The Intersection Of Anger Management Counseling And Embodiment In Dance/Movement Therapy, Maria Parise Dec 2017

The Intersection Of Anger Management Counseling And Embodiment In Dance/Movement Therapy, Maria Parise

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this research study was to explore how the embodiment of aspects of anger may integrate within anger management counseling. Through this research, the first step was taken in exploring the physical expression of anger as an intervention tool in anger management counseling. A personal understanding of anger expression and management was established which may be utilized in future dance/movement therapy (DMT) sessions. This study was guided by multiple research questions: How might the embodiment of anger integrate with anger management counseling? How might the sensations, images, feelings, and thoughts experienced in anger management sessions lead to an …

“In A Position I See Myself In:” (Re)Positioning Identities And Culturally-Responsive Pedagogies, Noah Asher Golden Dec 2017

“In A Position I See Myself In:” (Re)Positioning Identities And Culturally-Responsive Pedagogies, Noah Asher Golden

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Culturally-responsive pedagogies require moving beyond blanket assumptions about learners to focus deeply on local meaning-makings. This narrative analysis case study examines the ways a 20-year-old African American man challenges the negative educational identity with which he is forced to contend as he navigates a large and complex urban public school system. The ways in which Jamahl, a seeker of a High School Equivalency, refuses interpellation as an uneducated learner destined to be “nothin'” provides insight as to how formal education might be more responsive to learners' negotiation of deficiency discourses. Embracing agency, specifically through awareness of the ways Jamahl employs …

This capstone paper aims to explore how South Koreans, who have graduated public high school within the past seven years (from 2010 to 2017) view Japan and Japanese people, and what (if at all) information concerning Japan and Japanese people was established and received during their presence in the public school system. Through a brief analysis into the history and intricate relationship between Korea and Japan, introduction into hidden curriculum and its significance in this context, as well as ten personal interviews with South Korean graduates who fit the criteria for this research, this capstone paper offers a distinctive insight …

Post-Representational Presence: Disruptive Actions & Visibility Politics In New Media, Christian Hendricks Dec 2017

Post-Representational Presence: Disruptive Actions & Visibility Politics In New Media, Christian Hendricks

Theses and Dissertations

This text is a written component to a master’s thesis in the fine arts. It is a research-intensive text that conventionally examines contemporary conditions of politics and modes of representation, and analyzes the most innovative artists and visual producers working in these areas. However, the text also includes exercise modules with “challenges” for the reader, similar to a textbook. In the modules, the examples provided are works of my own. I also include text, images, and documentation of my own work from my MFA thesis exhibition.

The Nets Of Style: Shaping Modernist Literary Narrative, Kelly Lynn Oman Dec 2017

The Nets Of Style: Shaping Modernist Literary Narrative, Kelly Lynn Oman

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Literary modernism is often defined by a stylistic distinctiveness generated by experiments in subject and form. Given that these experiments necessarily break with convention, how are we to make sense of this style without those conventions to guide us? In “The Nets of Style: Shaping Modernist Literary Narrative,” I reveal how critical definitions of modernist style often rely on the individualist poses struck and critical pronouncements made by modernists themselves. My research is situated in a body of work in modernist studies that argue, as Paul Sheehan does in Modernism and the Aesthetics of Violence, that “modernism seeks to transform …

Constitutional Reform: Decolonization In The Comoros Islads, Nicholas A. Daou Dec 2017

Constitutional Reform: Decolonization In The Comoros Islads, Nicholas A. Daou

Capstone Collection

Since its independence in 1975 the Union of Comoros has seen a great deal of political upheaval as a part of its decolonization process. This study examines the period between 1975 and 2001 with special emphasis on the 1997 Secession Crisis and the methods by which that crisis was resolved. The literature review is composed of predominantly native Comorian authors, supplemented by several French authors and information from international organizations. The events and literature are also examined through the lenses of the psychoanalytical group identity theory of Vamik Volkan and the Conflict Transformation work of Johan Galtung. Data regarding attitudes …

Persuasive Kinship: Human–Plant Relations In Southwest Amazonia, Fabiana Maizza Dec 2017

Persuasive Kinship: Human–Plant Relations In Southwest Amazonia, Fabiana Maizza

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Based on my ethnographic research with the Jarawara people, an indigenous society in the Southwest Amazonia, the article explores the idea of thinking kinship as persuasion. Among the Jarawara, children can have more than one father, which is well known in Americanist literature, but there would exist as well an original practice what we could call "multi-maternity". I also observe that the Jarawara can have diverse parental relations - some of their children are human, while others are plants. This occurs in a system of raising (nayana) in which children and plants are raised by a father and/or a mother …

Mentalization In Counseling Processes, Matthew J. Swartzentruber Dec 2017

Mentalization In Counseling Processes, Matthew J. Swartzentruber

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

The purpose of this literature review is to demonstrate the profound influences and numerous applications the concept of mentalization has within counseling processes. The skill of mentalizing extends across theoretical orientations within existing counseling frameworks and has been suggested to be a core factor within the counseling process (Allen, Fonagy, & Bateman, 2008). Mentalizing capacities have been linked to positive therapeutic alliances (Markowitz & Milrod, 2011), positive client outcomes (Bernbach, 2002; Bouchard et al., 2008; Fonagy & Target, 1996; Karlsson & Kermott, 2006; Levy et. al., 2006; Meehan, Levy, Reynoso, Hill, & Clarkin, 2009), and counselor effectiveness (Cologon, 2013); and …

Canela Shamanism: Shamans’ Accounts, “Journeying,” And Delimitation Of Shamanic Terms, William H. Crocker Dec 2017

Canela Shamanism: Shamans’ Accounts, “Journeying,” And Delimitation Of Shamanic Terms, William H. Crocker

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this article I recount the stories of various shamans I have worked with throughout many decades of fieldwork among the Ramkokamekra-Canela (Eastern Timbira) of central Maranhão state, Brazil. Along with their narratives, I provide ethnographic context in order to address the following questions: (1) Who is a shaman? (2) What is shamanism? Is shamanism better understood (3) as a process or a method that is carried out to achieve certain ends, or is it better understood (4) as a particular set of beliefs associated with particular cultures? Additionally, (5) are altered or shamanic states of consciousness found in Canela …

Matthew Fitt, But N Ben A-Go-Go (2000), Caroline Mccracken-Flesher

Studies in Scottish Literature

Puts forward Fitt's "challenging, haunting novel," "a dystopian, coming of age, scientific-detective-police procedural-medical romance," written in "lyrical/acerbic Scots," as "thrawn, readable, un-put-down-able," and a "darkly plotted challenge to family dynamics."

Gavin Douglas's Aeneados: Caxton's English And 'Our Scottis Langage', Jacquelyn Hendricks Dec 2017

Gavin Douglas's Aeneados: Caxton's English And 'Our Scottis Langage', Jacquelyn Hendricks

Studies in Scottish Literature

Discusses the Scots poet Gavin Douglas's translation of Virgil's Aeneid into Scots, and Douglas's treatment of his predecessor William Caxton's translation of Virgil into English, arguing that Douglas associates Caxton's English with a barbaric world of monsters and beasts, in contrast to Scots which is seen as expressing civilized classical values, and that Douglas's translation, by enhancing and showcasing the literary power of Scots for a wider audience, successfully resisted for at least forty years the linguistic standardization initiated by the burgeoning print industry.

Beattie's The Minstrel: A Missing Link In Scottish Poetry, Ian C. Robertson Dec 2017

Beattie's The Minstrel: A Missing Link In Scottish Poetry, Ian C. Robertson

Studies in Scottish Literature

Discusses the Scottish poet James Beattie's poetry, especially his major work The Minstrel, and his shorter poem in Scots, "To Mr Alexander Ross," in terms of his connections, role and influence within the Scottish poetry and culture of the mid- to late 18th century, arguing that without taking into account Beattie's complex relationship to Scottish, and specifically Aberdonian, culture, the development of 18th century Scottish poetry between Ramsay and Burns cannot be adequately understood.

Anglo And Hispanic Vowel Variation In New Mexican English, Susan Brumbaugh

Linguistics ETDs

This study examines vowel formant differences between English speakers in New Mexico that self-identify as Anglo versus those that self-identify as Hispanic. Audio recordings were made of 16 New Mexicans reading short stories and carrier phases with embedded target words. F1 and F2 measurements were compared at the 50% point for monophthongs and at the 20% and 80% points for diphthongs. Mixed effects models assessed statistical significance of ethnicity, gender, and interactional effects on vowel formants and trajectory length.

All speakers showed a near-complete overlap of BOT and BOUGHT tokens, supporting a merger. Hispanic men and women patterned together to …

Teaching Efl/Esl College-Level Learners Through Current Global Topics: Integrated Lessons For Efl/Esl Teachers, Chaiyeon Sylvia Lee

Master's Projects and Capstones

The importance of educating effective English users competent in communicating and interacting in a variety of social settings is highlighted in today’s highly globalized world. Being able to understand and discuss complex global topics related to current cultural, social, and business issues and events has become an integral skill of English learners to achieve greater international connectivity. Unfortunately, many EFL/ESL college-level students, specifically Korean EFL students, do not seem to have sufficient preparation to build English communicative competence and cultural awareness necessary to cope with various situations in which they need to communicate meaningfully and purposefully as effective English users. …

An Examination Of Household Food Security’S Measurement, Report And Experience By Gender, Jaime Foster Dec 2017

An Examination Of Household Food Security’S Measurement, Report And Experience By Gender, Jaime Foster

Doctoral Dissertations

Food insecurity, defined as the inability to access sufficient food for an active, healthy life, affects 14.3 percent of United States. Food Security (FS) has been measured annually using the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Household Food Security Module (HFSM) since the 1990s; however, responses to this self-report measure may vary by household member. Thus, this study aims to 1) determine how gender is related to differences in interpretation and report of FS using the HFSM; 2) determine if gender is related to interpretation of terms relevant to FS measurement, and; 3) pilot test a qualitative technique novel to the …

Practical English For Chinese Newcomers: A Handbook For Teachers, Li Li Dec 2017

Practical English For Chinese Newcomers: A Handbook For Teachers, Li Li

Master's Projects and Capstones

When new Chinese immigrants first arrive in the United States, they face challenges related to both language barriers and acculturative stress. Language barriers and acculturative stress mutually reinforce each other. Furthermore, they significantly inconvenience new Chinese immigrants in terms of living, working and studying. Incorporating cultural information into English as a second language (ESL) teaching is thus important from a sociocultural and intercultural perspective. Therefore, the underlying purposes of this project is to enhance English communicative competence and American cultural adaptation among new Chinese immigrants by immersing them in authentic, situational, and practical communication in the United States. The project …

The Sioux's Suits: Global Law And The Dakota Access Pipeline, Stephen Young Dec 2017

The Sioux's Suits: Global Law And The Dakota Access Pipeline, Stephen Young

American Indian Law Journal

The Sioux Tribe’s lawsuits and protests against the Dakota Access Pipelines (DAPL) received an incredible amount of international attention in ways that many Indigenous peoples’ protests have not. This article argues that attention exists because the Sioux Tribe has been at the epicenter of the Indigenous peoples’ rights movement in international law. Accordingly, they have invoked or claimed international human rights—particularly free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC)— to complicate, and perhaps destabilize, the DAPL’s development. However, the importance of their activism is not merely in claiming human rights.

Based upon a global map of law that involves multiple and overlapping …

A Hell Of A Complex: The Miscarriages Of The Federal Hydropower Licensing Regime, Derek Red Arrow Frank Dec 2017

A Hell Of A Complex: The Miscarriages Of The Federal Hydropower Licensing Regime, Derek Red Arrow Frank

American Indian Law Journal

What you are about to read is an illustration of systemic racism. Systemic racism is the current effects of statutes and policies developed through a singular and racially-charged narrative. The current hydropower relicensing regime fails to acknowledge the overarching Treaty-reserved rights of American Indian tribes while statutorily granting state and federal authorities the power to prescribe mandatory conditions on hydropower projects. This fact remains constant whether the hydropower project is within or outside a tribe’s reservation or aboriginal territory. Specifically, the Hells Canyon Complex, which rests along the Snake River, has had and continues to have enormous impacts on fisheries …

Teaching Reduced Forms: A Curriculum Guide For Junior High English Language Teachers Using Digital Technology Based Activities And Classroom Games, Dion Sanchez Dec 2017

Teaching Reduced Forms: A Curriculum Guide For Junior High English Language Teachers Using Digital Technology Based Activities And Classroom Games, Dion Sanchez

Master's Projects and Capstones

Japanese English language students often struggle with listening comprehension when communicating with native English speakers due to the use of reduced forms. Native speakers use contractions, reductions, elisions, and linking in casual speech which sounds unfamiliar to students who have not been exposed to reduced forms in their classrooms. In order to facilitate improved listening skills and help students with speaking fluency, reduced forms ought to be taught in English classrooms.

While the use of reduced forms by native English speakers has been recognized as a problem for English students, incorporating reduced forms instruction into an English curriculum involves overcoming …

Creating An Energetic Classroom: A Handbook For Esl Teachers, Lusha Sha Dec 2017

Creating An Energetic Classroom: A Handbook For Esl Teachers, Lusha Sha

Master's Projects and Capstones

Low classroom energy is a common problem in English language teaching. This field project discusses the problematic low-energy classroom from both the student side and the instructor side. The first aspect explored is the silence of students. Because speech shows the process of language acquisition and is also the precondition of language acquisition, it is crucial to discover and understand the reasons for some students’ unwillingness to speak (Baran-Lucarz, 2014). The project explains the willingness to communicate and the cultural variations in learning. The second aspect of a low-energy classroom in this project is the ESL teacher lack of enthusiasm. …

A Comparison Of Two Treatment Approaches For Agrammatic Broca's Aphasia: Script Therapy Vs. Verb Network Strengthening Treatment, Maureen Costello-Yacono

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background/Introduction: Individuals with agrammatic Broca’s aphasia frequently are treated at single word level, verb priming, or simple sentence structure treatments. In this study, an impairment specific treatment such as Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST) was explored as well as a social functional approach such as Script Therapy. These two approaches were assessed by the outcome measures of rate of speech, subject-verb-object production, and error rates during probe tasks.

Objective: To examine the impact of two treatment approaches: Script Therapy and Verb Network Strengthening Treatment for two individuals with chronic agrammatic Broca’s aphasia.

Method: A single subject multiple baseline …

The New Threat To Journalists: Robots, Annie Nova

Capstones

NEWSPAPERS, television studios and news websites across the world have swapped out human reporters for robots. In just a few weeks, I’ll be in a cap and gown at the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism. I have dedicated the last 18 months of my life to learning how to report and write. Here is where people are transformed into the so-called East Coast elite members of the media. No small amount of money, energy and time went to this effort. Had I learned to do anything a robot couldn’t?

Privileging Autistics Of Color: A Human Rights Approach To Applied Behavior Analysis (Aba) Therapy, Rebecca Rubey Dec 2017

Privileging Autistics Of Color: A Human Rights Approach To Applied Behavior Analysis (Aba) Therapy, Rebecca Rubey

Master's Projects and Capstones

This field project examines the social construction of autistic people of color through the pathology paradigm and the associated human rights violations. The purpose of the project is to disrupt the pathology paradigm by privileging voices of autistic people of color in professional development workshops for ABA therapy providers. The workshops aim to help ABA therapy providers understand the historical context of ABA, how it fits into the wider systems of white supremacy and ableism, and how these dynamics are re-enacted in every day practice with autistic people of color.
