The Interactional Production Of Race And Religious Identity In An Urban Catholic School, Robert Jean Leblanc Oct 2017

The Interactional Production Of Race And Religious Identity In An Urban Catholic School, Robert Jean Leblanc

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper describes how students in an urban Catholic school draw on racial and religious categories to construct classroom-specific identities during coursework. When students engage with each other in classroom discussions, they use broadly circulating, institutional, and event-level categories to position one another, and in doing so articulate who may speak and participate in class talk. This paper draws from interactional ethnographic data, showing how Vietnamese American and African American students used different religious and racial categories to delimit the interactional floor during class time and in the process exclude speakers.

La producción de las interacciones de la identidad racial …

Communities Of Practice: A Consortium Of Catholic Elementary Schools’ Collaborative Journey, Karen K. Huchting, Matthew P. Cunningham, Ursula S. Aldana, Delmy Ruiz Oct 2017

Communities Of Practice: A Consortium Of Catholic Elementary Schools’ Collaborative Journey, Karen K. Huchting, Matthew P. Cunningham, Ursula S. Aldana, Delmy Ruiz

Journal of Catholic Education

Archdioceses and dioceses around the United States continue to brainstorm innovative ways to market their schools in an education system that provides a number of choices to parents and their children. Applying Wenger’s (1998) learning theory entitled Communities of Practice (COPs), the purpose of this case study was to investigate one such plan to improve the viability of three inner-city Catholic elementary schools that had similar missions, were located within just a few miles of one another, and served the same neighborhoods of a working-class, culture-rich Latino community in Southern California. Data collection included in-depth interviews with principals and teachers …

Who Do You Say You Are: Relationships And Faith In Catholic Schools, Jennifer S. Maney, Carrie King, Thomas J. Kiely Oct 2017

Who Do You Say You Are: Relationships And Faith In Catholic Schools, Jennifer S. Maney, Carrie King, Thomas J. Kiely

Journal of Catholic Education

This study aimed to evaluate and articulate what makes Catholic schools special and effective by measuring culture and climate in five Catholic high schools and two Catholic elementary schools in a large metropolitan area in the Midwest United States. The seven schools represented a variety of student demographics, location, and size of school. Findings of this study included: the Catholic identity of schools must become an intentional aspect of the planning, orientation, training, and evaluation of the faculty and administration; faculty-student relationships are rarely measured regarding their effectiveness in bolstering academic achievement or Catholic mission effectiveness; cultural awareness and cultural …

From Lingua To Glossa: Linguistics In Fair Open Access, Johan Rooryck Oct 2017

From Lingua To Glossa: Linguistics In Fair Open Access, Johan Rooryck

Open Access Day

Johan Rooryck with be presenting from a remote location via GoToMeeting.

A description of his presentation is below:

Open Access publishing is often said to be the future of academic journals, but the actual move from a subscription model to an Open Access model is not easily achieved. The transition from Lingua to Glossa provides proof of concept that it can be done. This transition was made possible by our model of Fair Open Access, a model for flipping subscription journals to Open Access. This model has 3 main features:

  1. Discipline-based: Linguistics in Open Access (LingOA, www.lingoa.eu) helps flipping …

Single Versus Concurrent Systems: Nominal Classification In Mian, Greville G. Corbett, Sebastian Fedden, Raphael Finkel Oct 2017

Single Versus Concurrent Systems: Nominal Classification In Mian, Greville G. Corbett, Sebastian Fedden, Raphael Finkel

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The Papuan language Mian allows us to refine the typology of nominal classification. Mian has two candidate classification systems, differing completely in their formal realization but overlapping considerably in their semantics. To determine whether to analyse Mian as a single system or concurrent systems we adopt a canonical approach. Our criteria – orthogonality of the systems (we give a precise measure), semantic compositionality, morphosyntactic alignment, distribution across parts of speech, exponence, and interaction with other features – point mainly to an analysis as concurrent systems. We thus improve our analysis of Mian and make progress with the typology of nominal …

Understanding What The Vienna Convention Says About Identifying And Using 'Sources For Treaty Interpretation', Donald H. Regan Oct 2017

Understanding What The Vienna Convention Says About Identifying And Using 'Sources For Treaty Interpretation', Donald H. Regan

Book Chapters

International trade law is overwhelmingly treaty-based. In the traditional sense of ‘sources of law’, the World Trade Organization (WTO) treaty is the unique source of WTO law, for practical purposes. Customary law and general principles play (p. 1048) virtually no role as independent sources of substantive law. But the WTO treaty, like any treaty, requires interpretation, and there are vexed questions about what we might call the ‘sources for treaty interpretation’. What materials other than the treaty text may be used in interpreting the treaty? And how are they to be used? These questions arise both for materials internal to …

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, Philip Chike Aghadiuno Oct 2017

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, Philip Chike Aghadiuno

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Manuscripts sent to editors are often in different states of crafting or drafting. It is the task of the editor to help the author by polishing the manuscripts to the acceptable standard. Editors may seek clarifications from the authors about the missing links in the drafts. They may ask for references of strong claims, improvement of the draft, refinement of the argument, adjustment in tone, chapter re-organisation, fixing grammar points, among others. Editors raise these flags in the editorial process through author queries. The nature of queries written by the editor for the author differs from the ones written by …

A Bibliography For Reimagining Borders, Molly Sherman

A Bibliography for Reimagining Borders

A Bibliography for Reimagining Borders is a collection of resources recommended by students, faculty, and staff at St. Edward’s University. The list is inspired by the University’s 2017–2018 Common Theme program on immigrant voices and seeks to expand the conversation around current social and political concerns about immigration issues on campus and beyond during this critical time in our country. The recommendations are derived from diverse contexts and subject matters that expand, complicate, or make us think differently about what a border is, what it does, or who it affects.

A Defining Moment: Transnational Nursing Education, N Arunasalam Oct 2017

A Defining Moment: Transnational Nursing Education, N Arunasalam

School of Nursing and Midwifery

A DEFINING MOMENT, Transnational Nursing Education by Dr Nirmala ARUNASALAM is a competent and accessible text focusing on nurse education. Recommended for teaching and learning as well as pedagogical courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is a must have and a must read in a world of “pseudo factum knowledge” where social and human oriented professions and scientific disciplines such as nursing are getting little attention. The depth of the background for this study, and the intimate self-reflection Dr Arunasalam provides for this monograph greatly enhances the quality of the study. This book is an insightful exploration of an …

From Test Scores To Language Use: Emergent Bilinguals Using English To Accomplish Academic Tasks, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica Oct 2017

From Test Scores To Language Use: Emergent Bilinguals Using English To Accomplish Academic Tasks, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica

Teacher Education

Prominent discourses about emergent bilinguals’ academic abilities tend to focus on performance as measured by test scores and perpetuate the message that emergent bilinguals trail far behind their peers. When we remove the constraints of formal testing situations, what can emergent bilinguals do in English as they engage in naturally occurring classroom interactions about content? Using six months of naturally occurring emergent bilingual talk, this article shows that (1) emergent bilinguals produced a wide range of academic speech acts in English while engaged in English language arts tasks, (2) these speech acts were aligned with state academic expectations, and (3) …

Real Boys Don't Do Language And Literacy--Or Do They?, Christen M. Pearson Oct 2017

Real Boys Don't Do Language And Literacy--Or Do They?, Christen M. Pearson

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

Over the past several decades, there has been a decline in boys’ achievement, along with documentation of increasing struggles in language (both first and second) and literacy acquisition (Carr & Pauwels, 2006). To address this problem, gender differences have been looked at through the lens of socially and culturally constructed identity (Kindlon & Thompson, 2000; Pollack, 1998); however, emerging neurolinguistic research supports biological determinism, with evidence of strong biological (sex) differences in brain structure and function that impact language and learning (Bonomo, 2010; Gurian, 1996; Sax, 2005). This paper first provides an overview of current brain-based research on sex differences, …

Why We Should Have Seen That Coming, K.W Miller, Marty Wolf, F.S. Grodzinsky Oct 2017

Why We Should Have Seen That Coming, K.W Miller, Marty Wolf, F.S. Grodzinsky

Computer Science Faculty Works

In this paper we examine the case of Tay, the Microsoft AI chatbot that was launched in March, 2016. After less than 24 hours, Microsoft shut down the experiment because the chatbot was generating tweets that were judged to be inappropriate since they included racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic language. We contend that the case of Tay illustrates a problem with the very nature of learning software (LS is a term that describes any software that changes its program in response to its interactions) that interacts directly with the public, and the developer’s role and responsibility associated with it. We make …

Middle School Educators' Perceptions Of At-Risk Students Following A School's Initiative Focused On Helping At-Risk Students Succeed, Johnel Bryant Robinson Oct 2017

Middle School Educators' Perceptions Of At-Risk Students Following A School's Initiative Focused On Helping At-Risk Students Succeed, Johnel Bryant Robinson

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

With a focus on teachers’ efficacy and its effect on their perceptions of at-risk students, this qualitative case study examined the perceptions of teachers toward at-risk students, following a school’s 3-year implementation of an initiative that was geared toward helping educators improve teaching efficacy. The effects of professional development on improving the relationships with at-risk students and the influence on middle school educators’ perceptions and efficacy were explored. Data was gathered by conducting 20 interviews with the participants; including classroom teachers, an administrator, and a guidance counselor, regarding teachers’ perceptions of the at-risk students, following a schoolwide initiative. Six themes …

“You Live In The United States, You Speak English,” Decían Las Maestras How New Mexican Spanish Speakers Enact, Ascribe, And Reject Ethnic Identities, Katherine Christoffersen, Naomi L. Shin Oct 2017

“You Live In The United States, You Speak English,” Decían Las Maestras How New Mexican Spanish Speakers Enact, Ascribe, And Reject Ethnic Identities, Katherine Christoffersen, Naomi L. Shin

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

New Mexico’s unique linguistic and ethnic heritage is the result of a complex history of colonization characterized by oppression. This chapter examines how, in this context of oppression, New Mexican Spanish speakers negotiate ethnic identities through bilingual talk-in-interaction. The study takes an ethnomethodological approach to identity as something that people ‘do’ (Widdicombe, 1998) and analyzes how New Mexican Spanish speakers ‘do’ ethnic identities. The present analysis is based on a subset of the New Mexico and Colorado Spanish Survey (Vigil & Bills, 2000), including 30 fully transcribed audio-recordings of semi-structured interviews with New Mexican Spanish speakers. A positioning analysis of …

Bibliotaxonomy: Definition, Scope And Implication For Lis Scholarship, Chuma O. Nnadozie Oct 2017

Bibliotaxonomy: Definition, Scope And Implication For Lis Scholarship, Chuma O. Nnadozie

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The paper introduces bibliotaxonomy as a generic name for those aspects of Library and Information Science (LIS) scholarship that deal with the processing and organization of books, documents and other information materials. It traces the origin of, and inspiration for bibliotaxonomy to different taxonomic practices in various communities, societies, as well as earlier philosophical and botanical classifications. A sketch of the contours of the field of bibliotaxonomy was presented which shows that this phenomenon cuts across specific library technical services of cataloguing, classification, indexing and accessioning. In addition, successful application of taxonomic principles from other disciplines in the organization of …
