours. These findings suggested that unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. may be used to develop for natural anti-inflammation and natural anticancer drugs.

Fluoride Encapsulation In Calcium Matrix, Piyada Dissara
Fluoride Encapsulation In Calcium Matrix, Piyada Dissara
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Fluoride ion (F-) is an important ingredient in a toothpaste. It protects caries by reacting with hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO)4(OH)2] in tooth enamel to form insoluble fluorapatite [Ca10(PO)4(F)2]. Unfortunately, F- also easily interacts with calcium species in a toothpaste, and then it is deactivated. In this work, we focus on the encapsulation of F- in a shellac bead by using a simple extrusion method. To construct shellac beads, an aqueous solution of F- is injected into an ethanolic solution of shellac. The shellac beads are formed due to insolubility of shellac in water. Then, the beads are transferred into DI water for …

Ferrocene-Bearing Tea Polyphenol Particles As Anticancer Drug Carriers, Punnawich Phaiyarin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Ferrocene is a redox moiety that can be positively charged upon being oxidized. Thus, it is possible to use this moiety to make a polymer platform that is redox responsive regarding their water solubility. Here we prepared polymerized EGCG nanoparticles (pEGCG) and polymerized EGCG gum (pEGCG-gum) from tea polyphenol EGCG. Ferrocene was grafted onto the polymerized tea polyphenol and the obtained polymers were allowed to self-assemble into water-insoluble and indispersible sub-micron particles. The water-insoluble ferrocene-bearing particles became water-dispersible particles with nanometer sizes upon being oxidized by hydrogen peroxide. The oxidized particles, Fc-pEG-gum can inhibit growth of HepG2 liver cancer cells …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cysteine is a sulphur-containing amino acid that acts as an effective antioxidant in human body. An excessive amount of cysteine leads to cystine formation that causes the stone formation in kidney, bladder, and ureters. A new method was developed for detection of cysteine in urine samples based on the aggregation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on Hydroxyapatite (HAp) in the presence of cysteine. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) was used to observe the morphology of prepared HAp and AgNPs on HAp. The presence of cysteine of different concentrations resulted in different cluster sizes of AgNPs on HAp and hence different solid color. …

A new method for thiocyanate determination in milk samples based on the formation of dithiocyanato dipyridine copper(II) [Cu(SCN)2(Py)2] complex on polymer resin surface is proposed. Amberlite XAD-7 resin on was modified with copper-pyridine complex and used as the material for detection. The color of resin changed from blue to green with the increase of thiocyanate concentration. It could be observed by naked-eye and the color intensity used as quantitative data was measured via Image-J software. The effect of various parameters was investigated including Cu2+ concentration, time for resin modification with reagents, sample volume, detection time and pyridine volume. Under the …
