How Should You Plan Your App’S Features? Selecting And Prioritizing A Mobile App’S Initial Features Based On User Reviews, Rebaz Saber Saleh Nov 2017

How Should You Plan Your App’S Features? Selecting And Prioritizing A Mobile App’S Initial Features Based On User Reviews, Rebaz Saber Saleh

Theses

The app market is extremely competitive, with users typically having several alternative app possibilities. To attract and retain users, it is imperative for developers to consider the ratings and reviews their apps receive. App reviews frequently contain feature requests, sometimes hidden among complaints. Developers use these complaints and requests to improve their apps, thus increasing their rating which is incredibly important for attracting new users. Unfortunately, developers of new apps are at a severe disadvantage: They do not have the benefit of existing reviews, with only the reviews of similar apps to potentially rely upon. To address this problem, we …

The Irishtheatre As Imaginative Space: A Vehicle And Venue For The Reconstruction Of The Irish Identity, Rania M Rafik Khalil Nov 2017

The Irishtheatre As Imaginative Space: A Vehicle And Venue For The Reconstruction Of The Irish Identity, Rania M Rafik Khalil

English Language and Literature

Current cultural and political changes have prompted the theatre to play a significant role in staging the transformations of the Irish identity. Over time, it has provided an impetus for expressions of the collective new self-image of the Irish. Re-inventing the self requires a manifestation of space and the production of space whether geographical, metaphorical or a physical stage representation. ‘Space’has been utilisedin Irish drama in terms ofgeographical location, cartography, socialmedia, technology, immigration, and the theatre stage. Globalisation has also played a crucial role in terms of creating overlapping spacesand multiple belongings. This study will examinethrough Henri Lefebvre’s theory of space, …

Towards New Weather And Climate Baselines For Assessing Weather And Climate Extremes, Impacts, And Risks, Fiona Williamson, Rob Allan, Roseanne D'Arrigo Nov 2017

Towards New Weather And Climate Baselines For Assessing Weather And Climate Extremes, Impacts, And Risks, Fiona Williamson, Rob Allan, Roseanne D'Arrigo

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Initiatives to recover (sourcing, imaging, digitizing) historic datasets for generating more accurate longterm climate models have only gained momentum over the last decade, despite a long precedent of compelling arguments as to the value of historic weather observations (Le Roy Ladurie, 1972; Lamb, 1977). Although such work is relatively well established in Europe, the United States, China, and Japan; Southeast Asia currently has a dearth of data rescue initiatives with a long historical focus. The reasons behind this include a perception of the paucity of surviving data; the scattered nature of data due to shifts between colonial rule and independence …

Energy Consumption Modeling Of Stereolithography-Based Additive Manufacturing Toward Environmental Sustainability, Yiran Yang, Lin Li, Yayue Pan, Zeyi Sun

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Additive manufacturing (AM), also referred as three-dimensional printing or rapid prototyping, has been implemented in various areas as one of the most promising new manufacturing technologies in the past three decades. In addition to the growing public interest in developing AM into a potential mainstream manufacturing approach, increasing concerns on environmental sustainability, especially on energy consumption, have been presented. To date, research efforts have been dedicated to quantitatively measuring and analyzing the energy consumption of AM processes. Such efforts only covered partial types of AM processes and explored inadequate factors that might influence the energy consumption. In addition, energy consumption …

Learning Curve Analysis Using Intensive Longitudinal And Cluster-Correlated Data, Xiao Zhong, Zeyi Sun, Haoyi Xiong, Neil Heffernan, Md Monirul Islam

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Intensive longitudinal and cluster-correlated data (ILCCD) can be generated in any situation where numerical or categorical characteristics of multiple individuals or study units are observed and measured at tens, hundreds, or thousands of occasions. The spacing of measurements in time for each individual can be regular or irregular, fixed or random, and the number of characteristics measured at each occasion may be few or many. Such data can also arise in situations involving continuous-time measurements of recurrent events. Generalized linear models (GLMs) are usually considered for the analysis of correlated non-normal data, while multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is another …

Analysis Of Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems Based On Operational Scenarios Using Value Modelling, Akash Vidyadharan, Robert Philpott Iii, Benjamin J. Kwasa, Christina L. Bloebaum

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, the use of UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) has moved beyond the realm of military operations and has made its way into the hands of consumers and commercial industries. Although the applications of UAS in commercial industries are virtually endless, there are many issues regarding their operations that need to be considered before these valuable pieces of equipment are allowed for widespread civil use. Currently, UAS operations in the public domain are guided and controlled by the FAA Part 107 rules after overwhelming public pressure caused by the earlier 333 exemption. In order to approach such larger issues, …

Chronological Profiling For Paleography, Nicholas Howe, Stephanie Xie Nov 2017

Chronological Profiling For Paleography, Nicholas Howe, Stephanie Xie

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

This paper approaches manuscript dating from a Bayesian perspective. Prior work on paleographic date recovery has generally sought to predict a single date for a manuscript. Bayesian analysis makes it possible to estimate a probability distribution that varies with respect to time. This in turn enables a number of alternative analyses that may be of more use to practitioners. For example, it may be useful to identify a range of years that will include a document’s creation date with a particular confidence level. The methods are demonstrated on a selection of Syriac documents created prior to 1300 CE.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we describe a methodology for leveraging large amounts of customer interaction data with online content from major social media platforms in order to isolate meaningful customer segments. The methodology is robust in that it can rapidly identify diverse customer segments using solely online behaviors and then associate these behavioral customer segments with the related distinct demographic segments, presenting a holistic picture of the customer base of an organization. We validate our methodology via the implementation of a working system that rapidly and in near real-time processes tens of millions of online customer interactions with content posted on …

Interactive Social Recommendation, Xin Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chenghao Liu, Martin Ester Nov 2017

Interactive Social Recommendation, Xin Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chenghao Liu, Martin Ester

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social recommendation has been an active research topic over the last decade, based on the assumption that social information from friendship networks is beneficial for improving recommendation accuracy, especially when dealing with cold-start users who lack sufficient past behavior information for accurate recommendation. However, it is nontrivial to use such information, since some of a person's friends may share similar preferences in certain aspects, but others may be totally irrelevant for recommendations. Thus one challenge is to explore and exploit the extend to which a user trusts his/her friends when utilizing social information to improve recommendations. On the other hand, …

Second-Order Online Active Learning And Its Applications, Shuji Hao, Jing Lu, Peilin Zhao, Chi Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao Nov 2017

Second-Order Online Active Learning And Its Applications, Shuji Hao, Jing Lu, Peilin Zhao, Chi Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The goal of online active learning is to learn predictive models from a sequence of unlabeled data given limited label querybudget. Unlike conventional online learning tasks, online active learning is considerably more challenging because of two reasons.Firstly, it is difficult to design an effective query strategy to decide when is appropriate to query the label of an incoming instance givenlimited query budget. Secondly, it is also challenging to decide how to update the predictive models effectively whenever the true labelof an instance is queried. Most existing approaches for online active learning are often based on a family of first-order online …

Predicting Indoor Crowd Density Using Column-Structured Deep Neural Network, Akihito Sudo, Teck Hou (Deng Dehao) Teng, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yoshihide Sekimoto Nov 2017

Predicting Indoor Crowd Density Using Column-Structured Deep Neural Network, Akihito Sudo, Teck Hou (Deng Dehao) Teng, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yoshihide Sekimoto

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This work proposes a deep neural network approach known as the column-structured deep neural network (COL-DNN-R) for predicting crowd density in an indoor environment using historical Wi-Fi traces of individual visitors. With a structure designed to minimize feature engineering, COL-DNN accepts raw features such as crowd density, opening and closing hours and peak visitor counts for extracting features. The extracted features are used by a regression model R for predicting the crowd densities. Standard regression models such as MLP, RF and SVM can be used as R. Experiments are performed to investigate the effect of feature representation and model structure …

A Fast Trajectory Outlier Detection Approach Via Driving Behavior Modeling, Hao Wu, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng Nov 2017

A Fast Trajectory Outlier Detection Approach Via Driving Behavior Modeling, Hao Wu, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Trajectory outlier detection is a fundamental building block for many location-based service (LBS) applications, with a large application base. We dedicate this paper on detecting the outliers from vehicle trajectories efficiently and effectively. In addition, we want our solution to be able to issue an alarm early when an outlier trajectory is only partially observed (i.e., the trajectory has not yet reached the destination). Most existing works study the problem on general Euclidean trajectories and require accesses to the historical trajectory database or computations on the distance metric that are very expensive. Furthermore, few of existing works consider some specific …

The Impact Of Coverage On Bug Density In A Large Industrial Software Project, Thomas Bach, Artur Andrzejak, Ralf Pannemans, David Lo Nov 2017

The Impact Of Coverage On Bug Density In A Large Industrial Software Project, Thomas Bach, Artur Andrzejak, Ralf Pannemans, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Measuring quality of test suites is one of the major challenges of software testing. Code coverage identifies tested and untested parts of code and is frequently used to approximate test suite quality. Multiple previous studies have investigated the relationship between coverage ratio and test suite quality, without a clear consent in the results. In this work we study whether covered code contains a smaller number of future bugs than uncovered code (assuming appropriate scaling). If this correlation holds and bug density is lower in covered code, coverage can be regarded as a meaningful metric to estimate the adequacy of testing. …

On Locating Malicious Code In Piggybacked Android Apps, Li Li, Daoyuan Li, Tegawende F. Bissyande, Jacques Klein, Haipeng Cai, David Lo, Yves Le Traon Nov 2017

On Locating Malicious Code In Piggybacked Android Apps, Li Li, Daoyuan Li, Tegawende F. Bissyande, Jacques Klein, Haipeng Cai, David Lo, Yves Le Traon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To devise efficient approaches and tools for detecting malicious packages in the Android ecosystem, researchers are increasingly required to have a deep understanding of malware. There is thus a need to provide a framework for dissecting malware and locating malicious program fragments within app code in order to build a comprehensive dataset of malicious samples. Towards addressing this need, we propose in this work a tool-based approach called HookRanker, which provides ranked lists of potentially malicious packages based on the way malware behaviour code is triggered. With experiments on a ground truth of piggybacked apps, we are able to automatically …

File-Level Defect Prediction: Unsupervised Vs. Supervised Models, Meng Yan, Yicheng Fang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Xiaohong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Background: Software defect models can help software quality assurance teams to allocate testing or code review resources. A variety of techniques have been used to build defect prediction models, including supervised and unsupervised methods. Recently, Yang et al. [1] surprisingly find that unsupervised models can perform statistically significantly better than supervised models in effort-aware change-level defect prediction. However, little is known about relative performance of unsupervised and supervised models for effort-aware file-level defect prediction. Goal: Inspired by their work, we aim to investigate whether a similar finding holds in effort-aware file-level defect prediction. Method: We replicate Yang et al.'s study …

Apibot: Question Answering Bot For Api Documentation, Yuan Tian, Ferdian Thung, Abhishek Sharma, David Lo Nov 2017

Apibot: Question Answering Bot For Api Documentation, Yuan Tian, Ferdian Thung, Abhishek Sharma, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the carrier of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) knowledge, API documentation plays a crucial role in how developers learn and use an API. It is also a valuable information resource for answering API-related questions, especially when developers cannot find reliable answers to their questions online/offline. However, finding answers to API-related questions from API documentation might not be easy because one may have to manually go through multiple pages before reaching the relevant page, and then read and understand the information inside the relevant page to figure out the answers. To deal with this challenge, we develop APIBot, a bot that …

Eeg-Based Emotion Recognition Via Fast And Robust Feature Smoothing, Cheng Tang, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao Nov 2017

Eeg-Based Emotion Recognition Via Fast And Robust Feature Smoothing, Cheng Tang, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Electroencephalograph (EEG) signals reveal much of our brain states and have been widely used in emotion recognition. However, the recognition accuracy is hardly ideal mainly due to the following reasons: (i) the features extracted from EEG signals may not solely reflect one’s emotional patterns and their quality is easily affected by noise; and (ii) increasing feature dimension may enhance the recognition accuracy, but it often requires extra computation time. In this paper, we propose a feature smoothing method to alleviate the aforementioned problems. Specifically, we extract six statistical features from raw EEG signals and apply a simple yet cost-effective feature …

Classification-Based Parameter Synthesis For Parametric Timed Automata, Jiaying Li, Jun Sun, Bo Gao, Étienne Andre Nov 2017

Classification-Based Parameter Synthesis For Parametric Timed Automata, Jiaying Li, Jun Sun, Bo Gao, Étienne Andre

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Parametric timed automata are designed to model timed systems with unknown parameters, often representing design uncertainties of external environments. In order to design a robust system, it is crucial to synthesize constraints on the parameters, which guarantee the system behaves according to certain properties. Existing approaches suffer from scalability issues. In this work, we propose to enhance existing approaches through classification-based learning. We sample multiple concrete values for parameters and model check the corresponding non-parametric models. Based on the checking results, we form conjectures on the constraint through classification techniques, which can be subsequently confirmed by existing model checkers for …

Anomaly Detection For A Water Treatment System Using Unsupervised Machine Learning, Jun Inoue, Yoriyuki Yamagata, Yuqi Chen, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose and evaluate the application of unsupervised machine learning to anomaly detection for a Cyber-Physical System (CPS). We compare two methods: Deep Neural Networks (DNN) adapted to time series data generated by a CPS, and one-class Support Vector Machines (SVM). These methods are evaluated against data from the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT) testbed, a scaled-down but fully operational raw water purification plant. For both methods, we first train detectors using a log generated by SWaT operating under normal conditions. Then, we evaluate the performance of both methods using a log generated by SWaT operating under 36 …

A Verification Framework For Stateful Security Protocols, Li Li, Naipeng Dong, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Guangdong Bai, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2017

A Verification Framework For Stateful Security Protocols, Li Li, Naipeng Dong, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Guangdong Bai, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A long-standing research problem is how to efficiently verify security protocols with tamper-resistant global states, especially when the global states evolve unboundedly. We propose a protocol specification framework, which facilitates explicit modeling of states and state transformations. On the basis of that, we develop an algorithm for verifying security properties of protocols with unbounded state-evolving, by tracking state transformation and checking the validity of the state-evolving traces. We prove the correctness of the verification algorithm, implement both of the specification framework and the algorithm, and evaluate our implementation using a number of stateful security protocols. The experimental results show that …

This paper highlights the relation between the shape of iron oxide (Fe3O4) particles and their magnetic sensing ability. We synthesized Fe3O4 nanocubes and nanospheres having tunable sizes via solvothermal and thermal decomposition synthesis reactions, respectively, to obtain samples in which the volumes and body diagonals/diameters were equivalent. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) data showed that the saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity of 100–225 nm cubic magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were, respectively, 1.4–3.0 and 1.1–8.4 times those of spherical MNPs on a same-volume and same-body diagonal/diameter basis. The Curie temperature for the cubic Fe3O4 MNPs for each size was also higher …

On The Finite W-Algebra For The Lie Superalgebra Q(N) In The Non-Regular Case, Elena Poletaeva, Vera Serganova

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the finite W-algebra for the queer Lie superalgebra Q(N) associated with the non-regular even nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the case when N = nl, and the corresponding nilpotent element has Jordan blocks each of size l. We prove that this finite W-algebra is isomorphic to a quotient of the super-Yangian of Q(n).

Separating Markup From Text, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal Nov 2017

Separating Markup From Text, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As more and more online versions of Humanities texts are created, it is becoming commonplace to embed elaborate formatting, for example, through the use of HTML. But this can interfere with computerized analyses of the original text. While it may seem, at first, straightforward to simply strip markup from text, this is not the reality. Many digital texts add things that appear to be legitimate content according to the markup syntax, for example, line numbers, and even apart from this issue, existing tools for stripping markup produce inconsistent results. Apart from adopting and enforcing strict conventions for adding markup to …
