Psychodynamics Of Mother Daughter Relationship: Degrees Of Deprivation, Oppression And Dispossession In Doris Lessing’S Fictio, Rabia Ashraf Jan 2017

Psychodynamics Of Mother Daughter Relationship: Degrees Of Deprivation, Oppression And Dispossession In Doris Lessing’S Fictio, Rabia Ashraf

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Contextualized within psychoanalytic feminist critique, this study aims at fathoming out various dynamics operating at psychoanalytic level within the mother daughter relationship that affect daughter‟s level of intimacy or repulsion towards the mother in the texts of Doris Lessing, in particular The Grass is singing (1950) and Under My Skin (1994). While focusing on these works and approaching them through a feminist critical perspective of the phenomenon of motherhood, mothering and matrophobia, I have consider a re-examination of Lessing‟s attempt to provide an inevitably fresh stance of mother daughter dyad‟s tussle. The research contends that by breaking idealized boundaries and …

Celebrating Or Mourning Patriarchal Love: The Case Of Curious Courtships In Marquez’S Love In The Time Of Cholera, Muhammad Zubair Baig Jan 2017

Celebrating Or Mourning Patriarchal Love: The Case Of Curious Courtships In Marquez’S Love In The Time Of Cholera, Muhammad Zubair Baig

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The present study on the novel Love in the Time of Cholera is a critique of idealized patriarchal concept of love divided into higher and debased love by Freud. Love in the novel is predominantly physical and sexual in nature that involves the politics of body and eroticism by creating what Freidan calls feminine mystique. Love, omnipotent in the novel, is choleric in nature showing multi-facets of structured sexuality ranging from extramarital violations to child abuse. The novel projects intensive display of genderism and patriarchal sexual fetishes that gratify whatever masculinity can possibly imagine. There is noticeable narrative indifference towards …

A ‘Thick Description’ Genre Analysis Of Death Announcement Notices, Farzad Salahshour Jan 2017

A ‘Thick Description’ Genre Analysis Of Death Announcement Notices, Farzad Salahshour

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

As a universally recognized social practice, the discourse of the Death Announcement Notice, henceforth DAN, is subject to macro-cultural and micro-contextual influences, and consequently to various procedural strategies that shape its schematic structure. A ‘thick description’, one which combines outsider theoretical models with insider experiential knowledge was adopted for the analysis of a randomly compiled corpus of 50 DAN texts. Based on Swales’ (1990) model of genre, eight schematic moves were discerned. The researcher’s insider knowledge was employed to yield a deeper understanding of this social practice

Reshaping The National Image Of Azerbaijan Through Nation Branding Endeavours, Sana Imran Jan 2017

Reshaping The National Image Of Azerbaijan Through Nation Branding Endeavours, Sana Imran

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Every nation possesses a nation brand image, either with or without nation branding. A well thought out nation branding campaign can however, project a nation’s image and solicit global recognition. Such an endeavor concurrently instills a greater sense of belonging, self-determination and ideals of public communication in the domestic audience. The value of nation branding for tapping the economic potential of a nation remains arguable. In this paper, an effort is being made to understand how a developing country like Azerbaijan is accruing international recognition through apt utilization of nation branding tools. Strategic, conceptual and practically relevant aspects will be …

“…Aspects Of My Life That I Am Trying To Understand Better”: Reinterpreting The Misinterpreted Mother In Doris Lessing’S Under My Skin And The Grass Is Singing, Rabia Ashraf Jan 2017

“…Aspects Of My Life That I Am Trying To Understand Better”: Reinterpreting The Misinterpreted Mother In Doris Lessing’S Under My Skin And The Grass Is Singing, Rabia Ashraf

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

With the application of psychoanalytic and feminist tradition, the psychotherapeutic aspect of interpreting the mother, concept of motherhood and the phenomenon of mothering using feminist tradition is analyzed in this paper. Doris Lessing, through her self-representational writing, fictive protagonists (based on herself and her mother) and by declaring in the later part of her life that her mother was a personality that demanded more thinking, understanding and empathy on her part instead of repulsion, hatred and fear to be like her which is called matrophobia, it can be stated that this psychotherapy of matrophobia (Ashraf 77) is Lessing’s predominant concern …

Ineffable: Latency In Symbolic Languages, Sirah Yoo Jan 2017

Ineffable: Latency In Symbolic Languages, Sirah Yoo

Theses and Dissertations

The design process demands comprehensive knowledge of visual signs and symbols with a focus on visual literacy; it is related to visual syntax, semantics, and the pragmatics of contexts. My work is an interdisciplinary investigation into how designers integrate polysemantic signs into their design process for particular and highly individualized audiences. By analyzing the role of signs in specific contexts across the spectrum of arts, society, literature, and semiotics, a designer's understanding of the cyclical nature of interpretation and reinterpretation in complex environments creates an avenue for cultivating a new schema that provides further levels of interpretations and different access …

Doorways To Being: Modernism And 'Lived' Architectures, Amy A. Foley Jan 2017

Doorways To Being: Modernism And 'Lived' Architectures, Amy A. Foley

Open Access Dissertations

Situated in recent scholarship on interiors and architecture in modernist fiction, "Doorways to Being" explores ways in which the modernist novel proposes a phenomenological engagement with the material environment, specifically the body in relation to transitional architectures. The study of thresholds in select modern fiction seeks to answer the essential question of how and why we move in the constructed world from the perspective of phenomenology and cultural studies. This comparative and interdisciplinary dissertation demonstrates how modernist fiction reestablishes the primacy of the sensed physical world in the spirit of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The introduction theorizes the threshold or doorway as …

The Limits Of Scribal Creativity: Rewriting The Cook’S Tale In Bodley 686, Franz Liebster Jan 2017

The Limits Of Scribal Creativity: Rewriting The Cook’S Tale In Bodley 686, Franz Liebster

The Expositor: A Journal of Undergraduate Research in the Humanities

Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales exhibits elements of both completeness and incompleteness as a work of literature. Written in England starting c. 1387, the text presents a collection of tales told by characters of diverse backgrounds, combining poetry and prose to form a sequence of stories. With some exceptions, the tales themselves appear to be contained and complete, but the collection in its entirety “still bears signs of a work in progress.”1 In the General Prologue, the host of the Tabard Inn proposes the structure for the tales told by the travelers on their pilgrimage from London to …

Robust Adaptive Fuzzy Control Of A Three-Phase Active Power Filter Based On Feedback Linearization, Shixi Hou, Juntao Fei Jan 2017

Robust Adaptive Fuzzy Control Of A Three-Phase Active Power Filter Based On Feedback Linearization, Shixi Hou, Juntao Fei

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a robust adaptive fuzzy control system using feedback linearization is proposed for a three-phase active power filter (APF). The APF system is divided into two separate loops: the current dynamic inner loop and the DC voltage dynamic outer loop. Adaptive fuzzy tracking control using feedback linearization is employed for the current dynamic inner loop to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional method. The proposed controller can ensure proper tracking of the reference current and impose desired dynamic behavior, giving robustness and insensitivity to parameter variations. Adaptive fuzzy proportional-integral control is applied to the DC voltage dynamics outer …

Implementation Of Svc Based On Grey Theory And Fuzzy Logic To Improve Lvrt Capability Of Wind Distributed Generations, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Akbar Itami Jan 2017

Implementation Of Svc Based On Grey Theory And Fuzzy Logic To Improve Lvrt Capability Of Wind Distributed Generations, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Akbar Itami

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Due to the great absorption of reactive power after voltage drops caused by faults in network, the low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of squirrel cage induction generators (SCIGs) in wind farms is a great challenge. If a static VAR compensator (SVC) is installed at the point of common coupling (PCC) of a wind farm with a main network, it can improve the wind generation's LVRT capability with reactive power compensation. In the voltage control loop of a conventional SVC, the voltage actual value of the PCC is compared with the reference voltage value. This paper presents a method for implementation …

A Combined Approach Based On Fuzzy Ahp And Fuzzy Inference System To Rank Reviewers In Online Communities, Hossein Abbasimehr, Mohammadjafar Tarokh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Online product review communities allow users to share their ideas and opinions about various products and services. Although online reviews as user-generated content can be considered as an invaluable source of information for both consumers and firms, these reviews tend to be of very different quality. To tackle the problem of low quality reviews, we address reviewer credibility and propose an innovative framework. The framework comprises five critical phases for ranking reviewers in terms of credibility using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy inference system. To determine the weights of the features, a fuzzy AHP method was applied. …

Unsupervised Learning Of Allomorphs In Turkish, Burcu Can Jan 2017

Unsupervised Learning Of Allomorphs In Turkish, Burcu Can

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

One morpheme may have several surface forms that correspond to allomorphs. In English, ed and $d$ are surface forms of the past tense morpheme, and $s$, es, and ies are surface forms of the plural or present tense morpheme. Turkish has a large number of allomorphs due to its morphophonemic processes. One morpheme can have tens of different surface forms in Turkish. This leads to a sparsity problem in natural language processing tasks in Turkish. Detection of allomorphs has not been studied much because of its difficulty. For example, tü and di are Turkish allomorphs (i.e. past tense morpheme), but …

Force And Torque Parameter Estimation For A 4-Pole Hybrid Electromagnet By Anfis Hybrid Learning Algorithm, Murat Atlihan, Bariş Can Yalçin, Kadi̇r Erkan Jan 2017

Force And Torque Parameter Estimation For A 4-Pole Hybrid Electromagnet By Anfis Hybrid Learning Algorithm, Murat Atlihan, Bariş Can Yalçin, Kadi̇r Erkan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a force and torque estimation method based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) has been developed to get rid of multiple integral calculations of air gap coefficients that cause time delay for magnetic levitation control applications. During magnetic levitation applications that contain a 4-pole hybrid electromagnet, multiple integral calculations have to be done for obtaining air gap permanence parameters, and these parameters are needed to calculate force and torque parameters that are produced by the poles of the hybrid electromagnet, which means, if time delay occurs for calculation of permanence parameters, actual force and actual torque …

Using Latent Semantic Analysis For Automated Keyword Extraction From Large Document Corpora, Tuğba Önal Süzek Jan 2017

Using Latent Semantic Analysis For Automated Keyword Extraction From Large Document Corpora, Tuğba Önal Süzek

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we describe a keyword extraction technique that uses latent semantic analysis (LSA) to identify semantically important single topic words or keywords. We compare our method against two other automated keyword extractors, Tf-idf (term frequency-inverse document frequency) and Metamap, using human-annotated keywords as a reference. Our results suggest that the LSA-based keyword extraction method performs comparably to the other techniques. Therefore, in an incremental update setting, the LSA-based keyword extraction method can be preferably used to extract keywords from text descriptions from big data when compared to existing keyword extraction methods.

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A huge collection of textual, graphical, audio, and video contents are readily available on the Internet to be used for the purpose of learning. Sentimental feedbacks of learners posted at the end of many of these contents may be considered as genuine reactions of the learners who have gone through the contents. Such learners' sentiments are important inputs for judging the acceptability of a learning material. Analyzing such feedbacks using sentiment analysis techniques can identify the best reusable learning contents that may be used for developing new courseware. This can significantly reduce the time and effort of authoring, which is …

The Use Of Clitic Pronouns And Clitic Climbing By Intermediate-Level Learners = El Uso De Pronombres Cliticos Y El Ascenso De Clitico Por Los Alumnos De Nivel Intermedio, Ryan Royer Jan 2017

The Use Of Clitic Pronouns And Clitic Climbing By Intermediate-Level Learners = El Uso De Pronombres Cliticos Y El Ascenso De Clitico Por Los Alumnos De Nivel Intermedio, Ryan Royer

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Clitic pronouns, such as 'lo tengo' [I have it], create difficulties for English speakers who learn Spanish as a second language. English places clitic pronouns after verbs (enclisis), but Spanish requires them before conjugated verbs (proclisis) in simple structures. In complex structures, such as 'lo quiero tener/quiero tenerlo' [I want to have it], Spanish has two possibilities: both proclisis (or clitic climbing) and enlisis are correct. The preferences of Spanish speakers regarding clitic climbing have been well studied. Enclisis is more prevalent in writing while proclisis is more common in speech (56% clitic climbing in speech, 23% in writing; Davies, …

Cultural Model(S) Of Society In Western Ukraine, Nadiia Biletska Jan 2017

Cultural Model(S) Of Society In Western Ukraine, Nadiia Biletska

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines people's implicit assumptions about society in Western Ukraine manifested in discourses on the subject. The discourse data were elicited via in-depth interviews with people from diverse backgrounds in Lviv region. The thesis uses cultural models theory and methods in cognitive anthropology as the primary analytical framework. Specifically, it examines the hypothesis that historically different socially-mediated experiences that resulted from the disintegration of the USSR and subsequent societal developments in independent Ukraine were conducive to differences in mental representations of society among different generational cohorts. Evidence of three distinct conceptualizations---cultural models---of society were found. These models were variously …

Natural Language Processing And Syntactic Differentiation : A Corpus Case Study, Melissa Wright Jan 2017

Natural Language Processing And Syntactic Differentiation : A Corpus Case Study, Melissa Wright

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzed syntactic structures retrieved from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Specifically, the constituents and parts of speech within two types of text in the novel -- dialogue and descriptive/explanatory -- were examined, with the hypotheses that, between the dialogue and the descriptive texts within the narrative, one type would display longer syntactic structures and more embedded clauses, and that specific conjunctions occur more frequently within structures with these clauses. This study utilized natural language processing (NLP) to investigate syntactic length and frequency of parts of speech in the character dialogue and descriptive passages in this narrative. …

When They Say, "Where Is Your God?", Carmen Klopfenstein Jan 2017

When They Say, "Where Is Your God?", Carmen Klopfenstein

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The widespread tenor within evangelical denominations toward homosexuality maintains that opening up discussion regarding homosexuality is to blatantly deny the authority of God's word. As a member of the LGBTQ community, my exodus from the Christian circle in which I was raised was an inevitable result of the discourse structuring that worldview, which declares that homosexuality unquestionably negates one's relationship with God. Currently, no middle ground exists regarding this tenet; the evangelical discourse labels those who do not conform, as well as those who try to speak out against this verdict, as deceived and unsaved. My manuscript counters evangelicalism's rigid …

A Multiple Case Study : Gauging The Effects Of Poverty On School Readiness Amongst Preschoolers, Melissa J. Onesto

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The home environment, which includes the level of organization and stability in the home, plays a crucial role in the development of executive function and oral language skills. For children who live in a low-SES environment, executive function and oral language acquisition are inferior compared to that of students living at other economic levels. Executive function, which assists with attentional and inhibitory control, is underdeveloped in children who live in poverty. Stressors in the home environment influence joint attention during infancy, and receptive and expressive language skills are further thwarted during early childhood. Working memory, another component of executive function, …

(Re)Inventing Mathematical Logic : A Case Study Of Set-Based Meanings For Conditional Truth, Alec William Hub

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The way students interpret mathematical sentences involving logical connectives sometimes differs from the way mathematicians interpret such sentences. This research study identifies and analyzes some understandings that one student constructed while interpreting conditional statements relating to numerical relationships and geometric shape categories. Through a modified teaching experiment, a pair of students were guided to reinvent normative understandings of truth-functional logic, namely that of material conditionals (conditional statements) and their contrapositive's equivalence. Through the case study of Hugo, the researcher identifies shifts in his reasoning about conditional statements that gave rise to set-based meanings for conditional truth, as well as the …
