Antioxidant Trace Elements And Oxidative Stress Status In Dairy Cattle Suffering From Mastitis, Medhat Nassif, Hussam Ibrahim, Heba Moharam

Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal

Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary glands caused by several pathogens. Reactive oxygen species are natural end products of the intensive cellular metabolism. Oxidative stress occurs when there is a disturbance of homeostasis causing inflammation of the mammary gland. This study was performed to evaluate blood antioxidant profile and trace elements in dairy cows with clinical mastitis. For this aim, venous blood samples were collected from 116 cows (100 mastitic, 16 control). In cows with clinical mastitis, there was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the clinical index score compared with control group. Biochemically, there was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in super oxide dismutase, catalase and total antioxidant capacity as well as in the level of zinc. However, there was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the levels of malondialdehyde and glutathione reductase as well as in that of copper. The results of the current study indicate that the body antioxidant defense system was compromised in dairy cows with clinical mastitis creating a state of oxidative stress.

The Dynamics Of Plasma Membrane, Metabolism And Respiration (Pm-M-R) In Penicillium Ochrochloron Cbs 123824 In Response To Different Nutrient Limitations—A Multi-Level Approach To Study Organic Acid Excretion In Filamentous Fungi, P Vrabl, Cw Schinagl, Dj Artmann, A Krüger, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Filamentous fungi are important cell factories. In contrast, we do not understand well even basic physiological behavior in these organisms. This includes the widespread phenomenon of organic acid excretion. One strong hurdle to fully exploit the metabolic capacity of these organisms is the enormous, highly environment sensitive phenotypic plasticity. In this work we explored organic acid excretion in Penicillium ochrochloron from a new point of view by simultaneously investigating three essential metabolic levels: the plasma membrane H+-ATPase (PM); energy metabolism, in particular adenine and pyridine nucleotides (M); and respiration, in particular the alternative oxidase (R). This was done in strictly …

Serum Protein Analysis As An Immune Assessment Tool In South Florida Nurse Sharks, Ginglymostoma Cirratum, Leila Atallahbenson

Open Access Theses

Assessment of shark health can provide valuable insight into overall population health. In this study, immunological assessment tools are reviewed for their use with wild shark populations. Nurse sharks, Ginglymostoma cirratum, were non-lethally blood sampled from wild individuals in south Florida. Reference ranges are given for the first time for serum protein electrophoresis, which included five fractions that correspond closely with other elasmobranch species. Differences between serum and plasma may be negligible for protein electrophoresis, and therefore, plasma may be preferred in field settings. Reference ranges for other biometric and blood parameters were also established. The granulocyte to lymphocyte …

Evaluation Of Animal-Based Indicators To Be Used In A Welfare Assessment Protocol For Sheep, Susan E. Richmond, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Ina Beltran De Heredia, Roberto Ruiz, Elisabetta Canali, Cathy M. Dwyer Dec 2017

Dwyer

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Sheep are managed under a variety of different environments (continually outdoors, partially outdoors with seasonal or diurnal variation, continuously indoors) and for different purposes, which makes assessing welfare challenging. This diversity means that resource-based indicators are not particularly useful and, thus, a welfare assessment scheme for sheep, focusing on animal-based indicators, was developed. We focus specifically on ewes, as the most numerous group of sheep present on farm, although many of the indicators may also have relevance to adult male sheep. Using the Welfare Quality® framework of four Principles and 12 Criteria, we considered the validity, reliability, and feasibility of …

Do Neonatal Nurses Caring For Newborns With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (Nas) Whose Mothers Used Illicit Substances During Pregnancy Experience Moral Distress? A Pilot Study, Valarie Artigas

Doctoral Dissertations

Maternal substance misuse/abuse during pregnancy may lead to adverse neonatal outcomes, including neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). NAS is a constellation of withdrawal symptoms exhibited in newborns in response to the discontinuance of in-utero exposure to licit and illicit substances. The incidence of NAS is directly related to the increasing rates of maternal substance use/abuse. The United States has experienced a five-fold increase of newborns born with NAS. The care of the newborn with NAS is one of the most challenging conditions for the neonatal nurse. Management of newborns with NAS requires knowledge that has not been traditionally partnered within care …

A Study On Organic Tomatoes: Effect Of A Biostimulator On Phytochemical And Antioxidant Activities, Varinder Sidhu, Dilip Nandwani, Li Wang, Ying Wu

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

The objective of the present study is to investigate nutritional and antioxidant activity of four types of organic tomato cultivars. The differences in tomato quality are also tested between groups with or without treatment using an organic biostimulator, Stimplex. Total phenolic compounds (TPC), lycopene, 𝛽-carotene, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and color parameters were investigated in the current study. The results showed that there was no significant difference in TPC among cultivars regardless of Stimplex treatment. Higher lycopene and 𝛽-carotene were obtained in Stimplex treated tomatoes. Lycopene and -carotene contents were significantly different among cultivars (𝑃<0.05). DPPH scavenging activity in controlled group was significantly higher than that in the Stimplex treated tomatoes (𝑃<0.05). No significant difference in reducing power was detected among cultivars treatment groups. The study showed that the darker the tomato color, the higher the lycopene and 𝛽-carotene contents and the stronger the reducing power.

Expression And Role Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone 2 And Its Receptor In Mammals, Amy Desaulniers, Rebecca A. Cederberg, Clay A. Lents, Brett R. White Dec 2017

Expression And Role Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone 2 And Its Receptor In Mammals, Amy Desaulniers, Rebecca A. Cederberg, Clay A. Lents, Brett R. White

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1) and its receptor (GnRHR1) drive mammalian reproduction via regulation of the gonadotropins. Yet, a second form of GnRH (GnRH2) and its receptor (GnRHR2) also exist in mammals. GnRH2 has been completely conserved throughout 500 million years of evolution, signifying high selection pressure and a critical biological role. However, the GnRH2 gene is absent (e.g., rat) or inactivated (e.g., cow and sheep) in some species but retained in others (e.g., human, horse, and pig). Likewise, many species (e.g., human, chimpanzee, cow, and sheep) retain the GnRHR2 gene but lack the appropriate coding sequence to produce a full-length …

Dialogues On Ethical Vegetarianism, Michael Huemer

Between the Species

Two philosophy students, M and V, discuss the ethics of meat consumption. Standard arguments on both sides are reviewed, with emphasis on the argument that meat-consumption is wrong because it supports extreme cruelty. M and V also address such questions as how conflicting intuitions ought to be weighed, whether meat-eating is comparable to participating in a holocaust, why ethical arguments often fail to change our behavior even when they change our beliefs, and how an ethical vegetarian morally ought to interact with non-vegetarians.
