Honors Undergraduate Research

Over the course of fifteen weeks, fourteen students and two professors explored the Criminal Justice System and the immense challenges faced by citizens as they attempt to reintegrate into their communities after being incarcerated. Through the lens of Systems Thinking, a system pioneered and described by Peter Senge, we dissected seemingly unrelated experiences to identify behaviors and patterns that have been intrinsic in the Criminal Justice System since “tough on crime” policies emerged into the early 1970’s. During this time, criminal justice and public opinion moved from a more rehabilitative stance to one of punishment and punitive vengeance on those …

Creation Of A Novel Human Wound Model To Test Novel Wound Healing Approaches, Nathan Northern Apr 2017

Creation Of A Novel Human Wound Model To Test Novel Wound Healing Approaches, Nathan Northern

The University Honors Program

In the US there is a growing prevalence of chronic wounds such as such as leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and pressure ulcers. These wounds persist for long periods of time and are expensive to manage. Improved human-based model systems that emulate the wound healing process in humans would accelerate the identification of novel healing strategies that are directly translatable to humans. The goal of this study was to develop a novel wound model able to imitate the human wound healing process. To do this, 8mm punch biopsies were taken from human abdominoplasty samples and 2mm wounds were created in …

Variables Associated With Overweight/Obesity Among African-American Women With Hypertension And/Or Diabetes, Monica A. Hamilton, Dnp, Rn, Acns-Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

BACKGROUND

Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death next to tobacco use. Although it is prevalent in all populations, it disproportionately affects AA women. Overweight/obesity increases AA women’s chances of developing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and decreases their life expectancy. The purpose of this study was to explore variables associated with overweight/obese AA women with hypertension and/or diabetes.

METHODS

A secondary data analysis was conducted using a descriptive-correlational design to analyze cross-sectional data obtained from the 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The sample consisted of AA women (n =1823). The dependent variable …

Management Strategy Evaluation For The Atlantic Surfclam (Spisula Solidissima) Using A Spatially Explicit, Vessel-Based Fisheries Model, Kelsey M. Kuykendall, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klink, Paula T. Moreno, Robert T. Leaf Apr 2017

Management Strategy Evaluation For The Atlantic Surfclam (Spisula Solidissima) Using A Spatially Explicit, Vessel-Based Fisheries Model, Kelsey M. Kuykendall, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klink, Paula T. Moreno, Robert T. Leaf

CCPO Publications

The commercially valuable Atlantic surfclam (Spisula solidissima) is harvested along the northeastern continental shelf of the United States. Its range has contracted and shifted north, driven by warmer bottom water temperatures. Declining landings per unit of effort (LPUE) in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) is one result. Declining stock abundance and LPUE suggest that overfishing may be occurring off New Jersey. A management strategy evaluation (MSE) for the Atlantic surfclam is implemented to evaluate rotating closures to enhance Atlantic surfclam productivity and increase fishery viability in the MAB. Active agents of the MSE model are individual fishing vessels with …

Thiamine Deficiency Induces Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Oxidative Stress In Human Neurons Derived From Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Xin Wang, Mei Xu, Jacqueline A. Frank, Zun-Ji Ke, Jia Luo

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency (TD) plays a major role in the etiology of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) which is a severe neurological disorder. TD induces selective neuronal cell death, neuroinflammation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress in the brain which are commonly observed in many aging-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). However, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The progress in this line of research is hindered due to the lack of appropriate in vitro models. The neurons derived for the human induced pluripotent stem …

Resuscitating The Non-Delegation Doctrine: A Compromise And An Experiment, A. J. Kritkos Apr 2017

Resuscitating The Non-Delegation Doctrine: A Compromise And An Experiment, A. J. Kritkos

Missouri Law Review

An autopsy of federal non-delegation jurisprudence reveals an interesting insight: the Supreme Court has never repudiated the theoretical underpinnings of the non-delegation doctrine or questioned its importance in maintaining the separation of powers. Instead, the Court has whittled the non-delegation doctrine down to a nub because of practical concerns with implementing it. First, the Court has stated that there is an insurmountable line-drawing problem that occurs when delineating a permissible delegation from an impermissible one. And second, the Court has asserted that the non-delegation doctrine cannot be seriously enforced in a complex, modern society without disastrous consequences. I argue that …

Effect Of Stigma And Advocacy On Our State Of Mental Health: A Scientific And Personal Approach, Hannah Giangaspro Apr 2017

Effect Of Stigma And Advocacy On Our State Of Mental Health: A Scientific And Personal Approach, Hannah Giangaspro

Senior Theses

The prevalence of mental health disorders amongst college students, especially studentathletes and honors students, has reached dangerously high levels. Furthermore, the stigma associated with mental disorders has been proven to prevent the struggling population from seeking help for themselves through mental health services. This study examined the relationship between mental health and college students (i.e. undergraduates, student-athletes, and honors students), as well as the effects of mental health advocacy on the speaker and the listener. Study participants consisted primarily of NCAA Division I undergraduate studentathletes at the University of South Carolina, with a sample size of 116. Results indicated that …

Population Dynamics Of The Cotton Rat In Southeastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Heather Green Salamone Apr 2017

Population Dynamics Of The Cotton Rat In Southeastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Heather Green Salamone

Virginia Journal of Science

We used monthly live trapping for 2.5 years to evaluate the life-history features of the most common small mammal, Sigmodon hispidus (hispid cotton rat), in an old field at its northern limit of distribution on the Atlantic Coast. Peak densities, achieved in late autumn or early winter, were among the highest recorded for the species and were more typical of geographically marginal populations rather than of central ones. Unlike some other marginal populations, hispid cotton rats in southeastern Virginia did not lose significant body mass over the winter (when few juveniles were present) and survival in winter was not significantly …

Early Head Start Home Visitor's Identification Of Risk For Maltreatment, Alayna Schreier Apr 2017

Early Head Start Home Visitor's Identification Of Risk For Maltreatment, Alayna Schreier

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Infants and toddlers enrolled in Early Head Start are at increased risk for child maltreatment due to the presence of numerous factors across a developmental-ecological framework, such as poverty, parental mental health problems, and developmental disability (e.g., Belsky, 1993; Bronfenbrenner, 1979). Within Early Head Start, home visitors are in a unique position to identify the families most likely to experience maltreatment. However, research has demonstrated that home visitors are often ill-equipped to identify and address risk factors such as parental mental health concerns, substance abuse, and domestic violence (Azzi-Lessing, 2011; Tandon, Mercer, Saylor, & Duggan, 2008). Further, little is known …

Differential Toxic Effects Of Ulva Lactuca (Chlorophyta) On The Herbivorous Gastropods, Littorina Littorea And L. Obtusata (Mollusca), Paulette Peckol, Alysha B. Putnam Apr 2017

Differential Toxic Effects Of Ulva Lactuca (Chlorophyta) On The Herbivorous Gastropods, Littorina Littorea And L. Obtusata (Mollusca), Paulette Peckol, Alysha B. Putnam

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Members of the genus Ulva are widespread and abundant in intertidal and shallow subtidal areas but there are conflicting data regarding susceptibility to herbivory. While some studies have documented that Ulva spp. were favored by a diversity of marine herbivores, other work has revealed herbivore deterrence. We investigated grazing and growth rates of the littorinid species, Littorina littorea and L. obtusata, when offered Fucus vesiculosus, Ascophyllum nodosum, Ulva lactuca, and Chondrus crispus, highlighting distinctive vulnerabilities to toxic effects of U. lactuca. Ulva lactuca was the preferred food of L. littorea, while L. obtusata showed no grazing on this ephemeral algal …

Ecological Correlates With Dioecy In The Flora Of A Tropical Premontane Wet Forest In Costa Rica., Breanne Held Apr 2017

Ecological Correlates With Dioecy In The Flora Of A Tropical Premontane Wet Forest In Costa Rica., Breanne Held

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

There is a considerable disagreement about the selective forces that have led to the evolution of dioecy (i.e., the condition of having separate male and female flowers on separate plants). Historically, selection to enforce outcrossing has been the primary explanation despite there being little empirical evidence. Hence, many scientist argue that the selection of dioecy is driven by ecological traits that influence male and female fitness and seed dispersal. The objective of this study was to examine the association between plant sexual system (particularly, dioecy) with various ecological traits for the flora of a tropical premontane wet forest in Costa …

Behavior Management, Rebecca Rappold Apr 2017

Behavior Management, Rebecca Rappold

Education Masters

Behavior management strategies are extremely influential in a successful classroom setting. Curriculum is obviously a major concern of education reform, but can students really learn the curriculum in a classroom that is not well managed? Having a classroom that is well managed allows for students to take the risks they need to in order to access new knowledge and grow as citizens of our communities. Carefully designed survey questions were distributed to multiple educators in a school of poverty to gauge the feelings of those working in the classroom on the successes and hardships of behavior management programs. Data collection …

Assessing A Punching Bag Feedback Performance Device, Neil Deochand Apr 2017

Assessing A Punching Bag Feedback Performance Device, Neil Deochand

Dissertations

Physical exercise has been integrated into treatment efforts in reversing the number of overweight and obese individuals. Furthermore, exercise extends mortality, enhances general quality of life, and it is a protective health factor for preventing the progression some mental health disorders. Electronic athletic training equipment easily allows monitoring of real-time physical activity, and enables tracking of progress made toward individualized performance goals. There are limitations to only using visual feedback (e.g., visual depictions of heart rate, speed, distance traveled, or calories burned etc.) to track and improve exercise and athletic performance, especially for some sports, such as boxing. This issue …

Effects Of Gm Disclosure Statements On Consumer Perceptions Of Selected Food Products In Survey And Sensory Panel Settings, Ellyn Margaret Newcomb Apr 2017

Effects Of Gm Disclosure Statements On Consumer Perceptions Of Selected Food Products In Survey And Sensory Panel Settings, Ellyn Margaret Newcomb

Theses and Dissertations

The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (PL 114-216) will require nearly all foods sold in the U.S. to bear a statement disclosing whether they contain genetically modified (GM) material. Past studies suggest the presence of such a statement could have profound effects on consumers; however, research comparing consumer response towards different GM-disclosure statements is scarce. PL 114-216 states that GM foods shall not be considered more or less safe than their non-bioengineered counterparts, nevertheless it would benefit regulators and food manufacturers to be aware of the possible effects such disclosures might have on consumers. In a nationwide survey, multiple disclosure …

Decellularization And Recellularization Processes For Whole Porcine Kidneys, Nafiseh Poornejad Apr 2017

Decellularization And Recellularization Processes For Whole Porcine Kidneys, Nafiseh Poornejad

Theses and Dissertations

Concern over kidney disease has increased dramatically in recent years within the medical community. It is estimated that approximately one in fifteen Americans, nearly 20 million people, experience chronic kidney disease with most of those diagnosed progressing to kidney failure. The ultimate treatment available for end stage renal failure is whole kidney transplantation. However, there are very few kidneys available for patients to receive and those patients who are fortunate enough to receive an organ must remain on immunosuppressive medication for the remainder of their lives. The United States Department of Health & Human Services have reported that 18 people …

The Board’S Responsibility For Crisis Governance, Lawrence J. Trautman Apr 2017

The Board’S Responsibility For Crisis Governance, Lawrence J. Trautman

UC Law Business Journal

A clear strategy and implementation plan for reasonably foreseeable industry disasters--- before they take place, helps to prevent mistakes made under conditions of severe stress. Survivalthreatening disasters such as the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill or natural disasters such as hurricanes, fires, or the March 11, 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami, constitute any board’s worse nightmare. I have attempted to draw upon lessons from each of these disasters and explore how they may be applied more generally across all industries when crisis strikes. While effective risk management is perhaps the topic highest on every board's agenda, it is imperative …

Effects Of Ultrasound On Amyloid Beta 42 (Aβ42) Mediated Neurodegeneration, Sarah Byrne Apr 2017

Effects Of Ultrasound On Amyloid Beta 42 (Aβ42) Mediated Neurodegeneration, Sarah Byrne

Honors Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age related progressive neurodegenerative disease. The exact mechanisms that lead to cell death are not entirely understood. It has been shown that accumulation of amyloid-beta-42 (Aβ42) plaques generated by mis-cleavage of amyloid-precursor-protein is the cause of neurodegeneration seen in AD. This is due to the hydrophobic nature of Aβ42 due to extra two amino acids added to the typical and naturally occurring Aβ40 in the body. These Aβ42 plaques trigger neuronal death because of the toxic nature and stress they exert on the neurons. In this study, Drosophila melanogaster transgenic model where human Aβ42 coding …

Stress In New Graduate Nurses: Can They Sweat It? A Correlational Study Of Exercise And Stress In New Graduate Nurses, Kathleen Helgesen

Doctoral Projects

Stress in new graduate nurses has been a known issue in nursing for decades. The number of new graduate nurse turnover rates has reached up to 50% within the first three years of practice, according to some studies. Most new graduate nurses who choose to leave their job, or even the profession, cite stress as a major factor.

Methods: Single point correlation survey of new graduate BSN students in Southern California (n=32).

Results: Initial results showed a statistically significant difference between those who exercised three to five hours per week, versus though who exercised more than five hours per week. …

Musembe School: How One School And Surrounding Community Was Transformed, Eloise Hockett, John Muhanji

Faculty Publications - College of Education

"The story of Eloise and John's work in the Muliro Village area of rural Kenya perhaps best represents all of the tenets of cultural humility in play at the same time. Eloise and John had the unique opportunity to enter into a project that had not been on their radar, nor one they had envisioned or planned for. However, God had specific plansfor one small primary school known as Musembe, and the surrounding community of Muliro Village."
