A Role And Reference Account Of Interrogative Sentences In Lakhota, Avelino Corral Esteban Jun 2017

A Role And Reference Account Of Interrogative Sentences In Lakhota, Avelino Corral Esteban

The ITB Journal

This article has investigated interrogative sentences in Lakhota within the framework of Role and Reference Grammar (hereafter RRG) (Van Valin, 1995; Van Valin and LaPolla, 1997), with the aim of explaining their structure as well as finding out the restrictions on ´wh´-question formation that this language exhibits. By means of this study, we will be able to verify the close relationship that also exists between the interrogative words and the indefinite pronouns in this language, see the constraints on linking in simple ´wh´-questions and give an account of the subjacency effects that block the formation of ´wh´-questions involving complex constructions. …

Wh-Interrogatives In Early L1 Greek: Comprehension Vs. Production, Evangelia K. Asproudi Jun 2017

Wh-Interrogatives In Early L1 Greek: Comprehension Vs. Production, Evangelia K. Asproudi

The ITB Journal

This paper examines the comprehension and production of wh-interrogatives in early L1 Greek. Specifically, children’s performance is explored at both levels with regard to argument/adjunct extraction and presence/absence of negation. In order to test the predicted lead of comprehension over production, a group of ninety four-to-seven-year old Greek children participated in elicitation tasks that were designed mainly along the methodological principles of Crain and Thornton (1998). On the whole, the results were in line with the initial expectation. That is, the Greek children performed better in question comprehension compared to question production, with individual findings suggesting that children’s economy-based processing …

Imaginative Methods: A Feminist Rereading Of John Maynard Keynes, Cassandra Forster-Broten Jun 2017

Imaginative Methods: A Feminist Rereading Of John Maynard Keynes, Cassandra Forster-Broten

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses a feminist lens to reveal aspects of the life of John Maynard Keynes that previous scholarship has missed. lt uses a feminist framework to view the connections between Keynes's lived experiences, beliefs, and work in a fuller and more nuanced way. The research highlights the importance of Keynes's sexuality, his connection to women and women's issues, and the significance of his relationships to friends, family, lovers, and colleagues. Feminist theory questions objectivity in knowledge production, argues for the importance of lived experience, and requires us to grapple with interconnected identities, which leads to a new interpretation of …

La Otra Cara Del Punk: Punk Rock And Resistance At The End Of The Argentine Guerra Sucia, 1981-1982, Alexander S. Javizian Jun 2017

La Otra Cara Del Punk: Punk Rock And Resistance At The End Of The Argentine Guerra Sucia, 1981-1982, Alexander S. Javizian

Open Access Theses

The origins of punk in Argentina grew from a distinctive socio-political context unlike its British and American counterparts. The country's final military dictatorship (1976-1983) was marked by a period of constant violence. After the 1976 coup d'état, a military dictatorship established power, vowing to fix many issues in the country, including the rampant violence and economic crisis that the government inherited from the previous administration of Isabel Perón. Although the military dictatorship intended to address the country's problems, it soon arose as one of the most oppressive regimes in the late 20th century that initiated a repressive movement known as …

An International Immersion Into Co-Teaching: A Wake-Up Call For Teacher Candidates In General And Special Education, Kevin Oh, Wendy Murawski, Natalie Nussli

School of Education Faculty Research

This case study explored the short-term international co-teaching experience of pre-service general education teachers who were paired up with intern special education teachers (N = 8) to provide English language instruction to students in South Korea. Pre-, during-, and post-data were collected to investigate how the participants experienced their co-teaching. The narratives of two participants were chosen for phenomenological analysis, reflecting an overwhelmingly positive and a rather negative co-teaching experience. The key ingredients to a successful partnership were identified as open communication, the willingness to accept both positive and negative feedback, the willingness to learn from or get inspired by …

Using Propositional Analysis To Assess Interpreting Quality, Yan Lydia Ding Jun 2017

Using Propositional Analysis To Assess Interpreting Quality, Yan Lydia Ding

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This article compares two methods of assessing interpreting quality: the holistic method and the proposed propositional analysis method. The author first summarizes previous research on interpreting quality, from which quality criteria were selected for holistic assessment. Following that, Turner and Greene’s (1978) proposition guideline is briefly introduced as a basis for propositional analysis. Third-year interpreting students were assigned an in-class interpreting task, and their interpreting outputs were recorded, transcribed, and assessed using both methods. Results showed that the two assessment methods agreed with each other in general; however, the propositional analysis method had a few advantages over the holistic assessment …

Tagmarks, Alexandra J. Roberts Jun 2017

Tagmarks, Alexandra J. Roberts

Law Faculty Scholarship

From Kentucky Fried Chicken’s #HowDoYouKFC campaign to viral fundraiser #IceBucketChallenge to Instagram phenomenon #TBT, hashtags as trademarks — I call them “tagmarks” — are having a moment. Given the resources that brands invest in marketing via social media, and specifically in choosing and using hashtags, it’s not surprising that some players have begun to seek federal trademark registration for those hashtags. By the end of 2015, companies had successfully registered two hundred tagmarks and sought protection for over a thousand others; the US Trademark Office granted more tagmark registrations in that year than it did in every previous year combined. …

Presence Of Daily Routine On Frequency Of Bizarre Dreams, And Online Study, Kevin Mcgowan Jun 2017

Presence Of Daily Routine On Frequency Of Bizarre Dreams, And Online Study, Kevin Mcgowan

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

In the hopes to further our body of knowledge on the effects of daily routines on dream content, my study aimed to measure both bizarre content in dreams and the routineness of participants’ day prior to dreaming. The method I am using to distinguish bizarre dreams from usual dreams was developed by Revonsou and Samilvalli (1995). Following this method, I first identified dream elements by categorized them into 14 categories; and then scored those dream elements for their bizarreness according to four types of bizarreness (Non-bizarre, Incongruous, Vague, or Discontinuous). I hypothesized that bizarre dreams would occur more frequently after …

Confessional Technologies Of The Self: From Seneca To Social Media, Norm Friesen Jun 2017

Confessional Technologies Of The Self: From Seneca To Social Media, Norm Friesen

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Foucault’s general notion of “technologies of the self” provides an invaluable starting point for investigating a range of broadly “confessional” practices and technologies over time — from medieval confession to contemporary forms of networked identity construction. Foucault defines technologies of the self as “reflected and voluntary practices by which men not only fix rules of conduct for themselves but seek to transform themselves, to change themselves in their particular being, and to make their life an oeuvre.” These are practices or techniques, in other words, that are both undertaken by the self and directed toward it. Specifically confessional technologies …

Investigating Linguistic, Literary, And Social Affordances Of L2 Collaborative Reading, Joshua Thoms, Frederick J. Poole

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This exploratory study analyzes learner–learner interactions within a virtual environment when collaboratively reading Spanish poetry in a Hispanic literature course at the college level via an ecological theoretical perspective (van Lier, 2004). The goals of the study are (a) to present empirical data that illustrate the theoretical construct of affordance in a virtual, collaborative reading environment, and (b) to investigate the pedagogical ramifications of using a digital annotation tool to involve learners in collaborative reading. Three distinct types of affordances emerged in the data: linguistic, literary, and social affordances. Our findings indicate that the number of literary and social affordances …

Non-Lieux Dans Le Roman Africain Postcolonial Francophone : Formes Et Enjeux, Adama Coulibaly Jun 2017

Non-Lieux Dans Le Roman Africain Postcolonial Francophone : Formes Et Enjeux, Adama Coulibaly

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

In the postcolonial African novel, new places are appearing, next to or replacing the former prison site. They can validly be read as «non-places» whose presence and implications in texts must then be questioned. Attempting a literary re-appropriation of an anthropological notion, this contribution analyzes three novels whose fictions are built around places of transit (of non-places) such as hotel, road and... container. These three figures of the non-place call for a writing of horizontality, rhizome, ephemeral, spatial mobility that reactivate the question of the fictitious or moving identity of the African subject from space.

Le Global Et Le Local : Réécriture De Paris Et Reconstruction D’Un Espace Esthétisé, Buata B. Malela

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article concerns the representation of Paris in the literary discourse of Michel Houellebecq and Alain Mabanckou. It is about placing space at the heart of our reflection to understand their production. Geocriticism approach brings them closer and makes it possible to show the coherence of their literary approach and the presence of space as the main literary subject.

Peer Teaching In A Thematic Unit On Russian Fairy Tales, Paavo Husen

Russian

The goals of the Russian fairy tale unit are to increase presentational, interpretive, and interpersonal communicative Russian skills by encouraging students to speak spontaneously in Russian, to express personal opinions, and to ask clarifying questions. This unit addresses reading, speaking, listening, and writing; truly an integrated task that can help to prepare students for the NEWL Russian (Prototype AP® Russian). Still another benefit of this unit is cultural; students become aware of and familiar with the characters, structure, and vocabulary of Russian fairy tales.

Discourses Of Death: The Influence Of Language On Capital Jurors’ Decisions., Robin Conley-Riner Jun 2017

Discourses Of Death: The Influence Of Language On Capital Jurors’ Decisions., Robin Conley-Riner

Journal of Criminal Justice and Law

This paper explores the role that language plays in capital jurors’ sentencing decisions. The research is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Texas death penalty trials, which included post-verdict interviews with jurors who served on those trials. A comparative linguistic analysis was conducted in which the language used in trial, including attorneys’ and judges’ talk in court and jurors’ written instructions, was compared with the language of jurors’ post-verdict interview responses. The paper explores how jurors negotiated the moral difficulty of sentencing another human being to death. The analysis reveals that jurors used language modeled for them in trial as a …
