Effects Of High Intensity Ultrasound Frequency And High-Speed Agitation On Fat Crystallization, Roberta Silva, Juhee Lee, V. Gibon, Silvana Martini
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
The objective of this research was to examine the effect of ultrasound frequency and high-speed agitation on lipid crystallization. Interesterified soybean oil was crystallized at 44 °C without and with the application of high intensity ultrasound (HIU—20 and 40 kHz) or with high-speed agitation (6000 and 24,000 rpm). Two tip amplitudes (24 and 108 µm) and three pulse durations were evaluated (5, 10, and 15 s) for the acoustic frequencies tested. Sonication at 20 kHz of frequency significantly reduced crystal size, increased (p < 0.05) elasticity (435.9 ± 173.3–80,218 ± 15,384 Pa) and SFC (0.2 ± 0.0–4.5 ± 0.4%). No significant difference was observed in the crystallization behavior of these samples when sonicated at different amplitudes for 5 and 10 s. The crystallization behavior was significantly delayed (p < 0.05) in samples sonicated using 108 µm amplitude for 15 s. Larger crystals were formed in samples sonicated at 40 kHz compared to those obtained with 20 kHz and lower SFC (3.7 ± 0.0%) and elasticity (3943 ± 1459 Pa) values were obtained. High-speed agitation at 24,000 rpm increased SFC (5.5 ± 0.1%) and crystallized area and decreased the elasticity (42,602 ± 11,775 Pa) compared to the samples sonicated at 20 kHz.

Low incomes, limited financial literacy, fraud, and deception are just a few of the many intractable economic and social factors that contribute to the financial difficulties that households face today. Addressing these issues directly is difficult and costly. But poor financial outcomes also result from systematic psychological tendencies, including imperfect optimization, biased judgments and preferences, and susceptibility to influence by the actions and opinions of others. Some of these psychological tendencies and the problems they cause may be countered by policies and interventions that are both low cost and scalable. We detail the ways that these behavioral factors contribute to …

A Systems Biology Approach For Predicting Essential Genes And Deciphering Their Dynamics Under Stress In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Fadi El-Rami
Theses and Dissertations
Infectious diseases are the top leading cause of death worldwide. Identifying essential genes, genes indispensable for survival, has been proven indispensable in defining new therapeutic targets against pathogens, major elements of the minimal set genome to be harnessed in synthetic biology, and determinants of evolutionary relationships of phylogenetically distant species. Thus, essentiality studies promise valuable revenues that can decipher much of biological complexities.
Taking advantage of the available microbial sequences and the essentiality studies conducted in various microbial models, we proposed a framework for the prediction of essential genes based on our experimentally verified knowledge of the pathways involved in …

The increase of poverty in suburban communities since the year 2000 has fundamentally changed the work of elementary school principals in suburban schools. Using a qualitative method, 10 suburban elementary school principals from the Chicago metropolitan area were interviewed to gain a deeper understanding of their perceptions of working with suburban elementary school students from poverty. Principals revealed that they see poverty as having a deficit influence on suburban elementary students. They defined that they see the role of principal as helping students gain from the school experience by reducing the obstacles to learning that poverty presents and, therefore, providing …
Three Essays In Health Economics, Abraham Abebe Asfaw
Three Essays In Health Economics, Abraham Abebe Asfaw
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation constitutes three separate essays in health economics. The first essay examines whether Medicare Part D led to changes in the health behaviors that are essential to manage chronic diseases. Using data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, I find that the implementation of Medicare Part D reduces the probability of engaging in physical exercise. The effect on dieting is inconsistent across different specifications and the effect on cigarette smoking is not statistically significant. The negative physical exercise effect of Medicare Part D is more pronounced among patients with low educational attainment. The second essay looks into whether early …
Competition And Community Interactions Of Two Generalist Herbivores, Elizabeth Ellen Barnes
Competition And Community Interactions Of Two Generalist Herbivores, Elizabeth Ellen Barnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Competition can have far-reaching consequences for the fitness and distribution of many organisms. In herbivorous insects, competition mediated by a third organism is more common than direct competition and has a strong effect on insect communities; yet most research on indirect competition among herbivores focuses on dietary specialists, and those studies that do include generalists tend to rear them on agricultural crops. My project examines species interactions at three levels: intraspecific competition (within species), interspecific competition (between species), and ecosystem engineering effects at the community level. I studied competition and community interactions of two temporally-separated species of herbivorous insects, western …

Effect Of Nutrition And Growth Conditions On D-Cycloserine Sensitivity Of Escherichia Coli, Poornima Vasireddy
Effect Of Nutrition And Growth Conditions On D-Cycloserine Sensitivity Of Escherichia Coli, Poornima Vasireddy
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
D-cycloserine (DCS) is a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces orchidaceus. It is a structural analog of D-alanine and it is used for the treatment of antibiotic resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in conjunction with other first line drugs like isoniazid and rifampin. It inhibits the synthesis of the cell wall by inhibiting the enzymes alanine racemase and D-alanyl-D-alanine ligase. In previous studies, three DCS resistant Escherichia coli mutants were isolated by Curtiss et al (1965). Wargel et al (1971). identified in these mutants that cycA is responsible for the transport of DCS. Later, a study by Baisa et al (2013) …
