Application Of Medical Nutrition Therapy In A Classroom Setting, Carol A. Denysschen

Fostering Innovation in Teaching with Technology (FITT) Academy

Project Scope:

Students in the dietetics program need to critically apply medical nutrition therapy to patients with one or more disease conditions. This applied learning can be difficult to present in a classroom setting.

It is the intent of this project to provide all dietetics students (didactic and dietitian education), in the medical nutrition therapy I course, with critical thinking examples on application of nutrition therapy.

Primary goal:

  • Develop/Identify two clinical case studies, incorporating information and concepts learned in the course (one or two topics), that could provide summative evaluation that eliminates the issue of students finding answers online.
  • Identify …

Primary Care Of Latino Patients In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Personal Experiences In Safety-Net Healthcare Organizations, Grant Douglas Tore Dec 2017

Primary Care Of Latino Patients In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Personal Experiences In Safety-Net Healthcare Organizations, Grant Douglas Tore

Senior Theses

This thesis aims to compare two types of healthcare organizations that compose the safety-net healthcare system in the United States with the utilization of both personal experiences and extensive research. The first are community health centers, which receive federal funding in order to serve specific populations with in their communities. In my experience, this population was migrant farmworkers, all who came to the United States legally with H2A visas. The second model is that of the free medical clinic, which operates on a volunteer/staff model, but receives no government funding. Serving primarily uninsured patients, free clinics such as the Good …

Relationship Between Self-Reported Oral Health And Self-Esteem In Two Columbia, Sc Populations, Matthew Ablonczy, Elizabeth Smith Dec 2017

Relationship Between Self-Reported Oral Health And Self-Esteem In Two Columbia, Sc Populations, Matthew Ablonczy, Elizabeth Smith

Senior Theses

The importance of oral health to overall health cannot be overstated. For example, oral health can be used for early diagnosis of diseases such as diabetes. Furthermore, it has been well studied that self-esteem is related to oral health. Individuals with proper oral health care have more confidence to interact with others, which results in higher self-esteem. Those who lack the ability to pay for oral healthcare are thus at a great disadvantage. The present study sought to investigate the relationship between oral health and self-esteem in two Columbia, SC populations through surveying. There were two study populations, students at …

The Value Of Native Plants And Local Production In An Era Of Global Agriculture, Oren Shelef, Peter J. Weisberg, Frederick D. Provenza Dec 2017

The Value Of Native Plants And Local Production In An Era Of Global Agriculture, Oren Shelef, Peter J. Weisberg, Frederick D. Provenza

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

For addressing potential food shortages, a fundamental tradeoff exists between investing more resources to increasing productivity of existing crops, as opposed to increasing crop diversity by incorporating more species. We explore ways to use local plants as food resources and the potential to promote food diversity and agricultural resilience. We discuss how use of local plants and the practice of local agriculture can contribute to ongoing adaptability in times of global change. Most food crops are now produced, transported, and consumed long distances from their homelands of origin. At the same time, research and practices are directed primarily at improving …

Microctonus Pachylobii (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): New Host Record From Hylobius Radicis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), And Additional Notes On Its Biology, George D. Hoffman, Kenneth F. Raffa

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The endoparasite Microctonus pachylobii was discovered parasitizing a new weevil host, Hylobius radicis. Thirteen of the 154 H. radicis adults collected were parasitized (8.5%). The median numbers of parasites per weevil were 26 (x =22.5) during the period April through June, and 4 (x =9.4) during August and September. The median male:female sex ratio was 0.91 (x =0.65). Males emerged approximately 1 day earlier than females. Median parasite mortality while in the cocoon was 10.2% per parasitized weevil (x = 11.8%). Microctonus pachylobii was not found parasitizing two previously recorded weevil hosts from field samples, Hylobius rhizophagus and H. …

Everyone On The Same Page: District, Family And Community Collaboration, Dr. Michele F. Flowers

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

As Districts embark on the PBIS journey to reduce problem behaviors and increase adaptive, socially appropriate behaviors, buy-In from ALL major stakeholders is critical to the overall success of PBIS implementation. It is not enough to just have a few people in the school or district to buy in if a climate and society in which appropriate behavior is the norm is to be established. District, family, and community support is vital to the sustainability of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. The support of PBIS by all major stakeholders ensures the continued ability of the school to decrease office discipline …

So What?: Writing And Tutoring Intentionally, Cassidy Gummersall

Tutor's Column

In my first semester of tutoring, I have seen papers about forestry services, Rihanna as an emblem of dominance, the nutritional chemistry of an English muffin, NASA funding, and the endangered Peruvian vicugna. I have worked with students writing genres like persuasive research essays, personal narratives, lab reports, and even philosophy short-answer midterm responses. When confronted with papers that have requirements or subjects where I am far from an expert, I have learned to ask, “Why did you select this topic?” and “How would you want your audience to be changed by reading your paper?” These questions function to alleviate …

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Triggers of the autoimmune response that leads to type 1 diabetes (T1D) remain poorly understood. A possibility is that parallel changes in both T cells and target cells provoke autoimmune attack. We previously documented greater Ca2+ transients in fibroblasts from T1D subjects than non-T1D after exposure to fatty acids (FA) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). These data indicate that metabolic and signal transduction defects present in T1D can be elicited ex vivo in isolated cells. Changes that precede T1D, including inflammation, may activate atypical responses in people that are genetically predisposed to T1D. To identify such cellular differences …

Zinc Chloride Activates Phospho-Akt And Promotes Chondrocyte Maturation In The Atdc5 Chondrogenic Cell Line, Donya T. Burgess Dec 2017

Zinc Chloride Activates Phospho-Akt And Promotes Chondrocyte Maturation In The Atdc5 Chondrogenic Cell Line, Donya T. Burgess

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Fracture healing is characterized by inflammation, cartilage formation, bone deposition, and remodeling. Endochondral ossification is an important part of callus formation that relies on the maturation of chondrocytes. Early in their maturation these cells express collagen type II alpha 1 chain (COL2A1) and express collagen type X alpha 1 chain (COL10A1) as they mature further and become hypertrophic chondrocytes. Activation of the insulin pathway is considered a primary factor involved in the initiation of chondrogenesis and its progression during bone healing. Insulin mimetics like zinc chloride (ZnCl2) have been shown to improve bone healing outcomes and enhance bone …

Investigating Multiple Domains Of Household Livelihood Security: Insights From Urban Slums In Bangladesh, S Akter, S Rahman Dec 2017

Investigating Multiple Domains Of Household Livelihood Security: Insights From Urban Slums In Bangladesh, S Akter, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In this article, the authors construct indices of Household Livelihood Security (HLS) domains, namely, economic, food, health, and education securities and empowerment with data from 1,120 poor households in two urban settlements of Bangladesh. The authors then jointly identify domain-specific socioeconomic determinants employing a multivariate Tobit model. A quintile analysis of domains shows high levels of inequalities among these poor households. The HLS domains are significantly positively correlated, and a host of factors significantly influence individual HLS domain. Interventions targeted at improving education, provision of business training and building of land asset are suggested to improve livelihood security.

Community Mobilization: A Community-Wide Approach To Promoting Adolescent Sexual Health, Sam E. Greenberg, Laura Davis, Cheryl Tutt Msw, Tonya Katcher Md, Mph

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Community mobilization is a strategy that organizes a community across sectors for long-term change, and is one way for communities to provide supports for young people to make healthy sexual choices. In the context of teen pregnancy, community mobilization can address the interconnected web of factors that influence teen sexual attitudes by bringing together parents, educators, health care practitioners, young people, and other key community stakeholders to address the issue jointly. From 2014 to 2016, Advocates for Youth, through a cooperative agreement with the US Office of Adolescent Health, provided financial support and capacity-building assistance to three communities to address …
