In Vitro Evaluation Of Plla/Pbs Sponges As A Promisingbiodegradable Scaffold For Neural Tissue Engineering, İrem Ayşe Kanneci̇ Altinişik, Fatma Neşe Kök, Deni̇z Yücel, Gamze Köse

Turkish Journal of Biology

In tissue engineering, the use of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/polybutylene succinate (PBS) blend for the construction of scaffold is very limited. Moreover, polymeric sponges fabricated from PLLA/PBS have not been studied for neural tissue engineering. In the present study, the potential of the utility of PLLA/PBS polymeric sponges seeded with Schwann cells was investigated. PLLA and PBS were blended in order to increase the processability and tune the crystallinity, porosity, and degradation rate of the resulted polymeric sponges. These sponges were then seeded with Schwann cells. Porosity analysis showed that there were no significant differences between different compositions of PLLA/PBS blends; …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Upon irradiation, marine polysaccharides undergo depolymerization, leading to formation of oligosaccharides that elicit various biological activities in plants. Taking a step further on the previously established growth-promoting activity of irradiated sodium alginate (ISA), structural rearrangements in ISA were analyzed using complementary techniques to develop an understanding of the structure-property relationship. The essential oil (EO) of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L. Nash) immensely benefits the perfumery industry, proving itself as an economically important crop. A pot experiment was designed to test the effect of water-soluble ISA fractions on the growth, physiology, and EO production of vetiver. The structural characterization of radiation-induced sodium …

Among these, 80 mg L-1 ICN (treatment 4) proved to be the best for most …

The Role Of Predicted Spermidine Family Transporters In Stressresponse And Cell Cycle In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Aslihan Gevrekci̇ Jan 2017

The Role Of Predicted Spermidine Family Transporters In Stressresponse And Cell Cycle In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Aslihan Gevrekci̇

Turkish Journal of Biology

Fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe has a variety of stress-signaling proteins that protect cells against environmental or intracellular stress. These proteins help the cells to respond to stress conditions and regulate intracellular functions such as cell division or gene expression. Polyamines (spermidine, spermine, and putrescine) are known to be important in the regulation of stress response and cell division. In this study, we tried to experimentally characterize novel S. pombe genes that are involved in the polyamine pathway and understand their potential roles. Sequence analysis revealed four genes that code for (predicted) spermidine family transporters in S. pombe. In an attempt …

Do Step- And Biological Grandparents Show Differences In Investment And Emotional Closeness With Their Grandchildren?, Peter B. Gray, Elizabeth Brogdon

Anthropology Faculty Research

Human children are raised by a variety of caregivers including grandparents. A few studies have assessed potential differences in direct caregiving, financial expenditures, and emotional closeness between biological and step-grandparents. Drawing upon kin selection theory, we hypothesized that step-grandparents would provide less care and be less emotionally close to grandchildren than would biological grandparents. A sample of 341 heterosexual U.S. adults 25-35 years of age in a long-term partnership and with a biological child 5 years of age or younger were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Subjects provided sociodemographic information and answered questions about the dynamics between their own parent/stepparent …

Utilization Of Waist Circumference To Determine Type 2 Diabetes Risk Among Normal And Overweight Individuals, Mary Angela M. Terencio, Brian Schilling, Hayley Esdaile, Grace Mcdonald

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether noninvasive measurements such as waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are effective for people who have a normal to overweight BMI in determining risk for type 2 diabetes. 29 million US adults have diabetes and 86 million have prediabetes. Numerous studies have indicated waist circumference as a strong predictor of type 2 diabetes in obese individuals. However there are few that research the effects of these anthropometric measurements with individuals who look lean but are potentially metabolically obese.

The Gracchi And The Era Of Grain Reform In Ancient Rome, Samuel Aly

Tenor of Our Times

The transition from Republic to Principate represents a significant moment in the history of Roman agriculture. The supply of food had been relatively constant for centuries, but many unprecedented issues caused by the rapidly expanding city needed to be addressed. This transitory period is characterized by many influential politicians, like the memorable Gracchi brothers, and many reforms made by other Roman leaders, ending with the beginning of the Empire under Augustus. The Gracchi and Augustus took great care with the food supply of the common citizens through a critical, turbulent time for both the political and social aspects of Roman life.

Using bivariate analysis to evaluate statistical significance, 5 of 19 possible variables were included in our logistic regression model. This model demonstrated higher likelihood of a request for resuscitation …

Exploring The Role Of Dopamine Circuits In Eating Behavior, Kara Elizabeth Furman Jan 2017

Exploring The Role Of Dopamine Circuits In Eating Behavior, Kara Elizabeth Furman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

In its simplest terms, obesity is a disease of exaggerated food intake. While current treatment of obesity focuses on changing behavior, few successful models of behavior modification have been developed. Even those treatments that are successful in the short-term, have failed to demonstrate lasting effect. The problem of over-eating, then, needs to be studied in terms of basic motivational programs that are encoded by the brain’s reward system. Understanding the way in which reward system activity directs eating behavior will allow more sophisticated and efficacious treatment options in the future. Several studies have focused on the nucleus accumbens (NAc) as …

Ichthyosis: Assessing Severity And Genotype-Phenotype Correlations, Nareh Valerie Marukian Jan 2017

Ichthyosis: Assessing Severity And Genotype-Phenotype Correlations, Nareh Valerie Marukian

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The ichthyoses, also known as disorders of keratinization (DOK), encompass a group of genetic skin disorders linked by the common finding of abnormal barrier function, which initiates a default compensatory pathway of hyperproliferation, resulting in the characteristic clinical manifestation of localized or generalized scaling.

Ichthyoses are a highly heterogenous group of disorders, both genetically and clinically. Despite the identification of causative mutations in over 50 genes, clear genotype-phenotype correlations have been difficult to establish due to the rarity of the ichthyoses and because mutations in the same gene can have widely divergent phenotypes, even in individuals with the same disease-causing …

Self-Reported Adherence To Physical Activity For Cancer Survivors: An Update From The 2015 Nhis Database, Andrew Jackson Shearer

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in America. It’s been suggested that regular physical activity (PA) can improve health outcomes in cancer survivors. An estimate from BRFSS data (2009) suggested that 47% of all cancer survivors met recommended guidelines and that this estimate was not different from the population at large (48%). Several factors were examined from these BRFSS data to determine whether subgroups of survivors existed who might benefit from interventions aimed at improving their PA status. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain more recent estimates of adherence to established PA guidelines for cancer survivors. …
