A Pattern Approach To Examine The Design Space Of Spatiotemporal Visualization, Chen Guo
A Pattern Approach To Examine The Design Space Of Spatiotemporal Visualization, Chen Guo
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
Pattern language has been widely used in the development of visualization systems. This dissertation applies a pattern language approach to explore the design space of spatiotemporal visualization. The study provides a framework for both designers and novices to communicate, develop, evaluate, and share spatiotemporal visualization design on an abstract level. The touchstone of the work is a pattern language consisting of fifteen design patterns and four categories. In order to validate the design patterns, the researcher created two visualization systems with this framework in mind. The first system displayed the daily routine of human beings via a polygon-based visualization. The …

The Use Of Social Learning Theory And Communities Of Practice In The Exploration Of Social Interaction Between Hearing And Deaf Employees In The Workplace, Keisha N. Burnett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although the Americans with Disabilities Act has brought attention on disparities that focus on physical aspects of discrimination, there is a scarcity of research on the deaf employee's day to day experiences in a hearing work environment. Due to the differences in communication styles between deaf and hearing individuals, deaf employees face obstacles in social interaction and participation in the workplace. The purpose of this study was to explore how the deaf employee's social interaction and participation is impacted by their experiences with hearing and deaf employees in the workplace. A narrative inquiry qualitative design was used to gain understanding …
Buried History: Reclaiming Native Diplomats In Congressional Cemetery, Rachael Cassidy
Buried History: Reclaiming Native Diplomats In Congressional Cemetery, Rachael Cassidy
History ETDs
ABSTRACT: The Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C., the first national cemetery in United States, holds the remains of thirty six Native Diplomats who died in capital city while negotiating treaties for their nations. The diplomats faced discrimination in Washington D.C. because they were perceived as racially inferior. Myths, such as Manifest Destiny and the vanishing Indian, justified the displacement of Indigenous people from their homelands and attempted to erase them as America’s first people. Although Native diplomats faced intense racial stereotypes and intentional deception during treaty negotiations, they skillfully negotiated to protect their nations and their sovereignty. The stories of …

Using The Task Analysis Process With Teachers To Uncover Language Demands Within An Eight-Week Ngss Summer Course, Leah Plack
Dissertations and Theses
The state of Oregon has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards as well as the English Language Proficiency standards, both of which affect elementary school teachers. These standards adoptions challenge teachers and professional developers to rethink how they approach science conceptual understanding and language acquisition. The Math Science Partnership K-6 Instructional Specialist Grant made the decision to incorporate a Task Analysis process, which asks the participant to analyze the demands of a content-based task in the domains of content knowledge, analytical skills and language, into six eight-week summer courses focused on the Next Generation Science Standards. Impact Of Health Literacy On Clinical Trial Enrollment For Breast Cancer Patients, Jessica Keim-Malpass, Christine Kennedy, Shayna Showalter, Aubrey Doede
Impact Of Health Literacy On Clinical Trial Enrollment For Breast Cancer Patients, Jessica Keim-Malpass, Christine Kennedy, Shayna Showalter, Aubrey Doede
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Health literacy, or the ability to obtain, appraise and integrate health-related knowledge, is recognized by the Institute of Medicine as an integral component of high-quality health care. In adults, limited health literacy can be a critical indicator of adverse health outcomes such as: diminished health-related knowledge, increased measures of morbidity, poor adherence to medication regimens, and high utilization of health care resources. It is estimated that 20 - 36% of all adults in the United States have limited health literacy, and that the prevalence rises to closer to 50% among those who are also from a low income background. …
What Should The U.S. Army Learn From History? Recovery From A Strategy Deficit, Colin S. Gray Dr.
What Should The U.S. Army Learn From History? Recovery From A Strategy Deficit, Colin S. Gray Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Does history repeat itself? This monograph clearly answers “no,” firmly. However, it does not argue that an absence of repetition in the sense of analogy means that history can have no utility for the soldier today. This monograph argues for a “historical parallelism,” in place of shaky or false analogy. The past, even the distant and ancient past, provides evidence of the potency of lasting virtues of good conduct. This monograph concludes by offering four recommendations: 1) Behave prudently. 2) Remember the concept of the great stream of time. 3) Do not forget that war nearly always is a gamble. …
Conducting A Communal Questionnaire In Community-Oriented Cultures, Forrest Watson
Conducting A Communal Questionnaire In Community-Oriented Cultures, Forrest Watson
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
In order to enrich our scholarly knowledge we need to consider how our methodologies fit the particularities of every social context. A recent experience conducting a questionnaire in rural Turkey revealed a “community orientation” (Turan 1975) among respondents that caused me to question the individual as the center of analytic attention. Based on my findings, I propose the communal questionnaire, an innovative hybrid of the structured survey, qualitative interview, and focus group, which accounts for the non-standard nature of respondents’ social situations. I conclude with methodological suggestions for conducting research in community-oriented cultures.

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Globally, depression is among the most significant contributors to burden of disease (Whiteford et al., 2013). The rapid increase of mobile phone use in low-and-middle income countries provides an opportunity to leverage technology-based interventions to improve global health (mHealth) (World Health Organization (WHO), 2011). This study builds on previous research and ongoing collaboration with the Dominican Ministry of Public Health on mental health stigma and mental health service needs in the Dominican Republic (DR), which found unmet mental health care service needs, particularly in terms of access to care, affordability of treatment, and stigma (Caplan, Little, Reyna, Sosa Lovera, …

Football And Colonialism : Body And Popular Culture In Urban Mozambique, Nuno Domingos
Football And Colonialism : Body And Popular Culture In Urban Mozambique, Nuno Domingos
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
In articles for the newspaper O Brado Africano in the mid-1950s, poet and journalist José Craveirinha described the ways in which the Mozambican football players in the suburbs of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) adapted the European sport to their own expressive ends. Through gesture, footwork, and patois, they used what Craveirinha termed “malice”—or cunning—to negotiate their places in the colonial state. “These manifestations demand a vast study,” Craveirinha wrote, “which would lead to a greater knowledge of the black man, of his problems, of his clashes with European civilization, in short, to a thorough treatise of useful and instructive ethnography.” …

Generation Of Speech Training Data For Special Speech Recognition Tasks, Dimitri Kanevsky, Andrew Senior, Sara Basson
Generation Of Speech Training Data For Special Speech Recognition Tasks, Dimitri Kanevsky, Andrew Senior, Sara Basson
Defensive Publications Series
Speech recognition is widely used as a voice-user interface in several settings, e.g., interactive voice response, virtual personal assistants, transcription, translation applications, etc. Although speech recognition technology has advanced far enough to be useful to a sizeable number of human speakers, there are still populations that cannot take full advantage of speech recognition. For example, people with impaired speech, speakers of rare languages or dialects, with strong accents, etc. have difficulty using an application that uses speech recognition. The reason for such user difficulty is that there is insufficient data to train an automatic speech recognizer to recognize such relatively …
Right Time In Medication Administration: A Multifaceted Concept, Juliana J. Brixey, William Scott Erdley
Right Time In Medication Administration: A Multifaceted Concept, Juliana J. Brixey, William Scott Erdley
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The medication administration process is a five-step procedure entailing prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring. Medication administration involves giving a pharmacological agent, such as a drug, to a patient or client. Within medication administration the patient expects the right medication, in the right dose, to be at the right time, and by the right route. ‘Right time", which is clearly identified as an important component of the medication administration process, should therefore be clearly defined as well achievable. ‘Right time" also implies a measurable period of time. The literature does not clearly define ‘right time" instead defining through linking …
Language And Literacy Relationships In Spanish-Speaking English-Language Learners From Kindergarten To 2nd Grade, Kathleen Marie Durant
Language And Literacy Relationships In Spanish-Speaking English-Language Learners From Kindergarten To 2nd Grade, Kathleen Marie Durant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation investigated the cross-linguistic development of metalinguistic and literacy skills in the period between kindergarten and 2nd grade in 71 Spanish-speaking English-language learners in two studies. The studies’ goals were to 1) describe the cross-linguistic relationships between kindergarten Spanish and English phonological awareness (PA) and letter identification and later 2nd grade morphological awareness (MA) skills and literacy outcomes as well as 2) explore a developmental, cross-linguistic model of metalinguistic and literacy development in Spanish-speaking ELLs in early elementary school. In the first study, Spanish PA performance in kindergarten accounted for the majority of variance in performance on four MA …
The Extended Room Or What Otto Didn't Know, Ryan Victor
The Extended Room Or What Otto Didn't Know, Ryan Victor
Episteme
The author provides succinct explications of the relevant literature pertaining to the debate resulting from Turing’s thesis on artificial intelligence. It is argued that Searle’s Chinese room example is refuted by neither the so-called systems reply nor the Extended Mind thesis. Such attempts to defend strong AI err because they rely on altered definitions of concepts that we should not accept. The author, in addition to pointing out the importance of factoring in consciousness, provides several illustrative examples, parallels, and original arguments (including a modified concept of “strong coupling”) in his defense of Searle’s position. The paper concludes with a …
Hilary Putnam's Semantic Scientism: A Critique, Gregory R. Warner
Hilary Putnam's Semantic Scientism: A Critique, Gregory R. Warner
Episteme
This author is puzzled by and disagrees with Putnam’s theory of meaning. In particular, the author argues that there can be a gap between scientific meaning and acceptable normal use, thereby showing the tension between Putnam’s scientism and his attention to linguistic communities. Part of the problem is Putnam’s imprecision, given that he neither argues for why we should privilege scientific classification, nor helps us draw the boundary surrounding our linguistic community. The author cites commentator Gregory McCulloch a great deal to help summarize and grasp Putnam’s project, thereby necessitating a discussion of McCulloch’s own “the understanding tracks real essence” …
Acquitting Nietzsche: An Alternative View Of His Infamous Misogyny, Susan Parillo
Acquitting Nietzsche: An Alternative View Of His Infamous Misogyny, Susan Parillo
Episteme
Nietzsche has an appreciation for women’s naturalness and instinctual femininity; he desires to help emancipate them. A closer look at Beyond Good and Evil exonerates Nietzsche of the charge that finds him to be a supreme misogynist. The author begins her paper by rectifying the misunderstandings concerning his style, which makes wide use of confusion-causing linguistic tools. She then supports Maudemarie Clark’s attention to the distinction between “women as such” and “women.” The author argues that Nietzsche attacks the socio-psychological construction of womanness and the typically unhelpful role women play in perpetuating it. In the late 19th century, the women’s …
