The Reciprocal Effects Of Language Proficiency And Depression Among Low Income Latino Youth, Nicole Colon Quintana
The Reciprocal Effects Of Language Proficiency And Depression Among Low Income Latino Youth, Nicole Colon Quintana
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Extant research suggests that language plays an important role in both social processes and emotional encoding and regulation. In dual language youth, the maternal tongue has been observed as a protective factor against maladaptive outcomes (Toppelberg & Collins, 2010). Although Latino youth are at a heightened risk for depression (CDC, 2013), and a majority grow in Spanish-English speaking households (Pumariega et al., 2013), the impact of dual language development in their psychosocial well-being remains poorly understood. It is known that limited English language proficiency during early school years is predictive of maladaptive outcomes such as externalizing problems (Dawson & Williams, …
Understanding The Personalistic Aspects Of Jola Ethnomedicine, Theo Randall
Understanding The Personalistic Aspects Of Jola Ethnomedicine, Theo Randall
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This paper discusses the contemporary expression of the personalistic aspects of Jola ethnomedicine. Ethnomedicine pertains to the culturally specific health- associated beliefs and behaviors of a society. Personalistic pertains to medical beliefs and practices that associate disease with direct or intentional factors of a social and supernatural origin. The inherent personalistic aspects of contemporary Jola ethnomedicine are heavily associated with the contemporary religious beliefs and practices of the Jola. In the Gambia, Jola religious beliefs and practices reflect a synthesis of traditional Jola religion and Islam. Contemporary Jola religious beliefs and practices manifest themselves in contemporary Jola ethnomedical beliefs and …

Toward A Holistic, Intercultural, And Polyphonic Perspective On Health Care: A Brief Prologue To The Paper Titled “Understanding The Personalistic Aspects Of Jola Ethnomedicine.”, Fernando Paulo Baptista
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
As a prologue to the paper titled “Understanding the Personalistic Aspects of Jola Ethnomedicine,” the present essay provides a brief anthropologico-philosophical reflection, starting with classic Roman philosopher Seneca and his dictum that “each passing day we die,” and continuing on to the profound existential questions pondered by more contemporary thinkers, including Heidegger and Levinas, about life, death, being, time, totality, and infinity. These agonically deep questions are intimately related to the universal human angst about health, illness, and death and the seeking of a restoration to a functional corporal and mental harmony and well-being through various means and methods, whether …

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
This is a descriptive study of the health and hygiene behaviors of grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren in four West African countries, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The article utilizes data from each country’s most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The study identified 20,841 households where grandparents were primary caregivers. As expected, most of these households are in Nigeria given their population exceeds the collective population of the other three West African countries. However, the number of grandfamilies in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia is still worrisome for their population size. In each country, …
Culture And Politics: The Relationship Between The Modernist Intellectuals And The Brazilian State (1920–1950), Bruno Gontyjo Do Couto
Culture And Politics: The Relationship Between The Modernist Intellectuals And The Brazilian State (1920–1950), Bruno Gontyjo Do Couto
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This paper attempts to comprehend the existent connections between culture and politics in the development of modern nation-states. My reflection is based on a long-term analysis of the relations between intellectuals and political elites during the period of state building and nation building in Brazil (1822–1970). In this article, I intend to analyze specifically the period from 1920 to 1950, trying to understand the significance of the Brazilian intellectual movement designated as modernism and its influences over the cultural and political scenario. My hypothesis is that the cultural ideals of the modernist intellectuals were directly linked to political issues of …
An Analogy Explanation For The Evaluation Of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Ugur Uygur
An Analogy Explanation For The Evaluation Of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Ugur Uygur
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Entrepreneurs evaluate opportunities under conditions of uncertainty; they make judgments. In order to understand these evaluations, I develop an analogical model that represents an entrepreneurial opportunity in the mind of an individual. The model proposes that an opportunity is an analogical knowledge transfer from a source business domain to a target business domain. According to the model, the cognitive distance between the domains influences the opportunity evaluation. Additionally, the inspiration behind the analogy construction influences the opportunity evaluation. The empirical design employs a hypothetical scenario experiment and the results show that the two analogical properties matter for evaluation.

A Recently Recovered Source: Rethinking Joseph Smith’S Bible Translation, Haley Wilson, Thomas Wayment
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The following are a few key passages from the article we wrote together. When we first started the project our goal was the following: to compare the changes made by Joseph Smith to the Bible with contemporary commentaries of his day. In so doing I hope to tentatively reconstruct the 19th century academic Christian world in which he brought forth his Bible translation.

Navigating Behind The Shadows Of Steel: The Convergence And Divergence Of Identity And Language Among Latino Youth In Northwest Indiana, Scooter Pégram
Navigating Behind The Shadows Of Steel: The Convergence And Divergence Of Identity And Language Among Latino Youth In Northwest Indiana, Scooter Pégram
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
The region of Northwest Indiana is home to many thousands of Latinos, and this dynamic group has a long history in the area. As a group, issues relating to Latinos are well researched; however, primary investigations involving youth from the community are few. Influenced by the surrounding host and heritage cultures, young Latinos find themselves in a unique yet conflicting position as they navigate the parameters of both of these paradigms. This paper examines identity and language use amongst young Latinos in Northwest Indiana, and data are presented from a sociolinguistic intervention undertaken with 310 young Latinos from this region. …
National And International Indices Of Well-Being: A Critical Analysis, Donna Mclean
National And International Indices Of Well-Being: A Critical Analysis, Donna Mclean
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
Over the past decade, increasing effort has been made to develop both national and global indices of well-being. Much like earlier sustainability indices directed at questions of economics and environment, well-being metrics seek to chart the quality of life of citizens in order to (1) support administrative decision making and policy formation, (2) encourage consensus building and public participation in defining what’s important, (3) educate and advocate, and (4) facilitate research through data collection and analysis. This paper explores a number of indices of well-being, including the Canadian Index of Well-being, the OECD Your Better Life Index, and the Happy …

Cultural Diversity In The United States And Its Impact On Human Development, Jason Vanalstine, Steven R. Cox, Dianne M. Roden
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
Previous studies have yielded mixed results on the impact of cultural diversity on economic performance. We find a positive relationship in the United States between cultural diversity and a comprehensive measure of human development that incorporates health, education, and income. We also disaggregate cultural diversity into three components including ethnicity, language, and religion. We find a positive relationship between human development and both religious and language diversity, and a negative relationship with ethnic diversity. These relationships are robust, using several alternative mathematical measures of diversity. Our results are consistent with diversity generating benefits from exposure to a variety of experiences, …

The Impact Of An Elementary Algebra Course On Student Success In A College-Level Liberal Arts Math Course And Persistence In College, Lori Ann Austin
The Impact Of An Elementary Algebra Course On Student Success In A College-Level Liberal Arts Math Course And Persistence In College, Lori Ann Austin
Theses and Dissertations
Many students enter community college underprepared for college-level math and are placed into developmental elementary algebra without consideration if the algebra will provide a foundation for their needed college-level math course. Large percentages of those students are unable to succeed in the developmental course and, therefore, are unable to graduate (Bahr, 2008; Bailey, Jeong, & Cho, 2010). This quasi-experimental design focused on students who are not in math-intensive majors, needing only a general liberal arts math course. The purpose was to determine the impact of the elementary algebra course on success in college-level math and persistence in college. Student performance …

Calling An End To Culling: Predictive Coding And The New Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Stephanie Serhan
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
In corporate litigation and dispute resolution, discovery is often a significant undertaking for both the producing and requesting parties. Each party’s approach during discovery is usually guided by considerations regarding efficiency and accuracy during the process. One area of discovery in which parties prioritize these considerations is the implementation of predictive coding. Several studies have proven that the method of predictive coding is substantially more efficient and accurate than traditional methods of conducting discovery

"Danger, Will Robinson"? Artificial Intelligence In The Practice Of Law: An Analysis And Proof Of Concept Experiment, Daniel Ben-Ari, Yael Frish, Adam Lazovski
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
In this position paper, we seek to provide a preliminary outline of the ethical, legal, and social implications facing society in light of the growing engagement of artificial intelligence (“AI”) in our everyday lives as attorneys. In particular, we investigated these implications by developing, in collaboration with the IBM Watson team, a proof of concept. In this proof of concept, we aimed to specifically demonstrate the usefulness of AI in analyzing case law in the field of intellectual property, particularly within copyright fair use. To this end, we have extensively reviewed the relevant literature in an effort to pose pertinent …

Stalking The Lesson, Ministering The Family: Critical Interventions Of African American–American Indian Family History, Sakina Mariam Hughes
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
In 1900, Eva Shawnee, a Creek girl, enrolled in Hampton Normal and Agriculture Institute. Hampton aimed to uplift the black race through academics, industrial trades, and manual training. It opened its doors to Native Americans between 1878 and 1923; however, when Eva’s youngest siblings enrolled at Hampton, they registered as Negro. Traditional perspectives in American history, because of institutionalized racial hierarchies inside and outside the academy, provide challenges to the types of interdisciplinary scholarship that may address families like the Shawnees. Utilizing but transcending the academic sphere, this article encourages dialogue between marginalized groups and argues that they have more …

Popular Culture And Academic Literacies Situated In A Pedagogical Third Space, Stephanie Buelow
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This critical participatory action research study sought to understand what happens when students’ interest and experiences with popular culture are integrated into a standards-based sixth grade English language arts curriculum. Multiple data sources were analyzed using the theoretical concept of third space. Findings showed that (a) a democratic, collaborative learning zone was established for all members of the classroom community, (b) students were successful in a curriculum that was situated in academic literacies and their popular culture interests and literacies, and (c) this experience resulted in a transformation of teacher practice. Given the current educational climate, these findings suggest the …

A Socio-Psycholinguistic Perspective On Biliteracy: The Use Of Miscue Analysis As A Culturally Relevant Assessment Tool, Bobbie Kabuto
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Through the presentation of two bilingual reader profiles, this article will illustrate how miscue analysis can act as a culturally relevant assessment tool as it allows for the study of reading across different spoken and written languages. The research presented in this article integrates a socio-psycholinguistic perspective to reading and a translanguaging perspective to language use to highlight how differences in language and writing systems did not lead to difficulties or barriers in orally reading or comprehending texts. Contrarily, the use of miscue analysis was a culturally relevant assessment that provided a multidimensional perspective into the ways in which the …
