Exploration Of Tele Mental Health Program Integration With Application Into Psychiatry Services At Ivinson Memorial Hospital Behavioral Health Unit, Beth J. Romsa
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Telehealth has initiated a transformation of the healthcare system that has been heralded by many to address the growing concern of disparity in mental healthcare (Grubaugh, Cain, Elhai, Patrick, & Frueh, 2008). Rural areas currently benefit significantly from availability and use of telemedicine services. The purpose of this capstone project was to evaluate the evidence on tele mental health guidelines; assess the hospital’s existing mental health services including processes, structure, and outcomes; and develop a clinical guideline that incorporates best evidence and outcome measurement procedures to facilitate expansion of mental health services. The capstone project consisted of two phases. Phase …
Genome Wide Association And Next Generation Sequencing Approaches To Map Determinants Of Ascites In Broiler Chickens, Shatovisha Dey
Genome Wide Association And Next Generation Sequencing Approaches To Map Determinants Of Ascites In Broiler Chickens, Shatovisha Dey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
These studies have investigated different candidate genomic regions for their contributions to ascites in broilers. Ascites syndrome is a manifestation of idiopathic pulmonary arteriole hypertension that concerns the poultry industry worldwide. Investigations have demonstrated the disease to be genetically regulated and to exhibit moderate to high heritabilities. Although previous studies have indicated a few chromosomes to be involved with ascites, no genes have been identified to date with direct links to the disease. This dissertation presents a collection of studies that determine the genomic and genetic interactions for regions on chromosome 2 and 9 for ascites phenotypes in broiler chickens. …

The Role Of Hif-1Α In Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Function In Alcoholic Liver Disease., Tuo Shao
The Role Of Hif-1Α In Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Function In Alcoholic Liver Disease., Tuo Shao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hypoxia inducible factor 1 α (HIF1α) is an oxygen-responsive subunit. HIF-1α plays a pivotal role in many pathophysiological processes. In addition to oxygen availability, HIF-1α can be regulated by multiple other factors in response to various pathophysiological processes. Previous studies showed that hepatic HIF-1α could be beneficial or harmful in experimental alcoholic liver disease (ALD). However, the role of intestinal HIF-1α in ALD has not yet been studied. Given the critical role of the gut-liver axis in ALD, it is important to elucidate the role of intestinal epithelial HIF-1α in ALD. In the first chapter, we used wide type (WT) …
Bayesian Approach On Short Time-Course Data Of Protein Phosphorylation, Casual Inference For Ordinal Outcome And Causal Analysis Of Dietary And Physical Activity In T2dm Using Nhanes Data., You Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation contains three different projects in proteomics and causal inferences. In the first project, I apply a Bayesian hierarchical model to assess the stability of phosphorylated proteins under short-time cold ischemia. This study provides inference on the stability of these phosphorylated proteins, which is valuable when using these proteins as biomarkers for a disease. in the second project, I perform a comparative study of different confounding-adjusted to estimate the treatment effect when the outcome variable is ordinal using observational data. The adjusted U-statistics method is compared with other methods such as ordinal logistic regression, propensity score based stratification and …
Clinical And Therapeutic Significance Of Obesity In Melanoma, Jennifer L. Mcquade
Clinical And Therapeutic Significance Of Obesity In Melanoma, Jennifer L. Mcquade
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
While the FDA approval of targeted and immune therapies in metastatic melanoma (MM) have dramatically improved outcomes in this disease, de novo and/or acquired resistance can limit the clinical benefit of these agents. The IGF-1/PI3K/AKT pathway has been implicated in resistance to both targeted and immune therapy. The IGF-1/PI3K/AKT pathway has also been shown to play a key role in the pathogenesis of obesity in other malignancies. To date, the impact of energy balance on clinical outcomes and therapeutic response in MM has not been studied. I hypothesized that energy balance would impact the molecular biology, behavior, and drug sensitivity …

The Need For Dietary Guidelines In Pakistan, Romaina Iqbal, Saman Tahir, Naveera Ghulamhussain
The Need For Dietary Guidelines In Pakistan, Romaina Iqbal, Saman Tahir, Naveera Ghulamhussain
Community Health Sciences
Diet is one of the most important contributors to health and disease. Developing countries such as Pakistan are facing a growing epidemic of under nutrition resulting in stunting, wasting and micronutrient deficiencies in the population. This severe situation of under nutrition in the country is coupled with rising tide of non-communicable diseases (NCD) posing the double burden of disease on the country. These burden of NCD, along with over and under nutrition poses a huge burden on the already over-utilized multi-tiered health care system in Pakistan. In this alarming situation, nutrition education in the form of food based dietary guidelines …
Msh1-Mediated Non-Genetic Phenotypic Variation In Plants: Prospects For Epigenetic Breeding In Sorghum Bicolor, Dikungwa Ketumile
Msh1-Mediated Non-Genetic Phenotypic Variation In Plants: Prospects For Epigenetic Breeding In Sorghum Bicolor, Dikungwa Ketumile
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sorghum is the fifth most important cereal crop grown in the world, and is the primary staple food for many people in developing countries. Like other major crops, its improvement is constrained by depletion of genetic diversity within breeding germplasm. Investigated in this study is the unique creation of non-genetic phenotypic variation through altering MutS Homolog1 (MSH1), a plant-specific gene, and the potential it presents for sorghum improvement. Suppression of MSH1 results in non-genetic developmental reprogramming. The derived MSH1 memory lines, when used in crossing, result in heritable phenotypic variation that enhances plant vigor and agronomic performance. A …

Analysis Of Cereal Aphid Feeding Behavior And Transcriptional Responses Underlying Switchgrass–Aphid Interactions, Kyle G. Koch
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L., is a perennial warm-season grass that is a model species for the development of bioenergy crops. However, the sustainability of switchgrass as a bioenergy feedstock will require efforts directed at improved biomass yield under a variety of stress factors. The objectives of this research were to: (1) elucidate greenbug and yellow sugarcane aphid feeding behavior on resistant and susceptible switchgrasses using electronic penetration graphs (EPG), (2) define transcriptional changes before and during insect feeding through RNA-seq to identify candidate resistance genes in a hybrid switchgrass cultivar, and (3) utilize methods in RNA sequencing of insects to …
The Effect Of Cocoa Flavanols On Β-Cell Mass And Function, Thomas John Rowley
The Effect Of Cocoa Flavanols On Β-Cell Mass And Function, Thomas John Rowley
Theses and Dissertations
A hallmark of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is β-cell dysfunction and the eventual loss of functional β-cell mass. Therefore, mechanisms that improve or preserve β-cell function could be used to improve the quality of life of individuals with T2D. Studies have shown that monomeric, oligomeric and polymeric cocoa flavanols have different effects on obesity, insulin resistance and glucose tolerance. We hypothesized that these cocoa flavanols may have beneficial effects on β-cell function. INS-1 832/13 derived β-cells and primary rat islets cultured with a monomeric catechin-rich cocoa flavanol fraction demonstrated enhanced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, while cells cultured with total cocoa extract, …
Pregnancy Medicaid Expansions And Fertility: Differentiating Between The Intensive And Extensive Margins, Lincoln H. Groves, Sarah Hamersma, Leonard M. Lopoo
Pregnancy Medicaid Expansions And Fertility: Differentiating Between The Intensive And Extensive Margins, Lincoln H. Groves, Sarah Hamersma, Leonard M. Lopoo
Center for Policy Research
The theoretical and empirical links between public health insurance access and fertility in the United States remain unclear. Utilizing a demographic cell-based estimation approach with panel data (1987-1997), we revisit the large-scale Medicaid expansions to pregnant women during the 1980s to estimate the heterogeneous impacts of public health insurance access on childbirth. While the decision to become a parent (i.e., the extensive margin) appears to be unaffected by increased access to Medicaid, we find that increased access to public health insurance positively influenced the number of high parity births (i.e., the intensive margin) for select groups of women. In particular, …

The Effect Of Hyperthermic Whole Body Heat Stimulus (Sauna) On Heat Shock Protein 70 And Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy In Young Males During Weight Training, Brandon C. Jones Mr.
All NMU Master's Theses
The traditional Finnish steam sauna is theorized to aid skeletal muscle hypertrophy by stimulating Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70), which acts as a molecular chaperone to the folding of functional skeletal muscle. The aim of this study was to investigate if stimulating HSP70 by using a sauna (45 – 50 ͦC, 80% Humidity) three times per week, for 15 minutes, could aid skeletal muscle hypertrophy during six weeks of resistance training in a young (21.38 ± 1.9 yrs.), recreationally trained male population. Thirteen subjects were randomly distributed into 3 groups [resistance Training + sauna (RT+S, n=5), RT + Relaxation (RT+R, …

Go For A Walk! Monitoring Walking For Depressed Mood, Michael E. Shrake
All NMU Master's Theses
Literature suggests that exercise has benefits for health and mood. For people suffering from depression however, even summoning motivation to go for a walk can seem impossible, no matter the alleged benefits. My study builds on current articles suggesting that wearable technology like activity-tracking bracelets can have significant effects on motivation and physical health goals. The current study followed 11 individuals who met the minimum threshold for depression as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for a period of 28 days and tracked their walking using a Jawbone UP activity bracelet. The results showed that daily activity differed significantly …

Comparison Of Aquaponics And Hydroponics On Basil (Ocimum Basilicum) Morphometrics And Essential Oil Composition, Lauren E. Wilson, Nathan C. Duncan, D. Andrew Crain
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Soilless farming, though in practice for over two millennia, is becoming more prevalent in modern food production as it not only saves water and space but also provides an effective option for indoor urban farming. There are currently two major models of soilless farming—hydroponics and aquaponics. While both systems are effective methods, very few studies compare the two systems. The objective of this study was to compare the water quality, basil (Ocimum basilicum) productivity, and basil essential oil profiles from plants grown in a hydroponic and newly established aquaponic system. Basil plants from two age groups (young plants …

Unpolished Emeralds In The Gem State: Hard-Rock Mining, Labor Unions, And Irish Nationalism In The Mountain West And Idaho, 1850-1900, Victor D. Higgins
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Irish immigration to the United States, extant since the 1600s, exponentially increased during the Irish Great Famine of 1845-52. For many Catholic Irish, the legacy of colonization and the Famine intensified an existing narrative of forced exile and dispossession. It also endowed them with a predisposition to identify similarities between colonial exploitation and capitalism. These factors fed a growing Irish nationalism on both sides of the Atlantic, protean in the 1700s, which reified in the 1800s, around Anglophobia. In the Mountain West where mining spearheaded exploration and settlement, the Irish made up the largest ethnic group in hard-rock mines in …

Treatments For Opioid Use Disorder Among Pregnant And Reproductive-Aged Women., Dennis J. Hand, Vanessa L. Short, Diane J. Abatemarco
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers
The increased prevalence of opioid use disorder and access to medical insurance is subsequently increasing the likelihood that medical professionals will encounter individuals with opioid use disorder. Sharp increases in opioid use disorder among women mean that obstetricians, gynecologists, and other reproductive medicine providers may be especially likely to encounter such patients. Medical professionals' understanding of treatment for opioid use disorder and their roles in their patients' treatment may increase referrals to treatment, reduce stigma, and improve the quality of medical care. Treatment for opioid use disorder falls into four overlapping domains: medication management, medical care, behavioral/mental health care, and …

Best Practices For Differentiated Learning Among Third Through Fifth Grade Ell Students, Tara J. Macias
Masters Theses
With the increase of second language English learners in U.S. kindergarten through twelfth grade schools and the continued achievement gap between these students and English speaking students, educators and administrators need to develop, implement and support best practices for differentiation among English Language Learners. ELL students are often categorized as special education students while their only barrier to learning is language acquisition. On the other hand, ELL students may have additional learning difficulties that are not identified because there is an assumption that language acquisition is the single challenge to their learning. Educators often engage in whole group instruction with …

Development Of Lower Rio Grande River Water Quality Transportation Numerical Model For Bi-National River Management, Jose O. Gonzalez
Development Of Lower Rio Grande River Water Quality Transportation Numerical Model For Bi-National River Management, Jose O. Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, water quality modelling has focused on modelling individual water bodies. However, water quality management problems must be analyzed at the larger scale to include influences from various water bodies that are interconnected. This paper provides a study on the hydrologic and quality transportation calculation by developing a hydrodynamic (unsteady state) channel routing model using a water-balanced approach. A one dimension Lagrangian river model was developed and applied to the 210 plus miles for the lower Rio Grande River Basin from the Falcon Dam to the head water of Brownsville that pours onto the Gulf of Mexico. This model can …

Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to identify differences in teacher perceptions of benefits, challenges, and preferences to different School Breakfast Program (SBP) service models. A survey instrument was developed, pilot tested, and then distributed electronically to K-12 teachers throughout the state of Utah, who were part of the Utah Education Association. Demographics and factors influencing SBP models in Utah were gathered. Frequencies and ANOVA tests were performed and a significance level of <0.01 was chosen to protect for multiple comparisons. Results indicated that traditional breakfast was the most preferred model with a mean score of 2.80 and breakfast in the classroom was the least preferred model by teachers with a mean of -1.32. Children not going hungry was identified as the greatest benefit (95.4%, n=352) to SBP and food waste was identified as the greatest challenge (45.8%, n=168). This study concluded that increased awareness and education amongst teachers regarding different models of SBP service could lead to increased efficiency, increased participation in SBP, decreased costs, decreased food waste, and increased academic performance and health benefits for students.
The Relationship Between Microbiota, Diet, And Energy Production In The Alpaca, Courtney Carroll
The Relationship Between Microbiota, Diet, And Energy Production In The Alpaca, Courtney Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
The alpaca is a small South American camelid (SAC) that is an important production animal in Peru, especially among the highly impoverished communities of the high Andes, and raised for its fiber and meat. Alpacas are highly reliant on the microbes within their digestive tracts to digest the plant material they consume; volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are released as a byproduct of this microbial fermentation and used as a major source of energy by the alpaca. To explore optimal parameters for alpaca microbiome analysis, performed 16S rRNA gene surveys on alpaca C1 and fecal samples that had been extracted using …
Characterization Of Filifactor Alocis And Its Immune Evasion Strategies Employed Against Human Neutrophils., Cortney Linn Armstrong
Characterization Of Filifactor Alocis And Its Immune Evasion Strategies Employed Against Human Neutrophils., Cortney Linn Armstrong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Periodontal disease is among the most common of inflammatory conditions and is caused by bacterial and host derived factors. The presence of bacteria drives the recruitment of neutrophils, professional phagocytes, to migrate to specific oral sites where they produce potent antimicrobials to kill their target. However, this inflammation and production of antimicrobials must be strictly regulated to minimize collateral host tissue damage. Human neutrophils recognized the oral pathogen Filifactor alocis through Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and upon binding, activated both p38 MAPK and ERK signaling pathways, known to be involved in neutrophil cell migration and degranulation. F. alocis also stimulated …
