Issues In The Conceptualization Of Intercultural Communication Competence, Guo-Ming Chen
Issues In The Conceptualization Of Intercultural Communication Competence, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Scholars from different disciplines have produced a large amount of studies on the concept of intercultural communication competence (ICC) since its beginning a half century ago. While agreement on the basic nature of ICC has been reached among scholars, more new problems regarding the conceptualization, operationalization, and application of the concept continue to arise because of the impact of technological development and globalization trend. This chapter attempts to address these problems by focusing on the conceptual issues for the study of ICC. Six conceptual issues in the study of ICC are examined: 1. the meaning of ICC, 2. trait vs. …

Inscribed Administrative Material Culture And The Development Of The Umayyad State In Syria-Palestine 661-750 Ce, Tareq Ramadan
Wayne State University Dissertations
The seventh century CE in the Near East was a period characterized by major political transition and cultural change, representing an era that witnessed the decline of the region’s long-standing major political institutions alongside the emergence of a powerful Arab Caliphate that supplanted both the offices of the Byzantine Emperor and the Persian, Sasanid Shah in most or all of the region. This Arab Caliphate, first based out of the Hejaz, then out of Syria-Palestine with the rise of the Umayyads (r. 661-750 CE), Islam’s first hereditary dynasty, embarked on a successful campaign of Arab and Muslim hegemony across three …

OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION
by
JULIANNE SNIDER
August 2016
Advisor: Dr. Karen Feathers
Major: Reading, Language, and Literature
Degree: Doctor of Education
This qualitative study explored teacher answers to one question: What factors influence teachers’ decisions to use, or not use, small group discussion. Research supports a variety of small group discussion approaches to meet a range of curricular goals. Despite the philosophical move to student-centered discussion approaches, and research supporting small group discussion as an effective literacy approach, teacher led whole class discussion continues as the dominant approach. An online teacher …

The Title Of Liberty And Ancient Prophecy, Roseann Benson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Captain Moroni cites a prophecy regarding Joseph of Egypt and his posterity that is not recorded in the Bible. He accompanies the prophecy with a symbolic action to motivate his warriors to covenant to be faithful to their prophet Helaman and to keep the commandments lest God would not preserve them as he had Joseph.
Meeting Student Needs: Integrating Spanish Heritage Language Learners Into The Second Language Classroom, Clara Burgo
Meeting Student Needs: Integrating Spanish Heritage Language Learners Into The Second Language Classroom, Clara Burgo
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Despite the increase of Spanish heritage language (HL) courses in response to the linguistic needs of HL learners, these courses often combine this student population with advanced second language (L2) learners. This common scenario presents a challenge to many instructors who lack the training to negotiate intercultural and linguistic issues in the classroom so that all students can benefit. This essay presents key intercultural concerns (e.g., embarrassment and intimidation) and suggests strategies for instructors. Twenty-first-century students will work in collaborative contexts, so they must learn how to benefit from their classmates’ strengths and work on their weaknesses through peer interaction …

Heritage Language And Culture: The Cleveland Slovenian Experience, Kristen Burns, Lacey Difranco, Sam Paskert, Joe Peal, Dallas Turner
Undergraduate Research Posters 2017
Slovenians have played an important role in the history of Cleveland. From their origins being centered around St. Clair Avenue to their more dispersed state today, Cleveland is home to the largest population of Slovenians outside of Slovenia itself. Our study sought to explore the differences and similarities between native and heritage Slovenians. For data collection we used the picture word recognition test, sentence acceptability judgements test, and the cultural questionnaire. We designed these tests to study the Slovenian Clevelander community and shed on the understudied subjects of “heritage linguistics” and “language attrition”. Heritage speakers, or speakers that learned a …
“How Could This Happen To Us?” French Community And Sault Ste. Marie’S English Resolution, Michael Graydon
“How Could This Happen To Us?” French Community And Sault Ste. Marie’S English Resolution, Michael Graydon
Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region
In January, 1990 Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, a northern city with over 200 hundred years of French settlement, passed a resolution declaring its city government would operate in English-only. Accounts of how this language specific resolution came about are often, even inescapably overshadowed by the character and actions of the city’s brash, defiant Mayor, Joe Fratesi. This paper presents an expanded account of events, wherein Mayor Fratesi is one of many actors, albeit one ready to maximize a political opportunity.
To existing accounts, this paper adds the voices and experiences of those within the French community, ones largely absent in …
Textile Terminology In Old High German Between Inherited And Loan Words, Roland Schuhmann
Textile Terminology In Old High German Between Inherited And Loan Words, Roland Schuhmann
Textile Terminologies from the Orient to the Mediterranean and Europe, 1000 BC to 1000 AD
A particular language consists of course not only of words inherited from its respective parent language but contains also a certain amount of loan words (however, this amount differs depending on the respective language). This universal principle then also holds true for the speakers of the Germanic languages. The vocabulary of the Germanic languages includes not only the lexicon inherited from Proto‑Indo‑European but a range of languages later on heavily influenced it. In the times before the documentation of the Germanic languages, the two most important sources that influenced the Germanic lexicon were Celtic and (prolonged) Latin. Influence in the …

Terminology Associated With Silk In The Middle Byzantine Period (Ad 843-1204), Julia Galliker
Textile Terminologies from the Orient to the Mediterranean and Europe, 1000 BC to 1000 AD
During the 1st millennium AD, silk became the most desirable fibre in the Mediterranean region. While the expansion of silk production and consumption is widely acknowledged, specific features of the industry’s development are more difficult to discern. Chroniclers had little reason to document silk manufacturing processes, and producers were not inclined to record or publicise their trade secrets. Historical knowledge of silk comes mainly from accounts of its consumption in a variety of forms and contexts.
For the middle Byzantine period (AD 843-1204), the two most elaborated sources associated with silk date from the 10th century. The Book of the …
The Textile Term Gammadia, Maciej Szymaszek
The Textile Term Gammadia, Maciej Szymaszek
Textile Terminologies from the Orient to the Mediterranean and Europe, 1000 BC to 1000 AD
This paper aims to investigate the origin of the term gammadia by determining the oldest examples of its use both in source texts and secondary literature.1 For nearly four centuries this term was commonly applied to the various motifs on mantles of figures represented in art of the 1st millennium AD.2 These right-angled and letter-like signs attracted the attention of several authors who were seeking to explain their possible symbolic meaning, but they did not pay attention to the correctness of the term adapted to name such motifs.3 This approach contributed to the terminological confusion and difficulties in understanding the …

The Opioid Epidemic In The United States With A Focus On Ohio, Timothy A. Netters Jr.
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
The rate of deaths due to opioid drug overdoses has increased substantially in the 21st-century United States and shows no signs of slowing down. Goleman (1987) stated that opioid drugs are not inherently dangerous when used for their specified purpose of relief of moderate to severe acute pain. However, when they are abused, mixed with other drugs, or their stronger counterparts, used for chronic pain or are used without understanding of their increased strength the effects can be devastating. Ohio is unfortunately no stranger to the problem of opiate abuse and overdose. Counties throughout Ohio have had to add additional …

Association Of Cadmium Exposure With Bone Mineral Density In U.S. Adults, Joseph P. Taggart
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal and environmental pollutant; general population exposure is through occupation, diet, and smoking. Cadmium is associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) and higher risk of fractures in women. This association is not fully known in men.
Objective: Given the toxicity and global dispersion of cadmium, we explored its association with BMD in U.S. men and women.
Methods: Data from 914 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014 was utilized. Multivariable regression analysis was used to determine the independent association between cadmium exposure and BMD controlling for age, body mass index, …
Write Like A Patent Litigator: Avoid Common Mistakes Made By Non-Patent Lawyers, 17 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 141 (2017), Ted L. Field
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Following, or not following, conventions as an attorney may lead to a question of credibility. Particularly with patent law, there are certain conventions and usage errors commonly made by practitioners who are not familiar with patent law. While these errors may be irrelevant in plain English, they are often important components in the specialized language of patent law. This article discusses the importance of these components by examining examples of particular usages that often give rise to error.

From the use of the word “thug ” by journalists to describe #BlackLivesMatter protesters, to calling trans women such as Caitlyn Jenner “he/she” or even “it,” to seemingly mundane stories about urban food deserts, coverage of matters that explicitly or implicitly reflect issues of socially constructed differences present ethical concerns for journalists and audiences alike. Covering stories highlighting issues of race, ethnicity, gender identity or sexual orientation, and so forth is challenging because of the many ethical issues that arise. Yet ethical issues related to diversity or socially constructed differences may occur in nearly any news story. In this chapter, …

L2 Learners’ Engagement With Direct Written Corrective Feedback In First- Year Composition Courses, Izabela Uscinski
Journal of Response to Writing
This study explores students’ response to direct written corrective feedback (WCF) in first-year composition courses. To that end, it focuses on analyzing students’ engagement with direct feedback and meta-awareness of the corrections provided on one of their drafts. Data include students’ revisions recorded with screen-capture software and the video-stimulated recall, which was transcribed and coded for evidence of engagement and meta-awareness. The findings of the study indicate that students’ engagement and meta-awareness may be affected by pedagogical factors, such as feedback delivery method. Based on the insights gained from this study, the author suggests that direct feedback may be more …

“I Could Express Feeling Completely”: Inviting L2 Writers To Use L1 In Peer Responses, Bee Chamcharatsri
Journal of Response to Writing
Peer response is one of the most important activities in writing classrooms because it provides a sense of audience to students. At the same time, students also receive feedback for revision. Asking L2 writers to use their L1s in providing feedback to their L1-speaking peers helps them gain confidence in peer response activities, which in turn gives them self-confidence in their writing proficiency. In this small-scale pilot project, L2 students were asked to reflect on their use of L1s providing both oral and written feedback. They reported that students felt they could express their feedback in a more meaningful way. …

A Right Without A Remedy: Time Runs Out Before The Right To File Accrues For Successive Habeas Corpus Petitioners, Agnieszka Chiapperini
St. Thomas Law Review
"An inscription on the walls of the Department of Justice states the proposition candidly for the federal domain: 'The United States wins its point whenever justice is done its citizens in the courts."" The importance that finality of convictions has on our society comes only second to ensuring that those who were convicted and sentenced were treated fairly. The availability of post-conviction relief to prisoners is a vital function of our criminal justice system, not as a means of "loopholes" criminals can use to be set free, but to ensure that all of our citizens are treated justly and within …

This paper examines, through a case study, how the Specification of Generic (Foundation) Competencies – English (SGC-Eng) provides clear and objective standards for developing language curricula. A suite of 30 in-service English certificate programmes using 18 Units of Competency (UoCs) were launched for various industry sectors in the Vocational English Enhancement Programme1 (VEEP) from 2012 to 2015. It offers a unique experience and the best opportunity to study the value of the SGC-Eng in organizing and delivering vocational English modules. Descriptive accounts and documentation on the VEEP were analysed to shed light on the potentials and inadequacies of the SGC-Eng. …

Translation Of Power And Solidarity Pronouns In Qur’Anic Rhetoric, Amin Amirdabbaghian
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Translation of the Holy Quran can be difficult for translators in terms of accuracy and translatability. Sometimes translators fail to render the Quranic thoughts because of the lack of language features in target languages. This results in an unfavorable interpretation. One of the challenging aspects of translating Quran is reference switching as rhetorical devices, which are widespread in the book due to the aesthetic aspects of the Arabic language. Rendering rhetorical devices may lead to misinterpreting the Quran as the target languages might not have the same context as Arabic. The ongoing research discovers several rhetorical problems in the English …

Standalone corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports vary considerably in the content of information released due to their voluntary nature. In this study, we develop a disclosure score based on the tone, readability, length, and the numerical and horizon content of CSR report narratives, and examine the relationship between the CSR disclosure scores and analyst forecasts. We find that CSR reporters with high disclosure scores are associated with more accurate forecasts, whereas low score CSR reporters are not associated with more accurate forecasts than firms who do not issue CSR reports. The findings are robust to controlling for firm characteristics including …

The historical information of loadings on substation helps in evaluation of size of photovoltaic (PV) generation and energy storages for peak shaving and distribution system upgrade deferral. A method, based on consumption data, is proposed to separate the unusual consumption and to form the clusters of similar regular consumption. The method does optimal partition of the load pattern data into core points and border points, high and less dense regions, respectively. The local outlier factor, which does not require fixed probability distribution of data and statistical measures, ranks the unusual consumptions on only the border points, which are a few …

Effects Of A Technology-Assisted Reading Comprehension Intervention For English Learners With Learning Disabilities, Sara L. Jozwik, Karen H. Douglas
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study integrated technology tools into a reading comprehension intervention that used explicit instruction to teach strategies (i.e., asking questions, making connections, and coding the text to monitor for meaning) to mixed-ability small groups, which included four English Learners with learning disabilities in a fourth-grade general education classroom. We used a multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate the effects of instruction on strategy application as measured through comprehension rubrics (Keene, 2006) and on comprehension-question answering as measured through researcher-developed literal and inferential comprehension questions. Results showed that participants applied comprehension strategies and improved their percentage accuracy with answering comprehension …
