We report on the first measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the exclusive process of coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off a nucleus. The experiment uses the 6 GeV electron beam from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator at Jefferson Lab incident on a pressurized 4He gaseous target placed in front of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The scattered electron is detected by CLAS and the photon by a dedicated electromagnetic calorimeter at forward angles. To ensure the exclusivity of the process, a specially designed radial time projection chamber is used to detect the recoiling 4 …
Power-Law Schell-Model Sources, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Power-Law Schell-Model Sources, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Faculty Publications
A new type of Schell-model source is developed that has a spectral degree of coherence, or spatial power spectrum, which is described by a power-law function. These power-law sources generally produce cusped, or peaked far-zone spectral density patterns making them potentially useful in directed energy applications. The spectral degrees of coherence, spatial power spectra, and spatial coherence radii for power-law sources are derived and discussed. Two power-law sources are then synthesized in the laboratory using a liquid crystal spatial light modulator. The experimental spectral densities are compared to the corresponding theoretical predictions to serve as a proof of concept.

Changing Tides In Water Management: Policy Options To Encourage Greater Recycling Of Fracking Wastewater, Romany M. Webb
Changing Tides In Water Management: Policy Options To Encourage Greater Recycling Of Fracking Wastewater, Romany M. Webb
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
The U.S. has recently experienced a domestic energy renaissance, made possible by technological advances, enabling the development of unconventional oil and gas resources. Vital to this development is hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), whereby fluid is injected underground at high pressure to fracture the rock, thereby enabling the flow of oil and gas. Fracking has recently faced growing opposition with many concerned about its environmental impacts, particularly its potential to adversely affect water resources, because fracking uses vast amounts of fresh water that ends up as contaminated wastewater. Most of this wastewater is disposed of through underground injection, resulting in its permanent …

A Fix For A Thirsty World - Making Direct And Indirect Reuse Legally Possible, Heather Payne
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Reliably providing safe drinking water to the public is an essential function of state and local governments. Across the United States, government officials and public water system managers are exploring mechanisms for ensuring water security. One method for increasing public drinking water security that has garnered the attention of water officials and the public is returning treated wastewater to the drinking water supply. However, in the absence of federal regulations on water reuse, states need guidance to develop the statutory framework necessary to make potable reuse legal. This Article details the processes of direct and indirect potable reuse and reviews …
Small Can Be Inventive: The Patentability Of Nanoscale Reproductions Of Macroscale Machines, Christopher Anderson
Small Can Be Inventive: The Patentability Of Nanoscale Reproductions Of Macroscale Machines, Christopher Anderson
William & Mary Business Law Review
Nanotechnology is a thriving new field of research. If even a fraction of the excitement surrounding the field proves to be true, there will be profound benefits in many aspects of our lives. Crucial to its development, however, will be the treatment of nanotechnology with respect to patents. This field has the unique potential to replicate existing machines and devices at a billionth of their size. In light of rulings that “mere scaling” of prior inventions does not create a patentable invention, problems with patentability might arise. This Note tackles this issue, considering the patentability requirements of novelty and non-obviousness, …

Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Egf27 From The Notch1 Abruptex Region, Huimin Zhong
LSU Master's Theses
Notch proteins are transmembrane proteins and act as receptors in Notch signaling, which is related to diverse developmental diseases including cancer.1-2 The mouse Notch1 protein contains 36 tandem epidermal growth factor-like (EGF) repeats in the extracellular domain (ECD).1-2 Our research project focused on the structural study of the Abruptex region consisting of EGF24-29 in the ECD. The fact that this region is a potential competitor to a Notch ligand, because of its high glycosylation and flexibility, makes it important to solve the three-dimensional structure and investigate the glycosylation effect on the structure of the Abruptex region.3 By …
Scaling Relationships Between Cranial Morphological Features And Cranial Capacity In Modern Humans, Jacob Jesch
Scaling Relationships Between Cranial Morphological Features And Cranial Capacity In Modern Humans, Jacob Jesch
LSU Master's Theses
Certain cranial morphologies referred to here as “cranial predictor features” are known to allometrically scale with body mass at statistically significant levels. Brain size likewise is known to scale with body mass, with brain-to-body-mass ratio being expressed numerically via the encephalization quotient. The study at hand aims to demonstrate whether brain size via its skeletal proxy of cranial capacity also scales with cranial predictor features. Correlation analysis was employed on two samples of contemporary male and female modern humans, respectively, in order to determine the statistical significance and degree of association between cranial predictor features and cranial capacity, as well …
Manipulating Electromagnetic Waves With Enhanced Functionalities Using Nonlinear And Chiral Metamaterials, Sinhara Rishi Malinda Silva
Manipulating Electromagnetic Waves With Enhanced Functionalities Using Nonlinear And Chiral Metamaterials, Sinhara Rishi Malinda Silva
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metamaterials are artificial structures, which periodically arranged to exhibit fascinating electromagnetic properties, not existing in nature. A great deal of research in the field of metamaterial was conducted in a linear regime, where the electromagnetic responses are independent of the external electric or magnetic fields. Unfortunately, in linear regime the desired properties of metamaterials have only been achieved within a narrow bandwidth, around a fixed frequency. Therefore, nonlinearity is introduced into metamaterials by merging meta-atoms with well-known nonlinear materials. Nonlinear metamaterials are exploited in this dissertation to introduce and develop applications in microwave frequency with broadband responses. The nonlinearity was …
Random Walk Null Models For Time Series Data, Daryl Deford, Katherine Moore
Random Walk Null Models For Time Series Data, Daryl Deford, Katherine Moore
Dartmouth Scholarship
Permutation entropy has become a standard tool for time series analysis that exploits the temporal and ordinal relationships within data. Motivated by a Kullback–Leibler divergence interpretation of permutation entropy as divergence from white noise, we extend pattern-based methods to the setting of random walk data. We analyze random walk null models for correlated time series and describe a method for determining the corresponding ordinal pattern distributions. These null models more accurately reflect the observed pattern distributions in some economic data. This leads us to define a measure of complexity using the deviation of a time series from an associated random …
Modeling Of A Battery Storage System On A Distribution Feeder, Aaron M. Griego
Modeling Of A Battery Storage System On A Distribution Feeder, Aaron M. Griego
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Driven by the need to reduce harmful emissions and the desire to move away from our dependency on fossil fuels, we have seen a sharp increase in alternative energy research and development within the last decade. Amongst the many alternative energy sources, photovoltaics (PV) is becoming more commonplace in the power utility system.
With these new sources of renewable energy being widely adopted, there are causes for concern that power utility companies must address. One of the more present issues that have been noted is the reliability of the power being delivered; in particular with PV systems. Studies have shown …
High Power Microwave Metamaterial Based Passive And Active Devices, Hamide Seidfaraji
High Power Microwave Metamaterial Based Passive And Active Devices, Hamide Seidfaraji
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The goal of this dissertation is to design novel metamaterials for High Power Microwave devices. Metamaterials (MTM) are artificial periodic structures, which support reversed Cherenkov radiation and backward wave propagation. Microwave sources transform the kinetic energy of an electron beam into microwaves through the interaction of the electrons with a periodic slow wave structures (SWS). Here, a metamaterial (MTM) waveguide is proposed for use in a microwave oscillator instead of a SWS. The interaction of a multi-beam cathode with a set of MTM structures inside a cylindrical waveguide is studied and analyzed.
Group theory is used to design a metamaterial …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Ecosystems are under increasing stress from environmental change, including invasion by non-native species that can disrupt ecological processes and functions. Chinese tallow [Triadica sebifera (L.) Small] is a highly invasive tree species in southeastern US forests, prairies, and wetlands, and effectively managing this invasive species is a significant challenge for scientists and land managers. In this review, we synthesize the literature on invasion ecology and management of Chinese tallow. Our review suggests that the invaded range of Chinese tallow is currently limited by dispersal in many areas and by low temperatures and low soil moisture, and by high soil …
Identifying Worldviews On Corporate Sustainability: A Content Analysis Of Corporate Sustainability Reports, Nancy E. Landrum, Brian M. Ohsowski
Identifying Worldviews On Corporate Sustainability: A Content Analysis Of Corporate Sustainability Reports, Nancy E. Landrum, Brian M. Ohsowski
School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Companies commonly issue sustainability or corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. This study seeks to understand worldviews of corporate sustainability, or the corporate message conveyed regarding what sustainability or CSR is and how to enact it. Content analysis of corporate sustainability reports is used to position each company report within stages of corporate sustainability. Results reveal that there are multiple coexisting worldviews of corporate sustainability, but the most dominant worldview is focused on the business case for sustainability, a position anchored in the weak sustainability paradigm. We contend that the business case and weak sustainability advanced in corporate sustainability reports and …
Nonlinear Model-Based Control For Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, Ruzhou Yang
Nonlinear Model-Based Control For Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, Ruzhou Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a technology where skeletal muscles are externally stimulated by electrodes to help restore functionality to human limbs with motor neuron disorder. This dissertation is concerned with the model-based feedback control of the NMES quadriceps muscle group-knee joint dynamics. A class of nonlinear controllers is presented based on various levels of model structures and uncertainties. The two main control techniques used throughout this work are backstepping control and Lyapunov stability theory.
In the first control strategy, we design a model-based nonlinear control law for the system with the exactly known passive mechanical that ensures asymptotical tracking. …

Multimode Approach To Classical And Quantum Diffraction, Zhihao Xiao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
I have investigated classical diffraction of optical beams with multimode approach, which is a significant improvement upon the traditional Huygens–Fresnel principle based diffraction theory. I have also investigated quantum diffraction with multimode approach, which describes the behavior of multimode quantum state. Multimode approach to classical and quantum diffraction provides a clear mathematical formalism and is verified by numerical simulations. In addition, I present the work on superconducting qubit and oscillator with time-dependent coupling coefficient, with first order correction with finite qubit energy and schemes based on and π pulses.
Sol-Gel Niobia-Based Sorbents For The Enrichment Of Organophosphorus Compounds By Capillary Microextraction Online Coupled To High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Sheshanka Kesani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sample preparation is a key step in chemical analysis, and includes isolation of target analytes, removal of interferences, preconcentration, and/or modification of target analytes (if needed). Sample preparation is also the most time-consuming and error-prone step in the whole analytical process. Traditional sample preparation techniques involve hazardous solvents. Considering the environmental and health safety, it is desirable to reduce or eliminate organic solvents in sample preparation. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was introduced as a solvent free sample preparation technique. Capillary microextraction (CME) is one of the formats of SPME that can be easily coupled to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). …

Entropy Production And Volume Contraction In Thermostated Hamiltonian Dynamics, John D. Ramshaw
Entropy Production And Volume Contraction In Thermostated Hamiltonian Dynamics, John D. Ramshaw
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Patra et al. [Int. J. Bifurcat. Chaos 26, 1650089 (2016)] recently showed that the time-averaged rates of entropy production and phase-space volume contraction are equal for several different molecular dynamics methods used to simulate nonequilibrium steady states in Hamiltonian systems with thermostated temperature gradients. This equality is a plausible statistical analog of the second law of thermodynamics. Here we show that those two rates are identically equal in a wide class of methods in which the thermostat variables z are determined by ordinary differential equations of motion (i.e., methods of the Nosé-Hoover or integral feedback control type). This …
Hydrogeochemical Investigation Of Recharge Pathways To Intermediate And Regional Groundwater In Cañon De Valle And Technical Area 16, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Brendan W. Brady
Civil Engineering ETDs
In aquifers consisting of fractured or porous igneous rocks, as well as conglomerate and sandstone products of volcanic formations, silicate minerals actively dissolve and precipitate (Eby, 2004; Eriksson, 1985; Drever, 1982). Dissolution of hydrated volcanic glass is also known to influence the character of groundwater to which it is exposed (White et al., 1980). Hydrochemical evolution, within saturated zones of volcanic formations, is modeled here as a means to resolve the sources feeding a perched groundwater zone. By observation of solute mass balances in groundwater, together with rock chemistry, this study characterizes the chemical weathering processes active along recharge pathways …
Thinking-For-Speaking And The Efl Mind: Face-To-Face Dialogue To Talk About Vertical Space, Kunisawa
Thinking-For-Speaking And The Efl Mind: Face-To-Face Dialogue To Talk About Vertical Space, Kunisawa
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Studies of thinking-for-speaking (Slobin, 1987) and of linguistic relativity (Gumperz & Levinson, 1996) in multilinguals have been attracting more attention (Ortega, 2015). I propose the incorporation of sociocultural theory and linguistic relativity as a novel research approach in second language acquisition (SLA). Japanese learners of English go through a process in which word meaning develops from a single to binary semantic categorization as they learn to express vertical spatial operations in their second language (L2). Japanese has a nonobligatory distinction between contact and noncontact relationships when expressing vertical space (single semantic categorization), whereas English has an obligatory contrast (binary semantic …
Investigating Scalable Manufacturing Of High-Conductivity Wires And Coatings From Ultra-Long Carbon Nanotubes, Pouria Khanbolouki
Investigating Scalable Manufacturing Of High-Conductivity Wires And Coatings From Ultra-Long Carbon Nanotubes, Pouria Khanbolouki
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising candidate for next generation of electrical wirings and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials due to their exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. Wires and coatings from ultralong nanotubes that are highly crystalline, well-aligned and densely packed can achieve this goal. High-performance CNT conductors will be relatively lightweight and resistant to harsh conditions and therefore can potentially replace current conductors in many industries including aerospace, automotive, gas and oil.
This thesis investigates a new manufacturing approach, based on conventional solution coating and wire drawing methods, to fabricate high conductivity wires and coatings from ultra-long carbon nanotubes. …
