• Prostate cancer and metabolic syndrome are both prevalent among men in developed countries with peak incidence after age 50.

• Prostate cancer has no known modifiable risk factors.

• Most risk factors for metabolic syndrome are modifiable.

• If metabolic syndrome is identified as contributing to the risk of prostate cancer it would give an element of self determination to men at risk for prostate cancer.

• Past studies provide conflicting results in the correlation between these two conditions.

• A literature review was performed to evaluate consistencies in current literature.

• Metabolic syndrome or its components do not …

Folate As An Adjunctive Therapy For Treatment Resistant Depression, Katherine Mcfarland Jan 2017

Folate As An Adjunctive Therapy For Treatment Resistant Depression, Katherine Mcfarland

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Numerous medications are available to treat depression, yet many patients do not achieve remission or recovery of their symptoms with traditional therapies alone. Folate supplementation has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of depression when used in addition to traditional prescription therapy. A literature review was conducted to determine the effect of low folate levels on depression and if supplementation with either folic acid or L-methylfolate benefits this patient population. Key search terms including folate, folate deficiency, methylfolate, nutrition, and depression were used to perform searches of multiple databases and journals including PubMed, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and the American …

Feeding Selectivity Of An Algivore (Tropheus Brichardi) In Lake Tanganyika, Robin Richardson-Coy Jan 2017

Feeding Selectivity Of An Algivore (Tropheus Brichardi) In Lake Tanganyika, Robin Richardson-Coy

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Algivorous fish remove attached algae (periphyton) from the benthos in near shore areas of lakes. Periphyton has a complex three-dimensional structure dominated by Bacillariophyta (diatoms), Chlorophyta (green algae), and Cyanophyta (cyanobacteria). These three phyla vary in nutritional quality with diatoms providing essential fatty acids that consumers need for growth and reproduction. Selection of specific phyla may be driven by nutritional quality or it may be a function accessibility due to both mouth morphology of the fish and location of the algae in the periphyton community. I investigated whether Tropheus brichardi, an algivorous cichlid of Lake Tanganyika, selectivity feeds on …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Wolf Restoration In Yellowstone Nation Park Using Omnivory Models, Derek Fields Jan 2017

Sensitivity Analysis Of Wolf Restoration In Yellowstone Nation Park Using Omnivory Models, Derek Fields

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In the ever-changing world of ecology, species survival often depends on approximations and measurements taken by biologists. These approximations help to ensure and predict the future of that given species. Our ecological community of interest involves wolves, elk, and berry producing shrubs within Yellowstone National Park. We use two different systems of ordinary differential equations, each increasing in complexity to model our community. In each model the predator (wolves) and consumers (elk) compete for a common resource, berry producing shrubs. We call this consumption of resources, from more than one trophic level, omnivory. We approximate each system with parameter values …

A Study Of The Influence Of Branded Messages On Non-Branded Food Items When Presented To 10 To 14-Year-Old Children, Cassandra J. Chinn Jan 2017

A Study Of The Influence Of Branded Messages On Non-Branded Food Items When Presented To 10 To 14-Year-Old Children, Cassandra J. Chinn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Children are more likely to create bonds with foods based on the environmental, socioeconomic and familial influences in their lives during early development stages. They gravitate to foods that are familiar to them and that are positioned with familiarity, creating an opportunity for branded food items to create more of a space in their psyche as part of their identity. Current research looks to reposition those energy-dense foods (commodity vegetables) that can often times be left unbranded, to see if immediate interest in the food items changes. Results found no significance to confirm nor deny a positive correlation in interest …

Response Of Grasshoppers To The Agricultural Mosaics Of The Cape Floristic Region Biodiversity Hotspot In South Africa, Samuel Adu-Acheampong Jan 2017

Response Of Grasshoppers To The Agricultural Mosaics Of The Cape Floristic Region Biodiversity Hotspot In South Africa, Samuel Adu-Acheampong

All PhD Dissertations

Agricultural production is one of the main drivers of the on-going biodiversity crisis. This has resulted in research on the impact of agriculture on biodiversity being at an all-time high. This is critical given that the world must produce food for the ever-growing human population. This growing demand for food often demands increasing production areas at the expense of protected ones. Such trade-offs can potentially lead to dire consequences on biodiversity and its associated ecosystem function. In an attempt to minimise this potential negative impact, and also to conserve biodiversity and its associated ecosystem function, scientists and producers have developed …

Nectar Feeding And Volatile Chemical Signatures Influencing Host Plant Selection In Major Afrotropical Mosquito Disease Vectors, Vincent Odhiambo Nyasembe Jan 2017

Nectar Feeding And Volatile Chemical Signatures Influencing Host Plant Selection In Major Afrotropical Mosquito Disease Vectors, Vincent Odhiambo Nyasembe

All PhD Dissertations

Although it is widely accepted that plant resources play an important role in the biology of mosquito species, the preferred mosquito host plants in the natural habitats remain largely unknown. The persistence of mosquito-borne diseases and the re-emergence of others such as Zika have created the need for novel control strategies with plant feeding becoming a new focus for such strategies. Effective deployment of these new tools requires an accurate identification of preferred host plant species that are attractive to mosquitoes. Chapter two of this study explored the potential of a single component plant-based lure, linalool oxide (LO), previously developed …

Ecological, Behavioural And Biochemical Traits Of African Meliponine Bee Species (Apidae:Meliponini) In A Biodiverse Hotspot Of Kenya, Bridget Obhagiagie Aito-Bobadoye

All PhD Dissertations

This study was carried out with the aim of assessing habitat ecology and behavioral mechanisms critical for the survival of African meliponine bee species. This will help to fully decipher how they effectively communicate information amongst colony members during two vital ecological processes (colony defense and foraging). Surveys of the floral phenology of potential food plants of African meliponine bees (Apidae: meliponini) in six diverse habitat gradients, observed that most flowering plants overlapped across seasons, which could potentially provide both floral resources (nectar and pollen) to foraging; meliponine bee species. Approximately 80 different plant species belonging to 34 families were …

A Spanner In The Works: Human–Elephant Conflict Complicates The Food–Water–Energy Nexus In Drylands Of Africa, Bruce Schulte, Mwangi Githiru, Urbanus Mutwiwa, Simon Kasaine

Biology Faculty Publications

The two major conservation issues for drylands of Africa are habitat loss or degradation and habitat fragmentation, largely fromagriculture, charcoal production, and infrastructural development. A key question for management is how these landscapes can retain their critical ecological functions and services, while simultaneously supporting resilient livelihoods. It is a clear nexus question involving food (agriculture), water, and energy (fuelwood), which is complicated by human–wildlife conflicts. While these could appear disparate issues, they are closely connected in dryland forest landscapes of Africa where elephants occur close to areas of human habitation. For instance, crop failure, whether due to weather or wildlife …

Microbial Ecology Of Fresh Vegetables, J. Zheng, A. De Jesus, S. Sahu, A. E. Hayford, Y. Luo, A. R. Datta, E. W. Brown, R. Bell

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

The total consumption of fresh and processed vegetables has exceeded 123 kg per capita in the United States and 118 kg per capita in the European Union (http://www.helgilibrary.com/ indicators/index/vegetable‐consumption‐percapita) in 2009. Changes in lifestyles and consumption trends have prompted the sustained growth of fresh‐cut or minimally processed vegetables that are fresh and ready‐to‐eat (RTE). In 2011, for example, total US fresh‐cut produce sales through both food service and retail channels were estimated to surpass $27 billion (Cook et al., 2012).

A Human Gut Commensal Ferments Cranberry Carbohydrates To Produce Formate, Ezgi Özcan, Jiadong Sun, David C. Rowley, David A. Sela

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Commensal bifidobacteria colonize the human gastrointestinal tract and catabolize glycans that are impervious to host digestion. Accordingly, Bifidobacterium longum typically secretes acetate and lactate as fermentative end products. This study tested the hypothesis that B. longum utilizes cranberry-derived xyloglucans in a strain-dependent manner. Interestingly, the B. longum strain that efficiently utilizes cranberry xyloglucans secretes 2.0 to 2.5 mol of acetate-lactate. The 1.5 acetate:lactate ratio theoretical yield obtained in hexose fermentations shifts during xyloglucan metabolism. Accordingly, this metabolic shift is characterized by increased acetate and formate production at the expense of lactate. α-l-Arabinofuranosidase, an arabinan endo-1,5-α-l-arabinosidase, and a β-xylosidase with a …
