Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan Mar 2017

Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan

Natural Resources Journal

Throughout the world water plays a central role in the spirituality of indigenous peoples. Focusing on the American West, this article first describes how tribal water needs touch upon the sacred and then explains how both federal law and state prior appropriation doctrine fail to adequately protect these important sacred views of water. Pivoting away from the classic federal law arguments, the article then advocates for an evolution in state water law regimes to provide yet unrecognized protections for tribal sacred waters. Because international law plays an increasing role in this issue, the article also explores case studies from Ireland, …

Mobility And Academic Literacies : An Epistolary Conversation., Jan Blommaert, Bruce Horner Mar 2017

Mobility And Academic Literacies : An Epistolary Conversation., Jan Blommaert, Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In what follows, we explore the implications of a mobilities perspective for the conceptualization, teaching, and study of academic literacies. Mobility has come to serve as a catalyst for rethinking scholarly work in a variety of fields – most provocatively, the assumed stability as well as uniformity of what is studied and the location and products of acts and actors of study. The concept of academic literacies aligns with a mobilities perspective in its challenge to a still-dominant conception of ‘literacy’ as singular, universal, uniform, and stable. However, in recognition that any attempt to define mobility, academic literacies, or ‘mobility …

Why Stay? A Phenomenological Look At Special Education Teacher Retention, Jennifer J. Lesh, Karen Shatz, Judy Harris-Looby, Catherine Roberts

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

This phenomenological study examined the teaching experiences of veteran special education teachers (SETs) and why they chose to remain in a special education teaching setting. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems framework, veteran SETs were interviewed and asked to describe the experiences and situations that have influenced their decision to remain in special education. Three themes and two sub-categories emerged as their motivation for persevering: (A) a calling from above, (B) standing up for the underdog, (b) personally committed to my kids, my babies, (C) beating the bushes with the apathetic, (c) against my ethical judgment. Specific information related to these …

Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice

The tremendous Latino growth combined with the challenges of living in a nontraditional migration area make Latinos, particularly those who are undocumented, a “difficult-to-reach” and understudied population in research. We describe the development and practice of an immigrant community research team created to investigate and improve research quality regarding health-related needs, beliefs, and behaviors of recent Latino immigrants living in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our community research team, Latinos Unidos por la Salud (LU-Salud), is composed of Latino immigrant community members and academic researchers working in a health research partnership. The community team members are considered “co-researchers” since LU-Salud was designed within …

Delicate Moments: Kids Talk About Socially Complicated Issues, Amy Bauman

Occasional Paper Series

Early adolescents showed the author that developing a complex understanding of oneself in the world requires ample opportunities to publicly speak one's own story in the presence of a mindful listener. The story that follows is as much about creating spaces for students to craft social understandings as it is about political conclusions. It is about the ways in which adults ask children questions, and the ways children answer. Finally, it is about the nature of silence and the ambivalence of speaking.

Solving Frege’S Substitution Puzzle: Analyzing It In Light Of Descriptivism And Direct Reference Theory, Ayesha Rehman Feb 2017

Solving Frege’S Substitution Puzzle: Analyzing It In Light Of Descriptivism And Direct Reference Theory, Ayesha Rehman

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

Although replacing one proper name with another that refers to the same person does not change the truth-value of a declarative statement, it affects the truth-value of propositional attitude reports, which are cognitive relations that people hold towards propositions. Frege’s Substitution Puzzle about propositional attitude reports essentially asks an important question: if two proper names co-refer in a certain linguistic community, then why does their intersubstitutability produce propositional attitude reports (that contain those proper names) with opposite truth-values? This paper attempts to explain how Description Theory of Names and Direct Reference Theory, two theories of proper names, solve Frege’s Substitution …

Knowledge Is Knowing Frankenstein Isn’T The Monster, Wisdom Is Knowing Frankenstein Is The Monster: An Exploration On Mankind And Monstrosity, Alexandra Melnick Feb 2017

Knowledge Is Knowing Frankenstein Isn’T The Monster, Wisdom Is Knowing Frankenstein Is The Monster: An Exploration On Mankind And Monstrosity, Alexandra Melnick

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

Humans construct their identity by constantly measuring themselves against and creating themselves around culturally ingrained systems of rules governing the social, the political, and perceptions of the physical. I call a system of rules a “syntax.” When a syntactical system is broken, a monster is born. Our monsters are the litmus and definition of our selves. Using Michel Foucault’s Abnormal lectures to inform my theory of the self as “syntax,” I posit that it is essential to understand the monster in order to exert social change and it is essential to understand what a monster is in order to understand …

The Relationship Of Education And Acculturation With Vigorous Intensity Leisure Time Physical Activity By Gender In Latinos, Erick B. Lopez, Takashi Yamashita

Sociology Faculty Research

Objectives: Latinos have poorer health outcomes among certain conditions (e.g. diabetes, obesity, mental health) compared to non-Latino Whites in the U.S., in part due to difference in the amount of physical activity, which are heavily influenced by sociocultural factors such as educational attainment and acculturation. Vigorous-intensity leisure time physical activity (VLTPA) may provide health benefits with a shorter amount of time than moderate-to-light physical activity. However, VLTPA has been significantly understudied compared to LTPA in general. The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between educational attainment, acculturation, and VLTPA by gender among Latino adults in the U.S. …

Comparative Study On The In Vitro Effects Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Seaweed Alginates On Human Gut Microbiota, Shaofeng Bai, Huahai Chen, Liying Zhu, Wei Liu, Hongwei Yu, Xin Wang, Yeshi Yin

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Alginates pertain to organic polysaccharides that have been extensively used in food- and medicine-related industries. The present study obtained alginates from an alginate overproducing Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 mutant by screening transposon mutagenesis libraries. The interaction between bacterial and seaweed alginates and gut microbiota were further studied by using an in vitro batch fermentation system. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) analysis indicated that both bacterial and seaweed alginates can be completely degraded by fecal bacteria isolated from study volunteers, indicating that a minor structural difference between bacterial and seaweed alginates (O-acetylation and lack of G-G blocks) didn’t affect the digestion of alginates by …
