Identifying Performance Differences Between Two Pulse Oximetry Systems In Simulated Critical Neonatal Conditions, Brian King, Jake Dove, Scott J Mcgonigle, Warwick A Ames, Zachary A Vesoulis
2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVE: Pulse oximetry is used to guide critical clinical decisions in neonatology. We used a vital signs simulator to compare performance of two pulse oximetry systems in conditions not tested in standardized clinical verification studies.
STUDY DESIGN: We devised a set of simulated tissue translucency, perfusion, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO
RESULTS: The mean SpO
CONCLUSION: Significant performance differences can be observed when comparing pulse oximeters at low translucency and perfusion conditions. Patient simulators cannot replace clinical testing but provide a safe and cost-effective method for additional performance profiling.

Myxomycetes are a widespread group of organisms but, given their inconspicuousness and the specialist knowledge needed to culture and identify them, there are many regions of the world where they have never been studied. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian Territory in the Indian Ocean, are one such location. We collected substrates from islands in the Cocos archipelago and cultured 37 morphospecies of myxomycete representing 15 genera. Five substrate types were sampled; the greatest species richness was associated with aerial litter, aerial twigs, and ground litter. Eight habitat types were sampled, of which coconut forest had the greatest species richness. …

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias disproportionately affect minority racial and ethnic communities. Community health workers are essential in addressing these disparities. We evaluated the impact of an educational workshop focusing on improving knowledge and preparedness in dementia care. Sixty-one CHWs attended in-person sessions in Texas and completed surveys to measure confidence and plans to apply the knowledge gained. Results revealed a significant increase in confidence in providing dementia care post-training (p < 0.001). Qualitative analysis identified five primary roles of CHWs. These findings demonstrate the potential of training interventions to improve knowledge gaps and empower CHWs to address dementia in underserved communities.

Proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) have the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment by specifically targeting and degrading oncogenic proteins. Using the ubiquitin-proteasome system, PROTACs allow the selective degradation of disease-causing proteins, including those traditionally deemed “undruggable” by conventional small-molecule inhibitors. By catalytically eliminating rather than inhibiting proteins, PROTACs provide sustained target suppression with lower doses and reduced toxicity. Their bifunctional design linking a protein of interest to an E3 ligase drives targeted ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation. Recent progress demonstrates promise in treating solid and hematologic malignancies, with several candidates advancing to clinical trials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of developing …

This article demonstrates how the 1871 probate file of Sally (Andrews) (Andrews) (Clark) Walton of Paris, Maine, resolves decades of genealogical confusion among Andrews families of western Maine. Analysis of her will, codicils, and probate accountings reconstructs a fragmented sibling group and definitively distinguishes two men named Perez Andrews whose identities had long been conflated. The evidence firmly links Darius Andrews of Sumner, Perez Andrews of Buckfield and Penobscot County, and several previously untraced Andrews siblings to a single parental family headed by Ebenezer Andrews Jr. and Sarah (Elliot) Andrews. Moving beyond questions of descent, the article shows how probate …

The Supreme Court decided five primary labor and employment law cases in 2024—two discrimination cases, two arbitration cases, and one labor law case. This article also discusses a sixth case, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, because it will undoubtedly affect labor and employment law despite the facts and underlying issue having nothing to do with the workplace.
I was initially underwhelmed with this year’s cases. None of them addresses any major substantive labor and employment law issue. However, upon further consideration, the cases are noteworthy for three reasons. First, three of them are pro-plaintiff with outcomes that benefit workers— …

Swarm robotics leverages groups of autonomous robots to perform complex tasks collaboratively. Recently, there has been growing interest in the Self-Supervised Learning framework (SSL) for social robots, yet very little research has been done on designing a SSL framework for foraging swarm robots systems. In this paper, to address the two challenges above, we proposed a novel efficient self-supervised learning framework. Specifically, we proposed 1) a shared weight multi-instance based encoder-decoder structure for model pre-training; and 2) an embedding series compression strategy to reduce the space cost in inference stage. Experiments show our system can match the performance of standard …

There is growing clinical interest in strategies for improving clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF) and obesity. The development of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and of the dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 RA has expanded therapeutic options for this population. This expert consensus provides a comprehensive and pragmatic framework for the use of GLP-1 RAs and GIP/GLP-1 RA in patients with HF, focusing on clinical integration, patient selection, safety, and tolerability. We review the evidence supporting their use in patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), where clinical trials have demonstrated meaningful reductions in body …

Several urinary markers reflect disease severity and have the potential to support the management of heart failure (HF). Collecting urine samples is easy and inexpensive, and urine sample composition can be altered not only by underlying kidney impairments (i.e. filtration barrier damage and tubular injury) but also via neurohormonal and inflammatory activation, ageing, comorbidities, other medical conditions and pharmacological interventions. For instance, urinary sodium may help to predict the response to loop diuretic therapy in acute HF, while albuminuria is used as a risk marker and therapeutic target for the progression of cardiovascular and kidney diseases in chronic HF, especially …

Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Cryptococcus neoformans are the invasive fungi whose diseases are becoming a growing health issue in the global community, particularly in immunocompromised people. The increasing resistance of the conventional antifungals and the shortage of the existing treatment methods require alternative methods. The present review is an evaluation of the antifungal activity of metal-based nanoparticles, including silver (Ag), copper (Cu), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and selenium (Se) in relation to the three predominant pathogenic fungi. It also talks about their mode of action, relative efficacy, toxicity and their possible future clinical …

Composing A Kaleidoscope: A Scholarly Personal Narrative Of Academia In A Time Of Digital Overload, Suzanne Porath
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
s Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) explores the experience of fractured academic identity amid illness, remote teaching, and digital saturation. Anchored in the methodology of SPN as described by Nash (2004) this narrative integrates personal storytelling with critical reflection and theoretical engagement. Drawing on Rushkoff’s concept of digiphrenia, Makowka’s fractal identity, and Gergen’s absent presence, the paper examines how academic life in the digital age increasingly demands simultaneous performances of self across disjointed timelines and virtual spaces. Through vignettes of presenting at concurrent conferences, teaching from chemotherapy bays, and supporting a dissertation defense in unlikely places, this piece reflects on the …

Self-healing concrete presents a promising solution to counter the degradation of concrete structures caused by cracks and damage. This innovative mechanism employs the concrete's capacity to autonomously repair its cracks, effectively extending the lifespan of structures and reducing maintenance costs. Particularly in regions facing water scarcity, such as the Middle East and North African countries, the utilization of wastewater holds significant importance. This study investigates the self healing abilities of wastewater bacteria infused into lightweight pumice aggregates within concrete. Wastewater contains diverse bacteria, microorganisms, and oxygen—essential components for the self-healing process. Wastewater sourced from the North Gaza Emergency Sewage Treatment …

The Paradox Of The Broker: Why Educators Of Color Must Be Supported, Not Just Celebrated, Tatiana C. Parker
Gatherings
In this article, Dr. Tatiana C. Parker examines the transformative potential of social capital brokering within the higher education system, particularly for communities that have been systematically excluded through opportunity hoarding and network closures both historically and presently. Institutions of learning have long served as sites for the transmission of instrumental (tangible) and expressive (emotional) social capital returns. Yet, the same system that has supported mobility is now under attack through the divestment of education, ideological resistance, and the longstanding disenfranchisement of educators of color.
Drawing on her research regarding Black women and upward mobility, she asserts that when educators, …

With examples from influential women of color feminists, the essay points to some obstacles in the way to developing a true practice of recovery for women of color academics whose research brings them in continual contact with histories and enactments of harm against women and people of color. As women of color in higher education, articulating our health and healing needs in our own terms would help us clear a path to promoting ourselves as whole and healthy persons, in addition to promoting us along a career path. The essay collects reflections on health struggles from famous women of color …

This introduction serves as a means to share with you, the reader, about an upstate New York symposium that occurred in March of 2025. The event aimed to create a space where we could explore the trials, tribulations, and jubilations that women of color in New York higher education experience. Speakers and attendees gathered from all over the state—and, indeed, country—on a cold wintery day in a spirit of togetherness and awareness of where we find ourselves in this moment. We were there to learn and grow, and to find community.
