A Need For An Integrative Security Model For Semantic Stream Reasoning Systems, Admirim Aliti, Edmond Jajaga, Kozeta Sevrani
UBT International Conference
State-of-the-art security frameworks have been extensively addressing security issues for web resources, agents and services in the Semantic Web. The provision of Stream Reasoning as a new area spanning Semantic Web and Data Stream Management Systems has eventually opened up new challenges. Namely, their decentralized nature, the metadata descriptions, the number of users, agents, and services, make securing Stream Reasoning systems difficult to handle. Thus, there is an inherent need of developing new security models which will handle security and automate security mechanisms to a more autonomous system that supports complex and dynamic relationships between data, clients and service providers. …

State Feedback Of Complex Systems Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, Vassiliki Mpelogianni, Ioannis Arvanitakis, Peter P. Groumpos
UBT International Conference
Complex systems have become a research area with increasing interest over the last years. The emergence of new technologies, the increase in computational power with reduced resources and cost, the integration of the physical world with computer based systems has created the possibility of significantly improving the quality of life of humans. While a significant degree of automation within these systems exists and has been provided in the past decade with examples of the smart homes and energy efficient buildings, a paradigm shift towards autonomy has been noted. The need for autonomy requires the extraction of a model; while a …

Novel Insights Into An Old Methodology: Upgrading The Use Of Tethered Swimming, Pedro G. Morouço
Novel Insights Into An Old Methodology: Upgrading The Use Of Tethered Swimming, Pedro G. Morouço
ISBS Proceedings Archive
More than 40 years ago, Magel (1970) used tracings with a compensating polar planimeter to measure propelling forces in swimming. By that time, average height of the curves was calculated in millimetres and converted to average force measures. Advances in technology, permitted picking up old methodologies and give them new features. In fact, the use of a force transducer to assess the forces exerted by a swimmer in his/her real environment turned out to be a useful methodology for training prescription. Nowadays, a load-cell can continuously record the force-time curves and to straightaway provide the calculation of several variables. Thus, …

The Relationship Of Anthropometry And Body Composition With Running Economy, Sam J. Allen, Matthew I. Black, Steph E. Forrester, Joseph C. Handsaker, Jonathan P. Folland
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of anthropometry and body composition with running economy within a large heterogeneous cohort of runners. Locomotory energy cost was determined in ninety-four healthy male and female endurance runners across a range of performance standards. Various anthropometric and body composition measurements were taken manually and via DXA scans. The relationships between anthropometry and running economy were assessed using independent Pearson’s correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression. Three parameters, normalised neck and calf perimeters and normalised whole body bone mass explained 30% of the variance in locomotory energy cost. Low locomotory energy …
Rotation And Braking Strategies To Perform A Successful Cutting Maneuver, Sina David, Ralf Müller, Igor Komnik, Wolfgang Potthast
Rotation And Braking Strategies To Perform A Successful Cutting Maneuver, Sina David, Ralf Müller, Igor Komnik, Wolfgang Potthast
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study aimed to reveal principle movement strategies during successful 90° cutting maneuvers (CMs). Investigation of the pelvis rotation angle showed that subjects mainly use two strategies: one with most of the 90° cutting angle already realized within the body rotation prior to the transition step or one with the rotation executed after transition. These different turning strategies also impacted the way subjects deflected their COM velocity. Pre-rotation results in a more effective movement and less injury risk while post-rotation is suggested to occur in unanticipated cutting maneuvers.

Effect Of Altitude On 100-M Sprint Times: An Analysis Of Race Times From The Finals At Major Championships, Nicholas P. Linthorne
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of altitude on 100-m sprint times. A nonlinear regression analysis was conducted using competition data from the finals at major championships. The results indicate that the time advantage of competing at an altitude of 2250 m is about 0.19 ± 0.10 s for men and 0.23 ± 0.13 s for women. This is a substantial performance advantage and so the altitude of the competition venue should be taken into consideration when recognizing record performances.

Effect Of Seating Cushions On Pressure Distribution In Wheelchair Racing, Amy Lewis, Elissa Phillips, Paul Grimshaw, Marc Portus, William S P Robertson
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated the efficacy of pressure mapping technology in quantifying athlete-wheelchair interaction at the seating interface, and the influence of foam inserts on pressure (peak and average), and contact area. An XSENSOR LX100 pressure mat was located at the seating interface of six nationally ranked wheelchair racing athletes, who performed regular propulsion on treadmill. Substantial inter-athlete variation was observed on resulting pressure distribution (area and magnitude) for all athletes. Implementation of a foam insert did not impede recording ability, however did alter seating characteristics, lowering seating pressure (peak and average), and increasing contact area. This increase may enhance athlete-wheelchair …

Reflex Responses To Local Soleus Muscle Vibration, Axel J. Knicker, Haitham Abdulhafiz, Kirsten Albracht
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aims of the present work was i. to investigate the acute effects of prolonged vibratory stimulation on short-latency stretch reflexes (SLR) of soleus muscle, ii. to assess effects of vibration on parameters of the H-reflex and M-wave stimulus-response curves. There were no changes in the EMG of SLR. During vibration H-reflex amplitudes decreased but H-reflex threshold current increased. None of the H-reflex parameters showed timedependent changes. In contrast, maximum M-wave magnitude (MMAX) decreased after 30min of sustained vibration. The analysis suggests differential effects of presynaptic inhibition on -motoneurons. The vibration parameters have no effect on excitability of afferent and …

We aimed to determine the influence of triceps surae (TS) muscle strength and Achilles tendon (AT) stiffness on age-related changes in locomotor performance and motor task execution strategy during a drop jump (DJ) task. After matching 12 young and 12 middleaged adults for TS muscle strength and AT stiffness, all subjects performed a series of DJs from different starting heights. Matched young and middle-aged adults showed similar DJ performance but the middle-aged adults showed significantly longer ground contact times, lower values in maximum vertical ground reaction force during the support phase and lower mechanical power, independent of starting height. These …

Biomechanical Complexity: A Measure To Delineate Between Athletic Groin Pain Patients And Uninjured Controls, Shane Gore, Andrew Franklyn-Miller, Chris Richter, Eanna Falvey, Enda King, Kieran Moran
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigates if signal complexity is a useful measure to delineate between patients diagnosed with athletic groin pain (AGP) and uninjured controls. The 3D biomechanics of 65 AGP patients and 50 uninjured controls were examined during a lateral hurdle hop exercise. The complexity of hip moments was examined using quadratic sample entropy and statistically tested using independent t-tests. The results from this study demonstrated that the AGP group had significantly less complexity in hip moments in comparison to the uninjured control group with effect size ranging from 0.53 - 0.96. These findings would suggest that signal complexity of hip …

In the last 20 years the long jump world record of athletes with an amputation of the lower extremities has improved by over two meters. However, there is no recent research on amputee long jumping and no information about amputee long jump kinetics. In this study the take-off step of an Olympic and a Paralympic champion were analyzed with regard to jumping mechanics. A 3D motion capturing system (Vicon) and a force plate (Kistler) were used to capture kinematic and kinetic data. Inverse dynamic calculations (Dynamicus, Alaska) revealed remarkable differences with respect to mechanical loading and motor solutions between the …

Gymnasts flex at the hips in the lower part and extend in the upper part of the giant circle. In order to perform a sequence of circles at even tempo, any variation in angular velocity at the end of the flexion phase needs to be reduced by the end of the extension phase. The aim of this study was to determine the nature and contribution of such adjustments. A computer simulation model of a gymnast on high bar was used to investigate strategies of (a) fixed timing of the extension phase (feedforward control) and (b) stretched timing (feedforward and feedback …
Using A Breakpoint To Determine The Optimal Cut-Off Frequency, David R. Mullineaux
Using A Breakpoint To Determine The Optimal Cut-Off Frequency, David R. Mullineaux
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aims of this study were to compare methods of determining the optimal cut-off frequency (CFopt) for a Butterworth filter. CFopt were determined for leg displacement data for treadmill running through residual analysis using regression (RA0reg), integral of the power spectral density (PSD), and both these methods analysed through a new ‘breakpoint’ method. RA0reg did not correlate with other methods suggesting poor concurrent validity. The ‘breakpoint’ method correlated significantly between several methods. CFopt was least for anterio-posterior and highest for vertical directions for all methods (p<0.05). Settings for RA0reg and PSD can have substantial effects on CFopt, but the ‘breakpoint’ is not affected as much by the settings. Future research should attempt to standardise settings and explore the criterion validity of the methods to determine CFopt.

Analysis Of Lower Limb Bilateral Force Asymmetries By Different Vertical Jump Techniques, Sílvia Ribeiro Santos Araújo, Fabíola Bertú Medeiros, Edgardo Alvares De Abreu, Nathália Oliveira Gonçalves, Hans-Joachim Karl Menzel
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study has compared the diagnostic information of lower limb bilateral force asymmetry by the impulse variable at different vertical jump techniques. Twenty-nine soccer players carried out six attempts at each of the vertical jumps, countermovement jump and squat jump, on two synchronized force platforms. After the calculation of the symmetry index, the athletes were classified as symmetric and asymmetric respecting a cut-off value of 15%, McNemar’s test compared the diagnostic information among the techniques. Significant differences were found among the diagnostic information of the different techniques (p<0.05). It is thus concluded that different vertical jump techniques provide different information in regards to the level of bilateral force asymmetry in soccer players.
