Electrochemical Method For Characterization And Ranking Of Corrosion Inhibitors, Brett Kelly Jan 2017

Electrochemical Method For Characterization And Ranking Of Corrosion Inhibitors, Brett Kelly

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

One of the most cost-effective methods in mitigating corrosion effects is through the use of corrosion inhibitors. This work studied the performance of eight organic inhibitors on mild steel substrate through electrochemical characterization techniques, with the primary goal of incorporating a screening process to sift through the large selection of potential inhibitors without having to fully characterize them. The test methodology developed was successful at screening the potential corrosion inhibitors through linear polarization resistance (LPR) testing in NaCl electrolyte, narrowing the collection of inhibitors to the three most-promising chemicals, adrenalone, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and dopamine. The screened inhibitors proved effective in …

Influence Of Surface Topography And Curing Chemistry On Fouling-Release Performance Of Self-Stratified Siloxane-Polyurethane Coatings, Madhura Pade Jan 2017

Influence Of Surface Topography And Curing Chemistry On Fouling-Release Performance Of Self-Stratified Siloxane-Polyurethane Coatings, Madhura Pade

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Biofouling, the attachment and growth of microorganisms and aquatic animals on submerged surfaces, poses many economic and environmental challenges like increase in frictional drag, fuel consumption, and cost of maintenance of ships. Coatings containing harmful biocides, called anti-fouling (AF) coatings, are used to combat fouling. But, the biocides proved toxic to the aquatic environment, which led to replacement of AF coatings by non-toxic fouling-release (FR) coatings. FR coatings do not contain toxic biocides and allow formation of a weak bond between the surface and the organisms, which can be easily broken through light grooming or hydrodynamic forces. Current research is …

Cardiac Output Improvement In Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, Muhammad Bilal Qureshi Jan 2017

Cardiac Output Improvement In Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, Muhammad Bilal Qureshi

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Mechanical circulatory support devices (MCSDs) have gained widespread clinical acceptance as an effective heart failure (HF) therapy. The concept of harnessing the kinetic energy (KE) available in the forward aortic flow (AOF) is proposed as a novel control strategy to further increase the cardiac output (CO) provided by MCSDs. A complete mathematical development of the proposed theory and its application to an example MCSDs (two-segment extra-aortic cuff) are presented. To achieve improved device performance and physiologic benefit, the example MCSD timing is regulated to maximize the forward AOF KE and minimize retrograde flow. The proof-of-concept was tested to provide support …

Viewer-Aware Intelligent Mobile Video System For Prolonged Battery Life, Peng Gao Jan 2017

Viewer-Aware Intelligent Mobile Video System For Prolonged Battery Life, Peng Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering

In the modern society, mobile is gradually going to become all about video streaming. The main reasons of video growth are mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets which enable people to have access to videos they would like to watch at anywhere and anytime. However, due to the large video data size and intensive computation, video processing leads to a huge power consumption. Mobile system designers typically focus on hardware-level power optimization techniques without considering how hardware performance interfaces with viewer experience. In my research, I investigated how viewing context factors affect mobile viewing experience. Furthermore, a viewer-aware intelligent …

Serious mental illness (SMI) is disabling, and current interventions are ineffective for many. This exploratory study sought to demonstrate the feasibility of applying topological data analysis (TDA) to resting-state functional connectivity data obtained from a heterogeneous sample of 235 adult inpatients to identify a biomarker of treatment response. TDA identified two groups based on connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and striatal regions: patients admitted with greater functional connectivity between these regions evidenced less improvement from admission to discharge than patients with lesser connectivity between them. TDA identified a potential biomarker of an attenuated treatment response among inpatients with SMI. Insofar …

An Attempt To Profile Persistent Online Students And Graduates, Randy Vincent Stach Jan 2017

An Attempt To Profile Persistent Online Students And Graduates, Randy Vincent Stach

Education

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the characteristics of online graduates, and characteristics of students who persist online with their coursework, could be identified. A mixed methods approach was used incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research methods. First, student demographic information was analyzed to identify any patterns or trends of persistent online students. Second, a survey was utilized to collect data from current students and graduates from online programs. Third, qualitative data was collected through conducting phone interviews of online graduates who have graduated in the last five years. Conclusions were drawn from the research and advice …

Strategically Managing Product Innovation To Create Consumer Value: An Analysis In The Context Of The Australian Electric Vehicle Market, Brendan Koehler Jan 2017

Strategically Managing Product Innovation To Create Consumer Value: An Analysis In The Context Of The Australian Electric Vehicle Market, Brendan Koehler

Theses

This thesis encompasses a body of research which looks to explore how strategic management, consumer value and product innovation interrelate. In particular, this research will evaluate such a unilateral relationship in specific reference to product innovations developed as a result of emerging and disruptive technology. Therefore, this research will be conducted in the context of the Australian electric vehicle industry. This industry was selected as it has displayed traits of an industry with companies that have a desire to incorporate electric vehicle product innovations into their portfolio from a strategic perspective; yet these product innovations have no particular consumer demand …

Orientable ℤ < Inf> N -Distance Magic Labeling Of The Cartesian Product Of Many Cycles, Bryan Freyberg, Melissa S. Keranen Jan 2017

Orientable ℤ < Inf> N -Distance Magic Labeling Of The Cartesian Product Of Many Cycles, Bryan Freyberg, Melissa S. Keranen

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The following generalization of distance magic graphs was introduced in [2]. A directed ℤn- distance magic labeling of an oriented graph G = (V,A) of order n is a bijection ℓ: V → ℤn with the property that there is a μ ∈ ℤn (called the magic constant) such that If for a graph G there exists an orientation G such that there is a directed ℤn-distance magic labeling ℓ for G, we say that G is orientable ℤn-distance magic and the directed ℤn-distance magic labeling ℓ we call an orientable ℤn-distance magic labeling. In this paper, we find orientable …

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler Jan 2017

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Many academic libraries have implemented institutional repositories (IR), which offer some potential for publishing and archiving data but can fall short of usability expectations and requirements. As general purpose repositories, IR's may lack the metadata and service capabilities to dynamically represent data and to effectively capitalize on complex, domain oriented metadata schema such as the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) or the ISO 19115-2014 Geographic information metadata standards. For libraries interested in providing data publishing services, one alternative to the domain agnostic nature of IR content and metadata models is to maintain the IR for traditional document types and in addition …
