Nurses’ Knowledge Of Alcohol-Interactive Medications, Kyle Serafico
Nurses’ Knowledge Of Alcohol-Interactive Medications, Kyle Serafico
Honors Projects
Nearly 57% of adult Americans report drinking alcohol in the past month, and 41.5% of current drinkers take alcohol-interactive (AI) medications. Concurrent consumption of both substances can result in adverse interactions. Nurses are in a position to screen and appropriately teach patients. However, little is known about nurses’ knowledge of AI medications. The purpose of this study is to determine nurses’ knowledge of AI medications and factors that may affect knowledge level. The Jarvis Nursing Knowledge of Alcohol-Interactive Medications survey was developed and distributed to nurses employed by a large Midwestern health system. The final analyzed sample of nurses (n …

Risk Parameters And Assessment Of Dietary Dsrna Exposure In Folsomia Candida, Jeffrey Edward Noland
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Assessing the risk of transgenic crop products is essential when determining the safety of a crop for deregulation and commercialization. The Organization of Economic and Cooperative Development (OECD), International Standards Organization (ISO), and governmental regulatory agencies require a battery of tests to demonstrate the safety of a GM product against several surrogate species of organisms that perform various ecosystem services. Assays are performed using toxicology methods established for pesticides. These methods have been applied to testing the safety, specificity and fate of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry protein toxins engineered into crop plants and information exists on the effects on non-target …

The Effect Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivations On Health Behavior In College Students: A Systematic Review, Kristen Melendez, Sharon Jalene
AANAPISI Poster Presentations
When measuring the weight of individuals to create healthy lifestyle plans with proper diet and exercise it is alarming how many people follow even the MINIMUM requirement to live a long healthy life. Research has proven that even people who are aware that they are overweight will likely only have a short-lived maintenance of healthy behaviors. Therefore, both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations were examined in order to better understand the difference between the population who maintains healthy lifestyles and those whose healthy habits are not sustained. Methods: A systematic review process was used to filter and screen for applicable studies …

Taxes, Transfers, And Women's Labor Supply In The United States, Melanie Guldi, Lucie Schmidt
Taxes, Transfers, And Women's Labor Supply In The United States, Melanie Guldi, Lucie Schmidt
Economics: Faculty Publications
The US tax and transfer system generates revenue and provides safety net programs that move millions out of poverty. Since women are more likely to live in poverty, they are more likely to qualify for means-tested transfers. The structure of taxation in the United States often penalizes secondary earners, who are usually women. These programs alter work incentives and consequently may affect labor supply decisions. In this chapter, we examine the empirical evidence on the effects of taxes and transfers on the labor supply of women in the United States. We show that much has changed since 1990, with the …

Ensuring Adolescents In Uttar Pradesh Stay—And Learn—In School, Sapna Desai, Neelanjana Pandey
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Government of India has invested in improving education through two key programs for universal access to, and retention in, secondary education. In Uttar Pradesh, the Population Council found high levels of enrollment among younger adolescents, with limited gender disparity. Retention beyond elementary school, however, was low, and learning outcomes—literacy and numeracy—were poor. This policy brief focuses on two challenges to preparing Uttar Pradesh’s adolescents for the future: universal enrollment and retention in secondary school. The brief outlines recommendations that the government invest in secondary schooling, improve school facilities, support and evaluate quality teaching inputs and curriculum changes, remove economic …

Heart Disease And African Americans, Patricia Guy-Walls, Jody Long
Heart Disease And African Americans, Patricia Guy-Walls, Jody Long
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Good health depends on multiple factors, including financial status. Higher socioeconomic status correlates with a lower risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Lukachko, Hatzenbuehler, and Keyes (2014) stated that the advantages of income status make a difference with health, specifically heart disease. Another significant factor affecting heart disease is health care disparity. Kahng (2010) found that the accumulative impact of health care disparities experienced over a lifetime contributes to chronic stress and heart-related problems.
Despite advancement in care, more African Americans, compared with other racial groups, die from cardiovascular disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). Several …
Desiring To Appear Moral Versus Being Moral: Development Of Moral Hypocrisy And Moral Integrity, Kathleen Tamming
Desiring To Appear Moral Versus Being Moral: Development Of Moral Hypocrisy And Moral Integrity, Kathleen Tamming
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Moral hypocrisy has been defined as “the motivation to appear moral while acting in one’s self interest, and therefore avoiding the cost of actually being moral” (Batson, Kobrynowicz, Dinnerstein, Kampf, & Wilson, 1997). This is in contrast with moral integrity, or the motivation to actually be moral. Experimental research with adults has indicated that people are more highly motivated by moral hypocrisy than by moral integrity (Batson, Thompson, & Chen, 2002). However, this research has yet to be conducted with a variety of age groups. The present study investigated whether there are age differences in individuals’ tendency to engage in …
