Telephone Follow-Up To Reduce The Readmission Rate In Gynecologic Oncology Surgery Patients, Karla Kenyon Fernandez
Telephone Follow-Up To Reduce The Readmission Rate In Gynecologic Oncology Surgery Patients, Karla Kenyon Fernandez
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Unplanned hospital readmissions are commonly viewed as a marker of poor quality care and result in increased costs for both healthcare institutions and patients. Factors associated with readmission for gynecological oncology patients can be related to the radical surgical interventions required for the management of their disease, as well as complex comorbidity profiles, surgical complexity, cancer stage, and perioperative complications. The purpose of this study was to explore and examine the impact of nursing-led telephone follow up on the reduction of the readmission rate in gynecologic oncology abdominal surgery patients following initial discharge post-operatively. A cross-sectional research study was used …
Hospice Nurses’ Perception Of Factors Influencing Nurse Retention, Vanessa Kelly Boris
Hospice Nurses’ Perception Of Factors Influencing Nurse Retention, Vanessa Kelly Boris
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Aim. To identify factors that affect hospice nurses’ intent to remain employed. Background. Recent literature indicates that turnover is a major problem for health care organizations, since it is costly and negatively affects patient care. Several strategies have been highlighted to help improve retention rates, however hospice nurses have special needs. Methods. To assess hospice nurse perspectives, a survey was conducted using registered nurses working in a multi-county Hospice and Palliative Care facility in the southeastern U.S. Survey items were based on information gathered from previous focus groups exploring determinants of nurse retention. Results. Eighty-eight percent (n=7) of nurses chose …

Nurse-Physician Collaboration And Satisfaction, Fatima Brewton
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of interdisciplinary rounds (IDR) on a neurology medical-surgical inpatient unit. Existing research shows that IDR improves nurse-physician relationships and satisfaction and improves patient outcomes. Using the Collaboration and Satisfaction about Care Decisions (CSACD) tool developed by Baggs, nurse-physician collaboration and satisfaction was measured pre and post implementation of interdisciplinary rounds. Twenty-one nurses and five physicians participated in the study which included education sessions, a two week trial of IDR, and a pre and post survey. Nurses and physicians in this sample perceived a significant increase in collaboration (X = 5.6563, …
Correlation Between Self-Appraisal And Measured Risk For Prediabetes, Amanda Sowell
Correlation Between Self-Appraisal And Measured Risk For Prediabetes, Amanda Sowell
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
One-third of adults in the United States have prediabetes and 90% of those individuals are unaware they have the disease. Prediabetes is a disease where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as prediabetes. The purpose of this thesis was to identify adults at risk for prediabetes in a rural community setting, and explore the relationship between adults’ perceived risk for prediabetes and actual measured risk for prediabetes as determined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Prediabetes Screening Test. The organizing framework was based on Betty Neuman’s systems model. The participants of …

Effects Of Engaging Hospitalized Heart Failure Patients In A Self-Care Management Protocol On Self-Care Self-Confidence Levels, Michele Denise Blakely
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Delivering high quality heart failure (HF) management and education to empower patients to manage successfully in the community is imperative. Common trends observed impacting HF patients and concerning inpatient nurses on a medical cardiology unit were identified and discussed. Understanding accessing and adhering to a low salt diet, fluid restriction, and daily weights were all commonly identified challenges by direct care nurses of HF patients. Nurses reported increased frustration with patients not knowing or possessing little awareness of their fluid restriction or how to manage or articulate restrictions during the inpatient stay. Nurses felt intake and output (I&O) and daily …
Ethics For International Medicine: A Practical Guide For Aid Workers In Developing Countries, Anji E. Wall
Ethics For International Medicine: A Practical Guide For Aid Workers In Developing Countries, Anji E. Wall
Dartmouth College Press
About the Book
In recent years, international medicine has become a growth industry. International aid organizations, religious organizations, and medical schools all provide opportunities for health care workers to travel to developing countries to provide needed medical care to the world's poorest citizens. Ethics for International Medicine explores the many challenges faced by these medical aid workers from the West: They serve in settings with limited medical supplies, facilities, and personnel. Their patients speak different languages, have different cultures, and may even have different interpretations of disease. With limited time in which to provide medical care to hundreds of people …

- In the middle of my second year we sent out ads soliciting applications for an ethnomusicologist. I determined that if we were going to be a two-person music department, and since I was covering western music, we needed somebody to cover the rest of the world. Or as much of it as possible. That search brought in Tom Lipiczky as my colleague, which as far as I was concerned was a very happy hiring. It …

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Kenneth Boulding maintains that the economy is comprised not just of an exchange system (twoway transfers), but also of a grants system (one-way transfers), where the latter arises to bridge gaps in the former. This paper uses Boulding’s unconventional framework to analyze the modern economy of the United States. I investigate grants issued by the government, by families, and by private entities, and reveal their respective inabilities to adequately mitigate inequality and unemployment in the exchange economy. I show that the current grants system is unable to bridge the gaps in exchange, and that the grants expansion that would be …

African American Mothers' Narratives Of Breastfeeding Support From Healthcare Providers, Tessa Treadwell
African American Mothers' Narratives Of Breastfeeding Support From Healthcare Providers, Tessa Treadwell
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Research indicates that African American women breastfeed at the lowest rates of any racial/ethnic group in the U.S. Breastfeeding has shown to have numerous health benefits for both mother and baby, making the lower rates of breastfeeding among African Americans a public health concern. Racial disparities in healthcare may contribute to these discrepancies. This research will analyze the perceptions of information and social support for breastfeeding provided by healthcare providers among a sample of African American mothers who breastfed their babies. The study asks: Do participants regard their healthcare providers as supportive of breastfeeding? Data were collected through in-depth qualitative …

Coding/functional SNPs change the biological function of a gene and, therefore, could serve as “large-effect” genetic markers. In this study, we used two bioinformatics pipelines, GATK and SAMtools, for discovering coding/functional SNPs with allelic-imbalances associated with total body weight, muscle yield, muscle fat content, shear force, and whiteness. Phenotypic data were collected for approximately 500 fish, representing 98 families (5 fish/family), from a growth-selected line, and the muscle transcriptome was sequenced from 22 families with divergent phenotypes (4 low- versus 4 high-ranked families per trait).
Results
GATK detected 59,112 putative SNPs; of these SNPs, 4798 showed allelic imbalances (>2.0 …

Eating For The Environment: The Potential Of Dietary Guidelines To Achieve Better Human And Environmental Health Outcomes, Margaret Sova Mccabe
Eating For The Environment: The Potential Of Dietary Guidelines To Achieve Better Human And Environmental Health Outcomes, Margaret Sova Mccabe
Law Faculty Scholarship
Agriculture and food production contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution. Shifting human dietary patterns has the potential to reduce such environmental harms while also promoting human health. Government policy, in the form of the United States Dietary Guidelines (USDG), recommends what Americans should eat and could play an important role in shifting the food system to one that is more sustainable. However, the USDG are an overlooked aspect of U.S. food policy. While many countries have moved to synthesize environmental goals with dietary guidance, the United States has taken the opposite approach. In 2015, despite recommendations from …
Attorney Negligence And Negligent Spoliation: The Need For New Tools To Prompt Attorney Competence In Preservation, Paula Schaefer
Attorney Negligence And Negligent Spoliation: The Need For New Tools To Prompt Attorney Competence In Preservation, Paula Schaefer
Scholarly Works
Though case law typically suggests otherwise, attorney negligence is the primary cause of negligent spoliation of evidence. With the advent of ediscovery, it became markedly more difficult for attorneys to competently guide their clients through the steps necessary to preserve evidence – particularly the categories of evidence most likely to help an opponent in a case. Unlike intentional spoliation instigated by an attorney, negligent spoliation is not the product of calculation. If an attorney were to undertake a cost-benefit analysis, negligent spoliation would not be a rational choice. The field of behavioral legal ethics provides insight into other reasons attorneys …

Generalized Confidence Intervals Compatible With The Min Test For Simultaneous Comparisons Of One Subpopulation To Several Other Subpopulations, Julia N. Soulakova
Generalized Confidence Intervals Compatible With The Min Test For Simultaneous Comparisons Of One Subpopulation To Several Other Subpopulations, Julia N. Soulakova
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
A problem where one subpopulation is compared to several other subpopulations in terms of means with the goal of estimating the smallest difference between the means commonly arises in biology, medicine, and many other scientific fields. A generalization of Strassburger, Bretz and Hochberg (2004) approach for two comparisons is presented for cases with three and more comparisons. The method allows constructing an interval-estimator for the smallest mean difference, which is compatible with the Min test. An application to a fluency-disorder study is illustrated. Simulations confirmed adequate probability coverage for normally distributed outcomes for a number of designs.

Book Chapters
The advent of the affordable and accessible Internet in our society, especially in the urban areas, has changed the way our students can diversify their knowledge input today. Gone are the days when the students have to depend solely on ‘lectures’ delivered by their teachers in college. With wireless broadband, hotspots, cyber cafes, cloud computing, and the ‘free laptops’ around, it is essential for the students (and teachers) to posit the available online video lectures along with the classroom lecturers, prescribed syllabus and curricula in a holistic higher education approach. A cursory look at the various resources available on the …

- Forest pests drive tree mortality through disruption of functional traits linked to nutrient acquisition, growth and reproduction. The impacts of attack by individual or multiple above‐ground herbivores on root functional traits critical to tree health have received little attention. This is especially true for exotic herbivores, organisms often found in disturbed forests.
- We excavated whole‐root systems from eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) individuals experimentally infested with hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA: Adelges tsugae) and elongate hemlock scale (EHS: Fiorina externa) individually, or in combination, for periods of 2 and 4 years. Below‐ground root biomass, functional traits and storage …

Modeling Multiple Health Behaviors And General Health, Kelsey Elise Ufholz, Lisa L. Harlow
Psychology Faculty Publications
Multiple Health Behavior Change assumes health behaviors are related to one another, although research evidence is mixed. More research is needed to understand which behaviors are most closely related and how they collectively predict health. Principle component analysis and structural equation modeling were used to establish a model showing relations between health behaviors, including fruit/vegetable consumption, aerobic and strength exercise, alcohol intake, and smoking, and how these behaviors relate to general physical and mental health functioning in a large, national sample. Although health behaviors were found to coalesce into a health-promoting factor of diet, and exercise, a better overall model …

Background: Exposure to chemicals during critical windows of development may re-program liver for increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Bisphenol A (BPA), a plastics component, has been described to impart adverse effects during gestational and lactational exposure. Our work has pointed to nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) being a modulator of hepatic lipid accumulation in models of NAFLD.
Objectives: To determine if chemical exposure can prime liver for steatosis via modulation of NRF2 and epigenetic mechanisms.
Methods: Utilizing BPA as a model exposure, pregnant CD-1 mice were administered 25μg/kg/day" role="presentation">25μg/kg/day BPA via osmotic …
