Evaluation Of Remote Sensing Technologies For Bull Kelp Detection In The Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, Melina Shak
Evaluation Of Remote Sensing Technologies For Bull Kelp Detection In The Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, Melina Shak
Master's Projects and Capstones
The Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS), located off the coast of Northern California contains approximately 90% of the region’s bull kelp. Bull kelp is a foundational species that provides food and shelter supporting diverse marine ecosystems, but due to recent anthropogenic stressors, 90% of kelp forests along the California coast have been lost. The Greater Farallones Association (GFA) is actively working on restoration efforts, where monitoring is essential for assessing recovery success. My research addresses GFA’s need to reduce reliance on intensive, time-consuming Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) surveys by identifying accurate, cost-effective, and scalable remote sensing technologies for kelp …
The Biology Of Green Antelopehorn Milkweed (Asclepias Viridis Walter) And Hemp Dogbane (Apocynum Cannabinum L.) And Response To Triclopyr Formulations And Other Auxin Herbicides, Kayla L. Broster
Theses and Dissertations
Studies were conducted in Oktibbeha and Clay Counties in Mississippi to determine the response of green antelopehorn milkweed and hemp dogbane to triclopyr and other auxin herbicides in non-cropland areas. These studies were conducted at four locations with well established populations for each species throughout 2020 to 2023, with applications repeated at each location the following year if populations persisted. Treatments included a high and low rate of each herbicide studied, with all four triclopyr formulations included for both species. Injury response data were collected two and four weeks after treatment and population density data were evaluated using individual stem …
Rapid Kinetic Fluorogenic Quantification Of Malondialdehyde In Ground Beef, Keshav Raj Bhandari
Rapid Kinetic Fluorogenic Quantification Of Malondialdehyde In Ground Beef, Keshav Raj Bhandari
Theses and Dissertations
Presented herein is rapid kinetic fluorogenic method to quantify malondialdehyde (MDA) in ground beef, utilizing 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) as the fluorogenic probe. This assay significantly shortens the total analysis time, from sample preparation to data acquisition, to just six minutes presenting a major advancement over traditional methods that typically require two hours and multiple instruments. The assay’s robustness against matrix interferences was validated using sample volume variation and standard addition calibration methods. Additionally, the effects of ambient exposure to air, washing, and cooking on MDA content in raw ground beef were quantified. While both ambient exposure to air and cooking …
Trace Mineral Supplementation Strategies For Beef Cattle During Preconditioning And Feedlot Receiving, Madeline G. Mcknight
Trace Mineral Supplementation Strategies For Beef Cattle During Preconditioning And Feedlot Receiving, Madeline G. Mcknight
Theses and Dissertations
Beef cattle routinely undergo a variety of stressors within the preconditioning and feedlot receiving phases which may impair animal performance and health. Trace mineral supplementation, either through dietary or injectable sources, is proposed to mitigate these effects through metabolic and immune system support. Two systematic reviews and meta-analyses were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two different oral supplementation methods, organic (OTM) and inorganic (INR), and injectable trace mineral (ITM) solutions on average daily gain (ADG) and morbidity. Across 20 studies, OTM supplementation increased ADG (P = 0.01) when compared to INR, but did not affect morbidity (P = 0.92). …
Spatiotemporal Ecology Of Mycobacterium Ulcerans And Mycolactone Functions In French Guiana And Southeastern United States Aquatic Environments, Magdalene Dogbe
Spatiotemporal Ecology Of Mycobacterium Ulcerans And Mycolactone Functions In French Guiana And Southeastern United States Aquatic Environments, Magdalene Dogbe
Theses and Dissertations
Mycobacterium ulcerans, the causative agent of Buruli ulcer, produces mycolactone, a polyketide toxin traditionally studied for its role in human pathogenesis. This dissertation presents a comprehensive spatiotemporal analysis of M. ulcerans and mycolactone producing mycobacteria (MPM) ecology in the Americas and also reveals mycolactone's role in the environment as a microbial community regulator. Through comparative studies in French Guiana (endemic) and the southeastern United States (non-endemic), combined with experimental microcosm investigations, this research contributes to environmental pathogen ecology understanding. Environmental surveillance across 2,226 samples from French Guiana revealed complete MPM restriction to freshwater environments, with zero detections from 1,226 coastal …
Evaluating The Effects Of Biostimulants On Apple Coloration, Patrick G. Owens
Evaluating The Effects Of Biostimulants On Apple Coloration, Patrick G. Owens
Theses and Dissertations
Apple peel color is one determining factor of apple quality and is a highly sought after trait by both growers and consumers. Historically plant growth regulators (PGRs) such as daminozide and auxins have been used to induce a greater amount of red color in the peel, but these products typically have negative production impacts and raise environmental concerns. One new area of interest is in called biostimulants. This study investigated the effects of two experimental biostimulants (MCEN1 and MCEN2) applied at varying rates and timings, as well as a commercially available plant growth regulator (Blush® 2X), on ‘Honeycrisp’ apple color …
Study Of Insect Frass-Associated Microbiome On Plant Growth And Their Potential Use As Biofertilizer, Jasmine Sahota
Study Of Insect Frass-Associated Microbiome On Plant Growth And Their Potential Use As Biofertilizer, Jasmine Sahota
Theses and Dissertations
An increasing global food demand and the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices have driven interest in insects as alternative feed and food sources. Insect frass, a by-product of insect rearing, represents a rich organic carbon source with diverse microbes that can enhance soil health and promote beneficial plant-microbe interactions. This study characterized the bacterial (16S-V4) and fungal (ITS2) microbiomes of frass from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) and Cricket species and evaluated their effects on maize (Zea mays) growth. Four frass variants were applied at rates of 56-280 kg ha⁻¹ in a pot experiment with untreated soil and mineral fertilizer …
The Bioarchaeology Of Care In An Asylum Population: Studying Health-Related Caretaking In The Mississippi State Asylum, Hannah D. Willis
The Bioarchaeology Of Care In An Asylum Population: Studying Health-Related Caretaking In The Mississippi State Asylum, Hannah D. Willis
Theses and Dissertations
This study employed modified versions of the Bioarchaeology of Care (BoC) and the Index of Care (IoC) to assess signs of impairment, disability, and health-related caretaking within a sample of 15 individuals buried in the Asylum Hill Cemetery who were likely former patients at the Mississippi State Asylum (MSA). This aim is to explore perceptions of disability and health-related caretaking needs through a combination of skeletal evidence and historical documents. Twelve individuals likely experienced physical impairment and potentially disability through participation restrictions. Six individuals likely required health-related caretaking, and healing lesions suggest they may have received care while at the …
The Soil Greenhouse Gas Flux And Climate Mitigation Potential Of Conservation Reserve Program With Tree Planting In The Southeastern U. S., Jianing Liang
Theses and Dissertations
Afforestation is increasingly promoted as a nature-based solution to climate change, although its net impact on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remains variable across forest types, prior land uses, and environmental conditions. This dissertation investigates the soil GHG flux (CO2, CH4, N2O) responses and dynamics of afforestation under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in the southeastern United States, with a specific focus on broadleaf and conifer tree planting practices. Drawing from a combination of meta-analysis, machine learning, and field-based observations across 73 sites, this research provides an integrated assessment of afforestation’s climate mitigation potential. In Chapter II, a meta-analysis of …
The Impact Of Land Use Types On Pollinator Communities In Upland Oak Forests, John Olanrewaju Omolewa
The Impact Of Land Use Types On Pollinator Communities In Upland Oak Forests, John Olanrewaju Omolewa
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates how land use types influence pollinator communities in upland oak forests, focusing on bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea). The study has four objectives: (1) compare bee species richness and abundance across four land use types; hardwood, pine/mixed pine, open fields/agricultural areas, and scattered hardwood; (2) test whether bee community composition differs among these land uses; (3) assess how land use shapes diversity of both common and rare bee species; and (4) investigate the reproductive output of cavity-nesting communities in upland oak forests. Together, these aims provide a comprehensive understanding of how land use practices affect wild bee communities in …
