Abi And Beyond: Exploration Of The Precursors To Trust In The Human-Automation Domain, Christopher Stephen Calhoun Jan 2017

Abi And Beyond: Exploration Of The Precursors To Trust In The Human-Automation Domain, Christopher Stephen Calhoun

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the extent to which the well-known precursors of interpersonal trust (ability, benevolence, integrity, or ABI) could be exploited, redefined, or added to when considering and developing models of trust between humans and technology. The ABI model explains only about half of the variation in interpersonal trust (Colquitt, Scott, & LePine, 2007), so two additional precursors to trust from the interpersonal and automation trust domains - transparency and humanness - were identified and studied. The experimental task involved users interacting with an automated aid (image processing and recommender system) through a simulated unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) interface to …

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

This research study explored first-generation college students’ in engineering post-graduation career intentions based on responses to a quantitative survey. In this paper, we answer the following research questions: 1) How do first-generation college students’ measures of physics, mathematics, and engineering identity constructs differ compared to non-first-generation college students? and 2) How does a physics identity influence first-generation college student’s choice of an engineering major and career aspirations? The data came from the Intersectionality of Non- normative Identities in the Cultures of Engineering (InIce) survey. InIce was completed by 2,916 first-year engineering college students enrolled in four institutions across the United …

Mercury Increases In Lake Tanganyika Since ~1850, Troy A. Bole Jan 2017

Mercury Increases In Lake Tanganyika Since ~1850, Troy A. Bole

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A series of three sediment cores were collected in Lake Tanganyika, Africa, and were analyzed for mercury concentrations. For all three cores, a decrease in mercury (Hg) levels was observed from the 1600’s (appx. 20 ng/g) until concentrations reached a minimum during the mid-1800’s (appx. 10 ng/g). The mid-1800’s marked a change from decreasing mercury levels to an increase over the following century. The core tops (circa 2006) have concentrations greater than 70 ng/g. The onset of the rise in mercury concentrations coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the mid to late 18th century. Relationships between …

Normal Subgroups Of Wreath Product 3-Groups, Ryan Gopp Jan 2017

Normal Subgroups Of Wreath Product 3-Groups, Ryan Gopp

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Consider the regular wreath product group P of Z9 with (Z3 x Z3). The problem of determining all normal subgroups of P that are contained in its base subgroup is equivalent to determining the subgroups of a certain matrix group M that are invariant under two particular endomorphisms of M. This thesis is a partial solution to the latter. We use concepts from linear algebra and group theory to find and count so-called doubly-invariant subgroups of M.

Design Of Electrode Arrays For 3d Capacitance Tomography In Planar Domains, S Taylor Jan 2017

Design Of Electrode Arrays For 3d Capacitance Tomography In Planar Domains, S Taylor

CTRC Research Publications

Electrode design is investigated for electrical capacitance tomography on a 1 mm-thick 3D planar domain. Arrays of square electrodes are located on both sides of the domain, which is filled with dielectric material. Anomalies of interest are voids in the material with low dielectric constant. Simulated tomography is conducted with various electrode patterns over a range of electrode sizes in order to compare performance. The high-aspect-ratio domain requires a large finite element mesh for simulating electric fields and for defining spatial sensitivity responses of electrode pairs. Compared to the canonical 2D pipe cross-section problem, this high-aspect-ratio system requires solving the …

Memory Properties Of Transformations Of Linear Processes And Symmetric Gini Correlation, Yongli Sang Jan 2017

Memory Properties Of Transformations Of Linear Processes And Symmetric Gini Correlation, Yongli Sang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A large class of time series processes can be modeled by linear processes, including a subset of the fractional ARIMA process. Transformation of linear processes is one of the most popular topics in univariate time-series analysis in recent years. In this dissertation, we study the memory properties of transformations of linear processes. Our results show that the transformations of short-memory time series still have short-memory and the transformation of long-memory time series may have different weaker memory parameters which depend on the power rank of the transformation. In particular, we provide the memory parameters of the FARIMA (p,d,q) processes. As …

Genetic Algorithm For University Course Timetabling Problem, Achini Kumari Herath Jan 2017

Genetic Algorithm For University Course Timetabling Problem, Achini Kumari Herath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Creating timetables for institutes which deal with transport, sport, workforce, courses, examination schedules, and healthcare scheduling is a complex problem. It is difficult and time consuming to solve due to many constraints. Depending on whether the constraints are essential or desirable they are categorized as ‘hard’ and ‘soft’, respectively. Two types of timetables, namely, course and examination are designed for academic institutes. A feasible course timetable could be described as a plan for the movement of students and staff from one classroom to another, without conflicts. Being an NP-complete problem, many attempts have been made using varying computational methods to …

Case Study On The Two Individual Paradigms Of Education In A Manufacturing Quality Course, Rustin Webster, Matthew Turner Jan 2017

Case Study On The Two Individual Paradigms Of Education In A Manufacturing Quality Course, Rustin Webster, Matthew Turner

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This article provides a review of two paradigms of education and the application of each in a manufacturing quality control course for engineering technology (ET) students. The most common paradigm of education used in quality-focused courses is teaching-centered. This traditional method has contributed to students’ perception of quality (e.g., quality control, statistical process control, total quality management), as a dry subject to learn compared to other core and/or elective courses in their plans of study. This case study describes the creation and implementation of a manufacturing quality control curriculum that is learning centered. Based on student feedback, this approach increased …

Applying Authentic Learning Through Cultivation Of The Entrepreneurial Mindset In The Engineering Classroom, Lisa Bosman, Stephanie Fernhaber

Technology Leadership and Innovation Faculty Publications

Higher education provides plenty of opportunity for theory and in many cases, even the ability to apply theory in a laboratory setting. Yet, there remains limited opportunity for students to learn by doing through participation in authentic learning experiences. The purpose of this paper is to provide one potential solution for integrating authentic learning into the engineering classroom by cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset. As entrepreneurship serves as an integral part of the economy, developing an entrepreneurial mindset through authentic learning experiences is essential for engineers. While online discussion prompts represent a useful way for educators to facilitate student learning, less …

Efficient Implementation Of Reductions On Gpu Architectures, Stephen W. Timcheck

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

With serial, or sequential, computational operations' growth rate slowing over the past few years, parallel computing has become paramount to achieve speedup. In particular, GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) can be used to program parallel applications using a SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) architecture. We studied SIMD applications constructed using the NVIDIA CUDA language and MERCATOR (Mapping EnumeRATOR for CUDA), a framework developed for streaming dataflow applications on the GPU. A type of operation commonly performed by streaming applications is reduction, a function that performs some associative operation on multiple data points such as summing a list of numbers (additive operator, …

Implementation Of Cuda Accelerated Bayesian Network Learning, Joseph Haddad Jan 2017

Implementation Of Cuda Accelerated Bayesian Network Learning, Joseph Haddad

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Bayesian networks can be used to analyze and find relationships among genetic profiles. Unfortunately, Bayesian network learning is an NP-hard algorithm and thus takes a significant amount of time to generate an output. There has been research in this area in attempts to make this algorithm quicker, such as utilizing consensus networks. Consensus networks are aggregations of many “cheaper” Bayesian networks that are used to formulate a bigger picture. These “cheaper” networks have their search spaces restricted, and thus more are required to extract the relationships among the data points.

To accomplish this, I implemented Bayesian network learning in C++, …

What Green Design Activities And Mindsets Drive Innovation And Sustainability In Student Teams?, Jeremy Faludi, Alice Agogino, Sara Beckman, Alastair Isles

Dartmouth Scholarship

What sustainable design practices can also drive innovation, and what practices do people value? Previous analysis of sustainable design methods, and the opportunism of designers generally, has suggested that design methods should actually be examined at the level of their component activities and mindsets, as each of these provides different advantages that designers could mix and match. This study performed workshops of three sustainable design methods for a total of 327 students, then surveyed students about which activities or mindsets within each design method drove innovation value, sustainability value, and any other value. The design methods tested were The Natural …

Litigation Risk Assessment: A Tool To Enhance Negotiation, Michaela Keet Jan 2017

Litigation Risk Assessment: A Tool To Enhance Negotiation, Michaela Keet

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This paper begins with a discussion of how "good" and "bad" predictions about litigation risk can affect a negotiation process. It explores how thorough predictions are often missing in the way that lawyers and clients prepare for, and navigate through, their negotiations. Drawing on a recent study of lawyers and law students, this paper summarizes a simple framework for conducting a thorough risk assessment, and then examines the way that it can be used to support the pursuit of settlement. Two conclusions emerge from the study, and in particular from the observation of how law students negotiated a hypothetical civil …

Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios, Kevin L. Ferguson Jan 2017

Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios, Kevin L. Ferguson

Publications and Research

There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. As an alternative, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored "digital surrealism" that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images. Working with the fifty-five feature-length films …

Continuous Arsine Detection Using A Peltier-Effect Cryogenic Trap To Selectively Trap Methylated Arsines, Guoying Chen, Bunhong Lai, Xuefei Mao, Tuanwei Chen, Miaomiao Chen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Hydride generation (HG) is an effective technique that eliminates interfering matrix species and enables hydride separation. Arsenic speciation analysis can be fulfilled by cryogenic trapping (CT) based on boiling points of resulting arsines using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a coolant. In this work, LN2 was replaced by the thermoelectric effect using a cryogenic trap that consisted of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) body sandwiched by two Peltier modules. After the trap was precooled, the arsines flew along a zigzag channel in the body and reached a sorbent bed of 0.2 g of 15% OV-3 on Chromosorb W-AW-DMCS imbedded near …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Missouri River system has a large water storage capacity, where baseflow plays an important role. Understanding historical baseflow characteristics with respect to climate and land use impacts is essential for effective planning and management of water resources in the Missouri River Basin (MORB). This study evaluated statistical trends in baseflow and precipitation for 99 MORB minimally disturbed watersheds during 1950–2014. Elasticity of baseflow to climate variability and agricultural land use change were quantified for the 99 studied watersheds. Baseflow was derived from daily streamflow records with a recursive digital filter method. The results showed that baseflow varied between 38 …

Metacognitive Reading And Study Strategies And Academic Achievement Of University Students With And Without A History Of Reading Difficulties, Bradley W. Bergey

Publications and Research

University students who report a history of reading difficulties have been demonstrated to have poorer word reading and reading comprehension skills than their peers; yet, without a diagnosed learning disability, these students do not have access to the same support services, potentially placing them at academic risk. This study provides a comprehensive investigation of first-year academic achievement for students with a history of reading difficulties (n = 244) compared to students with no such history (n = 603). We also examine reported use of metacognitive reading and study strategies and their relations with GPA. Results indicate that students with a …
