The Voices Of Special Educators: How Do Special Educators Teach English Language Learners Who Are Receiving Special Education Services?, Elizabeth Ann Dubois Jun 2017

The Voices Of Special Educators: How Do Special Educators Teach English Language Learners Who Are Receiving Special Education Services?, Elizabeth Ann Dubois

Dissertations and Theses

Disproportionality in special education has been examined from various perspectives over a 50-year period. English Language Learner (ELL) students have been included in the discussion among researchers in the past two decades as a disproportionate number of ELL students are referred to special education. Though the problem of disproportionality has been acknowledged, documented and discussed over a period of decades, there is a lack of research from the voices of special educators. The purpose of this study was to describe special education teachers' experiences teaching students currently or previously enrolled in an English language learner program who are receiving special …

Back To The Future: Logic And Machine Learning, Simon Dobnik, John D. Kelleher Jun 2017

Back To The Future: Logic And Machine Learning, Simon Dobnik, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

In this paper we argue that since the beginning of the natural language processing or computational linguistics there has been a strong connection between logic and machine learning. First of all, there is something logical about language or linguistic about logic. Secondly, we argue that rather than distinguishing between logic and machine learning, a more useful distinction is between top-down approaches and data-driven approaches. Examining some recent approaches in deep learning we argue that they incorporate both properties and this is the reason for their very successful adoption to solve several problems within language technology.

A Comparative Analysis Of Student Participation In The Advancement Via Individual Determination(Avid) Program And Performance On The Grade 11 Michigan Merit Exam (Mme), Alesia L. Flye

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) curriculum emphasizes writing, collaboration, organization, and reading to strengthen academic skills. High school students enrolled in AVID elective classes receive daily academic support, while enrolled in challenging classes such as Advanced Placement (AP). The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Academic High School students’ participation in the AVID college readiness system and students’ academic achievement using multiple measures, including the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) state assessment, the American College Test (ACT) college readiness assessment, the Advanced Placement (AP) program, and grade point average (GPA). Vroom’s (1964) expectancy theory comprised the …

Resiliency, Generalized Self-Efficacy And Mindfulness As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Stress And Both Life Satisfaction And Depression Among College Students: An Investigation Of The Resilience Process, Ben N. Smith Iv Jun 2017

Resiliency, Generalized Self-Efficacy And Mindfulness As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Stress And Both Life Satisfaction And Depression Among College Students: An Investigation Of The Resilience Process, Ben N. Smith Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation attempted to add to the resilience literature by answering two research questions. The first was:"does resiliency serve as a unique protective factor compared to generalized self-efficacy (GSE) and mindfulness?" It was hypothesized that (1a) GSE, mindfulness and resiliency at time 1 would all uniquely predict lower depression and higher life-satisfaction at time 2; (1b) resiliency would be a stronger predictor of these outcomes than mindfulness and GSE; and (2) resiliency would uniquely buffer the relationship between stress and both time 2 depression and life satisfaction. The second question was: "Is resiliency predicted by GSE and mindfulness, or, alternatively, …

Developing A Collaborative Qualitative Research Project Across Borders: Issues And Dilemmas, Peter Sayer, Troy Crawford Jun 2017

Developing A Collaborative Qualitative Research Project Across Borders: Issues And Dilemmas, Peter Sayer, Troy Crawford

The Qualitative Report

International collaborative research often refers to collaboration among the researchers and the participants. Few studies investigate the collaborative process among the researchers themselves. Assumptions about the qualitative research process, institutional requirements, and even epistemological orientations, are pervasive. Our experience conducting an empirical research study as a collaborative effort amongst a research team in Mexico and the United States challenged and transformed our assumptions about collaborative qualitative research in terms of organizational compatibility: (a) understanding research perspective and themes, (b) interpreting rules and regulations (c) physical travel between countries, and (d) how research products are counted. We address each assumption through …

Predictors Of Behavior Problems In The Context Of Peer Play Interactions: A Sample Of Low-Income Latino Preschoolers, Olivia Hernandez Gonzalez Jun 2017

Predictors Of Behavior Problems In The Context Of Peer Play Interactions: A Sample Of Low-Income Latino Preschoolers, Olivia Hernandez Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Latinos are the fastest-growing minority group in the United States and have higher dropout rates compared to other groups. Moreover, problem behaviors are common in preschool classrooms, and the incidence of these problems is higher for children from low-income families. The purpose of this study was to understand Latino children's problem behaviors in the context of peer play interactions and identify those variables that influence such behavior. 265 five and six-year-old Spanish-speaking children (53.6% female) attending Head Start or kindergarten participated in the study. Additionally, 198 mothers and 78 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten lead teachers participated in the study. Child level …

“They Ate Macaroni-And-Cheese Or Tv Dinners; My Mother Made Curry Instead ”: A Narrative Inquiry Of South Asian American Writers’ Identity Negotiation, Su Yin Khor Jun 2017

“They Ate Macaroni-And-Cheese Or Tv Dinners; My Mother Made Curry Instead ”: A Narrative Inquiry Of South Asian American Writers’ Identity Negotiation, Su Yin Khor

Theses and Dissertations

As the demographic and linguistic landscape in the United States is shifting—the Asian population has increased significantly in the last decade, particularly the South Asian population—these changes are reflected in the classrooms all over the country. As such, it becomes imperative to investigate who these multilinguals are, and as several scholars have pointed out, the Asian population has not been studied to the same extent as other minorities. In addition, the notion of a homogenous Asian identity persists and hides the internal differences that exist within the Asian population.

Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to challenge the notion …

Mediators’ Self-Perception Of Their Work And Practice: Content And Lexical Analysis, Anne Pignault, Raymond Meyers, Claude Houssemand

The Qualitative Report

Mediation is increasingly used in various areas of society. Yet few studies have shed light on the unique work of mediators and their perception of the “mediator effect” on the process. The purpose of this qualitative study is to gather and compare mediators’ views about their work through feedback on their practices and to understand what they perceive as the bases for reaching a favorable outcome. This article presents the results of a content analysis of interviews with 13 mediators from different countries and cultures. The analysis grouped professional discourses into four areas: the process of the mediation meeting, mediation …

“Less Of The Heroine Than The Woman”: Parsing Gender In The British Novel, Susan Carlile Jun 2017

“Less Of The Heroine Than The Woman”: Parsing Gender In The British Novel, Susan Carlile

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay offers two methods that will help students resist the temptation to judge eighteenth-century novels by twenty-first-century standards. These methods prompt students to parse the question of whether female protagonists in novels—in this case, Daniel Defoe’s Roxana (1724), Samuel Johnson’s Rasselas (1759), and Charlotte Lennox’s Sophia (1762)—are portrayed as perfect models or as complex humans. The first method asks them to engage with definitions of the term “heroine,” and the second method uses word clouds to extend their thinking about the complexity of embodying a mid-eighteenth-century female identity.

Conversational System Responses, Aleksandar Kracun, Austin Waters

Defensive Publications Series

The disclosed system and method match verbosity of a machine's responses to the verbosity or brevity of the user's query. The system includes a semantic parser connected to an audio input and output device to process and respond to queries. The method includes building a simple statistical model of mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) for the lengths of the audio of the user’s query utterances and the multiple variants of the generated text-to-speech (TTS) output for each query type or action or intent. The system may extract fluff or slot filling words from verbose queries to use in formulating …

Improving The Quality Of Homework Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students Through Translation For Parents, Robin Thorne Jun 2017

Improving The Quality Of Homework Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students Through Translation For Parents, Robin Thorne

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students were provided with Spanish versions of homework for their parents to assist them, their homework performance would improve. Research has shown that in order to remove biases in education, the academic program and the characteristics of the student must be compatible. The sample consisted of 6 CLD students in the same Social Studies class. Student grades on homework were used to determine if student homework averages increased when homework assignments were translated into the parent's native language.

The results of the study does give some …

Misconceptions Of "Stupendous Antiquities" : Native American Mounds, Euro-Americans, And Racial Ideas, Lily Isabelle Hart Jun 2017

Misconceptions Of "Stupendous Antiquities" : Native American Mounds, Euro-Americans, And Racial Ideas, Lily Isabelle Hart

University Honors Theses

Across North America, remnants exist of the ancient works of Indigenous peoples. Prime examples are the long-abandoned city of Cahokia near present-day St. Louis, Illinois, which was once a bustling city larger than London in 1200 AD. In Cahokia, there are mounds that are as high as one hundred feet and a "Woodhenge" that functions as a calendar. Despite these impressive displays of engineering, urban planning, and understanding of astronomy, Cahokia was not protected as a National Historic Landmark until 1964--this late protection was the case for many of the mounds across America. Many mounds were plowed over and pueblos …

The Effects Of Morpheme And Prosody Instruction On Middle School Spelling, Margaret Anne Dornay Jun 2017

The Effects Of Morpheme And Prosody Instruction On Middle School Spelling, Margaret Anne Dornay

Education Dissertations

A single case design was used to investigate the impact of two types of instruction on middle school students’ spelling. Phase 1 emphasized morphology awareness instruction (MAI) and phase 2 employed the addition of prosody awareness instruction (PAI). In order to compare the effects of MAI and PAI, spelling scores were gathered from eight students over a 12-week period. The children attended two 30-minute sessions each week. Two of the participants were high performing students, three were typical learners, and three students were experiencing pronounced difficulties in all areas of literacy. The scores of seven out of eight participants indicated …

Special Issue Editor's Introduction: 50 Years Of Model Minority Stereotype Research, Nicholas Daniel Hartlep Jun 2017

Special Issue Editor's Introduction: 50 Years Of Model Minority Stereotype Research, Nicholas Daniel Hartlep

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This special issue, intentionally focused on Southeast Asian Americans and the model minority myth, is important because Southeast Asian Americans have been “politically invisible” and because a disproportionate number have found it difficult to succeed academically. Asian Americans are not passive people. The model minority stereotype didn’t develop only because journalists made them out to be models or exemplars. This special issue shares 4 articles.

Academic Needs And Family Factors In The Education Of Southeast Asian American Students: Dismantling The Model Minority Myth, David M. Lee, Luke Duesbery, Peggy P. Han, Thupten Tashi, Chia S. Her, Valerie Ooka Pang Jun 2017

Academic Needs And Family Factors In The Education Of Southeast Asian American Students: Dismantling The Model Minority Myth, David M. Lee, Luke Duesbery, Peggy P. Han, Thupten Tashi, Chia S. Her, Valerie Ooka Pang

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

The model minority myth is a powerful force in schools. Many teachers believe that Asian American students do not need academic interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine the student achievement of almost a million seventh-grade students from California. The research compared the performance of Southeast Asian Americans, Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese students, on reading and math on the CAT/6 standardized assessment with African American and White American students. Cambodian American and Laotian American students performed significantly lower than their White American peers and compared similarly to their African American peers. Vietnamese American students also scored lower than …

The Model Minority Maze: Hmong Americans Working Within And Around Racial Discourses, Stacey Lee, Choua Xiong, Linda Marie Pheng, Mai Neng Vang

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Whether framed as model minorities or used as evidence that the model minority is a myth, Hmong Americans and other Southeast Asians are constrained by the model minority stereotype. As a disciplinary tool, the model minority stereotype controls Asian American experiences and identities. This paper explores the complex and diverse ways that Hmong Americans in a community in Wisconsin are making sense of and responding to the model minority stereotype and the racial positioning of the Hmong American community. Our paper will illustrate the persistent power of the model minority stereotype to frame Asian American experiences, identities and actions.

Accentuate The Positive; Eliminate The Negative: Hegemonic Interest Convergence, Racialization Of Latino Poverty, And The 1968 Bilingual Education Act, Kenzo K. Sung Jun 2017

Accentuate The Positive; Eliminate The Negative: Hegemonic Interest Convergence, Racialization Of Latino Poverty, And The 1968 Bilingual Education Act, Kenzo K. Sung

College of Education Departmental Research

Derrick Bell's interest convergence thesis is a seminal framework to analyze social change within critical race theory. While interest convergence's influence has grown, two foundational questions have been raised: do interest groups act rationally; does interest convergence also offer a change prescription or only an explanation of prior events. By revisiting Bell's early influences, via the concept of hegemony, the article intervenes in these two formative debates by offering a reimagined analytic framing that I term “hegemonic interest convergence.” The article then applies this concept to analyze how broader political economic shifts shaped the struggles within which the 1968 Bilingual …

“The Soccer Field, It Has Dirt”: A Critical Analysis Of Teacher Learners In Contact With Emergent Multilingual Students, Theresa Catalano, Jenelle Reeves, Stephanie Wessels Jun 2017

“The Soccer Field, It Has Dirt”: A Critical Analysis Of Teacher Learners In Contact With Emergent Multilingual Students, Theresa Catalano, Jenelle Reeves, Stephanie Wessels

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In today’s globalized world, superdiversity and global migration have led to an increased focus on emergent multilingual students and how schools can best serve them. The authors explore how teacher learners in an undergraduate course on emergent multilinguals in a mid-sized university in the Midwest critically reflect on their learning in a practicum experience. Utilizing tools and perspectives from critical discourse studies (CDS), the researchers/teacher educators examine ideologies that surface in teacher learner reflections on their practicum experiences to find out how they renegotiate (or withhold) their beliefs while connecting to critical readings, coursework, and their experiences working with emergent …

"New Elemental Force": The Necessity Of An Engaged Poetry, Mary Ann Davis Jun 2017

"New Elemental Force": The Necessity Of An Engaged Poetry, Mary Ann Davis

Denison Journal of Religion

This essay explores the undeniable influence Zen Buddhism has had on American poets and poetry of recent years. The poets who are often recognized for the influence of Buddhism in their work are, however, frequently only white men. Despite this, a new emphasis on social issues and human rights is coming to the forefront in Buddhism. This influence is becoming so strong in some circles that many are claiming it is a new form of Buddhism, socially engaged Buddhism. Will this incarnation of Buddhism begin to influence American poetry to create an engaged poetry that is inherently about social change? …

Thinking In Uno And Reading En Otro: Codeswitching In American Novels, Mary Elizabeth Munoz Jun 2017

Thinking In Uno And Reading En Otro: Codeswitching In American Novels, Mary Elizabeth Munoz

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout history, languages that have come into contact with each other often fought for supremacy, but ultimately, they ended up coexisting in peace for the most part. The United States is a prime example of multiple languages mixing together, and after generations of doing so, some have blended almost entirely; this is not necessarily a bad thing. The U.S. has a history of being a nation that harbors multiple cultures along with those many languages, and even after wars, expansion, and segregation, those cultures and languages that remain cannot be suppressed. The United States houses multiple cultures, and there are …

Six Short Stories From Juan Maya Avila's La Venganza De Los Aztecas (Mitos Y Profecias) In English Translation With Translator's Commentary, Yvonne Lybiet Herrera

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis encompasses an English translation of six short stories from the collection titled La venganza de los aztecas (mitos y profecias) [The Vengeance of the Aztecas (Myths and Prophecies)] by Juan Maya Avila. Each of the stories can be read to entertain the reader but also to gain insight into many interesting aspects of Mexican history as historical events and people have been fictionalized. The thesis, however, does not provide a literary analysis of the stories, but rather a translation analysis of the challenges faced by the translator during the translation of the six stories. In addition to the …

An Erp Examination Of Figurative Language Processing In Spanish-English Bilinguals, Betsy Janet Abastta Jun 2017

An Erp Examination Of Figurative Language Processing In Spanish-English Bilinguals, Betsy Janet Abastta

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the differences in Event-Related Potential (ERPs) amplitudes and reaction times (RTs) with English-Spanish bilingual readers when processing English idiomatic phrases. Twenty-eight English-Spanish bilinguals from Texas A&M International University participated in the study (13 males, 15 females). Participants were administered a meaningfulness judgment task. In this task, participants were asked to determine if a visually presented target, was related to the preceding context, kick the bucket-DIE. The measures recorded were the reaction time (RT), accuracy of the response, and N400 and P600 wavelengths signifying the activation of literal and figurative meanings. It was hypothesized that idiomatic expressions that …
