Document abstract
Sediment management is a challenge faced by reservoir managers who have several potential options, including dredging, for mitigation of storage capacity lost to sedimentation. As sediment is removed from reservoir storage, potential use of the sediment for socioeconomic or ecological benefit could potentially defray some costs of its removal. Rivers that transport a sandy sediment load will deposit the sand load along a reservoir-headwaters reach where the current of the river slackens progressively as its bed approaches and then descends below the reservoir water level. Given a rare combination of factors, a reservoir deposit of alluvial sand has …

We conduct a systematic study of galactic outflows in star-forming galaxies at z ~ 0–2 based on the absorption lines of optical spectra taken from SDSS DR7, DEEP2 DR4, and Keck (Erb et al.). We carefully make stacked spectra of homogeneous galaxy samples with similar stellar mass distributions at z ~ 0–2 and perform the multicomponent fitting of model absorption lines and stellar continua to the stacked spectra. We obtain the maximum (vmax) and central (vout) outflow velocities and estimate the mass loading factors (η), a ratio of the mass outflow rate …

Evaluation Of A Microsphere-Based Immunoassay (Mia) In Measuring Diagnostic And Prognostic Markers Of Dengue Virus Infection, Jason H. Ambrose
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Infections with dengue viruses (DENV) constitute both a global problem as well as locally in Florida. DENV comprise four distinct serotypes of single-stranded RNA viruses and belong to the family Flaviviridae. DENV are among the most medically important arboviruses in the world and cases may currently exceed 400 million per annum. Additionally, dengue established its first recorded endemic transmission cycle in the state of Florida in over a half century, first within the Florida Keys during 2009-10 followed by an unrelated outbreak in Martin County in 2013. The clinical profile of DENV infections ranges from a mild febrile illness …
Generalized D-Kaup-Newell Integrable Systems And Their Integrable Couplings And Darboux Transformations, Morgan Ashley Mcanally
Generalized D-Kaup-Newell Integrable Systems And Their Integrable Couplings And Darboux Transformations, Morgan Ashley Mcanally
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We present a new spectral problem, a generalization of the D-Kaup-Newell spectral problem, associated with the Lie algebra sl(2,R). Zero curvature equations furnish the soliton hierarchy. The trace identity produces the Hamiltonian structure for the hierarchy. Lastly, a reduction of the spectral problem is shown to have a different soliton hierarchy with a bi-Hamiltonian structure. The first major motivation of this dissertation is to present spectral problems that generate two soliton hierarchies with infinitely many commuting conservation laws and high-order symmetries, i.e., they are Liouville integrable.
We use the soliton hierarchies and a non-seimisimple matrix loop Lie algebra in order …

A Historical Assessment Of Asbestos Exposure, Abatement Methods And Containment Efficacy During Asbestos Containing Material Removal Activities At A Large Federal Facility, Daniel A. Newfang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Asbestos sampling and monitoring data, starting from 2003, located in a large federal facility’s Asbestos Air Database Management (AADM) repository will be queried and analyzed on airborne asbestos fiber concentrations generated from abatement activities of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM). Historically, concerns expressed by personnel outside of the containment areas, whether adjacent to or quite a distance from the asbestos abatement activities present operational challenges for the project manager, potential angst and uneasiness to personnel residing next to the abatement activity as well as programmatic concerns to the building/facility managers. The concerned individuals working outside the abatement …
Metal-Organic Frameworks And Mof-Derived Carbon Materials For Fuel Cell Applications, Kia Williams
Metal-Organic Frameworks And Mof-Derived Carbon Materials For Fuel Cell Applications, Kia Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rapid industrial globalization and technological development and energy consumption across the globe has significantly increased in response to mounting energy needs. The necessity for alternative and sustainable energy conversion devices has become apparent with the growth of energy utilization. In recent years, many research efforts have been made in the development of low-cost, efficient, environmentally friendly energy conversion devices. One type of energy conversion device, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), uses hydrogen oxidation at the anode and oxygen reduction at the cathode, with a solid-state proton conducting membrane between to generate energy with water as a by-product. PEMFCs use …

A Study Of The Urban Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes) Population In Baton Rouge, Louisiana Using Social Media, Ahsennur Soysal
LSU Master's Theses
Foxes are timid yet resourceful animals that are integrated into many urban environments. Because they are elusive, collecting information about the number of urban foxes, their diet and spatial distribution, their interactions with the ecological community in their urban habitat, as well as residents’ response to them, is difficult. Involving stakeholders to participate in the data collection on wildlife via citizen science on social media is one way to overcome this complication, while simultaneously engaging residents in the ecology happening around them. Therefore, we used social media as the platform to engage the public to document and map the foxes …

Statistical Results On The Performance Of An Adaptive-Threshold Radar Detector In The Presence Of Wireless Communications Interference Revision 1, David P. Zilz, Mark R. Bell
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In an article recently accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Sys-tems [1], we investigate the problem of specifying interference protection criteria for a radar sharing spectrum with wireless communications. In that paper, we first propose a statistical model for wireless communications interference based on existing interference and clutter models and supported by original simulations. Then we model the statistical effects of such interference on the detection performance of a cell-averaging adaptive-threshold radar detector. While the IEEE paper summarizes the statistical results and plots some representative figures, many additional calculations were computed than could be presented …

Flexural Stress Analysis Of Rigid Pavements Using Axi-Symmetric And Plane Strain Fem, Sawant V.A., Norazzlina M.S.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The design of pavement involves a study of soils and paving materials, their response under load for different climatic conditions. In the present study, an attempt has been made to compare stresses predicted using two finite element analyses. First analysis is based on the twodimensional plane strain assumption where as in second approach axi-symmetric condition is assumed to consider three-dimensional behavior of rigid pavement. The results are compared with flexural stresses obtained from conventional Portland Cement Association method. The computed flexural stresses obtained from axi-symmetric condition are found to be in close agreement with PCA method. Results of plane strain …

Examining The Effects Of Numbered Heads Together Upon On-Task Behavior And Quiz Scores On Employability Skills Content Of Students Identified With Intellectual Disabilities In A Post-Secondary Education Program, Adrain Christopher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Enrollment in post-secondary education (PSE) programs is vital for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) to decrease the unemployment and underemployment of this population. Traditional teaching methods (e.g., lecture and note-taking) are often used during instruction in PSE classrooms despite the challenges they present for students with ID. Researchers suggest that there are positive correalations between increased active student engagement and percentage of time on-task, as well as academic performance. To date, strategies like Numbered Heads Together (NHT), a peer-mediated instructional strategy (PMI), has shown to be a more effective strategy than the commonly used method of traditional instruction (i.e., lecture …

Linking Taxonomic Diversity And Trophic Function: A Graph-Based Theoretical Approach, Marcella M. Jurotich, Kaitlyn Dougherty, Barbara Hayford, Sally Clark
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The purpose of this study is to develop a novel, visual method in analyzing complex functional trait data in freshwater ecology. We focus on macroinvertebrates in stream ecosystems under a gradient of habitat degradation and employ a combination of taxonomic and functional trait diversity analyses. Then we use graph theory to link changes in functional trait diversity to taxonomic richness and habitat degradation. We test the hypotheses that: 1) taxonomic diversity and trophic functional trait diversity both decrease with increased habitat degradation; 2) loss of taxa leads to a decrease in trophic function as visualized using a bipartite graph; and …

Design, Synthesis, Applications Of Polymers And Dendrimers, Alekhya Nimmagadda
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
WHO has reported that antibiotic resistance is the third major cause of human death all over the globe. Recent study, has focused on the development of new antibacterial resistance drugs. Herein, we tried to synthesis a series of polymers that can mimic the HDPs. HDPs can target the bacterial cell membrane and they have less chances to develop bacterial resistance. We synthesized the amphiphilic polycarbonates that are highly selective to Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug resistant pathogens. The membrane disruption activity of these polymers was proved by fluorescence and TEM studies and the drug resistance study showed that the polymers don’t …

Design And Synthesis Of Cpg-Lytic Peptide Conjugate, Brachytherapy Beads And A Combinatorial Library Of Primary Amines Used As Potential Therapeutics In The Treatment Of Cancers, Josanne-Dee Woodroffe
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cancer remains one of the most feared diseases affecting the modern world. Second to heart disease, it is the largest cause of deaths, affecting one in three persons. Cancer cells are formed when normal, healthy cells become damage, losing their normal regulatory mechanism that control cell growth. There are many different types and progression of these cancer cells that determine the type of treatment a patient receives. The primary focus of this dissertation is to propose three studies of anticancer agents. In Chapter one, a CpG-lytic peptide conjugate was designed to target receptors on the cell membrane to concentrate the …

Work Change In Multiple Sclerosis As Motivated By The Pursuit Of Illness-Work-Life Balance: A Qualitative Study, Lavanya Vijayasingham, Uma Jogulu, Pascale Allotey
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Individuals with multiple sclerosis have a tendency to make early decisions for work change, even in reversible, episodic, or mild disease stages. To better understand how a multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis influences perceptions of work and motivations for work changes, we conducted a hermeneutic phenomenology study to explore the work lives of ten individuals with MS in Malaysia. The interpretive analysis and cumulative narratives depict an overarching change in their concept of ideal work and life aspirations and how participants make preemptive work changes to manage illness-work-life futures in subjectively meaningful ways. Discussions on their integrated pursuit of finding dynamic …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Along most of the Pacific Coast of North America, sand dunes are dominantly silicate-rich. On the California Channel Islands, however, dunes are carbonate-rich, due to high productivity offshore and a lack of dilution by silicate minerals. Older sands on the Channel Islands contain enough carbonate to be cemented into aeolianite. Several generations of carbonate aeolianites are present on the California Channel Islands and represent the northernmost Quaternary coastal aeolianites on the Pacific Coast of North America. The oldest aeolianites on the islands may date to the early Pleistocene and thus far have only been found on Santa Cruz Island. Aeolianites …

Efficient Pebble Game Algorithms Engineered For Protein Rigidity Applications, Mojtaba Nouri Bygi, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Pebble game rigidity analysis is an efficient method for extracting rigidity and flexibility information of biomolecules without performing costly molecular dynamics simulations. The standard algorithm works on a multi-graph associated to a mechanical model constructed from an arbitrary atom-bond network. Motivated by large scale protein flexibility and simulated unfolding applications, we have developed a faster and more robust variation tailored to the specificities of bio-polymers. We describe this new phased pebble game as implemented in the new version of our software Kinari-2.

Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This study was conducted in a suburban public high school, which had a connection to the local university, to measure the achievement of dual enrollment senior students using traditional hands-on (THO) cadaveric dissections compared to non-traditional (NT) virtual dissections of the human body. The outcomes of this study may assist multicultural science educators and administrators, students and parents, to understand the importance of THO cadaveric dissections compared to NT virtual dissections tools in learning gross anatomy. Also, noted is the importance of public and higher education collaboration to help bridge the science resource gaps between educational settings.

A Bayesian Method For Detecting Pairwise Associations In Compositional Data, Emma Schwager, Himel Mallick, Steffen Ventz, Curtis Huttenhower
Computer Science and Statistics Faculty Publications
Compositional data consist of vectors of proportions normalized to a constant sum from a basis of unobserved counts. The sum constraint makes inference on correlations between unconstrained features challenging due to the information loss from normalization. However, such correlations are of long-standing interest in fields including ecology. We propose a novel Bayesian framework (BAnOCC: Bayesian Analysis of Compositional Covariance) to estimate a sparse precision matrix through a LASSO prior. The resulting posterior, generated by MCMC sampling, allows uncertainty quantification of any function of the precision matrix, including the correlation matrix. We also use a first-order Taylor expansion to approximate the …
