Effects Of Ascorbic Acid Deficiencies On Larvae Of Lymantria Dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), Richard L. Lindroth, Anthony P. Weiss
Effects Of Ascorbic Acid Deficiencies On Larvae Of Lymantria Dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), Richard L. Lindroth, Anthony P. Weiss
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We assessed the effects of ascorbic acid and total vitamin deficiencies on growth, food processing efficiencies and survival of larval gypsy moths. Artificial diet lacking ascorbic acid did not alter performance of fourth instars, whereas diet lacking a total vitamin mix margmally reduced growth. All vita- min deficient diets substantially reduced survival of fourth-fifth instars. Mortality occurred primarily during molting periods. providing further evidence of the putative role of ascorbic acid in cuticle formation.

Feeding Patterns And Attachment Ability Of Altica Subplicata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) On Sand-Dune Willow, Aron J. Gannon, Catherine E. Bach, Glenn K. Walker
Feeding Patterns And Attachment Ability Of Altica Subplicata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) On Sand-Dune Willow, Aron J. Gannon, Catherine E. Bach, Glenn K. Walker
The Great Lakes Entomologist
To investigate feeding patterns of a specialist herbivore, Altica subplicata, larvae and adults were caged separately on host plants, Salix cordata, and leaf damage was estimated. Young, relatively more pubescent leaves near the tops of the shoots were consumed more than older leaves. Larvae clearly preferred the young, pubescent leaves and avoided the oldest leaves. Adults showed a stronger preference for the first five young leaves, but amount of consumption did not differ among the older leaves.
Attachment ability on smooth and pubescent leaves was examined as a possible factor influencing feeding patterns. Scanning electron microscopy of tarsal …
Diapause Dynamics And Host Plant Utilization Of Colias Philodice, Colias Interior And Their Hybrids (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), David N. Karowe
Diapause Dynamics And Host Plant Utilization Of Colias Philodice, Colias Interior And Their Hybrids (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), David N. Karowe
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Abnormal diapause dynamics and, to a lesser extent, reduced efficiency of host utilization by hybrid larvae constitute potential post-zygotic barriers to gene flow between a multivoltine legume-feeder, Colias philodice (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) and a univoltine Vaccinium-feeder, C. interior. At the time when C. interior larvae enter diapause, approximately 50% of hybrid larvae ceased feeding but did not enter diapause, and subsequently starved. Hybrid larvae readily accepted the host plants of both parental species. However, relative to C. philodice, hybrid larvae displayed a significantly reduced fifth instar relative growth rate (RGR) when fed the primary legume host, Medicago sativa. …

Not Only A Pipeline: Schools As Carceral Sites, Connie Wun
Not Only A Pipeline: Schools As Carceral Sites, Connie Wun
Occasional Paper Series
Conversations surrounding school discipline have largely focused on the ways that schools and their punitive policies have funneled students into the criminal justice system through the school to prison pipeline. Recently, there has been an increase in scholarship from scholars who argue that schools are not only funneling students into prisons, but that schools and prisons operate as a nexus – the two working symbiotically to discipline and punish students of color, predominantly Black male students (Meiners, 2010; Sojoyner, 2013). Drawing from these analyses, I argue that schools are characterized by multi-layered disciplinary landscapes that operate as carceral sites onto …

Method: The total joint replacement discharge education materials were revised to address the common causes of readmissions. The documents were reformatted to improve literacy level, readability, and patient learning. Nurses were educated …
Seasonal Resource Selection And Habitat Treatment Use By A Fringe Population Of Greater Sage-Grouse, Rhett Boswell
Seasonal Resource Selection And Habitat Treatment Use By A Fringe Population Of Greater Sage-Grouse, Rhett Boswell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Movement and habitat selection by Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus uropasianus) is of great interest to wildlife managers tasked with applying conservation measures for this iconic western species. Current technology has created small and lightweight GPS (Global Positioning Systems) transmitters that can be attached to sage-grouse. Using GIS software and statistical programs such as Program R, land managers can analyze GPS location data to assess how sage-grouse are geospatially interacting with their habitats. Within the Panguitch Sage-Grouse Management Area (SGMA) thousands of acres of land have been restored or manipulated to enhance sage-grouse habitat; this usually involves removal of pinyon pine …
An Evidence-Based Implementation Project On High Utilizers In The Emergency Department, Bernadette Martin Ruggles
An Evidence-Based Implementation Project On High Utilizers In The Emergency Department, Bernadette Martin Ruggles
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Challenges have been presented to the Emergency Department (ED) over the last several years as the dramatic rise in health insurance enrollment continues. Although, with the Republican bill, the American Health Care Act, changes to Medicaid may alter the health program leaving many uncertainties (Kaplan & Pear, 2017). Evidence reflects EDs are inundated with even more patients taking advantage of the availability of a one-stop shop for their care and treatment. Costs of ED services and resource allocation are rising as a result of these unnecessary visits contributing to a total healthcare expenditure of approximately 17.6% of the US …

Dispossession And Protection In The Neoliberal Era: The Politics Of Rural Development In Indigenous Communities In Chaco, Argentina., Mercedes Biocca
Dispossession And Protection In The Neoliberal Era: The Politics Of Rural Development In Indigenous Communities In Chaco, Argentina., Mercedes Biocca
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Neoliberal reforms and technological innovations associated with the agribusiness model have led to profound transformations in the Argentine agricultural sector. These transformations, far from being limited to a central region, are expanding rapidly into areas previously considered marginal, causing major changes in the socio-economic and cultural dynamics of those territories. As argued by Sanyal and Chatterjee, the state has played a dual role in these processes of ‘accumulation by dispossession.’ On the one hand, it has created the necessary conditions for the displacement of peasants and indigenous peoples while on the other hand, it has implemented programs that seek to …

The Chemistry And Biology Of Iron-Scavenging Natural Products From Pathogenic Acinetobacter Baumannii, Justin Shapiro
The Chemistry And Biology Of Iron-Scavenging Natural Products From Pathogenic Acinetobacter Baumannii, Justin Shapiro
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Multidrug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria represent a global health crisis. Traditional antibiotics create selective pressure and breed resistance, making our current drugs less and less effective. Targeting of bacterial virulence factors has gained interest as an alternative strategy to potentially circumvent this problem. Virulent Acinetobacter baumannii synthesize and secrete pre-acinetobactin, a small molecule metal chelator that scavenges life-sustaining iron and is critical for establishing infection. The work described herein sheds light on the unusual properties of a non-enzymatic isomerization from pre-acinetobactin to acinetobactin and proposes a siderophore-swapping mechanism by which A. baumannii expands its pH window for virulence. Knowledge from …

Transcriptome Profiling Of Cleft Palate Intgf-Beta3 Knockout Mice Alleles: Rna-Seq Analysis Of Tgf-Beta3 Mice, Kelsey White
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Orofacial clefts are the most common craniofacial birth defect with a complex, combinatorial etiology. Tgf-b3 regulates palatal fusion in mice; Tgf-b3 knockout mice have cleft palate (CP) lacking other major deformities. The genes downstream of Tgf-b3 during palatogenesis remain largely unexplored. Our objective was to analyze the global transcriptome changes and their contribution to CP and identify novel Tgf-b3 associated genes involved in formation of CP. We used RNA-sequencing to analyze and compare the whole transcriptome of Tgf-b3 alleles during palatal growth and fusion in mice.

A Translational Evaluation Of Renewal Of Inappropriate Mealtime Behavior, Vivian Ibañez, Cathleen C. Piazza, Kathryn M. Peterson
A Translational Evaluation Of Renewal Of Inappropriate Mealtime Behavior, Vivian Ibañez, Cathleen C. Piazza, Kathryn M. Peterson
Theses & Dissertations
The term renewal describes the recurrence of previously extinguished behavior that occurs when the intervention context changes. Renewal has important clinical relevance as a paradigm for studying treatment relapse because context changes are necessary for generalization and maintenance of most intervention outcomes (Podlesnik, Kelley, Jimenez-Gomez, & Bouton, 2017). The effect of context changes are particularly important during intervention for children with feeding disorders because children eat in a variety of contexts, and extinction is an empirically supported and often necessary intervention. Therefore, we used an ABA arrangement to test for renewal during intervention with 3 children diagnosed with a feeding …

Cuba has ratified international laws that hold it accountable for improving health outcomes especially for women and children. The U.S. can learn from Cuba when it comes to improving health outcomes. The U.S. can improve their health outcomes by including more preventative based interventions and ratifying international law that will hold the U.S. …
Health Starts In The Home: An Assessment Of Efforts To Improve Occupant Health Through Healthy Building Materials In San Francisco’S Affordable Housing, Staci Hoell
Master's Projects and Capstones
Americans spend 90% of their lives indoors, and much of this time is spent at home, surrounded by building materials that typically have added chemicals like flame retardants, highly fluorinated compounds, and antimicrobials. Recent research has linked these chemicals to adverse health outcomes such as asthma, endocrine disruption, cancer, neurodevelopmental issues, and reproductive problems (Bayer et al., n.d.; Green Science Policy Institute). Furthermore, these chronic health conditions disproportionately affect low-income populations. Fortunately, substantial efforts in research, practice, and policy are working to reduce the use of these potentially harmful chemicals in building materials, particularly in San Francisco’s affordable housing sector. …

Food Deserts: What Are The Decisions To Achieving A Healthy Life And Well-Being In Low Income €“ Low Access Neighborhoods?, Roxanne Jimenez
Student Scholarship
There has been a great deal of academic material and public policy published on food deserts, however, there still are significant gaps of understanding in regard to the lived experience of those individuals residing within those geographical locations. This study employed a qualitative methodology to elicit the lived experiences of 20 people who are living within a food desert. The findings from this research suggest those residing in food deserts, do not plan their purchases and travel to markets outside of their immediate neighborhoods in search of food products that have quality, variety and lower price points. It was also …
Maternal Life Course Adversity: The Intersection Of Psychosocial And Biobehavioral Adaptive Response In Pregnancy, Crystal Modde Epstein
Maternal Life Course Adversity: The Intersection Of Psychosocial And Biobehavioral Adaptive Response In Pregnancy, Crystal Modde Epstein
Theses & Dissertations
The link between life course adversity and adverse health outcomes is well established, particularly early life adversity (ELA). There is also evidence that the physiologic adaptations associated with stress, depression and ELA can be transmitted intergenerationally via long-term set-point changes within the maternal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). It is unknown how the type and timing of maternal stress and adversity influences HPA regulation during pregnancy and whether maternal coping attenuates this relationship. Manuscript 1 was an integrative review of studies examining the association between maternal ELA and HPA regulation during pregnancy. In manuscripts 2 and 3 the findings of the dissertation …
Metabolic Reprogramming Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cells In Response To Chronic Low Ph Stress, Jaime Abrego
Metabolic Reprogramming Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cells In Response To Chronic Low Ph Stress, Jaime Abrego
Theses & Dissertations
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is among the most lethal of all cancers with a 5-year survival rate of only 8.2%. This is because PDAC is diagnosed in its advanced stages and is characterized by radio and chemotherapy resistance. Aggressiveness of PDAC tumors is attributed to its high metabolic phenotype, which is characterized by increased glycolysis rate and lactate secretion, while oxidative metabolism is reduced. These metabolic features are required to fulfill the biosynthetic demands of proliferating PDAC cells. However, this increase in metabolic activity results in acidification of the extracellular space because the dense fibrotic stroma of PDAC tumors limits …
