Modeling Of Antenna For Deep Target Hydrocarbon Exploration, Nadeem Nasir, Noorhana Yahya, Hasnah Mohd Zaid, Afza Shafie, Norhisham Hamid
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Nowadays control source electromagnetic method is used for offshore hydrocarbon exploration. Hydrocarbon detection in sea bed logging (SBL) is a very challenging task for deep target hydrocarbon reservoir. Response of electromagnetic (EM) field from marine environment is very low and it is very difficult to predict deep target reservoir below 2km from the sea floor. This work premise deals with modeling of new antenna for deep water deep target hydrocarbon exploration. Conventional and new EM antennas at 0.125Hz frequency are used in modeling for the detection of deep target hydrocarbon reservoir. The proposed area of the seabed model (40km ´ …

Multi-Dimensional Drought Risk Assessment Based On Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities And Hydro-Climatological Factors, Ali Ahmadalipour
Multi-Dimensional Drought Risk Assessment Based On Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities And Hydro-Climatological Factors, Ali Ahmadalipour
Dissertations and Theses
Drought is among the costliest natural hazards developing slowly and affecting large areas, which imposes severe consequences on society and economy. Anthropogenic climate change is expected to exacerbate drought in various regions of the globe, making its associated socioeconomic impacts more severe. Such impacts are of higher concern in Africa, which is mainly characterized by arid climate and lacking infrastructure as well as social development. Furthermore, the continent is expected to experience vast population growth, which will make it more vulnerable to the adverse effects of drought. This study provides the first comprehensive multi-dimensional assessment of drought risk across the …

Some Permanent Hearing Loss Is Missed When "Switched Ear" Passes Are Used To Determine Screening Results, Beverly G. Lim, Maria Perez-Abalo, Jillian Gerstenberger, Shauna Morales Flowers
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
A common practice in Universal Newborn Hearing Screen (UNHS) programs is rolling up non-simultaneous passing results in each ear (SW_EAR) from repeat automated screens into a bilateral pass. This study aims to provide evidence-based criteria for best practices regarding SW_EAR screens. From January 2010 to May 2013, infants with SW_EARs results were prospectively monitored by MEDNAX-Pediatrix’s nationwide UNHS program, which combine inpatient/outpatient screens utilizing automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). The tracked audiologic evaluations of 16,129 refer infants (2,334 due to SW_EAR) out of the total infant population screened (2,492,314) were analyzed retrospectively. A high proportion of hearing loss (354/2334, 15%) …

Effects Of Aspen Phenolic Glycosides On Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Susceptibility To Bacillus Thuringiensis, Gavin E. Arteel, Richard L. Lindroth
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Performance of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, on quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides, is strongly affected by foliar concentrations of phenolic glycosides. Because the microbial insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis is widely used against gypsy moths and has a mode of action similar to that of phenolic glycosIdes, we investigated the combined effects of the two toxins on gypsy moth larvae. The experimental design was a 2 x 2 factorial: two levels (0, +) of phenolicglycosides for each of two levels (0, +) of B. thuringiensis. The toxins were incorporated into artificial diets and bioassayed against first and fourth instars. …

Quantification Of Short-Term Hydropower Generation Flexibility, Hamid Bashiri Atrabi, Erfaneh Sharifi, Arturo Leon, Yong Chen, Nathan Gibson
Open Water Journal
The main goal of the current research is to quantify hydropower generation flexibility in a system of ten multi-objective reservoirs on the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS). At a given time step, the flexibility in electricity supply (F(t)) is defined as the remaining capacity after satisfying the scheduled production plan. The scheduled production plan includes the sum of future electricity demand and existing obligatory electricity sales resulting from open market sales of electricity. The time-varying flexibility metric is expressed in energy units (MWh). Estimating the flexibility helps the energy producers to address potential negative shocks in energy …

Valuation Of Flexibility For Optimal Reservoir Operation, Erfaneh Sharifi, Hamid Bashiri, Arturo Leon, Yong Chen, Nathan Gibson
Open Water Journal
This research presents a valuation study of flexibility in hydropower generation. Flexibility herein is considered as a stochastic process and is defined as the difference between the maximum hydropower energy generation capacity and the scheduled energy production plan to meet the demand and obligatory sales of electricity. To value the flexibility, this framework combines options theory and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), while this paper focuses only on real option model. Options theory is used in this research to create a framework that can value the flexibility at various levels of risk for a multi-reservoir system. A Black-Scholes-like …

Ai And Jobs: The Role Of Demand, James Bessen
Ai And Jobs: The Role Of Demand, James Bessen
Faculty Scholarship
In manufacturing, technology has sharply reduced jobs in recent decades. But before that, for over a century, employment grew, even in industries experiencing rapid technological change. What changed? Demand was highly elastic at first and then became inelastic. The effect of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs will similarly depend critically on the nature of demand. This paper presents a simple model of demand that accurately predicts the rise and fall of employment in the textile, steel, and automotive industries. This model provides a useful framework for exploring how AI is likely to affect jobs over the next 10 or 20 …
Reef Fish Assemblage Biogeography Along The Florida Reef Tract, Cory Ames
Reef Fish Assemblage Biogeography Along The Florida Reef Tract, Cory Ames
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the biogeography of reef fish assemblages is paramount to reef conservation, management, and conducting appropriate population survey designs. Reef fish assemblages are a multispecies complex of reef-associated fish and are shaped by multiple environmental and biological factors (e.g. temperature, depth, benthic habitat, and topographic relief), which determine the species constituents residing in an area. Assemblages typically change with latitude where the number of families, genera, and/or densities of species specific to warmer climates decrease poleward into colder climate regimes. The Florida Reef Tract (FRT) extends for 595 km from the Dry Tortugas in the south-west to Martin County in …

BACKGROUND: While age and the APOE ε4 allele are major risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD), a small percentage of individuals with these risk factors exhibit AD resilience by living well beyond 75 years of age without any clinical symptoms of cognitive decline.
METHODS: We used over 200 "AD resilient" individuals and an innovative, pedigree-based approach to identify genetic variants that segregate with AD resilience. First, we performed linkage analyses in pedigrees with resilient individuals and a statistical excess of AD deaths. Second, we used whole genome sequences to identify candidate SNPs in significant linkage regions. Third, we replicated SNPs …

A Geophysical Investigation Of Stratigraphy And Structure On St. Catherines Island, Georgia, Anne M. Delua
Honors College Theses
Geophysical tools were used to investigate potential structural and stratigraphic pathways of the salt water intrusion that is affecting the surficial aquifer on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical tool that uses electromagnetic waves to view the subsurface. GPR is used for a variety of applications stratigraphically, biologically, and anthropogenically. GPR electromagnetic waves react to changes in density and composition and type and percentage of pore fluids in sediment and rock. GPR waves also react to interfaces including fractures and faults. GPR waves exhibit attenuation and decreased return signal in materials such as clay. Fresh …

Infinite-Dimensional Measure Spaces And Frame Analysis, Palle Jorgensen, Myung-Sin Song
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
We study certain infinite-dimensional probability measures in connection with frame analysis. Earlier work on frame-measures has so far focused on the case of finite-dimensional frames. We point out that there are good reasons for a sharp distinction between stochastic analysis involving frames in finite vs. infinite dimensions. For the case of infinite-dimensional Hilbert space ℋ, we study three cases of measures. We first show that, for ℋ infinite dimensional, one must resort to infinite dimensional measure spaces which properly contain ℋ. The three cases we consider are: (i) Gaussian frame measures, (ii) Markov path-space measures, and (iii) determinantal measures.

Beclin-1 (BECN1) is an essential component of macroautophagy. This process is a highly conserved survival mechanism that recycles damaged cellular components or pathogens by encasing them in a bilayer vesicle that fuses with a lysosome to allow degradation of the vesicular contents. Mutations or altered expression profiles of BECN1 have been linked to various cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Viruses, including HIV and herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), are also known to specifically target BECN1 as a means of evading host defense mechanisms. Autophagy is regulated by the interaction between BECN1 and Bcl-2, a pro-survival protein in the apoptotic pathway that …

Substituted Hydroxylamines As Nitrogen Transfer Reagents: Direct Synthetic Pathways To Structurally Rich Heteroatomic Scaffolds, Dylan John Quinn
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen is found in virtually all valuable chemical compounds. The abundance of atmospheric nitrogen however, is rendered inaccessible because of the strong N-N triple bond, ultimately preventing its practical utilization in synthetic organic synthesis. The development of powerful nitrogen transfer reagents, such as substituted hydroxylamine derivatives, have played an important role in the introduction of nitrogen into valuable chemical scaffolding.
Herein is reported the methodological development of synthetic nitrogen placement into a range of valuable heteroatomic compounds. This work shows that O-Substituted Hydroxylamine can be used to furnish small heteroatomic compounds, particularly nitriles. Whereas, N-Substituted Hydroxylamine can be employed to …

Investigation Of Sediment Ridges Using Bathymetry And Backscatter Near Clearwater, Florida, Lewis Stewart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Changes in sediment morphology on the West Florida Shelf is investigated over a 14-year time period using multibeam bathymetry and backscatter in water depths between 10 m and 20 m, off the coast of Indian Rocks Beach, Pinellas County, Florida. Bathymetric surveys collected in 2002 (Kongsberg EM 3000 at 300 kHz) and 2016 (Reson 7125 at 400 kHz) were processed using CARIS Hips and Sips to create bathymetric maps and backscatter images. These data were then interpreted and compared in order to test hypotheses and answer questions related to sediment migration and sediment volume change.
The following questions prompted this …

The Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst (GRB) that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by the FermiGamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM), and the Anti-Coincidence Shield for the Spectrometer for the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory(INTEGRAL), indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the GeV–EeV energy range using the Antares, IceCube, and Pierre Auger Observatories. …

Layer-Parallel-Shortening Strain: A Key To The Sevier-Laramide Deformational Sequence In The Tendoy Range, Southwestern Montana, Christopher Dale Loyacano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Layer-parallel-shortening (LPS) strain records the first strain experienced by rocks during tectonic events. LPS indicators preserved in vertical to overturned fold limbs along the leading edge of the fold-thrust belt in southwestern Montana are used to determine which deformation came first there: Sevier or Laramide. LPS-strain was analyzed for 22 samples collected in the Dixon Mountain area from different beds containing ooids, Pentacrinus, or brachiopods within a 580-meter stratigraphic interval. Field orientations of strain ellipses were then adjusted for: 1) trend and plunge of fold axes; 2) rotation of thrust sheets relative to the trend of the Sevier-emplaced, overturned Deadwood …

Irlafarc! Surveying The Language Of Legal Writing, Terrill Pollman, Judith M. Stinson
Maine Law Review
Language, like law, is a living thing. It grows and changes. It both reflects and shapes the communities that use it. The language of the community of legal writing professors demonstrates this process. Legal writing professors, who stand at the heart of an emerging discipline in the legal academy, are creating new terms, or neologisms, as they struggle to articulate principles of legal analysis, organizational paradigms conventional to legal writing, and other legal writing concepts. This new vocabulary can be both beneficial and detrimental. It can be beneficial because it expands the substance of an emerging discipline. It also can …

“I Didn’T Know Anything About It”: Critical Pedagogy, Cultural Literacy, And (Missed?) Opportunities For Praxis, Erin N. Cue, Zachary A. Casey
i.e.: inquiry in education
This study seeks to theorize and contextualize what happened in an undergraduate senior capstone course focusing on cultural literacy and critical pedagogy. Through our analysis and critical dialogue we came to recognize that while each cultural literacy circle reported positive outcomes, and positive feelings from group members about how they felt participating in the circles, only one group took action in a material way meant to explicitly combat oppression. Nearly every group talked about oppression and the struggle for justice, but ultimately their work remained at the level of discourse. They thought about oppression, talked and read about oppression, but …
