Through recent and documented observations, interviews, and assessments, it has been determined that many educational institutions are in need of intervention in regards to four specific areas, particularly as related to its school leadership team and instructional staff. Proper interventions are needed for institutions to reach their fullest potential and ultimately provide students with the most effective and engaging school experience possible. There are specific challenges related to the ability to effectively make sound decisions, particularly when encountering stressful circumstances that often exist within a complex school environment. This lack of effective decision-making has contributed to shortcomings in the way …

An Update On The Sociomicrobiology Of Quorum Sensing In Gram-Negative Biofilm Development, Daniel Passos Da Silva, Melissa C. Schofield, Matthew R. Parsek, Boo Shan Tseng

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Bacteria are social creatures that are able to interact and coordinate behaviors with each other in a multitude of ways. The study of such group behaviors in microbes was coined “sociomicrobiology” in 2005. Two such group behaviors in bacteria are quorum sensing (QS) and biofilm formation. At a very basic level, QS is the ability to sense bacterial density via cell-to-cell signaling using self-produced signals called autoinducers, and biofilms are aggregates of cells that are attached to one another via a self-produced, extracellular matrix. Since cells in biofilm aggregates are in close proximity, biofilms represent an ecologically relevant environment for …

Open Access Week Seeks To Address “Textbook Crisis”, Gauri Mangala

Open Access Week at Gettysburg College

Jay Hauser ‘19 spent $391.43 for a single course’s materials during his first semester at Gettysburg College.

“I had a class where we read classical text of [political] philosophy. But only sections of each text. But we had to buy the books. No one ever tried to bring in open source online copies of them and the professor did not provide them. Instead we spent a lot of money on like twentyish books and only used parts of them.”

In fact, a 2016 analysis conducted by College Board found that the price of books and supplies for a full-time student …

Urban Foraging: A Ubiquitous Human Practice Overlooked By Urban Planners, Policy, And Research, Charlie M. Shackleton, Patrick T. Hurley, Annika C. Dahlberg, Marla R. Emery, Harini Nagendra

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Although hardly noticed or formally recognized, urban foraging by humans probably occurs in all urban settings around the world. We draw from research in India, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States to demonstrate the ubiquity and varied nature of urban foraging in different contexts. Across these different contexts, we distill seven themes that characterize and thereby advance thinking about research and the understanding of urban foraging. We show that it is widespread and occurs across a variety of urban spaces and places. The species used and the local practices vary between contexts, and are in constant flux as urban …

Hedonic Pricing Of Chocolate Quality Characteristics: Is There A Difference For Fruit Or Nut Chocolate?, Willie B. Bedell, Michael R. Reed Oct 2017

Hedonic Pricing Of Chocolate Quality Characteristics: Is There A Difference For Fruit Or Nut Chocolate?, Willie B. Bedell, Michael R. Reed

Agricultural Economics Presentations

Chocolate campaigns in the United States have focused on the production of premier quality and healthy blend chocolate bars. We expect that merchandising efforts will offer a higher price for fruit or nut blend chocolates. Using online retail data from Amazon, eBay, and Walmart, we applied the hedonic function to estimate retailers offer price for a blended bar. The findings show that online retailers have mixed offer prices for a blend or plain bar. The paper suggests that studies would learn much more from a data and analysis that control for quantity sold and time effects in the chocolate market.

Answering Food Insecurity: Serving The Community With Food And Knowledge Using Technology, Courtney Simpson

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

The courses of Tech120, CGT110, and ENGT 180/181 and Red Gold at Purdue collaborated to design a robot that would plant and water a garden for a local community charter school. The students centered the project on the users’ needs for fresh food, nutrition education, and early exposure to STEM for children. The school, Anderson Preparatory Academy (APA), is comprised of many children who come from low-income families and are in the free or reduced lunch program. Inspired from “Farm Bot,” a similar system that allows for almost hands-free gardening, the “Boiler Bot” is designed to be scalable so children …

Hunger Doesn’T Take A Spring Break: Addressing Childhood Hunger Through Service-Learning, Jessica Isaacs Oct 2017

Hunger Doesn’T Take A Spring Break: Addressing Childhood Hunger Through Service-Learning, Jessica Isaacs

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

The rate of food insecurity among Hoosier children is slightly above the national average. For many of these children, school lunches are their primary source of nutrition. During school breaks, these children are at risk of going hungry. The Purdue Nutrition Society partnered with Glen Acres Elementary School in Lafayette, Indiana, a school where, in 2016, 72.6% of students qualified for free or reduced lunches. Through the school, 20 students from low-income families were identified and chosen to receive food care packages over their spring break. These packages were delivered to the students’ homes, and they consisted of a minimum …

Notes On Shifting Distribution Patterns And Survival Of Immature Danaus Plexippus (Lepidoptera: Danaidae) On The Food Plant Asclepias Syriaca, Susan Sullivan Borkin Oct 2017

Notes On Shifting Distribution Patterns And Survival Of Immature Danaus Plexippus (Lepidoptera: Danaidae) On The Food Plant Asclepias Syriaca, Susan Sullivan Borkin

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Abundance and distribution of immature stages of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus, on the food plant Asclepias syriaca were examined at a site in southeastern Wisconsin over one growing season. Estimated mortality for eggs and larvae was substantial (88%). Dispersal of larvae between individual food plants, along with egg and larval mortality factors, may result in low population density. Although the mechanism triggering larval dispersal is unknown, several alternative hypotheses are proposed for further examination.

Annotated Bibliography Of The Ambrosia Beetle Xylosandrus Germanus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), B. C. Weber, J. E. Mcpherson

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) (= Xyleborus germanus) is an ambrosia beetle that is found in Japan, Korea, the KurU Islands, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, central Europe, and the Cnited States (Nobuchi 1981). It attacks apparently healthy plants and those that are dying or recently dead (Weber 1982). Kaneko (1967) reported X. germanus to be a serious pest on tea (Thea sp.) plants in Japan, and Heidenreich (1%0) reported it on oak (Quercus sp.) trees in Gennany. This beetle seems to be increasing in economic importance on black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and other hardwood species in the U.S. …

Impact Of The Redheaded Pine Sawfly (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) On Young Red Pine Plantations, Robert D. Averill, Louis F. Wilson, Richard F. Fowler Oct 2017

Impact Of The Redheaded Pine Sawfly (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) On Young Red Pine Plantations, Robert D. Averill, Louis F. Wilson, Richard F. Fowler

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The ecology of the redheaded pine sawfly was studied relative to its impact on red pine plantations. An ecological model, which formed the basis for socioeconomic analysis, was constructed. Because the sawfly prefers trees under moisture stress, damage is most severe in stands growing on sand blows, where there is competition for moisture from bracken fern and hardwoods, and where soils are too moist, too shallow, or too compacted. Outbreaks also appear to be related to dry years. The sawfly has a variable impact on multiple-use values. Because it injures the least productive trees in a stand, timber is only …

Foodplant Suitabilities And A New Oviposition Record For Papilio Glaucus Canadensis (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) In Northern Wisconsin And Michigan, J. M. Scriber, G. L. Lintereur, M. H. Evans

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus L., is polyphagous, and has been reported to feed upon plant species of at least 13 families (Scudder 1889, Teitz 1972). The Canadian subspecies, P. glaucus canadensis Rothschild and Jordan, is generally believed to be univoltine, to be devoid of the genetic capacity for dark morph females, and to have morphologically distinct characteristics from the southern subspecies, P. glaucus glaucus L.

Deletion Of The Nr4a Nuclear Receptor Nor1 In Hematopoietic Stem Cells Reduces Inflammation But Not Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Formation, Hua Qing, Karrie L. Jones, Elizabeth B. Heywood, Hong Lu, Alan Daugherty, Dennis Bruemmer

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The NR4A3 orphan nuclear hormone receptor, NOR1, functions as a constitutively active transcription factor to regulate inflammation, proliferation, and cell survival during pathological vascular remodeling. Inflammatory processes represent key mechanisms leading to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation. However, a role of NOR1 in AAA formation has not been investigated previously.

Methods: Inflammatory gene expression was analyzed in bone marrow-derived macrophages isolated from NOR1-deficient mice. Low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (LDLr−/−) mice were irradiated and reconstituted with hematopoietic stem cells obtained from NOR1−/− or wild-type littermate mice. Animals were infused with angiotensin II and fed a diet enriched in saturated …

Toddler Sleep Problems, Co-Sleeping, And Maternal Sleep And Mental Health, Lauren Bentley, Bridget Armstrong, Maureen M. Black

Biennial Convention (CONV)

A moderated mediation analysis was conducted to examine relations between toddler/maternal sleep, including co-sleeping practices, and maternal mental health, in mothers of low-income toddlers. Results indicated that among co-sleeping families, the relation between toddler sleep problems and maternal mental health may be explained by shortened maternal nighttime sleep.
