Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Literature reviews have shown that three main gaps prevail in literature of counterfeit luxury brands. First, there is a mixed result regarding the effects on counterfeits. Second, past studies did not explore the interaction effects of consumers' need for status with the relationships between counterfeit product consumption and luxury fashion brand values. Third, past studies that explored the effects of counterfeits on original luxury brand values did not clearly define the dimensions of the value being studied. To address the gaps in the literature, this research studies the relationships between the social class of the counterfeit luxury fashion brand users, …

Assessment Of Security Vulnerabilities In Wearable Devices, Brian Cusack, Bryce Antony, Gerard Ward, Shaunak Mody

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Wearable devices have proliferated in usage and human experience, and they provide convenience for personal information requirements. These devices are both sensory and immersive for the diverse global network that is generally termed the Internet of things (IoT). The immediacy of the two-way communication created in the IoT has made vulnerable human behaviour and raised debate around information ownership and privacy expectations. The legitimacy of ownership of information and its reuse are prevalent problems. In this research, we tested four wearable devices that share 44% of the current market, for security vulnerabilities. We found serious weaknesses that could result in …

Literature-Based Analysis Of The Influences Of The New Forces On Isms: A Conceptual Framework, Zahir Al-Rashdi, Martin Dick, Ian Storey

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper presents an analysis that arose from a comprehensive review of the academic and professional literature of two areas – information security management systems (ISMS) and information resources – and their relationship with information security. It analyzes the role of ISMS in protecting an organization’s information environment and infrastructure. It has identified four key areas that strongly influence the safety of information resources: cloud computing; social media/networking; mobility; and information management/big data. Commonly referred to as ‘new forces’, these four aspects are all growing exponentially and are not easily controlled by IT. Another key finding of the paper is …

Sub-Regional Courts In Africa: Litigating The Hybrid Right To Freedom Of Movement, Laurence R. Helfer Jan 2017

Sub-Regional Courts In Africa: Litigating The Hybrid Right To Freedom Of Movement, Laurence R. Helfer

Faculty Scholarship

Human rights attorneys and civil society groups in Africa have recently focused their advocacy efforts on sub-regional courts associated with economic integration communities in East, West and Southern Africa. The East African Court of Justice (EACJ), the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Tribunal of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have received few suits challenging trade restrictions and other barriers to sub-regional integration. Instead, and surprisingly, the courts’ dockets are dominated by complaints alleging violations of international human rights law.
This article offers the first analysis of EACJ, ECOWAS Court and …

Incipient Ecological Speciation Between Successional Varieties Of A Dominant Tree Involves Intrinsic Postzygotic Isolating Barriers, E A. Stacy, B Paritosh, M A. Johnson, D K. Price Jan 2017

Incipient Ecological Speciation Between Successional Varieties Of A Dominant Tree Involves Intrinsic Postzygotic Isolating Barriers, E A. Stacy, B Paritosh, M A. Johnson, D K. Price

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Whereas disruptive selection imposed by heterogeneous environments can lead to the evolution of extrinsic isolating barriers between diverging populations, the evolution of intrinsic postzygotic barriers through divergent selection is less certain. Long-lived species such as trees may be especially slow to evolve intrinsic isolating barriers. We examined postpollination reproductive isolating barriers below the species boundary, in an ephemeral hybrid zone between two successional varieties of the landscape-dominant Hawaiian tree, Metrosideros polymorpha, on volcanically active Hawai'i Island. These archipelago-wide sympatric varieties show the weakest neutral genetic divergence of any taxon pair on Hawai'i Island but significant morphological and ecological differentiation consistent …

Covenants Running With The Land., Michael P. Pearson Jan 2017

Covenants Running With The Land., Michael P. Pearson

St. Mary's Law Journal

The analysis of real covenants in wellhead contracts (e.g., gas purchasing, gathering, processing, etc.) by Texas courts has not been consistent. As a result, some bankruptcy courts are holding that a debtor in bankruptcy is not liable for a prior contractual obligation, unless the covenant is held to be a real covenant running with the land. For instance, the holding in In re Sabine Oil & Gas Corp. (Sabine I) contradicts the holdings in Westland Oil Development Corp. v. Gulf Oil Corp. and in Inwood North Homeowners' Association, Inc. v. Harris. The Sabine I court held that because the Acreage …

The Supreme Court’S Limited Public Forum, Sonja R. West Jan 2017

The Supreme Court’S Limited Public Forum, Sonja R. West

Scholarly Works

When discussing the issue of transparency at the United States Supreme Court, most commentators focus on the line between public and private. Yet, transparency is not always such a black-or-white issue. There are, in fact, a surprising number of significant Court moments that occur neither wholly in public nor completely in private. Through policies that obstruct access by the general public and exploit real-world limitations on the press and practitioners, the justices have crafted a grey area in which they can be “public,” yet only to select audiences. The effect is that few outside the courtroom ever learn about these …

Financial Integration In Money Markets: Evidence From Saarc Region, Abdul Rafay, -- Fca, Saqib Farid

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the extent of financial integration between the four major money markets (Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh) in the SAARC region. To determine the association between these money markets, this study deployed variety of robust time series techniques such as JJ Co-integration Test, Granger Causality Test, Impulse Response Functions (IRF), and Variance Decomposition Analysis (VDC). Monthly data for the period 2007–2015 was utilized for the data analysis whereas Call Money rates and Interbank rates were used as proxies of money markets. The empirical findings confirmed the presence of long term relationship …

Gender Differences In Sexual Assault And Ptsd Stigma, Megan Kennedy Jan 2017

Gender Differences In Sexual Assault And Ptsd Stigma, Megan Kennedy

Honors Program Theses

Sexual assault is a significant problem in our society, and is experienced differently by male and female sexual assault victims. Stigma, or blame and negative attitudes toward an individual or group, is frequently experienced by sexual assault victims and reinforced through media, culture, and rape/sexual assault myths. Sexual assault and experiences of stigma influence the mental health problems victims face after assault, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Overall, insufficient research has been conducted on the differing experiences of stigma related to male and female sexual assault victims. In order to separate stigma attributions based on sexual assault status and PTSD, …

Monopolies In Multidistrict Litigation, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch Jan 2017

Monopolies In Multidistrict Litigation, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch

Scholarly Works

When transferee judges receive a multidistrict proceeding, they select a few lead plaintiffs’ lawyers to efficiently manage litigation and settlement negotiations. That decision gives those attorneys total control over all consolidated plaintiffs’ claims and rewards them richly in common-benefit fees. It’s no surprise then that these are coveted positions, yet empirical evidence confirms that the same attorneys occupy them time and again.

Anytime repeat players exist and exercise both oligopolistic leadership control across multidistrict proceedings and monopolistic power within a single proceeding, there is concern that they will use their dominance to enshrine practices and norms that benefit themselves at …
