Female Student Veterans: A Survey Of Current Transition Challenges And Issues From Active Duty To Collegiate Life, Nicole Starr Biondoletti Jan 2017

Female Student Veterans: A Survey Of Current Transition Challenges And Issues From Active Duty To Collegiate Life, Nicole Starr Biondoletti

Theses and Dissertations

Research on the student veteran population is extremely limited. The literature does tell us, however, that mental health difficulties in veterans has been present for thousands of years, and that recent warfare has led to a steady increased in posttraumatic stress and suicidality. In addition, there has been an exponential increase in veterans enrolling in post-secondary institutions due to the appealing benefits of the post-9/11 GI Bill. The result of these two facts are a relatively new population with unique challenges and needs. The present study utilized the PTSD Checklist, Military version (PCL-M), the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R), the Combat …

The Effect Of Mode Of Child Delivery And Other Maternal Factors On Acquisition Of Some Oral Microflora In A Group Of Egyptian Infants, Nora Salman, Nadia Metwalli, Mariam Wassel

Dentistry

Background: Early childhood caries is etiologically associated with bacterial colonization. Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) have been related to dental cariesbased on well-defined cariogenicity. A body of evidence suggests that children acquire S. mutans primarily from their mothers. It was also suggested that mode of child delivery can lead to differences in the initial foundation of oral microbiota.

Purpose: To assess the acquisition of S.mutans and Streptococcus mitis (S. mitis) in a group of Egyptian infants in relation to mode of child delivery and maternal salivary bacterial counts and caries index scores.

Subjects and Methods:A total of 50 mothers and their infants …

Effect Of One Piece Versus Two Piece Mini Implants On Bone Height Of Implant Retained Mandibular Overdenture, Fardos N. Rizk, Jehan Fikry Prof., Amr Badr, Ahmed Damarisy Dr. Jan 2017

Effect Of One Piece Versus Two Piece Mini Implants On Bone Height Of Implant Retained Mandibular Overdenture, Fardos N. Rizk, Jehan Fikry Prof., Amr Badr, Ahmed Damarisy Dr.

Dentistry

Introduction: Severely atrophied mandibles are a common problem within elderly completely edentulous patients. Given their small diameters, long height and self-tapping characteristics, miniimplant retained over-dentures are a valuable treatment option in such patients. Mini-implants are usually once-piece implants, however recently two-piece mini-implants were introduced with aim of addressing the angulation problems. The success of the latter has not been thoroughly studied. Crestal bone height measurements are normally used to evaluate implant success. Therefore this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of one piece versus two piece ERA mini implants on crestal bone height of implant retained mandibular over-denture. Materials …

Association Of Porcine Cryptorchidism With Dna Parentage Test, Testicular Protein Expression And Testicular Proteomics, Nathamon Yimpring Jan 2017

Association Of Porcine Cryptorchidism With Dna Parentage Test, Testicular Protein Expression And Testicular Proteomics, Nathamon Yimpring

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cryptorchidism is one of the most common congenital abnormalities observed in boars. One of the important obstacles to produce good quality pork is cryptorchidism. Pigs with cryptorchidism cause defects in spermatogenesis, low conception rate and/or infertility. This odor can be the cause of economic loss because consumers reject to buy meat with boar taint and flavor. In fattening farm, multi-sire mating system is normally used. Molecular genetic techniques allow the possibility of testing on genetic and parentage control. This research aimed to study i. To optimize microsatellite markers and develop the DNA fingerprint technique used to identify the parentage of …

Ethical And Political Implications Of Reflective Practice Among Preservice Teachers, Jeffrey Labelle Jan 2017

Ethical And Political Implications Of Reflective Practice Among Preservice Teachers, Jeffrey Labelle

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigates the ethical and political implications of reflective practice among preservice teachers. The author reviewed previous research which suggests the need for a more critical analysis of teacher education programs to implement more intensive reflective methodologies that foster authentic, caring, dispositional development as a moral obligation toward socially just practice rather than mere audited compliance with standards-based technical training. This position paper then analyzes preservice teacher education as an interdependent process of methodological development, perceptive development, and cognitive/affective development. Finally, the author makes recommendations for program modification to better prepare preservice teachers to conceptualize their transformative role in …

Recasting The Founding Fathers: The Tea Party, Neoliberalism, And American Myth, Calvin Coker Jan 2017

Recasting The Founding Fathers: The Tea Party, Neoliberalism, And American Myth, Calvin Coker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article analyzes representative texts from the Tea Party Movement (TPM), a conservative American political movement, to demonstrate the TPM uses the myth of the Founding Fathers as an argumentative strategy to craft and justify a sanitary neoliberal political project. The necessity of such of a project lies in the underlying democratic crisis of neoliberalism, a crisis navigated by the TPM through strategic use of political myth. Neoliberal policies require, in many instances, democratic consent, though those policies often serve to disenfranchise many of the groups supporting them. This essay argues the TPM uses myth for the purpose of creating …

Murder, Miscarriage, And Women’S Choice: Prudence In The Colorado Personhood Debate, Calvin Coker Jan 2017

Murder, Miscarriage, And Women’S Choice: Prudence In The Colorado Personhood Debate, Calvin Coker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article analyzes texts circulated in the 2014 debate over Colorado’s Amendment 67, the so-called Personhood Amendment, to demonstrate that value claims within the abortion debate are subordinated in favor of discussing the potential legal and philosophical implications of granting fetuses personhood. Using prudence, Robert Hariman’s (1991) framework for understanding political action, as a theoretical lens, I argue the personhood debate offers scholars an opportunity to identify and evaluate competing value claims of and in relation to potential impacts of the amendment. Prudence offers a compelling area for political communication and rhetorical scholars to expand and develop in light of …

Using Technology To Determine Factorability Or Non-Factorability Of Quadratic Algebraic Trinomials, John E. T. Bernard, Olga Ramirez, Cristina Villalobos Jan 2017

Using Technology To Determine Factorability Or Non-Factorability Of Quadratic Algebraic Trinomials, John E. T. Bernard, Olga Ramirez, Cristina Villalobos

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper is aimed for mathematics educators who teach algebra, more specifically, the factoring of quadratic algebraic expressions, and who want to enhance student learning of this topic using technology in conjunction with the Middle Term Splitting Method (Donnell, 2010; MTSM 2016a; MTSM 2016b). We will use technology-based algebra and geometry connections to help determine factorability or nonfactorability of quadratic algebraic trinomials over the integers, over the real numbers, and over the complex numbers, both with clarity, certainty and with understanding by using two equations, one derived from the coefficients of the outer terms and the other from the middle …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The first observation of a binary neutron star (NS) coalescence by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave (GW) detectors offers an unprecedented opportunity to study matter under the most extreme conditions. After such a merger, a compact remnant is left over whose nature depends primarily on the masses of the inspiraling objects and on the equation of state of nuclear matter. This could be either a black hole (BH) or an NS, with the latter being either long-lived or too massive for stability implying delayed collapse to a BH. Here, we present a search for GWs from the remnant …

Identifying Possible Alternative Rodenticide Baits To Replace Strychnine Baits For Pocket Gophers In California, Gary W. Witmer, Roger A. Baldwin, Rachael S. Moulton Jan 2017

Identifying Possible Alternative Rodenticide Baits To Replace Strychnine Baits For Pocket Gophers In California, Gary W. Witmer, Roger A. Baldwin, Rachael S. Moulton

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Rodents cause substantial damage to crops in California and rodenticides have been major tools for reducing that damage. While strychnine has been heavily relied upon to control pocket gophers in California, its future availability is in question because of increased import costs. We conducted efficacy trials with captive, wild-caught Botta's pocket gophers to identify potential alternative rodenticides to strychnine. The rodenticide baits tested included three categories: acute rodenticides, first generation anticoagulant rodenticides, and combination rodenticides (containing an acute toxicant and an anticoagulant). There was a wide range of efficacies (0e100%) with these rodenticides. The first generation anticoagulants performed poorly, while …

Can Experience Reduce Collisions Between Birds And Vehicles?, T. L. Devault, T. W. Seamans, Bradley F. Blackwell, S. L. Lima, M. A. Martinez, E. Fernandez-Juricic

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird collisions with vehicles cause serious safety, financial and conservation concerns worldwide, but the causes of such collisions are poorly described. We investigated how experience with vehicles influenced avian avoidance responses. We trained three groups of vehicle-naiıve rock pigeons Columba livia with 32 near-miss vehicle approaches over 4 weeks at 60 and 120 km h-1, and also included individuals that heard but did not see the approaches (control group). We subsequently measured flight initiation distance (FID) and whether individuals ‘collided’ with a virtual vehicle directly approaching at 120 or 240 km h-1 using video playback. We found …

Management And Modeling Approaches For Controlling Raccoon Rabies: The Road To Elimination, Stacey A. Elmore, Richard B. Chipman, Dennis Slate, Kathryn P. Huyvaert, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Amy T. Gilbert

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Rabies is an ancient viral disease that significantly impacts human and animal health throughout the world. In the developing parts of the world, dog bites represent the highest risk of rabies infection to people, livestock, and other animals. However, in North America, where several rabies virus variants currently circulate in wildlife, human contact with the raccoon rabies variant leads to the highest per capita population administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) annually. Previous rabies variant elimination in raccoons (Canada), foxes (Europe), and dogs and coyotes (United States) demonstrates that elimination of the raccoon variant from the eastern US is feasible, given …

Uncovering Behavioural States From Animal Activity And Site Fidelity Patterns, Peter J. Mahoney, Julie K. Young Jan 2017

Uncovering Behavioural States From Animal Activity And Site Fidelity Patterns, Peter J. Mahoney, Julie K. Young

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

1. Space use by animals has important implications for individual fitness. However, resource requirements often vary throughout the course of a lifetime and are a reflection of the demands associated with daily tasks or specific life-history phases, from food acquisition to reproduction, and emphasize the need to classify resource selection relative to specific behavioural states. Site fidelity is often indicative of behaviours important for individual maintenance (e.g. foraging), species’ life history (e.g. seasonal site selection), social communication (e.g. scent-marking) and species interactions (e.g. predation, competition). Thus, resolving site fidelity patterns associated with key behaviours is essential to accurately quantify behavioural-dependent …

Picky Eaters Are Rare: Dna-Based Blood Meal Analysis Of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) Species From The United States, Matthew W. Hopken, Bonnie M. Ryan, Kathryn P. Huyvaert, Antoinette J. Piaggio

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Background: Biting midges in the genus Culicoides (Diptera; Ceratopogonidae) have been implicated in the transmission of a number of parasites and highly pathogenic viruses. In North America, the complete transmission cycles of many of these pathogens need further elucidation. One way to increase our knowledge about the evolution and ecology of Culicoides species and the pathogens they transmit is to document the diversity of vertebrate hosts that Culicoides feed upon. Our objective was to identify the diversity of Culicoides hosts in the United States.

Results: We sequenced two vertebrate mitochondrial genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and cytochrome b) from …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Airport properties often include agricultural land cover that can attract wildlife species hazardous to aircraft, despite recommendations against row crops near air operations areas. However, few studies have directly quantified bird use of corn, wheat, and soybean fields relative to bird-aircraft collision (strike) hazard levels to support land cover recommendations. Therefore, we compared bird use among corn, wheat and soybean fields and predicted that corn and wheat would attract bird species recognized as hazardous to aviation. We also anticipated that soybeans would pose minimal attraction to such birds. Here, hazard ranking (low to extremely high) reflects the percentage of strikes …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Alteration of gut microbial colonization process may influence susceptibility of the newborn/infant to infectious and chronic disease. Infectious disease risk leads to widespread use of non-prescription antimicrobials in household products such as Triclocarban (TCC), an antimicrobial compound in personal care products. TCC concentrates in and is transferred through the milk to suckling offspring. TCC exposure during gestation and lactation significantly reduced phylogenetic diversity (PD) among exposed dams and neonates. Among dams using weighted UniFrac distances, TCC induced significant dysbiosis of gut microbiota by gestational day (GD) 18, a trend that continued after delivery. Similarly, an overall restructuring of gut microbiota …

Diazacon Reduces Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Reproduction In Colorado, Christi A. Yoder, Richard E. Mauldin, James P. Gionfriddo, Kenneth A. Crane, David A. Goldade, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Context. Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomus ludovicianus) often come into conflict with humans in urban natural areas adjacent to private property by destroying plants and denuding the landscape. There is a diversity of attitudes related to urban prairie dog management in Colorado and interest in non-lethal methods is increasing. Therefore, the development of non-lethal methods that allow the existence of prairie dogs and mitigate damage related to population density is needed.

Aims. The efficacy of DiazaCon (20,25-diazacholesterol dihydrochloride, a cholesterol analogue) as an oral contraceptive bait for reducing reproduction in black-tailed prairie dogs was tested. Persistence of DiazaCon in …

The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 establishes liability for injuries to natural resources because of the release or threat of release of oil. Assessment of injury to natural resources resulting from an oil spill and development and implementation of a plan for the restoration, rehabilitation, replacement or acquisition of natural resources to compensate for those injuries is accomplished through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process. The NRDA process began within a week of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which occurred on April 20, 2010. During the spill, more than 8500 dead and impaired birds representing at least 93 avian …

Oral and external dosing methods replicating field exposure were developed using the double crested cormorant (DCCO) to test the toxicity of artificially weathered Deepwater Horizon Mississippi Canyon 252 oil. The majority of previous oil dosing studies conducted on wild-caught birds used gavage methods to dose birds with oil and determine toxicity. However, rapid gut transit time of gavaged oil likely reduces oil absorption. In the present studies, dosing relied on injection of oil into live feeder fish for oral dosing of these piscivorous birds, or applying oil to body contour feathers resulting in transdermal oil exposure and oral exposure through …

During the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment, gross morphologic cardiac abnormalities, including softer, more distensible musculature, were noted upon gross necropsy in hearts from laughing gulls and double-crested cormorants exposed to weathered MC252 crude oil. A species specific, echocardiographic technique was developed for antemortem evaluation of function that was used to evaluate and better characterize cardiac dysfunction. Control (n=12) and treated (n=13) cormorant groups of similar sex-ratio and ages were dermally treated with approximately 13 ml of water or weathered MC252 crude oil, respectively, every 3 days for 6 dosages. This resulted in a low to moderate external exposure. …

Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus, DCCO) were orally exposed to Deepwater Horizon Mississippi Canyon 252 (DWH) oil to investigate oil-induced toxicological impacts. Livers were collected for multiple analyses including cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) enzymatic activity and protein expression. CYP1A enzymatic activity was measured by alkoxyresorufin O-dealkylase (AROD) assays. Activities specific to the O-dealkylation of four resorufin ethers are reported: benzyloxyresorufin O-debenzylase (BROD), ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), methoxyresorufin O-demethylase (MROD), and pentoxyresorufin O-depentylase (PROD). CYP1A protein expression was measured by western blot analysis with a CYP1A1 mouse monoclonal antibody. In study 1, hepatic BROD, EROD, and PROD activities were significantly induced in …

Injury assessment of birds following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in 2010 was part of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment. One reported effect was hemolytic anemia with the presence of Heinz bodies (HB) in birds, however, the role of route and magnitude of exposure to oil is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to determine if double-crested cormorants (Phalacocorax auritis; DCCO) exposed orally and dermally to artificially weathered crude oil would develop hemolytic anemia including HB and reticulocytosis. In the oral experiment, sub-adult, mixed-sex DCCOs were fed control (n = 8) or oil–injected fish with …
