Supporting Mechanistic Reasoning In Domain-Specific Contexts, Paul J. Weinberg
Supporting Mechanistic Reasoning In Domain-Specific Contexts, Paul J. Weinberg
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Mechanistic reasoning is an epistemic practice central within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. Although there has been some work on mechanistic reasoning in the research literature and standards documents, much of this work targets domain-general characterizations of mechanistic reasoning; this study provides domain-specific illustrations of mechanistic reasoning. The data in this study comes from the Assessment of Mechanistic Reasoning Project (AMRP) (Weinberg, 2012), designed using item response theory modeling to diagnose individuals’ mechanistic reasoning about systems of levers. Such a characterization of mechanistic reasoning illuminates what is easy and difficult about this form of reasoning, within the subdomain of …

Ion Parallel Closures, Jeong-Young Ji, Hankyu Q. Lee, Eric D. Held
All Physics Faculty Publications
Ion parallel closures are obtained for arbitrary atomic weights and charge numbers. For arbitrary collisionality, the heat flow and viscosity are expressed as kernel-weighted integrals of the temperature and flow-velocity gradients. Simple, fitted kernel functions are obtained from the 1600 parallel moment solution and the asymptotic behavior in the collisionless limit. The fitted kernel parameters are tabulated for various temperature ratios of ions to electrons. The closures can be used conveniently without solving the kinetic equation or higher order moment equations in closing ion fluid equations.

Faculty Publications
We examined organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts from one 210Pb-dated sediment core and 39 surface sediment samples from the northern Gulf of Mexico to determine the relationship between nutrient enrichment and cyst assemblages in this region characterized by oxygen deficiency. The core spans from 1962 to 1997 and its sampling location is directly influenced by the Mississippi River plume. Surface sediments were collected in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2014 and represent approximately 1 to 4 years of accumulation. A total of 57 cyst taxa were recorded, and four heterotrophic taxa in particular were found to increase in the top section (1986–1997) of …

The Use Of Formative Instructional Practices To Improve Student Performance, Courtney L. St. John-Wacker
The Use Of Formative Instructional Practices To Improve Student Performance, Courtney L. St. John-Wacker
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores teacher and school leadership perceptions on the use of Formative Instructional Practices (FIP) in classroom settings located in a large urban school district. Research indicates that using formative assessment can increase student achievement; however, professional learning of such practices is needed (Frey & Fisher, 2013; Harrison, O’Hara & McNamara, 2015; Wiliam, Lee, Harrison & Black, 2004). Research questions developed for this study included one main question and three secondary questions. The main question explored the participant’s perceptions of FIP implementation while the secondary questions focused on the development of student motivation and classroom assessments for students. Additionally, …

A Novel Weak Estimator For Dynamic Systems, Moinak Bhaduri, Justin Zhan, Carter Chiu
Computer Science Faculty Research
In this paper, we propose a novel approach for classifying incoming continuous data under a non-stationary environment. A class of estimators termed stochastic learning weak estimators has been generalized to include continuous time sampling and countable state categories. The method is founded on non-stationary Markov chain techniques and is useful in diverse applications, such as consumer behavior analysis, e-mail spam classification, or understanding drug effectiveness. In terms of tracking the true state probabilities, these weak estimators consistently outperform traditional competitors such as maximum likelihood estimates. Only one user defined parameter is necessary and the method is free of subjective 'moving …

Investigation Of Aerosol Optical And Chemical Properties Using Humidity Controlled Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, Xijing Zhu
Dissertations and Theses
Scientists have been observing a change in the climate since the beginning of the 20th century that cannot be attributed to any of the natural influences of the past. Natural and anthropogenic substances and processes perturb the Earth's energy budget, contributing to climate change. In particular, aerosols (particles suspended in air) have long been recognized to be important in processes throughout the atmosphere that affect climate. They directly influence the radiative balance of the Earth's atmosphere, affect cloud formation and properties, and are also key air pollutants that contribute to a variety of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Despite their …
Physics Based Approach For Seafloor Classification, Phu Duy Nguyen
Physics Based Approach For Seafloor Classification, Phu Duy Nguyen
Dissertations and Theses
The seafloor properties are of high importance for many applications such as marine biology, oil and gas exploration, laying cables, dredging operations and off-shore construction. Several approaches exist to classify the properties of the seabed. These include taking direct samples of the seabed (e.g., coring), however, these methods are costly and slow. Underwater acoustic remote sensing techniques are of interest because they are lower cost and faster. The information about the seabed properties can be extracted by studying the energy of single beam echo sounders (SBES). This can be done by either phenomenological or numerical methods [1], [2]. This research …

Community Structure Of Benthic Algae In A Lotic Ecosystem, Karbala Province-Iraq, F. M. Hassan, J. M Salman, S. Al-Nasrawi
Baghdad Science Journal
This study focused on benthic algae (epipelic and attached algae on concrete lining stream) in Bani-Hassan stream in Holly Karbala, Iraq. The qualitative and quantitative studies of benthic algae were done by collecting 240 samples from five sites in the study area for the period from December 2012 to November 2013. Also, the environmental variables of the stream were examined in term of temporary and spatial. The results showed that the stream was alkaline, hard, oligohaline and a well aerated. The total nitrogen to the total phosphorus (TN: TP) ratio indicates nitrogen limitation. 129 species of benthic algae belonging to …

Bayes And Non-Bayes Estimation Methods For The Parameter Of Maxwell-Boltzmann Distribution, Iden H. Alkanani, Shayma G. Salman
Baghdad Science Journal
In this paper, point estimation for parameter θ of Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution has been investigated by using simulation technique, to estimate the parameter by two sections methods; the first section includes Non-Bayesian estimation methods, such as (Maximum Likelihood estimator method, and Moment estimator method), while the second section includes standard Bayesian estimation method, using two different priors (Inverse Chi-Square and Jeffrey) such as (standard Bayes estimator, and Bayes estimator based on Jeffrey's prior). Comparisons among these methods were made by employing mean square error measure. Simulation technique for different sample sizes has been used to compare between these methods.

On The Connection Between The Dynamical System And The Ellis Compactification With Transitive Pointed System, Lieth A. Majed
Baghdad Science Journal
In this paper, some relations between the flows and the Enveloping Semi-group were studied. It allows to associate some properties on the topological compactification to any pointed flows. These relations enable us to study a number of the properties of the principles of flows corresponding with using algebric properties. Also in this paper proofs to some theorems of these relations are given.

Experimental Study On Automatic Control For Collision Avoidance Of Ships, Daeng Paroka, Muhammad Fahmi Kamil, Andi Haris Muhammad
Makara Journal of Technology
Automatic control system is widely applied to control the ship direction or heading angle in accordance with the decided trajectory. Several methods for improving performance of control system have been developed such as Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control and fuzzy logic based control. Within the last decade, application of automatic control system is not only for ship navigation but also for avoiding collision risk of ships in seaways. This paper discusses the application of automatic control system for avoiding ship collision by free running experiment. Fuzzy logic based control was developed using Mamdani Centroid method to estimate the necessary rudder angle in …
