Hedge Algebras: An Algebraic Approach To Domains Of Linguistic Variables And Their Applicability, N.C. Ho N.C.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The paper is an overview on an algebraic approach to domains of linguistic variables and somefirst applications to show the applicability of this new approach. In this approach, each linguistic domain can be considered as a hedge algebra (HA for short) and based on the structure of HAs,a notion of fuzziness measure of linguistic hedges and terms can be defined. In order to apply hedge algebras to those problems, the results of which are needed, a notion of semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs) will be introduced. It shown that there is a closed connection between SQMs and fuzziness measure of hedge …

Purpose: Achievement gaps exist between children from racial/ethnic minority and low SES homes and their peers, yet clear explanations for the gap have been elusive. In addition to vocabulary, some are examining pragmatics to help understand the gap, as functional language can a) reflect how caregivers stimulate language; b) show how preschoolers communicate and; c) affect academic performance. The purpose of this study was to examine links between linguistic performance and the communicative functions (CFs) of typically developing African American, European American, and Latino American preschool boys and girls and their mothers. Method: CFs were coded from one learning and …

The Importance Of Differentiated Instruction In Efl Learning, Laura Naka
UBT International Conference
Differentiated instructions in learning is based in the appropriate methods for learning but in fact this is the way how teachers exploit the teaching opportunities in order to provide better learning environment within their instruction. English as a foreign language learning in Kosovo has been overwhelming and in addition to the importance of English Language Learning, is also the importance of increasing the interest in more effective teaching. The most difficult challenge, that EFL teachers consider to overcome, is teaching in mixed ability classes. Mixed ability EFL classes are a composition of students with different English language level proficiency in …

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)
For academics hovering between contingent and permanent status, getting publications on the CV can make the difference—or can it? Looking closely at engagement with professional academic literacy practices offers meaningful insights into academic labor. This article considers the case of a newly-minted PhD working a collection of contingent jobs while aspiring to publish and obtain a permanent position. In the face of a heavy teaching load and disheartening job search, Elle Stewart (a pseudonym), decides to put off writing. She disidentifies with the discourse of being an academic and disengages from professional academic literacy practices, despite a life history full …
The Verbs In Mandarin-Chinese, Albanian And English, Seen From The Perspective Of The Grammatical Tense, Florim Ajdini
The Verbs In Mandarin-Chinese, Albanian And English, Seen From The Perspective Of The Grammatical Tense, Florim Ajdini
UBT International Conference
Different from English and Albanian, verbs in Chinese-Mandarin, do not conjugate across pronouns which perform the action. They have no inflectional nature and features in none of the grammatical tenses which are in the focus of this paper. The Chinese verbs never go through case and person! This phenomenon, in a way makes life easier for the non-native learner of Chinese, not having to remember all verb particles in order to create the time effect, to express an action. It makes easier for the learners of this ‘mega language’, spoken by more than 1.300.000.000 people, to learn it easily. Given …
The Impact Of Subtitled Movies On Vocabulary Development, Alisa Sadiku
The Impact Of Subtitled Movies On Vocabulary Development, Alisa Sadiku
UBT International Conference
Learning new vocabulary compromises a significant factor for success within language learning since without the adequate knowledge of words and their meaning, learners are not able to use the target language efficiently. Moreover, vocabulary tends to be forgotten if it is not acquired and used through the right methods that will provide learners with language inputs in genuine target language environment. In this regard, the increasing access to different multimedia and technology resources facilitate spontaneous vocabulary acquisition for the contemporary age learners. In particular, movies with subtitles can be a great tool in bringing students closer to authentic real life …

How To Develop The Critical Use Of The Web: A Practical Example, Pranvera Kraja, Paolo Martena, Jozef Bushati
UBT International Conference
Juveniles born after the year 2000 are defined as digital natives due to the ease with which they use the Web. They have, indeed, been able to constantly relate to digital tools since birth and have reached an optimum level of technical ability. Contemporary neuroscience highlights how new media have strongly conditioned the way in which learning takes place and modifies the time taken, styles used and how we understand and analyse the phenomena. Schools have the task, not only of raising awareness, but also that of the ethical and critical use of these media. This means that every student …

The Right Of Use Of Albanian Language As Official Language In Macedonia: The New Draft Law, Its Content, Advancement And Comparison, Bekim Kadriu, Ylber Sela
UBT International Conference
The use of Albanian language as official language in Macedonia has been a challenge especially after the Ohrid Framework Agreement (OFA) in 2001. Before 2001, Albanian language was defined as an official language and was used only in private matters as well in primary and secondary education. With the OFA and Constitutional changes in 2002, the language that is spoken by 20% of the population in the country was defined as an official language, but it’s application in practice was left to be regulated by e specific law. The law was adopted in 2008, 6 years after the constitutional changes. …

The Definition Of A 'Place Of Effective Management' At Article 4 Paragraph 3 Of The 2014 Oecd Model Tax Convention, Shkumbin Asllani
UBT International Conference
The jurisdiction to tax is based on the connection of either the person or the income namely the concept of residence and the source taxation. The residence principle is based on the presumption that a state will tax its residents on their global income, while the source taxation is based on the connection of a particular income earn to the other state. Jurisdictions, for decades now enter into tax treaties to reduce or eliminate double taxation by relinquishing completely or partly their taxing rights. Yet, in international taxation when two or more states impose taxes on the same taxpayer for …

Art-Based Perceptual Ecology: An Alternative Monitoring Method In The Assessment Of Rainfall And Vegetation In A Ciénaga Community, Lee Ann Woolery
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
As an artist, educator, researcher, and scholar, with a focus on divergent ways of knowing, I use art-making as a way to connect with the natural world. In the following article, I explore the making of an image with my hands when practicing Art-Based Perceptual Ecology (ABPE) as a way of extending my understanding and ecological knowing of the natural world, or what will also be referred to as the landscape. ABPE methodologies may offer the means by which humans reconnect to a pre-discursive (mimetic) language, a sentient language our ancestors used to communicate with the animate world. In …

Complex systems have become a research area with increasing interest over the last years. The emergence of new technologies, the increase in computational power with reduced resources and cost, the integration of the physical world with computer based systems has created the possibility of significantly improving the quality of life of humans. While a significant degree of automation within these systems exists and has been provided in the past decade with examples of the smart homes and energy efficient buildings, a paradigm shift towards autonomy has been noted. The need for autonomy requires the extraction of a model; while a …

College of Population Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The conduct of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in low-resource settings may present unique financial, logistic, and process-related challenges. Middle-income countries that have comparable disease burdens to low-income countries, but greater availability of resources, may be conducive settings for RCTs. Indeed, the country of Botswana is experiencing a rapid increase in the conduct of RCTs. Our objective was to explore the experiences of individuals conducting RCTs in Botswana to gain an understanding of the challenges and adaptive strategies to their work.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with 14 national and international individuals working on RCTs in Botswana. Participants included principal …
