A Tale Of Three Cities: Defining Urban Schools Within The Context Of Varied Geographic Areas, Connie Schaffer, Meg White, Corine M. Brown Jun 2017

A Tale Of Three Cities: Defining Urban Schools Within The Context Of Varied Geographic Areas, Connie Schaffer, Meg White, Corine M. Brown

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

What constitutes an urban school? This question has confounded social researchers and educators who often limit definitions to population data. H. Richard Milner suggested a framework for defining urban schools that includes population data as well as the racial and social context of schools. This article applied Milner’s model to school districts in New York, Nebraska, and New Mexico which exemplified Milner’s categories of urban schools: urban intensive, urban emergent, and urban characteristic. Application of the framework to the districts presents a model for teacher educators to deliver two important components of preservice preparation. First, the model can assist preservice …

Prelicensure International Immersion Illuminates Shared Professional Values And Discovery Of Nursing Voice In Cultural Humility, Gina B. Diaz, Paula Byrne, Edna Imperial Jun 2017

Prelicensure International Immersion Illuminates Shared Professional Values And Discovery Of Nursing Voice In Cultural Humility, Gina B. Diaz, Paula Byrne, Edna Imperial

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: This project"s purpose is to explore collaborative strategies for developing a sustainable international pre-licensure nursing educational experience. Nursing scholars and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) recognize that as our world becomes more culturally diverse, nurses will be the linchpin for transforming healthcare that is culturally flexible and responsive to the needs of patients and their families (ICN, 2013; Henly, 2016). The two goals of this project are (a) to deepen the student"s understanding of shared professional values and (b) develop the nursing voice. This project is framed by the assumption that when students are immersed into healthcare systems …

Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Youth: Needs For Health Risk Prevention Interventions?, Huey-Shys Chen, Ying Xue, Yu-Ku Chen, Yu-Han Zheng

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction

Although the number of sign language users in the United States has not been measured by census efforts, estimates range between 500,000 and 2 million users. 17.1% lost their hearing before age 19 and 6.6% lost their hearing before age 3. Compared with the hearing population, they have poor health knowledge and inequitable access to medical and behavioral care in our health system due to cultural and language barriers. The deaf populations are at high risk for health disparities.

Purpose

The purposes of this literature review are to synthesize current literature on health risk behaviors of deaf and hard-of-hearing …

Sidney Hook’S Pragmatic Anti-Communism: Commitment To Democracy As Method, Courtney Ferriter Jun 2017

Sidney Hook’S Pragmatic Anti-Communism: Commitment To Democracy As Method, Courtney Ferriter

Education and Culture

In recent years, opposition to Communism has emerged as Sidney Hook’s central philosophical legacy in the eyes of scholars and historians, who tend to ignore all of Hook’s pre-Cold War philosophical contributions. Furthermore, critics who treat Hook’s anti-Communism often accuse him of abandoning pragmatism for dogmatism in his later career. In this essay, I argue that Hook’s long-standing fight against Communism should be understood as an unwavering application of the democratic method in line with his mentor John Dewey’s understanding of pragmatism as well as the commitment to scientific empiricism espoused by earlier pragmatists C. S. Peirce and William James.

The Philosopher As Parent: John Dewey’S Observations Of His Children’S Language Development And The Development Of His Thinking About Communication, Jeremiah Dyehouse, Krysten Manke Jun 2017

The Philosopher As Parent: John Dewey’S Observations Of His Children’S Language Development And The Development Of His Thinking About Communication, Jeremiah Dyehouse, Krysten Manke

Education and Culture

Can John Dewey’s experiments at the University of Chicago’s Laboratory School teach contemporary inquirers about “learning by making?” This article warrants an affirmative answer to this query. Unlike intellectual historians who trace the source of Dewey’s and his colleagues’ 1890s pedagogies to their cultural biases, we contend that these experiments were substantially conditioned by pragmatic kinds of insights. Specifically, we argue that Dewey’s inquiries into own his children’s language development influenced the development of his early educational experiments as well as his later pragmatic communicative philosophy. On this view, the Laboratory School experiments anticipate Dewey’s later thinking about communication. If …

Water Politics And Religious Practices In Kangding, Nyimatashi Gongwei Yang Jun 2017

Water Politics And Religious Practices In Kangding, Nyimatashi Gongwei Yang

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This case study examines the use of water in Kangding, China. Kangding is a location in the Kham Himalaya which for centuries served as a strategic border area between Tibetan and Chinese worlds. As the discussion elaborates, an examination of the way that water has been used in the past and in the present demonstrates the dynamism of the religious practices prominent in locations such as Kangding. The study of water, and of the everyday religious practices with which it is associated, also intersects with growing resource management challenges that have come to the forefront during a contemporary period of …

Memory For Stimulus Sequences: A Divide Between Humans And Other Animals?, Ghirlanda Stefano, Johan Lind, Magnus Enquist Jun 2017

Memory For Stimulus Sequences: A Divide Between Humans And Other Animals?, Ghirlanda Stefano, Johan Lind, Magnus Enquist

Publications and Research

Humans stand out among animals for their unique capacities in domains such as language, culture and imitation, yet it has been difficult to identify cognitive elements that are specifically human. Most research has focused on how information is processed after it is acquired, e.g. in problem solving or ‘insight’ tasks, but we may also look for species differences in the initial acquisition and coding of information. Here, we show that non-human species have only a limited capacity to discriminate ordered sequences of stimuli. Collating data from 108 experiments on stimulus sequence discrimination (1540 data points from 14 bird and mammal …

Polytechnic Institute Summit

Short Abstract:

Robotics and the Internet of Things are intrinsically multi-disciplinary subjects that investigate the interaction between the physical and the cyber worlds and how they impact society. As a result, they not only demand careful consideration of digital and analog technologies, but also the human element. The “RIoT Zone” brings together disparate people and ideas to address intuitive autonomy.

Corruption, Legitimacy, And Stability: Implications For The U.S. Army, Shima D. Keene Dr. Jun 2017

Corruption, Legitimacy, And Stability: Implications For The U.S. Army, Shima D. Keene Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Corruption increases the level of instability and the risk of conflict by undermining the legitimacy and credibility of state institutions. It can be both a cause and effect of poor leadership and governance. States emerging from conflict are particularly vulnerable to corruption, due to the lack of good governance infrastructures; but Western interventions can exacerbate the problem through the unintended consequences of good intentions. For peacekeeping and state-building interventions to be effective, careful consideration must be given as to the reason the problem occurs, and to its broader impact, as well as ways to manage it. This Letort Paper suggests …

Proxy Decision-Making And Dementia Care: Exploring Decision-Makers' Thinking Using Construal Level Theory, Helen M. Convey, Janet Holt, Barbara Summers

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose:

Dementia is a syndrome which affects the individual"s ability to make decisions and to undertake everyday activities (ADI, 2015; WHO, 2012). A range of neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer"s disease) cause progressive or chronic symptoms which persist until death and these symptoms include loss of; memory and insight, the ability to make judgements, the ability to communicate and the ability to carry out complex tasks. Symptoms also cause changes in behaviour (ADI, 2015; WHO, 2012).

When the person who is living with dementia does not have decisional capacity another person, the proxy decision maker, will need to make the decision. …

Developing Teacher Competencies For Problem-Based Learning Pedagogy And For Supporting Learning In Language-Minority Students, Peter Rillero, Mari Koerner, Margarita Jimenez-Silva, Joi Merritt, Wendy J. Farr Jun 2017

Developing Teacher Competencies For Problem-Based Learning Pedagogy And For Supporting Learning In Language-Minority Students, Peter Rillero, Mari Koerner, Margarita Jimenez-Silva, Joi Merritt, Wendy J. Farr

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Teachers need to be able to design and implement problem-based learning (PBL) experiences to help students master the content and the processes in new mathematics and science education standards. Due to the changed population of learners within schools, it is also critically important that teachers in the elementary grades have the abilities to work effectively with English language learners (ELL). This article discusses the implementation of a major initiative by our teachers college to achieve both of these goals through Problem-Based Enhanced Language Learning (PBELL), which combines PBL, enhanced opportunities for language, and ELL methods. The implementation began with a …

Restoration Raillery: The Use Of Witty Repartee To Gain Power Within Gendered Spaces Of Restoration London, Bonnie Soper

Madison Historical Review

“Restoration Raillery: The Use of Witty Repartee to Gain Power within Gendered Spaces in Restoration London,” examines the creation of gendered spaces to gain political and social power through the use of satire and wit in poetry, theater, and the court of Charles II in Restoration London. During the Restoration period, mentions of wit and incivility in print and theatre increased over previous eras due to the heightened importance placed on wit as a tool to gain popularity within the court of Charles II. At the same time, witty repartee and well-executed satire provided political power to men within Parliament, …

African American Teacher Recruitment: A Case Study In Oregon, Deborah Miller Allen Jun 2017

African American Teacher Recruitment: A Case Study In Oregon, Deborah Miller Allen

Dissertations and Theses

The public school teacher population of the United States is predominantly White, while the demographics of P-12 student population continue to grow increasingly diverse. Across the nation, there has been a call for the recruitment and retention of culturally and linguistically diverse teachers. The state of Oregon passed the Oregon Educator Equity Act, originally called the Oregon Minority Teacher Act, in 1991, and with recent renewed attention, the preparation of more culturally and linguistically diverse teachers in the state has gained prominence. Refocused consideration to the lack of diversity in the teaching workforce is overdue, as evidenced by the low …

Middle School Teacher Beliefs About Classroom Diversity And Their Influence On Differentiated Instructional Practices, Marcus Fredrick-Lynn Wenzel Jun 2017

Middle School Teacher Beliefs About Classroom Diversity And Their Influence On Differentiated Instructional Practices, Marcus Fredrick-Lynn Wenzel

Dissertations and Theses

Diversity across U.S. classrooms is on the rise which is leading to renewed calls for teachers to meet individual learning needs. Studies indicate the failure to address individual learning needs can lead to higher rates of student disengagement, off-task behaviors, and diminished learning outcomes. Differentiated instruction is an approach to teaching that meets the growing diversity of individual learning needs by considering students' readiness, interest, and learning styles. Differentiated instructional approaches help teachers meet individual learning needs by allowing them to modify instruction as needed. However, despite the apparent benefits of differentiated instruction, teachers are hesitant to abandon other educational …

A Comparative Study Of Tourism And Hospitality Education In The United Kingdom And France, C Mansfield, H Seraphin

Plymouth Business School

Sufficient historical detail is provided on the development of tourism in France and the United Kingdom to provide a context for the discussion of how comparative education practices can inform and improve the provision of university education in Europe. Findings from a recent empirical comparative study of university provision for tourism and hospitality studies are presented and analysed to progress the work in this field of research. Finally, very recent moves, especially in industry-specific education in France, are combined with the teaching initiative called CLIL (Content & Language Integrated Learning) to offer a way forward for educators in tourism and …
