A Comparative Analysis Of The Factors Determining The Immigration Policies Of Germany And Hungary, Dominika Kleinova Nov 2017

A Comparative Analysis Of The Factors Determining The Immigration Policies Of Germany And Hungary, Dominika Kleinova

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Currently, the European Union struggles to deliver a united response to the immigration issue. In order to bring forth a framework for its improvement, it is important to consider the reasons for individual member states’ behaviors. This study attempts to examine the factors influencing the immigration policies of Germany and Hungary, whose policies appear to differ the greatest and should thus encompass most of the spectrum a majority of other member states fall under. The thesis will describe the effect of the economy, history, previous contact with foreigners, shaping of national identity, as well as education on the populations’ attitudes …

End Games: Haydn's And Beethoven's Play With Endings In Their Opp. 33 No. 2s, James K. Palmer Nov 2017

End Games: Haydn's And Beethoven's Play With Endings In Their Opp. 33 No. 2s, James K. Palmer

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Both Beethoven’s Bagatelle Op. 33 no. 2 and Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 33 no. 2 demonstrate playfulness far beyond the typical confines of eighteenth-century galant conventions. Although many scholars have addressed the conclusions to these works (Wheelock 1992, Levy 1995, Goeth 2013, Klorman 2013, Palmer 2015), no research has demonstrated how Beethoven’s practical joke is both indebted to, and distinct from Haydn’s famous gag. This article demonstrates how Beethoven’s “end game” is indebted to Haydn, but takes on a unique flavor in the hands of the budding romantic.

In these two endings, both composers play practical jokes on their listeners …

Ordinal Convolutional Neural Networks For Predicting Rdoc Positive Valence Psychiatric Symptom Severity Scores, Anthony Rios, Ramakanth Kavuluru

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Background—The CEGS N-GRID 2016 Shared Task in Clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) provided a set of 1000 neuropsychiatric notes to participants as part of a competition to predict psychiatric symptom severity scores. This paper summarizes our methods, results, and experiences based on our participation in the second track of the shared task.

Objective—Classical methods of text classification usually fall into one of three problem types: binary, multi-class, and multi-label classification. In this effort, we study ordinal regression problems with text data where misclassifications are penalized differently based on how far apart the ground truth and model predictions are …

The Fox And The Goose: The Pamphlet Wars And Volpone's Animal Metaphors, Julie Anne Anderson Nov 2017

The Fox And The Goose: The Pamphlet Wars And Volpone's Animal Metaphors, Julie Anne Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Ben Jonson wrote Volpone when England's pamphlet wars and the rule of Queen Elizabeth I contributed to an environment in which the "woman question" was forefront in many minds. These social concerns echo in Volpone, resulting in a play that not only deals with vices and greed, but that also, to a limited degree, contributes to the querelle de femmes. The play's numerous animal metaphors create distinctions between characters; among other things, animalistic surnames represent the vices and complexities of humanity, and, more specifically, reverberate with judgments that seem to underscore the injustices of misogynistic pamphleteers. Moreover, Jonson's …

Foreword To D.W. Robertson, Jr., Uncollected Essays, Paul A. Olson Nov 2017

Foreword To D.W. Robertson, Jr., Uncollected Essays, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

During the late summer of 1992, I received a call from Darryl Gless, a professor of Renaissance literature at the University of North Carolina and my former student, asking me if it would be all right if he and other people looking after the literary remains of D. W. Robertson would send me a package of published and unpublished articles that Robertson had left behind upon his death in July of that year. Gless had been a friend of Dr. and Mrs. Robertson in Chapel Hill, visiting with them frequently while trying a bit to look after their well-being in …

Examining Justice In Social Studies Research, J. Spencer Clark, Steve P. Camicia Nov 2017

Examining Justice In Social Studies Research, J. Spencer Clark, Steve P. Camicia

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Our article is an extension of a project involving a content analysis of two social studies journals, Theory andResearch in Social Education (TRSE) and The Social Studies. We performed an analysis on all articles in thesejournals from 2006-2016. Our findings from the analysis indicated a narrow frame of perspectives related toepistemologies and methodologies, and an increasing interest in examining a range of researcher andparticipant positionalities. We interpreted the range of perspectives in social studies journals in light of thepossible impact upon democratic education and social justice through Sen’s (2009) framework for theorizingjustice. We illustrate aspects of this framework by presenting …

A Qualitative Analysis Of African-American High School Students’ Transitioning From Middle School To High School In An Urban Private High School Setting, Syreeta R. Holland

Dissertations

Research indicated the transition from eighth grade into ninth grade can be a difficult time for students. His Grace High School (HGHS) ninth grade students illustrated this difficulty. The purpose of this study was to examine African American student and parent perceptions regarding the transition process into high school. Currently, all students and parents at HGHS participate in a two-part orientation session to prepare and acclimate to the new school community and learning environments. Orientation sessions are facilitated by predominately African American staff members; however, the premise of the session was developed and implemented by Caucasian staff and faculty. Furthermore, …

Application Of P300 Event-Related Potential In Brain-Computer Interface, Ali Raider, Reza Fazel-Rezai

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate one of the applications of P300 event-related potential (ERP), i.e., brain-computer interface (BCI). Researchers and students will find the chapter appealing with a preliminary description of P300 ERP. This chapter also appreciates the importance and advantages of noninvasive ERP technique. In noninvasive BCI, the P300 ERPs are extracted from brain electrical activities [electroencephalogram (EEG)] as a signature of the underlying electrophysiological mechanism of brain responses to the external or internal changes and events. As the chapter proceeds, topics are covered on more relevant scholarly works about challenges and new directions in …

Parent Perceptions Of The Transition Programs Completed By Their Adult Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Judithanne Arcaro Nov 2017

Parent Perceptions Of The Transition Programs Completed By Their Adult Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Judithanne Arcaro

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The lifelong effects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) impact the living, employment, and social aspects for individuals with the diagnosis and their families. In this study, I sought to determine parent perspectives of school transition programs completed by their adult children with ASD. Guided by the theoretical framework from Bronfenbrenner, Freire, and Mezirow, my purpose was to identify transition practices with which parents were satisfied and dissatisfied, as well as to seek their input about improving transition programming. With the unemployment rate for individuals with ASD reported by the Department of Labor as 80%, improvement of outcomes would reduce the …

Clausewitz's Theory Of War And Victory In Contemporary Conflict, Emile Simpson Nov 2017

Clausewitz's Theory Of War And Victory In Contemporary Conflict, Emile Simpson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article considers whether Clausewitz’s account of the nature of war is universal to all wars, in order then to assess how far his concept of victory is universal. While aspects of Clausewitz’s concept of war are still universal, others are not. Accordingly, his theory of victory is not universal to all wars, and especially not to wars fought against transnational terrorist networks.

Designing Curriculum The Fair Way, Lorraine Wallace Nov 2017

Designing Curriculum The Fair Way, Lorraine Wallace

The Utah English Journal

It was my second year as a teacher, my first year in a new school. In early August, I went to the building and introduced myself to the secretary. She was very pleasant as she escorted me to my new classroom. She opened the door, handed me the key, pointed to the cupboards where books were stored, and told me to let her know if I needed anything. Expecting some type of curriculum guide, I naively asked, “What am I supposed to teach?” “English, of course,” she answered with a laugh that continued as she went down the hall, back …

The Irishtheatre As Imaginative Space: A Vehicle And Venue For The Reconstruction Of The Irish Identity, Rania M Rafik Khalil

English Language and Literature

Current cultural and political changes have prompted the theatre to play a significant role in staging the transformations of the Irish identity. Over time, it has provided an impetus for expressions of the collective new self-image of the Irish. Re-inventing the self requires a manifestation of space and the production of space whether geographical, metaphorical or a physical stage representation. ‘Space’has been utilisedin Irish drama in terms ofgeographical location, cartography, socialmedia, technology, immigration, and the theatre stage. Globalisation has also played a crucial role in terms of creating overlapping spacesand multiple belongings. This study will examinethrough Henri Lefebvre’s theory of space, …

Language And Socioeconomics Predict Geographic Variation In Peer Review Outcomes At An Ecology Journal, C. Sean Burns, Charles W. Fox Nov 2017

Language And Socioeconomics Predict Geographic Variation In Peer Review Outcomes At An Ecology Journal, C. Sean Burns, Charles W. Fox

Information Science Faculty Publications

Papers submitted by scientists located in western nations generally fare better in the peer review process than do papers submitted by scientists from elsewhere. This paper examines geographic variation in peer review outcomes (whether a manuscript is sent for review, review scores obtained, and final decisions by editors) for 3529 submissions over a 4.5 year period at the journal Functional Ecology. In particular, we test whether geographic variation in language and socioeconomics are adequate to explain most or are all of this variation. There was no relationship between the geographic regions of handling editors and the decisions to send …

Social Imaginaries And The Theory Of The Normative Utterance, Meili Steele Nov 2017

Social Imaginaries And The Theory Of The Normative Utterance, Meili Steele

Faculty Publications

Theorists of the social imaginary, such as Benedict Anderson, Charles Taylor, Cornelius Castoriadis, and Marcel Gauchet have given us new ways to talk about the structures of the shared meanings and practices of the West. As a group, they have directed their arguments against the narrow horizons of meaning oyed by deliberative political theories in developing their basic normative concepts and principles. Anderson speaks of the new shapes of time and space provided by the novel and newspaper; Taylor and Gauchet discuss the ontological importance of the emergence of secularity, the public sphere, popular sovereignty, and the market; Castoriadis places …

Contextual Conditions For Acculturation And Adjustment Of Adolescent Immigrants – Integrating Theory And Findings, Maja K. Schachner, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Peter Noack Nov 2017

Contextual Conditions For Acculturation And Adjustment Of Adolescent Immigrants – Integrating Theory And Findings, Maja K. Schachner, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Peter Noack

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

In this paper we review the literature on contextual conditions related to the school, the family, and ethnic or immigrant-group membership, and their association with adjustment outcomes of adolescent immigrants in Europe. Drawing on theories in the areas of acculturation and development, the first aim was to develop a conceptual framework, which integrates acculturative and developmental processes in early adolescence and can guide the literature review in this area. The second aim was to identify the most important conditions for adolescent immigrants’ acculturation and adjustment outcomes in school and the family, and related to immigrant-group membership.

The Glocal Hiv/Aids Epidemic And The Need For An Extended Theory Of Power In International Relations, Annika Hughes Nov 2017

The Glocal Hiv/Aids Epidemic And The Need For An Extended Theory Of Power In International Relations, Annika Hughes

International Dialogue

This paper argues for an extended theory of power in International Relations (IR), using the example of the glocal HIV/AIDS epidemic. It will argue that world power relations depend not only on military, economic, social and cultural power, but also on the power of the human body itself. This argument builds on the author’s own theory of glocalised world power, which combines a Foucaultian with a structurationist approach to argue for the existence of four-faced power relationships across the following twelve interdependent sites of power: 1) time; 2) space; 3) knowledge and aesthetics; 4) morality and emotion; 5) identities; 6) …
