© 2017 APA, all rights reserved). Cues that signal rewards can motivate reward-seeking behaviors, even for outcomes that are not currently desired. Three experiments examined this phenomenon, using an outcome-selective Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT) design and an outcome devaluation procedure. In Experiment 1, participants learned to perform one response to earn crisps points and another response to earn popcorn points. One outcome was then devalued by adulterating it to make it taste unpleasant. On test, overall response choice was biased toward the outcome that had not been devalued, indicating goal-directed control. Stimuli that signaled crisps and popcorn also biased instrumental response …

“Damp In Bathroom. Damp In Back Room. It's Very Depressing!” Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Housing Problems, Energy Affordability Concerns, And Health And Well-Being In Uk Social Housing, Gt Boomsma, S Pahl, Rv Jones, A Fuertes

School of Psychology

Social housing residents often struggle with achieving adequate levels of warmth in their home on a limited household budget. Additionally, other housing problems such as damp are common. Previous research has found a link between housing problems and poor health and reduced well-being, but this relationship is complex and poorly understood. A survey among UK social housing residents (N=536) investigated the association between cold and damp housing, as well as the role of energy affordability concerns in the relationship between housing problems and health. The findings indicated that struggles with keeping warm related to a cluster of damp and mould …

The Relationship Between Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Moss And Tree Cover In Portland Or, Andrew S. Mautz

University Honors Theses

This study is a spatial analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) across the Portland Metro area using data collected from samples of moss tissue (Orthotrichum spp.), and an exploration of the relationship between PAH deposition and urban tree canopy in Portland Oregon. PAH are a class of common environmental pollutants created by the incomplete combustion of organic materials; largely via anthropocentric activity. Species of lichens and mosses have been shown to be suitable bioindicators of air pollutants (including PAH contamination) in other studies. Urban tree canopy is known to mitigate other environmental pollutants, as well as provide numerous …

A Critical View Of Helminthic Therapy: Is It A Viable Form Of Treatment For Immune Disorders Under The Category Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease?, Alyssa Murphy

University Honors Theses

In the developed world, Crohn’s disease and colitis affects the lives of many individuals. Recently, a new form of treatment for these autoimmune diseases has gained recognition. This treatment uses helminths (Trichuris trichiura and Trichuris suis) as an immunomodulant to a human immune system. Various studies (Summers et. al., 2004; Dige et. al., 2016; Lopes et. al., 2016) have shown the safety and viability of this form of treatment, but many believe this area of research leaves much to be desired. Through this paper, the topic of helminthic therapy and its viability as a form of treatment for …

Proteoglycan Neofunctions: Regulation Of Inflammation And Autophagy In Cancer Biology., Liliana Schaefer, Claudia Tredup, Maria A. Gubbiotti, Renato V. Iozzo Jan 2017

Proteoglycan Neofunctions: Regulation Of Inflammation And Autophagy In Cancer Biology., Liliana Schaefer, Claudia Tredup, Maria A. Gubbiotti, Renato V. Iozzo

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Inflammation and autophagy have emerged as prominent issues in the context of proteoglycan signaling. In particular, two small, leucine-rich proteoglycans, biglycan and decorin, play pivotal roles in the regulation of these vital cellular pathways and, as such, are intrinsically involved in cancer initiation and progression. In this minireview, we will address novel functions of biglycan and decorin in inflammation and autophagy, and analyze new emerging signaling events triggered by these proteoglycans, which directly or indirectly modulate these processes. We will critically discuss the dual role of proteoglycan-driven inflammation and autophagy in tumor biology, and delineate the potential mechanisms through which …

Fish Oil With Higher Dha Content And Voluntary Exercise Decreases Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Jameela Banu, Gabriel Fernandes Jan 2017

Fish Oil With Higher Dha Content And Voluntary Exercise Decreases Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Jameela Banu, Gabriel Fernandes

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

There is increasing evidence suggesting that fish oil (FO) decreases bone resorption by reducing osteoclastogenesis and regular exercise (EX) increases bone mass. EX is associated with increasing bone formation. Therefore, the combined effects of FO intake and EX may have additive effects by both increasing bone formation and decreasing bone resorption. To demonstrate this, we studied the effects of FO and EX on the bone of mice after an ovariectomyinduced bone loss.

Twelve months old C57BL/6 female mice were either sham operated or ovariectomized, divided into different dietary and EX group and maintained for 3 months before sacrifice.

The distal …

Assessing The Cellular And Adhesive Interactions In In Vitro Models Of Mantle Cell Lymphoma, David Tucker Jan 2017

Assessing The Cellular And Adhesive Interactions In In Vitro Models Of Mantle Cell Lymphoma, David Tucker

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) that has very poor survival. Like other LPDs, the neoplastic cells of MCL have an intimate dependence upon accessory cells within haematopoietic tissues. Understanding and exploiting the tissue-relationships of the mantle cells may therefore lead to further new approaches to treatment. This study work has set out to construct an in vitro system to model relevant aspects of the tissue-dependent behaviour of the neoplastic mantle cells, seeking to establish the link between in vitro behaviour and clinical phenotype, and establishing the feasibility of this system to study the effects of …

These cells were injected into the vitreous humour of the eye within 2 hours following bright light exposure. Retinal function was assessed using full-field, flash electroretinogram (ERG) before and after treatment. The numbers of …

Dementia: Incorporating Families And Caregivers In Direct Speech-Language Intervention, Jocelyn Hartley Jan 2017

Dementia: Incorporating Families And Caregivers In Direct Speech-Language Intervention, Jocelyn Hartley

Online Theses and Dissertations

In a survey, 50% of 1,000 caregivers reported that they received no information on dementia at the time of diagnosis (Thompson & Pulsford, 2012). This statistic provides strong evidence as to why caregivers feel ill-prepared to care for individuals with dementia. The role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is suggested to not only treat the individual with dementia, but consider the role and perspective of the caregiver (Watson, Aizawa, Savundranayagam & Orange, 2013). Providing education and training to caregivers of individuals with dementia is within the scope of practice of speech-language pathologists (Watson et al., 2013).

A survey design for …
