(Diptera: Culicidae: Culicinae) As Prey, Justine Bennette H. Millado, Augusto C. Sumalde, Loinda R. Baldrias, Jessamyn R. Adorada, Barbara L. Caoili

Journal Article

A local population of Toxorhynchites splendens (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Culicidae: Toxorhynchitinae) from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), University of the Philippines Los Banos, was observed under laboratory conditions to gather basic data on its biology. Immature stages are briefly described highlighting key characters that differentiate larval instars. Egg incubation and developmental period were shorter in males (1.77 ± 0.35, 36.16 ± 15.57) than in females (1.87 ± 0.26, 38.30 ± 16.23). Males also live shorter (12.9 ± 10.44) than females (18.38 ± 14.76). The number of preys, Aedes aegypti larvae, offered to T. splendens larvae was positively correlated …

Molecular Marker-Based Detection Of Primary Bacterial Endosymbiont Associated With The Coconut Scale Insects, Aspidiotus Destructor Signoret And Aspidiotus Rigidus Reyne (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), Jillian E. Timple, Romnick A. Latina, Barbara L. Caoili

Journal Article

The primary endosymbionts associated with coconut scale insects (CSI), Aspidiotus rigidus and A. destructor, were detected using the 16S rRNA. Sequences of this gene were sourced from A. destructor and A. rigidus populations from different geographical locations namely, Orani, Bataan; Cagbalate 1 and Cagbalete 2, Mauban, Quezon; Sampaloc, Quezon; and Tranca, Bay, Laguna. Results revealed variation between the primary endosymbiont associated with the Aspidiotus species, but not among the primary endosymbionts associated within each CSI species. GenBank mining using BLAST revealed 98% to 99% similarity of the endosymbionts of A. destructor and A. rigidus, respectively, with Candidatus Uzinura diaspidicola (GenBank …

What’S Food Got To Do With It?: The Host Mother’S Role In The Cultural Education Of Students Studying Abroad In The Rabat Medina, Isabel Bonhomme

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The dynamic between studentsstudying abroad and the host families with whom they stay is significant to both the study abroad experience and the way people in receiving countries view those fromthe West. Through my research, my goal was to explore and reachafundamental comprehension of this global dynamic from the Moroccan perspective.Specifically, the purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the process of cultural exchange and absorption which occurs through the use of food. I draw conclusions from information attained through formal interviews of mothers who host American students studying abroad in Rabat, and supplement this with …

Using Student Gpa To Show The “Nutritional Value” Of A Library Service, Mitchell Scott

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

Students can interact, or not interact, with their campus library in a variety of ways and through a variety of services—circulation, interlibrary loan, instruction, using our physical spaces, accessing electronic materials, to name a few. Comparing the GPA of library users to non-users is a valuable assessment strategy for demonstrating the value-added impact or “nutritional value” of library services on our users

Opportunities And Challenges For Self-Monitoring Technologies For Healthy Aging: An In-Situ Study, Mirana Randriambelonoro, Yu Chen, Onur Yuruten, Pearl Pu

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

The current need to adopt a healthy lifestyle opens the way for researchers to investigate the efficiency of using technology to motivate a change towards such behavior. Senior people’s technology adoption barriers have been largely investigated in previous research but remain unclear to design efficient solution to promote behavior change in the long term. In this paper, we present the findings of an experiment with 20 older adults using pervasive sensors for 6 weeks at their homes. In particular, we present their attitudes for physical activities and self-monitoring technologies before and after the actual usage. We then discuss the opportunities …

A Pilot Study On The Effects Of Curcumin On Parasites, Inflammation, And Opportunistic Bacteria In Riding Horses, Samantha Wuest, Rebecca Lynn Atkinson, Stephanie D. Bland, Darcie Hastings

Peer-reviewed Articles

Twelve riding horses were utilized to examine the effects of curcumin on intestinal parasites, inflammation, and the fecal shedding of Streptococcus bovis/equinus complex (SBEC), Clostridium difficile and Clostridium perfringens. Known for having anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiparasitic properties it was hypothesized that curcumin would decrease parasite shedding, inflammation, and opportunistic bacteria found in the GIT of riding horses. Horses were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments (n = 6/treatment): 1) no curcumin, control (CON); or 2) 15 g of 95% pure curcumin, (CUR). Curcumin was dosed per day for 30 d. Fecal samples were evaluated for shedding of …

Divergent Responses In Growth And Nutritional Quality Of Coastal Macroalgae To The Combination Of Increased Pco2 And Nutrients, Gordon T. Ober, Carol S. Thornber Oct 2017

Divergent Responses In Growth And Nutritional Quality Of Coastal Macroalgae To The Combination Of Increased Pco2 And Nutrients, Gordon T. Ober, Carol S. Thornber

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Coastal ecosystems are subjected to global and local environmental stressors, including increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) (and subsequent ocean acidification) and nutrient loading. Here, we tested how two common macroalgal species in the Northwest Atlantic (Ulva spp. and Fucus vesiculosus Linneaus) respond to the combination of increased CO2 and nutrient loading. We utilized two levels of pCO2 with two levels of nutrients in a full factorial design, testing the growth rates and tissue quality of Ulva and Fucus grown for 21 days in monoculture and biculture. We found that the opportunistic, fast-growing Ulva exhibited increased …

A Lens With Multiple Perspectives: The Transformative Power Of Higher Education In Health Promotion, Alicia C. Stapp, Melinda W. Valliant, M. Allison Ford, Kristen A. Swain

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic conditions represent the largest risk to America’s health (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). Approximately 50% of adults are affected by at least one chronic disease and 25% of adults are affected by more than two (CDC, 2013). As this health crisis expands, those who have the power to create change must utilize it to their highest capacity. While the complexities of the current state of health are challenging, higher education provides a powerful platform wherein those intricacies can be fully examined and resolutions sought through multiple lenses. …

Not So Neet: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Ontario's Youth Job Connection Program, Lindy Bancroft Oct 2017

Not So Neet: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Ontario's Youth Job Connection Program, Lindy Bancroft

Social Justice and Community Engagement

The Ontario government has identified youth unemployment as a central societal problem that it seeks to address through policy measures. It has recently switched its focus from assisting all youth towards assisting NEET youth (neither in employment, education or training), as is demonstrated in the current youth employment policy Youth Job Connection (YJC), which began in the fall of 2015. This MRP situates YJC as part of a broader trend away from designing youth policy as an explicit form of social control to a seemingly more positive approach of youth development. Using this example, it showcases the continuities between the …

After The Flood: Fish Farming And Climate Change Adaptation In Chitwan, Nepal, Signe Stroming

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Last summer, Nepal’s Terai region experienced some of the worst flooding in recent memory. Climate change is expected to increase the number of natural disasters that Nepal experiences in coming years, and more vulnerable demographics will be more adversely affected. Fish farming is a highly profitable and slowly growing industry based primarily in the Terai, that many believe is less vulnerable to climate-related risks than conventional forms of agriculture, and thus a possible livelihood adaptation strategy. In this study, I conducted semi-structured interviews with ten farmers in Madi, Chitwan, to understand the daily challenges and threats to fish farming, the …

When Knowledge Flows: A Case Study Of Village Health Workers’ Motivations In Jamkhed, Selaem Hadera

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Across the field of global health, there have been many attempts to cater to the health needs of the most marginalized populations. Community health workers (CHWs) are individuals that live in the communities they serve and are typically low-‐income women with little to no formal education. After a period of training by their program, they enter their communities equipped as a bridge between the community and the health system. Although CHWs do play a substantial role in health delivery and education, the structure of CHW programs varies widely, but a common characteristic of these programs is that the CHWs are …

Estimating The Impact Of Capability Factors On College Student Debt Levels Utilizing The Generalized Sustainable Capability Framework, Louis Joseph Zabaneh Oct 2017

Estimating The Impact Of Capability Factors On College Student Debt Levels Utilizing The Generalized Sustainable Capability Framework, Louis Joseph Zabaneh

Dissertations

The current unprecedented level of college student debt in the United States at over $1.4 trillion (Federal Reserve, 2017) is of major concern for all who desire to improve higher education, income and social inequality, and the general welfare of society. This study’s purpose is both theoretical and empirical: first, to develop and propose the Generalized Sustainable Capability Framework (GSCF) as a conceptual model to analyze human development; and second, to test four specific hypotheses. The hypotheses were: 1) Students with lower test scores will incur higher levels of debt; 2) Minority students will incur higher levels of debt; 3) …
