According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the literacy and numeracy skills that are distributed across a population will have significant impact on economic and social outcomes. In particular, the “higher the levels of inequality in literacy and numeracy skills … the greater the inequality of distribution of income” (OECD, 2013, p. 26). However, although literacy skills are important, it has been suggested that poor mathematical skills may be more of a handicap than poor literacy skills, especially in the workplace (Butterworth, 2005; McCloskey, 2007). As McCloskey (2007) notes, “… quantitative concepts and information are involved in …

Managing Military Readiness, Laura J. Junor Feb 2017

Managing Military Readiness, Laura J. Junor

INSS Strategic Perspectives

Understanding the limits of the Nation’s ability to generate and deploy ready military forces is a basic element of national security. It is also the element most likely to be taken for granted or assumed away despite ample historical evidence of the human and operational costs imposed by such an error. As budgets shrink and threats grow more diverse, national security leaders need a specific accounting of the readiness limits of the force and the consequences of those limits as well as the insight to make timely and effective mitigation decisions.

Praying About Forgiveness In Japanese, English, And Beyond Words: Bilingualism As An Underexplored Resource For Christian Spiritual Formation, Andrea Lundquist Johnson Feb 2017

Praying About Forgiveness In Japanese, English, And Beyond Words: Bilingualism As An Underexplored Resource For Christian Spiritual Formation, Andrea Lundquist Johnson

Doctor of Ministry

Prayer understood as a form of communication and communion with the Deity is a nearly universal human activity and a core Christian practice. Christian prayer may take many shapes including colloquial, petitionary, ritual, and meditative, and may be practiced alone or with others. Prayer regarding forgiveness is both the example and command of Jesus, yet forgiveness is multidimensional, complex, and culturally conditioned in addition to being difficult because it involves change in self identity.

The question of whether the language of prayer matters for bilinguals, specifically Japanese/English speaking bilinguals, has not been researched. Neither has the area of bilingual prayer …

Recurrent Neural Networks With Auxiliary Labels For Cross-Domain Opinion Target Extraction, Ying Ding, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang Feb 2017

Recurrent Neural Networks With Auxiliary Labels For Cross-Domain Opinion Target Extraction, Ying Ding, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Opinion target extraction is a fundamental task in opinion mining. In recent years, neural network based supervised learning methods have achieved competitive performance on this task. However, as with any supervised learning method, neural network based methods for this task cannot work well when the training data comes from a different domain than the test data. On the other hand, some rule-based unsupervised methods have shown to be robust when applied to different domains. In this work, we use rule-based unsupervised methods to create auxiliary labels and use neural network models to learn a hidden representation that works well for …

Protean Statutory Interpretation In The Courts Of Appeals, James J. Brudney, Lawrence Baum Feb 2017

Protean Statutory Interpretation In The Courts Of Appeals, James J. Brudney, Lawrence Baum

William & Mary Law Review

This Article is the first in-depth empirical and doctrinal analysis of differences in statutory interpretation between the courts of appeals and the Supreme Court. It is also among the first to anticipate how the Supreme Court’s interpretive approach may shift with the passing of Justice Scalia.

We begin by identifying factors that may contribute to interpretive divergence between the two judicial levels, based on their different institutional structures and operational realities. In doing so, we discuss normative implications that may follow from the prospect of such interpretive divergence. We then examine how three circuit courts have used dictionaries and legislative …

Immigrant Covering, Stella Burch Elias Feb 2017

Immigrant Covering, Stella Burch Elias

William & Mary Law Review

Over the last ten years there has been a marked shift in U.S. immigration law away from reliance upon statutory authorization and regulatory provisions to subregulatory or “liminal” rules and discretionary decision-making. This trend is apparent in both federal immigration law and in state and local rulemaking affecting immigrant communities. This Article proposes a new theoretical framework within which to analyze this phenomenon. It uses “covering,” a legal theory first developed in the context of employment discrimination and equal protection, as a lens through which to view these recent developments in immigration law and policy. It shows how immigration laws …

Dual Language Education And Student Achievement, Andrew Bibler Feb 2017

Dual Language Education And Student Achievement, Andrew Bibler

ISER Reports

Dual language classrooms provide English language learners (ELLs) an opportunity to receive instruction in their native language in hopes of easing the transition to English fluency, and provide an opportunity for native English speakers to receive instruction in a second language. For ELLs, learning in their native language could improve achievement by helping them build a stronger foundation in core subjects, but could also have a negative impact through delayed growth in English skills. For native English speakers, communication barriers could hurt achievement, but many argue that mental stimulation from speaking two languages leads to greater cognitive growth. Empirical testing …

A Strategy To Improve Egyptian Elementary Stage Esol Student’S Speaking Skills Using Role-Play., Hania Mahmoud Ezz

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the present study was to develop the English-speaking skills of elementary stage, ESOL students through designing a strategy based on role-playing. The speaking skills test included the sub-skills such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. The participants of the study were 24 students. The two-group research design was adopted where the control group (12 students) followed the regular class technique and the experimental group (12 students) followed the role-playing strategy. A pre- and post-test of speaking skills was administered to the participants of both groups to measure the effectiveness of the strategy on students’ speaking skills. …

The Image Of Turkey In Egyptian Media: Content And Discourse Analysis Of The Coverage In Three Egyptian Newspapers, Mohamed Moustafa Gameel Ebada Feb 2017

The Image Of Turkey In Egyptian Media: Content And Discourse Analysis Of The Coverage In Three Egyptian Newspapers, Mohamed Moustafa Gameel Ebada

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the image of Turkey in Egyptian newspapers by conducting a content and discourse analysis of three Egyptian newspapers, Al-Ahram, El-Shorouk, and Almasry Alyoum, from January 2012 to December 2014. Based on previous literature, this study applied two theoretical frameworks: 1) Benedict Anderson's hypnosis of imagined communities and 2) media framing theory. To apply media framing, the Semetko and Valkenburg (2000) framing scale was employed. Following that, a rhetorical discourse was used to investigate Anderson's thesis. The study's finding matched Semetko and Valkenburg's framing scale. Both indicated that the attribution of responsibility is the most frequent frame in …

Chicana/Latina Feminist Critical Qualitative Inquiry Meditations On Global Solidarity, Spirituality, And The Land, Cinthya M. Saavedra, Michelle Salazar Perez

Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications

In this article we take a journey into using Chicana/Latina feminisms as one way to unearth new possibilities for critical qualitative inquiry (CQI). We start by offering a brief overview of Gloria Anzaldua’s influence on Chicana/Latina feminism, focusing on how she has inspired researching and writing from within rather than about as a decolonial turn (Keating, 2015). We then venture into new imaginaries to pose questions that would lead us to ponder about global feminista solidarity, the spirit, and the land. Our hope is that these contemplations lead us on a path of conocimiento where we can put the broken …

Zurich And The Birth Of French Surrealism, Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Paris has long been regarded as the artistic and literary capital of the world. Yet little known is the historical fact that Zurich played an equally fundamental and key role in the development of modern art, the birth of the avant-garde in literature and the arts, and the advent of French Surrealism.

Civil Law Pulsations Along The Latin American Periphery, Ángel R. Oquendo Feb 2017

Civil Law Pulsations Along The Latin American Periphery, Ángel R. Oquendo

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

The civil law system shows its true face as it travels from the Continental European core to the Latin American periphery. Many of the principal institutions have found a home and thrived in the new and radically different environment. One can best study them there by contemplating how they have preserved some of their most basic features despite having transformed themselves into something else.

The notion of the civil law tradition and that of codification have themselves undergone this dialectic of transformation and preservation. So have the traditional approach to contractual interpretation and to third-party agreements and the common proscriptions …

On Forgiveness: Phenomenon And Norms, Wassim Abdelmasseh Feb 2017

On Forgiveness: Phenomenon And Norms, Wassim Abdelmasseh

Theses and Dissertations

This paper takes a close look at forgiveness. As the title suggests, this paper is divided in two sections. The first section provides a description and an understanding of the phenomenon of forgiveness. This is done first by considering how various philosophical accounts have done so. This is then followed by a phenomenological description of what forgiveness is and what forgiveness does. For this purpose the paper also considers other concepts that are related to forgiveness, namely those of guilt and resentment. In the second section of the paper the norms of forgiveness are investigated. Two elementary normative conditions of …

A Whole New Wurld? How Unusual Brand Name Spelling Negatively Affects Sensory Perceptions Of New Products Through Cognitive And Affective Processing, Ann E. Mcneel Feb 2017

A Whole New Wurld? How Unusual Brand Name Spelling Negatively Affects Sensory Perceptions Of New Products Through Cognitive And Affective Processing, Ann E. Mcneel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Introducing the importance of unusual brand name spelling to sensory marketing, this research shows that utilizing the linguistic device of unique brand name spelling can lead to differences in sensory perceptions and actual consumption of a variety of consumer products. Across five studies, we explore how perceptions of the uniqueness of a brand name can be achieved by varying one letter in the spelling of the brand name, and that such a small variation can result in less favorable sensory perceptions of taste (studies 1 and 3), scent (study 2), and vision (studies 4 and 5) as a result of …
