Incorporating Confucius And Ancient China Into A Rhetorical Theory Course, Sara A. M. Drury Oct 2017

Incorporating Confucius And Ancient China Into A Rhetorical Theory Course, Sara A. M. Drury

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

In our globalized world, students of communication benefit from experiencing diverse cultures and perspectives throughout the curriculum. One way to encourage twenty-first century global learning is to infuse the study of Chinese discourse into rhetorical theory courses. This essay first provides a rationale for the importance of comparative rhetoric and a review of relevant literature on ancient Chinese rhetoric. Then, the essay details a three-week module on ancient Chinese rhetoric with readings and activities, and an appraisal of the activity, with the goal of demonstrating the necessity and feasibility of introducing undergraduate students to globalized rhetorical studies.

An Exploratory Study Of Mobile Messaging Preferences By Age: Middle-Aged And Older Adults Compared To Younger Adults, Alexis Kuerbis, Katherine Van Stolk-Cooke, Frederick Muench

Publications and Research

Introduction: Mobile technologies, such as short message service or text messaging, can be an important way to reach individuals with medical and behavioral health problems who are homebound or geographically isolated. Optimally tailoring messages in short message service interventions according to preferences can enhance engagement and positive health outcomes; however, little is known about the messaging preferences of middle-aged and older adults.

Methods: Utilizing secondary data, global messaging preferences were examined to inform the development of short message service interventions for adults of all ages. Two hundred and seventy-seven adults were recruited through an online labor market. They completed an …

Non-Affirmative Theory Of Education As A Foundation For Curriculum Studies, Didaktik And Educational Leadership, Michael Uljens, Rose Ylimaki Oct 2017

Non-Affirmative Theory Of Education As A Foundation For Curriculum Studies, Didaktik And Educational Leadership, Michael Uljens, Rose Ylimaki

Faculty Publications

This chapter presents non-affirmative theory of education as the foundation for a new research program in education, allowing us to bridge educational leadership, curriculum studies and Didaktik. We demonstrate the strengths of this framework by analyzing literature from educational leadership and curriculum theory/didaktik. In contrast to both socialization-oriented explanations locating curriculum and leadership within existing society, and transformation-oriented models viewing education as revolutionary or super-ordinate to society, non-affirmative theory explains the relation between education and politics, economy and culture, respectively, as non-hierarchical. Here critical deliberation and discursive practices mediate between politics, culture, economy and education, driven by individual agency in …

Curriculum Theory, Didaktik, And Educational Leadership: Reflections On The Foundations Of The Research Program, Rose Ylimaki, Michael Uljens Oct 2017

Curriculum Theory, Didaktik, And Educational Leadership: Reflections On The Foundations Of The Research Program, Rose Ylimaki, Michael Uljens

Faculty Publications

This chapter provides concluding reflections and next steps in a research program bridging curriculum theory/Didaktik and educational leadership studies. The bridging utilizes non-affirmative education theory as the theoretical ground. To begin, we present a retrospective discussion of the project. We then relate the approach to the contributions included in this volume, especially focusing on the normativity of education theories, and pointing at how non-affirmative education theory corresponds to deliberation oriented democratic-hermeneutic initiatives. Non-affirmative education theory identifies both leadership, teaching and curriculum work as critical deliberation based professional activities driven by subjects, individual agency in historically developed cultural and societal institutions …

Exploring The Canons Of Rhetoric Through Phil Davison’S Campaign Stump Speech, Joshua N. Westwick, Kelli J. Chromey Oct 2017

Exploring The Canons Of Rhetoric Through Phil Davison’S Campaign Stump Speech, Joshua N. Westwick, Kelli J. Chromey

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

A common learning objective of many communication courses centers on speech criticism and evaluation, and the classic canons of rhetoric (invention, arrangement, style, memory and delivery of the speaker) have been used to help communication students achieve these learning outcomes. This teaching activity provides a creative and meaningful way to explore the canons of rhetoric—through assigning students to perform critical evaluation of a popularized YouTube video, the campaign stump speech of Stark County, Ohio, treasurer candidate Phil Davison. Students have responded favorably to the activity and demonstrated an increased awareness and understanding of the rhetorical canons and their use in …

The History Of The Name Panorpa Linnaeus (Mecoptera), H. D. Cameron Oct 2017

The History Of The Name Panorpa Linnaeus (Mecoptera), H. D. Cameron

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Attempts to understand the origin of Linnaeus' name for the scorpionfly Panorpa have come to nought for a very good reason. The word does not mean anything at all. It is an interesting example of the futility of looking up names in a Latin or Greek dictionary to find their meaning when the history of the word is at all complicated. The word Panorpa is born of a series of taxonomic, philological, grammatical, and (perhaps) typographical errors which can be sorted out by a survey of the pre-Linnaean history of the word and of the insect. In order to …

Textualism And The Problem Of Scrivener's Error, John David Ohlendorf Oct 2017

Textualism And The Problem Of Scrivener's Error, John David Ohlendorf

Maine Law Review

Scrivener’s errors make easy prey for the gentle comedy of the bench and bar, much in the way that typographical errors in billboards, newspaper headlines, and church bulletins form an endless source of humor for late night talk show hosts. But theorists of legal interpretation have long seen that scrivener’s errors pose a more serious problem. The doctrine surrounding scrivener’s error stands considered as something of a cousin to the absurdity doctrine, which has roots extending to the earliest days of the American Republic. More recently, the post-legal-process revival of formalist approaches to statutory interpretation on the bench, and their …

Law In Books And Law In Action: The Problem Of Legal Change, Jean-Louis Halperin Oct 2017

Law In Books And Law In Action: The Problem Of Legal Change, Jean-Louis Halperin

Maine Law Review

One hundred years ago, Roscoe Pound wrote his famous article, “Law in Books and Law in Action.” Considered an important step toward American legal realism, today this article is invoked more for its title than its content. I would argue that in the article, Pound did not clearly distinguish between two separate situations: (1) the departure of decisions of courts from statements of statutory (or constitutional) law, and (2) the discrepancy between doctrine in books and empirical data about law. This second observation has fed various strands of jurisprudence, if often only through the repetition of the well-quoted formula. It …

The Pedagogical Impact Of Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of English Language Learners: A Phenomenological Study, Rachael L. Hoffert Oct 2017

The Pedagogical Impact Of Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of English Language Learners: A Phenomenological Study, Rachael L. Hoffert

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The population of English language learners (ELLs) continues to increase within public schools across the United States; this includes a shift from traditional urban settings to extensive growth within suburban and rural school districts in the Midwest. Although there is research regarding how ELLs are perceived in the school structure, it is not known how middle school teachers’ perceptions of ELLs within a Midwestern rural and suburban middle school setting influence the pedagogical practices utilized within the general education classroom. This hermeneutic phenomenological study examined how teachers within a Midwestern middle school serving perceived ELLs and how those perceptions influenced …

The Black Hole Problem In Commercial Boilerplate, Stephen J. Choi, Mitu Gulati, Robert E. Scott Oct 2017

The Black Hole Problem In Commercial Boilerplate, Stephen J. Choi, Mitu Gulati, Robert E. Scott

Duke Law Journal

Rote use of a standard-form contract term can erode its meaning, a phenomenon made worse when the process of encrustation introduces various formulations of the term. When they occur, rote usage and encrustation weaken the communicative properties of boilerplate terms, leading some terms to lose much, if not all, meaning. In theory, if a clause is emptied of meaning, it can create a contractual black hole in which, as the term loses meaning, random variations in language appear and persist. What, then, are the consequences if parties exploit these variations in language by successfully advancing an interpretation the market disavows? …

Right Under Their Noses: Helping Patrons Identify The Resources At Their Fingertips, Jessica Garner, Fred W. Smith, Jessica Williams, Jermaine Bryant

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

A concern of all academic Interlibrary Loan Departments is having faculty/ staff & students request materials already owned by their home library. Jessica Garner, Jessica Williams, Fred Smith, and Jermaine Bryant conducted a qualitative research study with IRB approval to explore this concern. In this session, the presenters will describe how data suggest a more streamlined approach to redirecting searches originating in the library for outside sources to assets already physically (or electronically) stored in the library.

The N170 Erp Component Differs In Laterality, Distribution, And Association With Continuous Reading Measures For Deaf And Hearing Readers, Karen Emmorey, Katherine J. Midgley, Casey B. Kohen, Zed Sevcikova Sehyr, Phillipp J. Holcomb Oct 2017

The N170 Erp Component Differs In Laterality, Distribution, And Association With Continuous Reading Measures For Deaf And Hearing Readers, Karen Emmorey, Katherine J. Midgley, Casey B. Kohen, Zed Sevcikova Sehyr, Phillipp J. Holcomb

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

The temporo-occipitally distributed N170 ERP component is hypothesized to reflect print-tuning in skilled readers. This study investigated whether skilled deaf and hearing readers (matched on reading ability, but not phonological awareness) exhibit similar N170 patterns, given their distinct experiences learning to read. Thirty-two deaf and 32 hearing adults viewed words and symbol strings in a familiarity judgment task. In the N170 epoch (120–240 ms) hearing readers produced greater negativity for words than symbols at left hemisphere (LH) temporo-parietal and occipital sites, while deaf readers only showed this asymmetry at occipital sites. Linear mixed effects regression was used to examine the …

Assistant Word Choice Training, Google Inc. Oct 2017

Assistant Word Choice Training, Google Inc.

Defensive Publications Series

A virtual, intelligent, or computational assistant (e.g., also referred to simply as an “assistant”) is described that is configured to adapt to a user’s word choices when providing output to the user. For a variety of reasons (e.g., regional differences, time progression, cultural differences, etc.) users may select different words and phrases for similar meanings. For instance, some users may say water fountain while other users may say bubbler. While users may understand that multiple terms refer to the same object (e.g., have the same or similar meaning), the use of a different term may feel unnatural and awkward to …

Vowel Formant Dispersion Reflects Severity Of Apraxia Of Speech, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Elena Galkina, Alexandra Basilakos, Julius Fridriksson Oct 2017

Vowel Formant Dispersion Reflects Severity Of Apraxia Of Speech, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Elena Galkina, Alexandra Basilakos, Julius Fridriksson

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Apraxia of Speech (AOS) has been associated with deviations in consonantal voice onset time (VOT), but studies of vowel acoustics have yielded conflicting results. However, a speech motor planning disorder that is not bound by phonological categories is expected to affect vowel as well as consonant articulations.

Aims: We measured consonant VOTs and vowel formants produced by a large sample of stroke survivors, and assessed to what extent these variables and their dispersion are predictive of AOS presence and severity, based on a scale that uses clinical observations to rate gradient presence of AOS, aphasia, and dysarthria. …

Digital Storytelling In Research: A Systematic Review, Adele De Jager, Andrea Fogarty, Anna Tewson, Caroline Lenette, Katherine M. Boydell Oct 2017

Digital Storytelling In Research: A Systematic Review, Adele De Jager, Andrea Fogarty, Anna Tewson, Caroline Lenette, Katherine M. Boydell

The Qualitative Report

Digital storytelling refers to a 2 to 5 minute audio-visual clip combining photographs, voice-over narration, and other audio (Lambert, 2009) originally applied for community development, artistic and therapeutic purposes, and more recently adapted as an arts-based research method. To date, no systematic review of the use of digital storytelling in a research capacity, to generate information about a phenomenon has been conducted. Accordingly, our aim was to provide a systematic review of digital storytelling in research. The review identified 25 articles representing 23 discrete studies that met inclusion criteria. A thematic analysis of results indicated that digital storytelling in research …

Development Of The Daily Living Questionnaire (Dlq): A Factor Analysis Study, Sara Rosenblum, Naomi Josman, Joan Toglia

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Performance of daily activities and participation in life events involves higher-level cognitive abilities. The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report scale for detecting everyday difficulties in activities/participation tied with higher-level cognitive deficiency and to examine its reliability and validity.

Method: The Daily Living Questionnaire’s (DLQ) content and face validity were established. Internal consistency following an exploratory factor analysis, as well as construct validity, were initiated with a convenience sample of 194 healthy adults, aged 18 to 85 years, and 34 adults diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Results: The four factors received in Part A, activities and …
