Cultural Aspects Of Arabicisation: Past And Present, Musallam Al-Ma’Ani
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
The aim of this article is to examine the cultural dimensions of arabicisation, past and present. The article traces the rise and fall of arabicisation and its ramifications for science, knowledge, research and education in and through Arabic. Arabicisation has been at the heart of linguistic and cultural debate since the dawn of Islam, a debate intensified when the Arabs and their new religion came into contact with different civilizations and cultures. The rise of the Islamic empire in mediaeval times consolidated Arabic and Arab culture, attracting scholars from around the world to research different areas of science and knowledge …

Omani Classical Poetry And Discourse Deviation, Hilal Al Hajri, Khalid Al Balushi
Omani Classical Poetry And Discourse Deviation, Hilal Al Hajri, Khalid Al Balushi
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
We argue in this paper that there are voices in Omani classical poetry that challenged the dominant cultural discourse and deviated from it. The paper is divided into two parts. Part one is mainly theoretical. We start by introducing Omani poetic discourse as one in which different voices compete. We then refer to literary theory to establish that poetry by definition challenges public discourse. Part two is practical. Taking what is established in Part 1 as our point of departure, we practically substantiate our claim by discussing excerpts from Omani classical poetry. We conclude by putting forward suggestions for further …
The Social Aspects Of The Language Varieties In The Contemporary Omani Society: A Sociolinguistic Study, Mohammed Bin Salem Mashani
The Social Aspects Of The Language Varieties In The Contemporary Omani Society: A Sociolinguistic Study, Mohammed Bin Salem Mashani
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
TThis paper discusses the social aspects of the language varieties in the contemporary Omani society as a critical dimension of this society, as a means of acquiring social behavior and as a symbol of the Omani social identity. The study underscores the importance of this diversity in contemporary society and its relationship with culture, thought and behavior. The paper gives an overview of the various aspects of this phenomenon and the interrelationship between these social aspects on the one hand and between them and the society on the other hand. The paper also discusses some common sociolinguistic terms and concepts …
An Investigation Into Assessment Preferences Of Gulf Arab Students, Mashael Al-Hamly, Christine Coombe
An Investigation Into Assessment Preferences Of Gulf Arab Students, Mashael Al-Hamly, Christine Coombe
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
The purposes of this study are to gain insight into Gulf Arab EFL students’ preferences when being assessed in their university-level English courses and to investigate if gender and degree of test anxiety have an impact on these preferences. Data were obtained from responses on an adapted form of Birenbaum’s (1994) Assessment Preferences Inventory. Results show that the students participating in this study favor assessments with multiplechoice (MCQ) questions as they are viewed as being easier to prepare for, easier to take, and thus will bring in relatively higher scores. Results also indicate that students are very much in favor …
Principles Of Arabic Noun Gender: An Overview Of Learning Difficulties, Abdulhamid Alaqtash, Amjad Talafha
Principles Of Arabic Noun Gender: An Overview Of Learning Difficulties, Abdulhamid Alaqtash, Amjad Talafha
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Arab linguists have distinguished between the animate and inanimate gender of nouns, where the former was assigned a male or female natural gender and the later a grammatical gender, and so the distinction between the real natural gender and the figurative grammatical gender has spread widely in Arabic grammar. Educational studies and linguistic research carried out by educationalists and linguists have indicated the prevalence of two difficulties in teaching and learning the issue of grammatical gender. The first is related to distinguishing between masculine and feminine within the same sex; the other is related to the multiplicities in the structural …
Prosodic Text Analysis Theory, Mohammed Gamal Sakr
Prosodic Text Analysis Theory, Mohammed Gamal Sakr
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Within the field of poetic text linguistics, the theories of both text linguistics and prosodic linguistics have failed to reveal the nature of the creation of the poetic text and the way it is received by people. This necessitates adopting a new theoretical framework that combines the two approaches by focusing on nine norms: domain rules, length and separation rules, paragraph and sentence rules, phrases and words rules, and syllable and sound rules. These rules should be used by anyone who compares between different poetic texts on the one hand, and between poetic and non-poetic texts on the other.
An Analysis Of Lexicon In Omani English Language Teaching: Challenges From Teaching And Learning Perspectives, Rahma Al-Mahrooqi, Faisal Al-Maamari, Christopher Denman
An Analysis Of Lexicon In Omani English Language Teaching: Challenges From Teaching And Learning Perspectives, Rahma Al-Mahrooqi, Faisal Al-Maamari, Christopher Denman
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Textbooks are indispensable in most formal education settings. However, many teachers believe weaknesses in textbooks can result in ineffective learning and teaching. This research uses a corpus-based approach to identify issues related to vocabulary with a particular focus on English textbooks in use in Omani schools. WordSmith Tools and RANGE concordance software are used to analyze these textbooks. Findings indicate that there are irregularities in vocabulary loading and that the types, tokens, density and consistency ratio show inconsistencies. Moreover, in terms of the coverage of GSL and AWL word lists, the textbooks fall short of the ideal range of 95% …
Modality With Past Time Reference In English-Into-Arabic Fiction Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Mashael Al-Hamly
Modality With Past Time Reference In English-Into-Arabic Fiction Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Mashael Al-Hamly
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Modality is a semantic medium that colors the way the language user views the world around him/ her in terms of certainty, necessity and obligation; hence, it places extra effort on the translator while attempting to capture modalistic shades of meaning. The task may become more challenging when the translator is dealing with a language pair where modality is grammar-oriented in one member (English, for example) and lexis-oriented in the other (Arabic, for example). The present paper aims to investigate the rendering of speaker participation in the speech event as embodied in modality when translating English fiction into Arabic. In …
Detect Rumors In Microblog Posts Using Propagation Structure Via Kernel Learning, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong
Detect Rumors In Microblog Posts Using Propagation Structure Via Kernel Learning, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
How fake news goes viral via social media? How does its propagation pattern differ from real stories? In this paper, we attempt to address the problem of identifying rumors, i.e., fake information, out of microblog posts based on their propagation structure. We firstly model microblog posts diffusion with propagation trees, which provide valuable clues on how an original message is transmitted and developed over time. We then propose a kernel-based method called Propagation Tree Kernel, which captures high-order patterns differentiating different types of rumors by evaluating the similarities between their propagation tree structures. Experimental results on two real-world datasets demonstrate …

Rhetorical Tropes And Polysemy, Saber Mahmoud Lahbacha
Rhetorical Tropes And Polysemy, Saber Mahmoud Lahbacha
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
There are many semantic ties which join polysemy with rhetorical tropes. While polysemy is a natural phenomenon in language, which does not denote any aesthetic dimension, rhetorical tropes denote clearly an aesthetic effect. Thus, there emerged many significant semantic relationships between polysemy and various rhetorical tropes as metaphor, zeugma and periphrasis. This study endeavors to focus on kinds of potential correlations and continuum between aesthetical and semantic levels, in hidden discussion between the Nazm theory and the linguistics` new methods.
Conversational Maxims Of Cooperation In Jordanian Newspapers Socio-Political Interviews, Nawaf Obiedat
Conversational Maxims Of Cooperation In Jordanian Newspapers Socio-Political Interviews, Nawaf Obiedat
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This paper investigates the status of Grice’s (1975) conversational maxims of cooperation in Jordanian socio-political newspapers interviews. It also discusses the fundamental norms and conventions that shape conduct in these kinds of interviews and recurrent practices through which journalists balance competing professional demands for both objective and an adversarial treatment of public figures in the present case two former Jordanian Prime Ministers (PMs). The paper also explores how, in the face of aggressive questioning, the PMs struggle to stay “on message”, so to speak, and pursue their own agenda. Through a pragma-linguistic analysis of these interviews, the study reveals that …
Recovery Of An Early Evidence Of Castor Plant, Ricinus Communis L. From The Central Sudan And Its Positioning Within A World-Wide Context, Anwar A-Magid
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Evidence of castor plant R. communis, L. is recovered from the Early Holocene archaeological site of Kabbashi Haitah in the Central Sudan and dated to c. 7700 - 7200 bp. This evidence represents the earliest botanical evidence recovered –so far- from the Central Sudan and elsewhere in Eastern Tropical Africa and the World. No evidence is found in the material culture remains which might indicate the likelihood of its being imported. Most of the ancient and traditional utilizations of castor plant are strikingly similar despite their being practised at different times in different and far apart regions in the World. …
Style In Literary Translation: A Practical Perspective, Ali Almanna, Mohammed Farghal
Style In Literary Translation: A Practical Perspective, Ali Almanna, Mohammed Farghal
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This paper explores a stylistic approach to translating literary texts from Arabic into English and vice versa. It is held that in order to be in a position to render literary texts effectively and accurately, one needs to: (1) analyze and describe varieties of language, (2) identify and discern all important aesthetic aspects of text in order to interpret and appreciate texts properly, (3) activate processes and experiences of reading along with one’s intuitive responses to the text, and (4) activate all aspects of knowledge stored in one’s mind on language, text-typological demands, generic conventions, sociological roles of participants in …

Text Grammar In Saad Maslouh’S Writing, Abdel Salam El-Sayed Hamed
Text Grammar In Saad Maslouh’S Writing, Abdel Salam El-Sayed Hamed
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
The early studies on text grammar appeared in the late 1980s. Maslouh was among the few founders of this field in Arabic studies. However, his contribution has not been fully acknowledged in spite of its originality, richness, and importance. The current study aims at bridging this gap by shedding lights on Maslouh’s contribution to text grammar. It will study the major aspects of his three researches on the area. The study will describe his work and compare his theoretical backgrounds to his analysis and introduce a final discussion and results. The importance of this work emerges from the integrity of …
The Children Of The Cuban Revolution In The Diaspora: From Internationalism To Transnational And Cosmopolitan Imaginaries, Marelys Valencia
The Children Of The Cuban Revolution In The Diaspora: From Internationalism To Transnational And Cosmopolitan Imaginaries, Marelys Valencia
Open Access Dissertations
My dissertation investigates the intermingling of discourses of migration and aesthetics within global market dynamics in the cultural production of late Cuban émigrés in the U.S. and Europe, to whom I refer as “the children of the revolution” —following Mette Louise Berg. I argue that this understudied migratory generation has replaced the diasporic teleology of return of the exile community with other imaginaries. As such, my dissertation sheds light not only on the varying ways of being Cuban in today’s world, but also on the different routes of the children of the revolution in the diaspora. By engaging in a …
Health Literacy Competencies For Registered Nurses: An E-Delphi Study, Coleen E. Toronto
Health Literacy Competencies For Registered Nurses: An E-Delphi Study, Coleen E. Toronto
Dissertations
In the United States, only 12% of adults possess proficient health literacy skills. Individuals with low health literacy skills experience poorer health outcomes. Failure of registered nurses to consider health literacy in communication with patients can significantly affect an individual's ability to understand and therefore, follow health advice. The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion (2004) landmark report recommends that health professionals be trained to effectively communicate with patients with limited health literacy. There is an absence of nurse competencies that explicitly address the needs of patients with low health literacy. Therefore the purpose of …
Materialist And Causal Bridges Over The Explanatory Gap, Celine Geday
Materialist And Causal Bridges Over The Explanatory Gap, Celine Geday
Anthós
The explanatory gap about the subjective nature of conscious experience is the gap in explanation between conscious experience, and available scientific explanations of conscious experience. The explanatory gap is, as Joseph Levine states, the problem that physicalism (or the physical sciences) has in describing mental terms and experiences.7 Thomas Nagel also describes the explanatory gap problem as the problem of explaining the subjective in objective terms. He states that the subjective viewpoint of the individual is inherently at odds with an objective, or physical explanation.8 Describing someone’s experience of the redness of red, for example, by describing the neural mechanisms …
Social Constructions Of Childhood: From Not-Yet-Adults To People In Their Own Right, Sophia K. Biddle
Social Constructions Of Childhood: From Not-Yet-Adults To People In Their Own Right, Sophia K. Biddle
Anthós
Across the globe it is clear that children are a marginalized group. Children are not allowed to vote or be taken seriously in political circles (Sharpe, 2015), are kept away from public spaces (Valentine 2004), navigate inhospitable working conditions (Gamlin et. al., 2015), and are rapidly losing the time and space to foster their own child culture (Woolley and Griffin, 2014). Adults continue to institutionalize children’s play and restrict children’s access to public space. This serves to reinforce children’s position as second-class citizens. A mounting body of work shows that children are suffering in their physical and social development due …

Cross-Cultural Peer-Mentoring: Mentor Outcomes And Perspectives, Monica L. Bellon-Harn, Rebecca K. Weinbaum
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Limited relationships with peers and faculty create barriers for retaining racial or ethnic minority students through the academic path to SPHS professions. As such, university programs must pay particular attention to formalized avenues of social support to decrease attrition and increase retention (Cokley, 2000). Mentoring is one such avenue (Wright-Harp & Cole, 2008). The purpose of this paper is to describe mentor outcomes and perspectives of a cross-cultural peer-mentoring program entitled LEAD: Leadership, Education, Advocacy, and Diversity. Graduate students from SLP and AUD graduate programs were recruited to serve as peer mentors to potential undergraduate candidates representing diverse ethnicities who …
