Could Winter Annual Crop Choice Increase No-Till Double-Crop Soybean Yield In Kentucky?, Ethan M. Swiggart Jan 2017

Could Winter Annual Crop Choice Increase No-Till Double-Crop Soybean Yield In Kentucky?, Ethan M. Swiggart

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Double-cropping soybean (Glycine max L.) after a winter annual crop is common in Kentucky. The preceding winter annual crop may affect double-crop soybean yield in Kentucky. Producers and agronomists have reported greater double-crop soybean yields when preceded by winter canola (Brassica napus L.) rather than winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Explanations for these yield differences remain unresolved. The objectives of this study are to: (1) evaluate double-crop soybean productivity in field environments following four winter annual crop treatments; (2) determine differences of early soybean growth in greenhouse (GH) and cold chamber (CC) environments; and …

Increasing Renewable Oil Content And Utility, William Richard Serson Jan 2017

Increasing Renewable Oil Content And Utility, William Richard Serson

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Since the dawn of agriculture man has been genetically modifying crop plants to increase yield, quality and utility. In addition to selective breeding and hybridization we can utilize mutant populations and biotechnology to have greater control over crop plant modification than ever before. Increasing the production of plant oils such as soybean oil as a renewable resource for food and fuel is valuable. Successful breeding for higher oil levels in soybean, however, usually results in reduced protein, a second valuable seed component. We show that by manipulating a highly active acyl-CoA: diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) the hydrocarbon flux to oil in …

Studies Relating Pqq Biosynthesis To Putative Peptidases And Operon Structure In Pseudomonas Species, Benjamin Diaz Jan 2017

Studies Relating Pqq Biosynthesis To Putative Peptidases And Operon Structure In Pseudomonas Species, Benjamin Diaz

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Several bacteria isolated from the broccoli rhizosphere were assayed to compare their ability to solubilize phosphate and release pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) into the surrounding media. Subsequently, their genomes were sequenced and analyzed for PQQ biosynthesis operon structure. PQQ biosynthesis genes pqqA-F were found in all isolates. The order of PQQ biosynthesis genes and predicted amino acid sequences were compared to each other and the host’s ability to solubilize phosphate and release PQQ. In all Pseudomonas species, two putative protease genes, pqqF, and pqqG, flanked the canonical pqqA-pqqE biosynthesis operon. No mechanistic studies have confirmed the function of …

Pervasive Pedagogy: Collaborative Cloud-Based Composing Using Google Drive, Maury Elizabeth Brown, Daniel L. Hocutt

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

Cloud-based services designed for educational use, like Google Apps for Education (GAFE), afford deeply collaborative activities across multiple applications. Through primary research, the authors discovered that cloud-based technologies such as GAFE and Google Drive afford new opportunities for collaborative cross-platform composing and student engagement. These affordances require new pedagogies to transform these potentialities into practice, as well as a reexamination of contemporary theory of computers and composition. The authors’ journey implementing Google Drive as a composing and communication environment required continually remediating content, relationships, practices, and their own identities as they interacted with students in the cloud. This chapter addresses …

Legislating The First Amendment: A Trio Of Recommendations For Lawmakers Targeting Free Expression, Clay Calvert Jan 2017

Legislating The First Amendment: A Trio Of Recommendations For Lawmakers Targeting Free Expression, Clay Calvert

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

This Article offers three recommendations for lawmakers attempting to restrict expression that is presumptively protected by the First Amendment. The proposals include: (1) embracing a "prism of protection" through which all potential laws affecting expression are filtered prior to drafting; (2) mandating inclusion of sunset clauses in all statutes that may detrimentally impact free expression; and (3) adopting a comprehensive legislative oversight and review process for determining if an expired statute should be renewed, revised or abandoned. Although far from creating what Dean Roscoe Pound more than 100 years ago called a "science of legislation, " the proposals here nonetheless …

Genetic Analysis Of The A30.5 And L2 Proteins: Key Regulators Of Poxvirus Membrane Biogenesis, Justin Michael Radomski Jan 2017

Genetic Analysis Of The A30.5 And L2 Proteins: Key Regulators Of Poxvirus Membrane Biogenesis, Justin Michael Radomski

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Vaccinia is the model virus used to study the lifecycle of poxviruses, large DNA viruses that include agents of human disease such as smallpox and monkeypox. Unusual for DNA viruses, poxviruses replicate in the cytoplasm of the cell, autonomous from the nucleus. Because of this autonomy, the virus encodes a large number of genes devoted to replication and morphogenesis. The initial steps of morphogenesis, known as membrane biogenesis, remain unclear. The viral membrane is thought to originate from the endoplasmic reticulum; however, how the membrane is diverted from that organelle is currently not known. Various viral proteins have been identified …

Contributions Of Nanoscale Roughness To Anomalous Colloid Retention And Stability Behavior, Scott A. Bradford, Hyunjung Kim, Chongyang Shen, Salini Sasidharan, Jianying Shang Jan 2017

Contributions Of Nanoscale Roughness To Anomalous Colloid Retention And Stability Behavior, Scott A. Bradford, Hyunjung Kim, Chongyang Shen, Salini Sasidharan, Jianying Shang

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

All natural surfaces exhibit nanoscale roughness (NR) and chemical heterogeneity (CH) to some extent. Expressions were developed to determine the mean interaction energy between a colloid and a solid−water interface, as well as for colloid−colloid interactions, when both surfaces contain binary NR and CH. The influence of heterogeneity type, roughness parameters, solution ionic strength (IS), mean zeta potential, and colloid size on predicted interaction energy profiles was then investigated. The role of CH was enhanced on smooth surfaces with larger amounts of CH, especially for smaller colloids and higher IS. However, predicted interaction energy profiles were mainly dominated by NR, …

Dlvo Interaction Energies Between Hollow Spherical Particles And Collector Surfaces, Chongyang Shen, Scott Bradford, Zhan Wang, Yuanfang Huang, Yulong Zhang, Baoguo Li Jan 2017

Dlvo Interaction Energies Between Hollow Spherical Particles And Collector Surfaces, Chongyang Shen, Scott Bradford, Zhan Wang, Yuanfang Huang, Yulong Zhang, Baoguo Li

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The surface element integration technique was used to systematically study Derjaguin−Landau−Verwey−Overbeek (DLVO) interaction energies/forces between hollow spherical particles (HPs) and a planar surface or two intercepting half planes under different ionic strength conditions. The inner and outer spheres of HPs were concentric (CHP) or in point contact (PHP). In comparison to a solid particle, the attractive van der Waals interaction was reduced with increasing inner radius of the CHP, but the reduction effect was less significant for the CHP at smaller separation distance. Increasing the inner radius for CHP therefore reduced the depths of the secondary minima, but had minor …

The Emergence Of The Feminist Fatale In American Film Noir, Anne Dennon Jan 2017

The Emergence Of The Feminist Fatale In American Film Noir, Anne Dennon

All Master's Theses

The femme fatale, a quasi-eternal figure of female transgression and retributory violence, has gradually entered popular culture’s symbolic lexicon as representative of mainstream feminism and postmodern femininity. Tracing the development of the femme fatale into a feminist pop culture icon necessitates establishing her sociopolitical status in the late modern era through her presence in Victorian sensational literature. The femme’s translation from the Victorian context to the American mediascape presages her evolving presence in three cinematic eras: classic film noir, neo-conservative retro noir, and millennial neo-noir. Feminist film criticism tends to identify the femme fatale as a protofeminist, a productive transgressor …

Development And Formative Evaluation Of The Speak7 African American Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program, Mikeiya Y. Morrow

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex issue among African American children, who experience significantly higher rates of CSA (Sedlak et al., 2012). Despite this, a dearth of research has examined CSA prevention among African American children. Moreover, there are no established culturally sensitive prevention programs targeted at addressing CSA among this demographic. This study addressed a significant gap in the literature by developing and evaluating the Speak7 African American Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (Speak7). Speak7 is a culturally sensitive, adult-focused CSA prevention program that aims to enhance the CSA prevention competence of adults who provide for African American …

What Do Teachers Think About Educational Psychology? Developing And Validating The Educational Psychology Practitioner Scale, Lauren D. Hargrave Jan 2017

What Do Teachers Think About Educational Psychology? Developing And Validating The Educational Psychology Practitioner Scale, Lauren D. Hargrave

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Educational Psychology Practitioner Scale (EPPS), which was designed to (a) assess the practices, training, and skills of educational psychologists and (b) determine their utility among K-12 schools classroom teachers. Study participants included 161 K-12 teachers across 21 states within the United States. An exploratory factor analysis yielded a 25-item, unidimensional scale. Correlating the EPPS with the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001) and the Job Satisfaction Scale (Warner, 1973) provided discriminant validity for the scale. Study limitations and future research directions are discussed.
