Eukaryotic Microbes, Principally Fungi And Labyrinthulomycetes, Dominate Biomass On Bathypelagic Marine Snow, Alexander B. Bochdansky, Melissa A. Clouse, Gerhard J. Herndl Jan 2017

Eukaryotic Microbes, Principally Fungi And Labyrinthulomycetes, Dominate Biomass On Bathypelagic Marine Snow, Alexander B. Bochdansky, Melissa A. Clouse, Gerhard J. Herndl

OES Faculty Publications

In the bathypelagic realm of the ocean, the role of marine snow as a carbon and energy source for the deep-sea biota and as a potential hotspot of microbial diversity and activity has not received adequate attention. Here, we collected bathypelagic marine snow by gentle gravity filtration of sea water onto μm filters from similar to 1000 to 3900 m to investigate the relative distribution of eukaryotic microbes. Compared with sediment traps that select for fast-sinking particles, this method collects particles unbiased by settling velocity. While prokaryotes numerically exceeded eukaryotes on marine snow, eukaryotic microbes belonging to two very distant …

Spatial Patterns Of Sea Level Variability Associated With Natural Internal Climate Modes, Weiqing Han, Gerald A. Meehl, Detlef Stammer, Aixue Hu, Benjamin Hamlington, Jessica Kenigson, Hindumathi Palanisamy, Philip Thompson

OES Faculty Publications

Sea level rise (SLR) can exert significant stress on highly populated coastal societies and low-lying island countries around the world. Because of this, there is huge societal demand for improved decadal predictions and future projections of SLR, particularly on a local scale along coastlines. Regionally, sea level variations can deviate considerably from the global mean due to various geophysical processes. These include changes of ocean circulations, which partially can be attributed to natural, internal modes of variability in the complex Earth's climate system. Anthropogenic influence may also contribute to regional sea level variations. Separating the effects of natural climate modes …

Beyond Zar: The Use And Abuse Of Classification Statistics For Otolith Chemistry, C. M. Jones, M. Palmers, J. J. Schaffler

OES Faculty Publications

Classification method performance was evaluated using otolith chemistry of juvenile Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus when assumptions of data normality were met and were violated. Four methods were tested [linear discriminant function analysis (LDFA), quadratic discriminant function analysis (QDFA), random forest (RF) and artificial neural networks (ANN)] using computer simulation to determine their performance when variable-group means ranged from small to large and their performance under conditions of typical skewness to double the amount of skewness typically observed. Using the kappa index, the parametric methods performed best after applying appropriate data transformation, gaining 2% better performance with LDFA performing slightly better …

Principals' Perceptions Of Their Impact On School Reform In South Georgia, Lisa B. Linton Jan 2017

Principals' Perceptions Of Their Impact On School Reform In South Georgia, Lisa B. Linton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The nationwide focus on student achievement and school accountability has resulted in an effort at the federal and state levels to identify and turn around the nation’s lowest-performing schools. States and districts are desperately searching for solutions for failing schools. As a result, they are focusing on Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) models to generate changes in student achievement. Due to their ability to improve student achievement over time, these models are often chosen as a solution.

A review of the literature indicated that the involvement of the principals who are responsible for the implementation of the CSR model have not …

Producing A College Graduate Using Retention, Progression, And Graduation (Rpg) Initiatives: A University Systems’ Approach, Deborah N. Kittrell-Mikell

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Complete College Georgia (CCG) is an initiative that has the University System of Georgia institutions strategizing ways to develop plans that will increase the number of college graduates by the year 2020. Governor Nathan Deal has indicated that graduation rates need to increase from 42% to 60% within the next 7 years. With the anticipation of approximately 20% more students graduating to meet the 250,000 target, a closer look is needed at how an additional 50,000 graduates can be produced to make this goal a reality. To fulfill this goal, there needs to be an increase of approximately 7,143 …

Relationship Between School Climate And Student Achievement, Gail H. Greenway

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Increasingly public schools in the United States are finding that factors beyond curriculum and instruction impact student achievement. Much research has been conducted on the relationship between school climate and student achievement (Cohen, McCabe, Michelli, & Pickeral, 2009; Guo & Higgins-D’Alessandro, 2011). This study set out to determine if there was a correlation between school climate and student achievement in middle schools in the Central Savannah River Area Regional Educational Service Agency region in the state of Georgia. Findings from this quantitative study indicated that there is a statistically significant, positive relationship between school climate and student achievement in middle …

Stochastic Invariants For Probabilistic Termination, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic Jan 2017

Stochastic Invariants For Probabilistic Termination, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Termination is one of the basic liveness properties, and we study the termination problem for probabilistic programs with real-valued variables. Previous works focused on the qualitative problem that asks whether an input program terminates with probability 1 (almost-sure termination). A powerful approach for this qualitative problem is the notion of ranking supermartingales with respect to a given set of invariants. The quantitative problem (probabilistic termination) asks for bounds on the termination probability, and this problem has not been addressed yet. A fundamental and conceptual drawback of the existing approaches to address probabilistic termination is that even though the supermartingales consider …

Predictive Networking And Optimization For Flow-Based Networks, Michael Arnold

Theses

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used to classify neural network flows by flow size. After training the neural network was able to predict the size of a flows with 87% accuracy with a Feed Forward Neural Network. This demonstrates that flow based routers can prioritize candidate flows with a predicted large number of packets for priority insertion into hardware content-addressable memory.

Validating Petri Net Models Of Cyberattacks, Nicholas M. Christensen Jan 2017

Validating Petri Net Models Of Cyberattacks, Nicholas M. Christensen

Theses

As part of a team project modeling computer system vulnerabilities and cyberattacks, this research focused on Petri net models and validation methods for them. First, the chosen target, Metasploitable, was scanned for vulnerabilities, which were matched to Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC) entries. For a preliminary validation, the models were compared with the entries. Then a dynamic validation was applied to two models of CAPEC entries and to one model of a known backdoor, Ingreslock. Three experimental cyberattacks were compared with their respective models, giving partial validation. The results of the comparison show that this dynamic method was …

From Logology To Dramatism : Kenneth Burke And Kurt Vonnegut As Critical Companions, Eryn Johnson Jan 2017

From Logology To Dramatism : Kenneth Burke And Kurt Vonnegut As Critical Companions, Eryn Johnson

Theses

Although Kenneth Burke originally theorized language as symbolic action and Dramatism with literary analysis in mind, he remains unthought of by literary scholars. With the aim of reclaiming Dramatism for literary analysis, I grapple with Fredric Jameson’s criticisms of Burke in order to show how Dramatism maintains potential for productive literary analysis, particularly in regard to ideology. In doing so, I apply Burke’s Dramatistic method to a series of Kurt Vonnegut novels in order to investigate the similarities between Burke and Vonnegut as well as to demonstrate a fruitful literary analysis by way of Burke’s method.Though their writings differ generically, …

A Closed-Form Solution To The Aeroelastic Response Of An Elastic Plate In Axial Flow, Cory Ryan Medina Jan 2017

A Closed-Form Solution To The Aeroelastic Response Of An Elastic Plate In Axial Flow, Cory Ryan Medina

Theses

The unsteady aeroelastic response of an elastic plate immersed in an axial flow addresses many real-world applications and problems from plate flutter, bio-locomotion, to deforming airfoils. However, the analysis is challenging due to the coupling between the structure and fluid. This study presents a closed-form analytical solution to the two-way coupled aeroelastic response of a two-dimensional elastic plate in axial potential flow. The coupled model utilizes linearized beam theory and linearized unsteady thin airfoil theory. The coupled equations of motion are solved via Galerkin’s method, where closed-form solutions for the plate deformation are obtained by introducing Chebyshev series to solve …

A Study Of Optical And Physical Probe Diagnostic Techniques For Atmospheric-Pressure Plasmas, Steven J. Doyle Jan 2017

A Study Of Optical And Physical Probe Diagnostic Techniques For Atmospheric-Pressure Plasmas, Steven J. Doyle

Theses

This study investigated the application of physical probes and optical emission spectroscopy to an atmospheric microplasma jet to determine the gas temperature, electron temperature, and electron density of the plasma. Emission lines and species of interest were chosen to determine the impact of experimental configuration on the accuracy of measurements. The results showed that there is a noticeable difference in not only each of the different gas temperature determination methods, but also for individual argon spectral lines when using van der Waals broadening. The usefulness of argon spectral lines also appears to vary with electrode configurations and temperatures. Electron temperature …

Examining The Role Of Different Types Of Pressure In Math Anxiety And Math Performance, Kenneth C.E. Hammett

Theses

Math anxiety can negatively impact individuals’ performance on math tasks, especially those tasks with high working memory demands. Individuals who are highly math anxious often avoid situations that involve performing math tasks. The level of anxiety experienced by individuals may be affected by different pressure situations. The present study examined the role of different types of pressure (speed, accuracy, or combination [speed + accuracy]) in math anxiety and math performance. Results indicated that experiencing anxiety during a math task has a negative impact on math performance. Results also indicated that speed pressure might be more detrimental to math performance than …

Photodynamic Cancer Therapy A Study Of The Photochemical Properties Of Meso-Tetra (2,3,4-Trifluorophenyl) Porphyrin And Meso-Tetra (2,3,5,6-Tetrafluorophenyl) Porphyrin, Delanie L. Newberry Jan 2017

Photodynamic Cancer Therapy A Study Of The Photochemical Properties Of Meso-Tetra (2,3,4-Trifluorophenyl) Porphyrin And Meso-Tetra (2,3,5,6-Tetrafluorophenyl) Porphyrin, Delanie L. Newberry

Honors College Theses

Photodynamic therapy(PDT) is a type of cancer treatment that utilizes photosensitive molecules that absorb photons and use that energy to create cytotoxic molecules. Porphyrins are photosensitive compounds that can be used selectively at the site of cancerous tumors. Their selectivity is due to the fact the porphyrins are generally not toxic in absence of light; in the presence of light, the drug will be activated to produce the cytotoxic molecule, singlet oxygen(1O2 ). 9,10 diphenyl anthracene(DPA) was used to simulate the cancer cells and monitor how effective the porphyrin was in creating 1O2, because DPA reacts with 1O2 form diphenyl …

Helping Ourselves First: Conflict Management Strategies Of Regional International Organizations, Carolynn Nixon Jan 2017

Helping Ourselves First: Conflict Management Strategies Of Regional International Organizations, Carolynn Nixon

Honors College Theses

With the increase in ethnic conflicts since the end of the Cold War, particularly in Africa, more responsibility for conflict intervention has been placed upon regional international organizations (IOs). In this paper, I examine to what extent organizational structure influences how regional international organizations intervene in times of conflict. I argue that regional international organizations should be biased to intervene in ethnic conflict but that institutional design often constrains these organizations. Although the type of violence is a significant factor in the decision-making process, the structure of the organization makes the greatest difference. I test my expectations in the case …

Regioselective Electrolytic 5,8-Difluorination Of Quinolines, Sean P. Spurlin Jan 2017

Regioselective Electrolytic 5,8-Difluorination Of Quinolines, Sean P. Spurlin

Honors College Theses

Over the past decade, synthesis of organofluorine compounds has become a mainstream research focus. The introduction of fluorine uniquely affects the biological properties of organic molecules such as making them more bioavailable, lipophilic and metabolically stable, and possibly increase the strength of a compound’s interactions with a target protein. Approximately 30% of agrochemicals and 20% of pharmaceuticals contain fluorine, including commonly prescribed drugs such as Lipitor, Lexapro and Prozac. This work describes the development of a new methodology to incorporate fluorine into organic compounds. Our new method involves a regioselective electrochemical 5,8-difluorination of quinolines using HF:pyridine as both the reagent …

Preventing Gene Expression Through The Interruption Of Dna Binding, Olivia Perdue Jan 2017

Preventing Gene Expression Through The Interruption Of Dna Binding, Olivia Perdue

Honors College Theses

The interruption of DNA binding is a gateway to the inhibition of unregulated expression of genes which can possibly lead to illnesses such as cancer and epilepsy. The goal of this research is to produce high affinity DNA binding molecules which could act to displace the binding of natural transcription factor thus reducing the over- or under-expression of various proteins. Literature shows that the interruption of DNA binding can be completed using both organic and inorganic means, such as by means of natural transcription factors like the NF-κB protein or with metal-ligand complexes in order to bind DNA. NF-κB, a …

Universally Composable Rfid Mutual Authentication, Chunhua Su, Bagus Santoso, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Xinyi Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Universally Composable (UC) framework provides the strongest security notion for designing fully trusted cryptographic protocols, and it is very challenging on applying UC security in the design of RFID mutual authentication protocols. In this paper, we formulate the necessary conditions for achieving UC secure RFID mutual authentication protocols which can be fully trusted in arbitrary environment, and indicate the inadequacy of some existing schemes under the UC framework. We define the ideal functionality for RFID mutual authentication and propose the first UC secure RFID mutual authentication protocol based on public key encryption and certain trusted third parties which can be …

Easing Cross-Border Communication: Mobile-Mediated Communication And Its Framework, Kyungsub Choi, Young Soo Kim Jan 2017

Easing Cross-Border Communication: Mobile-Mediated Communication And Its Framework, Kyungsub Choi, Young Soo Kim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Communication is probably the most critical component of an organization engaged in a cross-border collaboration. Today’s smart devices substantially contribute to such communication. Combined with social media, mobile communication technologies are becoming the main platform for many core functions within organizations. In this paper, we identified seven media identifiable attributes: synchronicity (SYN), de-individuation and co-presence (DCP), accessibility readiness (ARD), cognizance of environment change (CEC), wearability-portability (WRB) modality-select (MDS) and visibility (VSB). These seven attributes significantly impact the course of mobile-mediated communication. We believe that development of a theoretical perspective that embraces the complexity of mobile-mediated communication is due in order …

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds in which team collaboration can be facilitated through the use of shared virtual space and mediated using avatars. This article examines the effect of task complexity on team collaboration. A puzzle game in Second Life was used as the collaborative task and task complexity was manipulated by varying the number of pieces in the puzzle. The hypotheses are that task complexity influences team trust, and team trust influences team process satisfaction in virtual team collaboration. The experimental results indicate that task complexity has significant effects on team trust and team process satisfaction, and team …

Asymptotic Residual Stress Distribution Induced By Multipass Welding Processes, P Ferro, F Berto, Nm James Jan 2017

Asymptotic Residual Stress Distribution Induced By Multipass Welding Processes, P Ferro, F Berto, Nm James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In the high cycle fatigue (HCF) regime, the fatigue strength of welded joints is influenced by residual stresses (RS) induced during welding processes. If the weld toe is modelled via a sharp V-notch, the distribution of weld toe residual stress can be shown to be asymptotic with a singularity which follows either the linear-elastic or elastic-plastic solution depending on parameters that range across material properties, specimen clamping conditions, and the welding process. For thicker plates, multipass welding is used instead of single-pass welding to reduce the heat input and hence the width of the fusion zone (FZ) and heat-affected zone …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Playing casual games is a wildly popular activity on smartphones. However, designing casual games is done by a smaller group of people, usually on desktop computers, using professional development tools. Our goal is to bring these activities closer together, in terms of who does them and how they do them. Our Gamika Technology platform is a 2D physics-based mobile game design environment. It comprises a 284-dimensional parametric design space, and poses mobile game design as the problem of navigating this space. We have built three mobile apps thus far to experiment with on-device, mixed-initiative navigation of the Gamika design space …

Nonverbal Immediacy As A Characterisation Of Social Behaviour For Human–Robot Interaction, J Kennedy, P Baxter, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

An increasing amount of research has started to explore the impact of robot social behaviour on the outcome of a goal for a human interaction partner, such as cognitive learning gains. However, it remains unclear from what principles the social behaviour for such robots should be derived. Human models are often used, but in this paper an alternative approach is proposed. First, the concept of nonverbal immediacy from the communication literature is introduced, with a focus on how it can provide a characterisation of social behaviour, and the subsequent outcomes of such behaviour. A literature review is conducted to explore …
