Latino And Non-Latino White Parents’ Experiences Raising Their Child With Asd: An Exploratory Study, Nicole Casillas, Debra Vigil, Hui-Ting Wang
Latino And Non-Latino White Parents’ Experiences Raising Their Child With Asd: An Exploratory Study, Nicole Casillas, Debra Vigil, Hui-Ting Wang
The Qualitative Report
There is a dearth of research about the experiences of the Latino population in raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This includes a lack of cross-cultural perspectives and perspectives from fathers. Although there are similar experiences in raising a child with ASD among parents, we hypothesize that there will be different experiences due to culture. The current study is an exploratory qualitative research design, where we sought to understand the experiences of Latino and non-Latino White parents who are raising a child with ASD. Results indicated similarities across all families that include: self-efficacy beliefs, challenges, stress and coping, …
Local Perspectives Of Sustainable Development, Ryan J. Stefani
Local Perspectives Of Sustainable Development, Ryan J. Stefani
Capstone Collection
Abstract
The mainstream school of thought and literature surrounding sustainable development contains numerous terms, assumptions, and perspectives which creates a myriad of meanings. As the academic literature attempts to understand this wide field of study, the perspectives have only grown instead of solidifying into a consensus. This paper first presents a literature review which explores current views and perspectives of how the terms ‘sustainable’ and ‘development’ independent of each other are used and how, by combining these terms, create even more perspectives and concepts with sometimes conflicting meanings. This paper then discusses the difficulties of using the term sustainable development …

Emerging Issues: New Uses, Whether Threat Or Chance, What Is The Current And Appropriate Legal Treatment?, Qadir Qeidary
Oklahoma Journal of Law and Technology
Legal status of the new detected uses for old patents as an independent invention is a problematic issue that gives rise to basic legal challenges regarding patent's promotion standards of protection, in particular the prolongation of the patent monopoly's term. International instruments, uncertainties, and a variety of treatments within different national and regional jurisdictions have increased the complexities of patentability of new uses. These uncertainties, especially in Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), the most important covenant on commercial aspects of intellectual properties toward new uses, have resulted in dividing various jurisdictions into contradictory of both …

Methodology: This nonexperimental correlational study included a standard regression model to determine correlations between ODA scores and DLPT5 …
Harriet Jacobs And Toni Morrison: A Tradition Of Narrative Resistance, Allyson L. Molloy
Harriet Jacobs And Toni Morrison: A Tradition Of Narrative Resistance, Allyson L. Molloy
Theses and Dissertations
This article considers historical constructions of power and the narrative as a mode of resistance. Working in different centuries, under extremely disparate circumstances, Harriet Jacobs in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Toni Morrison in her novel The Bluest Eye, utilize specific narrative strategies to challenge and question institutionalized power which is evidenced through their deliberate employment of narrative strategies not only to challenge the institution of slavery or the hegemonic ideal, but also to question the racial and gender oppression systemic to those institutions of power.

Arriving And Departing, But Never Quite Leaving: Kimberley Research Narratives Over Times, Persons And Places, Sandy Toussaint
Arriving And Departing, But Never Quite Leaving: Kimberley Research Narratives Over Times, Persons And Places, Sandy Toussaint
Talking Heads Seminar Series
The vast Kimberley has been the focus of extensive multi-disciplinary, multi-sited research projects, such as those inspired through ecological, arts, linguistic, heritage, health, historical, and native title inquiry. Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons who live in the Kimberley, visit from time to time, or undertake the research never to return, have done a great deal of this work. Via reflexive attention to arriving, departing but never quite leaving the Kimberley, and in-depth consideration of the cultural, ethical, theoretical and practical need for place-based, human-inspired interactions over time and space, this paper explores what it means to be both ‘in’ and ‘out’ …
Future-Proofing The Past?: Digital History And Preservation In New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina, Travis Waguespack
Future-Proofing The Past?: Digital History And Preservation In New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina, Travis Waguespack
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Digital history has grown into a critical aspect of history scholarship and practice. The literature surrounding digital history is colored by its discussions of the possibilities and problems of digital history, both as an archiving tool and a method of increasing interaction with public history. This literature is also defined by its lack of answers to these questions, and lack of examinations of these possibilities in cases studies. By examining how three different New Orleans historical institutions have embraced digital history for preservation and public history in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this thesis will illustrate how questions of preservation, …

Separation Of Vocal And Non-Vocal Components From Audio Clip Using Correlated Repeated Mask (Crm), Mohan Kumar Kanuri
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Extraction of singing voice from music is one of the ongoing research topics in the field of speech recognition and audio analysis. In particular, this topic finds many applications in the music field, such as in determining music structure, lyrics recognition, and singer recognition. Although many studies have been conducted for the separation of voice from the background, there has been less study on singing voice in particular.
In this study, efforts were made to design a new methodology to improve the separation of vocal and non-vocal components in audio clips using REPET [14]. In the newly designed method, we …

Using Figurative Language In American English: Challenges And Successes Of Adult English Learners, Abbey L. Ventrone
Masters Theses
English language learners (ELLs) face many challenges when learning English. One of those challenges is the figurative language that is used in every day conversations. Often the lack of understanding or misunderstanding, can result in awkward conversations for English learners. This study aimed to identify what interpretations adult English learners at the advanced level give to American English figurative language and how do those interpretations differ or correspond to native speakers’ interpretations. This case study looks specifically at five adult learners from three different countries. The learners met once a week during the summer of 2016 to listen and interpret …
Thomas Paine And The Rhetoric Of American Identity, Oma Jean Quiroz
Thomas Paine And The Rhetoric Of American Identity, Oma Jean Quiroz
Theses and Dissertations
From 1700 to 1770, the population of the English colonies in North America grew from a mere 260,000 to 2,150,000 (Breen & Hall, 2004, p. 257). New settlers came from various cultures and faiths unlike the earlier settlers. Thomas Paine united these now diverse peoples into one people creating an American culture, not from new ideas, but from a perpetuation of existing ideals in Colonial America. Paine’s language preserved and rekindled colonial ideals for a melting pot of peoples that would have quickly become a varied nation of states instead of what became a nation of “United States.” This thesis …

Expanding Learning While Away: Intercultural Communication Course, Cassandra Clements
Capstone Collection
Today’s society is becoming more interconnected and globalized, making intercultural communication competence (ICC) a necessary competence. Universities are responding to this demand through study away programs. Many students are encouraged to study away during their undergrad years. However, as Alfred and Bryarm (2002) found there is no guarantee a student will enhance their ICC through a study away experience. This capstone project outlines an ICC learning opportunity for students while on the Italy study away program, run through Lorenzo de Medici (LdM) International Institute in Florence, Italy. Lorenzo de Medici is a study abroad institute at which Keene State College …

What Is “Meta-” For? : A Peircean Critique Of The Cognitive Theory Of Metaphor, Yicun Jiang
What Is “Meta-” For? : A Peircean Critique Of The Cognitive Theory Of Metaphor, Yicun Jiang
Lingnan Theses
My thesis aims to anatomize the cognitive theory of metaphor and suggests a Peircean semiotic perspective on metaphor study. As metaphorical essentialists, Lakoff/Johnson tend to universalize a limited number of conceptual metaphors and, by doing this, they overlook the dynamic relation between metaphorical tenor and vehicle. Such notion of metaphor is not compatible with the polysemous nature of the sign. The diversity and multivalency of metaphorical vehicle, in particular, cast serious doubts on the hypothesis of “conceptual metaphors” which, being meta-metaphorical constructs, can tell us nothing but a dry and empty formula “A is B”. Consequently, Lakoff/Johnson’s notion of conceptual …

Rethinking Gender And Justice In South Asia, 1772–2013, P Anagol, Djr Grey
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Amartya Sen has compellingly argued in The Idea of Justice that far from being a value-neutral term, ‘justice’ is a relative one, with competing claims made on it by different parties in any given context. Does this mean that justice is an empty concept, bereft of any meaning or devoid of self explanatory power? This special issue seeks to find answers to this question. ‘Justice’ came to embrace myriad meanings for the British Empire. Enlightenment thinking that hinged on rationality and logic, discarding superstition and religion, provided a platform for the discussion of rights and justice for the new generations …
Fake Sports, Real Impact? Investigating Social Identity, Identity Construction, And Perceptions Of Self Using Fantasy Sports Leagues As A Platform For Communication Research, Adam James Mason
Theses and Dissertations
The present study used fantasy sports as a vehicle for investigating social identity formation and expression in online communication scenarios. Particularly of interest to the researcher were the mechanisms by which affinity for an individual’s fantasy sports league was generated, perceived public commitment to a fantasy sports identity, and the impact that commitment had on respondents’ behavior and self-concept. It was believed completing tasks associate with fantasy sports competitions and interacting socially with fellow fantasy league participants would have a direct effect on players’ level of collective self-esteem. It was also posited evaluations of collective self-esteem would then predict the …

Quantifying The Development Of Usergenerated Art During 2001-2010, Mehrdad Yazdani, Jay Chow, Lev Manovich
Publications and Research
One of the main questions in the humanities is how cultures and artistic expressions change over time. While a number of researchers have used quantitative computational methods to study historical changes in literature, music, and cinema, our paper offers the first quantitative analysis of historical changes in visual art created by users of a social online network. We propose a number of computational methods for the analysis of temporal development of art images. We then apply these methods to a sample of 270,000 artworks created between 2001 and 2010 by users of the largest social network for artÐDeviantArt (www.deviantart.com). We …

In Pursuit Of Intercultural Competency During Study Abroad, Leslie Johnson
Capstone Collection
Higher education institutions often promote their study abroad programs as a way for their students to achieve intercultural competency, which is seen as an important skill to have as the world becomes more globalized. The belief is that study abroad programs will lead to a greater chance of students gaining intercultural competency by having a large amount of in-person interactions with others from different backgrounds. Authors such as Deardorff (2008) and Benet (2009) note that if a student has a high level of intercultural competency, they not only have the desire to interact with those of other cultural backgrounds, but …

Sustaining The Human Spirit Of The High School Principal Leading For Equity, Ryan David Richardson
Sustaining The Human Spirit Of The High School Principal Leading For Equity, Ryan David Richardson
Dissertations and Theses
Shrinking budgets and swelling public accountability characterize public education in the 21st century. Pressures to increase achievement while assuring the emotional and physical safety of all students make the work of the secondary principal daunting. A leader for equity must be a symbolic, visionary, and instructional leader that creates positive change that leads to student achievement, especially for students that are traditionally underserved. The demands placed on school administrators generate leadership burnout. As we strive to meet the rigorous goals of improving academic achievement while teaching and caring for each child, we must create environments for effective administrators to thrive …

Engineering Programs And Social Sciences At Sultan Qaboos University: Presentation Of Experience And Trends, Ahmed Yousef, Haj Bordosen
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
The engineering programs at Sultan Qaboos University are designed to include a number of courses related to humanities and social sciences. This will enrich the interdisciplinarity required for engineering programs from both theoretical and practical aspects. This trend has become more significant after ABET accreditation of all College of Engineering programs in the last few years. However, like any new deployment of such interdisciplinarity, few challenges were encountered and a number of solutions successfully adopted. This fact is natural for engineering disciplines that have strong ties with rapidly evolving industrial environments. The currently growing interaction between engineering and social sciences …
The Metonymic Functions Of The Verb Fa?Ala In The Holy Qur’An, Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi
The Metonymic Functions Of The Verb Fa?Ala In The Holy Qur’An, Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This study builds on an observation that the verb fa?ala in Arabic, which means ‘do’, is essentially metonymic; it can refer to any transitive or intransitive verb in the language. This referential function is paradigmatic in nature and has been mentioned by classical Arab grammarians, hence their choice of this verb as the template or pattern on which all action verbs are formulated and modulated. The study proceeds from this basic observation to propose another type of referential function of the verb fa?ala, which is syntagmatic in nature: the cohesive function. Taking the Holy Qur’an as the corpus for this …
A Memetic Translation Assessment: The Case Of Translating Polysystem Theory Into Arabic, Hisham A. Jawad
A Memetic Translation Assessment: The Case Of Translating Polysystem Theory Into Arabic, Hisham A. Jawad
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This study examines the underlying principles that trigger decisions in translating the polysystem translation theory into contemporary Arabic. The data comprises an English summary in Munday (2001) and its Arabic version. The methodology draws on the ‘memes’ notion and its application to translation. It consists in deconstructing the polysystem theory-meme so as to see why TT has been shaped the way it is. Two translation memes inform the mutation of the theory in Arab culture, i.e. Cognition which accounts for relevant memetic knowledge and expectations of target receptors, and Target calling for the supremacy of TL/TC. It is argued that …

A Linguistic Study Of Contemporary Efforts Of Arabic Spelling (Orthography) System, Mohammed Abu Eid
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This study aims at investigating the contemporary efforts of Arabic writing system from a linguistic perspective. The study is distinguished from previous studies by treating the writing system as a linguistic one with its own linguistic features. Thus, the study has revealed the consonant feature of Arabic writing and its relation to derivation, inflection, and dialectal variation. Therefore, the researcher concludes that proposals of replacing Arabic alphabet by Latin alphabet or modification of Arabic orthography are non-linguistic which are related to contemporary issues like learning, the printing, translation and culture. These efforts should have examined Arabic writing as a representative …

Domination Of English And Its Impact On The Arabic System Of Scholarly Communication, Ali Saif Al-Aufi
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
While English, supported by technological development and the advent of networked information, has overwhelmingly played a dominating force in the world–wide system of scholarly communication, it has created a deficiency in local scholarly communication systems; the Arabic scholarly communication system is no exception. This paper investigates the impact of English language on the Arab academics’ practices in and attitudes towards research and scholarly communication. It also assesses the challenges facing the future of Arabic scholarship, in particular the crisis regarding the use of the Arabic language in the academic networked environment. A qualitative approach containing semi-structured interviews was utilized to …
